"In mineral processing, the recovery and/or concentration of the value components cannot occur in one operational stage, therefore requiring the use of separation circuits based on several flotation stages. The components to be separated are typically distributed at different concentrations and different particle sizes, resulting in different levels of recovery. Typically, more than one value component must be selectively removed by exploiting the differences in the components’ floatability at different pH values, pulp potential and particle size. Several methods for the design of these circuits are available in the literature, but comparatively few studies present circuit analysis tools or address the design of a multiple-product flotation circuit. In this study, global sensitivity analysis was used to analyze a flotation circuit with several products, such as copper, lead and zinc. This analysis was based on the Eureka mine concentrator plant. The analysis was performed for each of the sections of the circuit as an overall evaluation of the circuit. The Sobol’ method and the correlation method were used to evaluate the Eureka mine concentrator plant using the SimLab 2.2 software."

THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. To avoid too great prolixity, I adopted at the outset the following general principles: 1. When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining., quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and. the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted.

In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.

A goal programming-based worker scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal. The objective is minimization of the deviations away from the goals. A number of coefficients are used as premultipliers of the decision variables in order to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. Some of these premultipliers will be updated expertly within MMSS, timely updating the statuses of the dynamic parameters.

The battle of the gold standard is not limited to one country alone, or even to a single group of countries. It is being waged merrily in many important commercial and industrial quarters. Though it is not always a practical issue calling for immediate attention, it is none the less, quite widely, engaging the thought of bankers and other students of finance. The controversy arises, in the last analysis, because of the desire of men to secure a stable currency. There are two ways of restoring a reasonably stable currency system: (1) the re-establishment of the gold standard, or (2) the deliberate and artificial management of a paper currency. Both systems are well known. The gold standard was in use prior to the war in the principal commercial countries. A currency of inconvertible paper has been at times employed in the past in various countries; for example in Britain from 1797 to 1821, and in the United States from 1862 to 1879. The gold standard, as all are aware, implies the selection of gold as the standard of value. The unit of value is a fixed weight of gold and, so long as the standard remains unimpaired, all other means of payment are maintained at a parity with standard gold coins. And gold coins alone constitute the standard money, inasmuch as their value as bullion equals their value as coins. Under the gold standard this would not be true of any other form of money, although all other varieties of money, including bank notes, government notes and silver coins would be freely convertible into gold money. Strictly speaking, the gold standard also implies that the gold money in turn shall itself be freely convertible, through melting, into gold bullion and freely exportable.

When two pieces of heavy equipment interact, jolting and jarring can occur. During haulage truck loading for example, there is a chance that the operator of one or both pieces of the equipment will experience jolting and jarring. Additionally, a jolt can occur when an off highway equipment operator drives over a road defect or inadvertently strikes a berm. Aside from the operators, there is seldom anyone else that witnesses the interaction and can accurately describe the extent of the jolting. This makes it difficult for health and safety managers to address jolting and jarring. The devices and software described in this paper constitute a method for installing “black boxes” called Shox Boxes onboard equipment that already have a GPS system onboard. The resulting configuration provides an objective assessment of jolting and a chance to determine the root causes of it. The Shox Box system reviews data in real time, onboard the vehicles, 24 hrs a day, and sends pertinent information via radio to a central database. The data generated shows whether jolts are above or below a supervisor defined target value for the equipment and the tasks being performed. This allows health and safety personnel to demonstrate safe operation of heavy equipment and recommend proactive actions to maintain jolting within a reasonable range.

MINE fires are usually extinguished by constructing seals in the approaches to the areas to exclude air from the fire areas, which smothers the fires in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere. Seals should be substantially constructed and made as nearly airtight as possible and should be provided with a sampling pipe so that samples of the atmospheres behind the seals may be collected at regular intervals. Methods of constructing seals and of sampling and analysing mine atmospheres are fully described in Bureau of Mines publications. (1, 2). Information obtained on the composition of atmospheres behind fire seals is helpful in determining if a fire has been extinguished or if there is any danger of an explosion when a fire area is being sealed or unsealed. The progress of a mine fire can best be determined by studying percentages of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen in the atmosphere behind the seals. Hydrogen will be formed in a bituminous- or subbituminous-coal mine when the temperature exceeds 480° F. and in an anthracite mine when the temperature exceeds 660° F. (3). Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are both products of combustion of coal, wood, or other organic compounds. The presence of carbon monoxide has long been accepted as an indication of a mine fire. A sealed fire area should not be reopened until the carbon monoxide has disappeared. Trends in the percentage of carbon dioxide are also useful in determining the status of a mine fire. Carbon dioxide is sometimes liberated by rock strata. In this case, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere behind a seal will be from two sources-the rock strata and the fire. When the, fire is extinguished, carbon dioxide will be liberated from only I source, the rock strata, and when the percentages of carbon dioxide are plotted, the slope of the curve will not be as steep as when this gas was being liberated from 2 sources. If the only source is the fire, the percentages of carbon dioxide will gradually decrease after the fire has been extinguished. By studying analyses of a mine-fire atmosphere, it is possible to determine if the atmosphere is explosive; if the mixture is capable of becoming explosive when mixed with air; and if the mixture can be made nonexplosive or be prevented from becoming explosive by being mixed with an inert gas. These factors can be computed mathematically or determined graphically. The mathematical calculations advanced by Ash and Felegy (7) are discussed, and graphical solutions of their equations are presented. It is believed that the graphical solution will be extremely helpful in determining the characteristics of a mine-fire atmosphere when fighting a fire, because the results can be obtained in a matter of minutes, and there is less likelihood of an error being made under the stress incident to control efforts. The experimental and theoretical work upon which the formulas are based have been adequately described and are not discussed at this time (5) (6).

THE formula very frequently used for computing the economical size of pipe to transmit compressed air is that of D'Arcy, as follows: d5(p1-p2)/w1l D-c w11 Where, D = the volume of compressed air delivered in cubic feet per minute,-at the final pressure. c = an experimental coefficient determined for the various sizes of pipe. d = the diameter of the pipe in inches. 1 = the length of the pipe in feet. P1 = the initial gauge-pressure in pounds per square inch. p2= the final gauge-pressure in pounds per square inch. W1 = the density of the air, or the weight in pounds per cubic foot at the initial pressure, p,. The most common case is that in which the given quantities are: the quantity of air required, the length of the pipe, and the initial pressure. The method of solution is to assume a pressure-loss and to compute the remaining factor, c/d5, thus giving the size of pipe corresponding to the assumed loss of pressure. It is always desirable to try two or more pressure-drops, in order to find the combination that is most satisfactory, since often a small change in the size of pipe will reduce or increase the loss of pressure several pounds. An alternative method is to assume a size of pipe and calculate the corresponding pressure-drop. Each method involves a series of tedious calculations to arrive at the most economical solution, and also requires the use of tables giving the constant, c, the actual diameters corresponding to the nominal pipe-sizes, the density of the air, w1, and often, for convenience, a table giving the

IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps.

A modified falling ball technique for measuring the viscosity of liquids is described. It consists of recording the weight vs. time of a crucible holding the liquid of unknown viscosity, as a solid ball, or liquid drop, is let to fall through the liquid. This method does not require measurements at constant terminal velocity, as the conventional falling ball technique. Also, measurements do not depend on visual observation, which is not possible in opaque liquids or containers. The effect of process parameters on the utility of this method and its potential application to liquid systems of metallurgical interest were analyzed theoretically. The paper also com- pares the gravimetric method to the conventional falling ball technique for measuring viscosity.
