Most modern mines can profit from improvements in information handling. Recording systems in many cases were designed to satisfy certain necessary legal requirements, but not specifically to provide management information. As a consequence, the top managements of these properties work with cost data and production information that is dated, lacking in detail and clouded with supposition. It is the intent of this paper to describe an information system for a mine-plant complex in terms of the type of data, application areas and the existing equipment technology that may be applied to improve this situation. The economics of information processing and data handling will not be discussed in detail. This paper is based on the premise that information is something of value and that information processing like a manufacturing operation works for and is subject to management control. Information, the product, must be of quality, and the cost must be favorable in terms of its use.

A non-transferred arc thermal plasma assisted cyclone reactor has been designed, built and operated to evaluate its use in vitrification of wastes. Simulated waste (liquid, slurry or fine particulate) is injected near the plasma flame, where nearly instantaneous dehydration and calcination reactions happen. A non-transferred arc plasma torch was attached tangentially to the cyclone and is utilized as both an enthalpy source and to provide the gas velocities required to generate the cyclonic gas flow patterns. The closed top cyclone flow sends the solid particulates to the wall, where they are captured by a thin film of molten glass that is injected as a powder at a position lower in the reactor. The molten glass is then collected in a crucible. The feasibility of simulant injection directly into the flame zone and its effect on electrode lifetimes has been studied. Several candidate refractory systems have been evaluated for their suitability for extended use under the demanding conditions present in the cyclone reactor.

"INTRODUCTIONTetronics Research and Development Co. Limited has installed several plasma torches for steel heating in continuous caster tundishes. An extensive demonstration program on a 14 tonne tundish reported the following advantages of plasma heating.• close control of steel temperature to ± 5°C;• a reduction of the furnace tapping temperature of up to 20ºC, leading to savings in energy and refractories costs ;• improvement in steel quality, to produce a slab product with an equi-axed crystal structure and a reduced number of large sub-surface slag inclusions;• the virtual elimination of oxygen pickup in the tundish; and• the capability of making ferroalloy trim additions to the tundish to permit a change of steel grade during casting, greatly decreasing inventory costs.The Need for Tundish HeatingIn the continuous casting of steel, the function of the tundish is to transfer the molten metal between the ladle to one or more continuously fed casting moulds. Figure I shows a typical temperature profile of molten steel in the tundish over the first cast cycle. It is observed that a rapid drop in temperature occurs both at the start of the cast, due to the tundish refractories absorbing heat, and also during ladle changeover. In addition, as a result of thermal losses through the ladle sidewalls, there is a gradual decline in the bulk steel temperature over the entire heat cycle. Consequently, in normal tundish operation, it is necessary to cast with a high superheat (25°C to 30°C + above steel liquidus temperature) in order to prevent freeze-up of the strand. Problems of high temperature variation and the potential of the steel solidifying in the tundish are greater for small caster units of low thermal mass . A high steel superheat increases the steelmaking vessel process time and refractory wear and prevents the formation of a uniform equi-axed solidification structure in the cast steel, resulting in centre line segregation and porosity. The large drop in the casting temperature that occurs during unsteady state operation causes an increase in the number of sub-surface inclusions, reducing the value of the product. Accordingly, plasma heating may be employed to maintain the molten steel at an optimum temperature to produce a slab of consistent quality."

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. An example is given where this database is used for managing atmospheric data collected at an underground coalmine operation in the US. THE patent system, through which an inventor is given exclusive right to his invention for a limited period as a reward for his industry and in reimbursement of his expenditures, originated in England in the famous "Statute of Monopolies," enacted in 1623. The first patent granted in America was to Samuel Winslow, in Massachusetts, in 1641. The basis of the patent system of the United States is a provision in the Constitution giving Congress the power to secure to inventors for a limited time the exclusive use of their discoveries. The first legislative enactment was the law of 1790, which was placed on the statute book after Washington had addressed Congress in its favor. Under this law, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General constituted the board for the examination of patent applications and the granting of patents. The first Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, became the first administrator of the patent sys- tem in this country. He personally examined every application filed during his term of office.

IF we follow the threads of the mining problems, upon which I have touched, we find them all leading to one great fundamental desideratum. The people of this State, of this Nation, and of this world must be brought to a better understanding of the basic nature of our industry-must be made more mineral-minded. It is my belief 'that there is not a man present among this earnest gathering of those interested in the mining industry, who has not a deep-seated and heartfelt desire that the existing unprecedented welfare and prosperity of the whole mass of American people be maintained not merely through our own generation but through the generations of our children and their children. In the decades to come there can be no question of the keenness of the foreign competition which we are doomed to meet, and in this great international contest that Nation which has the best balanced program of development and that broadness of vision in its governmental direction, which recognizes the necessity of a sympathetic attitude toward the upbuilding of such a broad pro- gram will be the Nation which will maintain and pre- serve that welfare of all of its people.

In North America, pipelines move more material than any other form of transportation. 1 Pipelines have been used principally for the transportation of liquids and gases; however, slurry pipelines have made notable gains in recent years enabling solid materials to be moved efficiently by pipelines. The obvious advantages of pipe-lines --low maintenance, low operating costs, minimal impact on the environment, greater land use, low labor intensity, safety and high operating factor --have stimulated researchers in England, West Germany, Japan, USSR and the USA during the past ten years to develop pneumatic capsule pipelines for the movement of bulk materials in large quantities. As a result of this work, pneumatic capsule pipelines are now available for the movement of dense bulk materials. Through these pneumatic capsule pipelines, material is moved in wheeled capsules which are pushed through the pipeline by flowing air. In this paper, a capsule pipeline system developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and Tubexpress Systems, Inc. of Houston, Texas is discussed. The Tubexpress System Major Components The pipe used for a Tubexpress capsule system is standard thin wall welded steel pipe. Since pressures in the system generally do not exceed one atmosphere, the controlling design criteria for wall thickness of the pipeline is pressure from the overburden of the backfill if the line is buried or the structural requirements for supporting itself and the load if it is suspended or supported on piers. I Introduction Coal fuels China. Roughly 70 percent of all commercial energy demand is supplied by domestic coal production and with the recent Chinese opening to the West, the Chinese Coal Industry may figure prominently in the export market as well. Because of the importance of China's coal industry to the future of China and the Pacific Rim energy balance, this paper reviews the industry and offers some cautious projections for its outlook. II Energy's Position in the Current Political and Economic Climate Traditionally, Chinese society has been dominated by the policies of its most important government leaders. Deng Xiaoping, Vice Chairman of the Communist Party is the current leader of China. Deng and his proteges are pragmatists. Although China's government structure is based on Marxist/Leninist tradition, Deng and his followers are promoting experiments with market economics and expanded relationships with Western Countries, which have encouraged foreign investment in China. Energy companies represent just one type of industry that is interested in helping the Chinese to develop their abundant natural resources. Although China's leadership is committed to a program of economic modernization, that program currently is experiencing what the Chinese government terms "readjustment". Readjustment cuts back in imports due to deficient foreign exchange and deemphasizes heavy industry, while it encourages agricultural and consumer goods output and, most imporant, energy production. Increased Chinese coal and oil production is essential both to fuel industry and, equally important, to provide foreign exchange. If sufficient energy production is not forthcoming, then economic growth will be severely retarded. China's 1979 per capita GNP of $260 is only slightly better than the weighted average achieved by low income countries of $230. (1) Delays in growth could lead to social unrest, threatening the position of the current leadership. Since there is no institutionalized mechanism for leadership succession and policy continuation, it is reasonable to assume that leadership changes could result in energy policy changes. III Energy Consumption Energy production is important to China's future economic health as highlighted by the World Bank. If China's economy grows rapidly, 5 percent to 6 percent during this decade, the Bank noted, a significant energy shortfall could occur as early as 1985. This state of affairs contrasts sharply with China's current position as a net hydrocarbon exporter. (2) To assure a healthy economic future, China's leadership is attempting to reduce its rate of increase in energy demand through conservation as well as to boost energy output. A massive conservation promotion program has been underway since 1979 and there is much room for improvement. China's industrial sector is only about half as energy efficient as is U.S. industry. (3) During the last two decades, each percent of increase in GNP has been accompanied by a 1.8 percent of increase in energy consumption. (4) This compares rather poorly with the United States where a less than one-to-one relationship exists. IV Energy Supply The short term prospects for oil production are uncertain. Production increases were rapid in the 1960's and early 1970's, averaging 20 percent annually, but most of this increase came from one field, Daquing. Now that Daquing's production has peaked and the offshore potential has yet to be developed, petroleum production has maintained a plateau of 2.1 million b/d, at least temporarily, of which approximately 15 percent is exported. East Nelson and Marlborough, in the northeast of the South Island, contain a wide variety of metallic minerals, including gold, silver, copper, chromite, antimony and scheelite, but no sustained metallic mining industry has evolved. Gold was the most sought-after mineral during the first century of European settlement and numerous discoveries were made but these failed to live up to expectations. While traces of gold are widespread in east Nelson, including in quartz veins in Nelson City, no payable deposits were found. In Marlborough the probability of a gold discovery had initially seemed remote but all this changed with the finding of rich deposits in the bed of the Wakamarina River in 1864, which provided a much-needed boost to the provincial economy. However, the decline of gold mining in Marlborough began virtually as soon as it had commenced. Extensive floods in 1865 hastened the exodus of miners to the profitable new fields of the West Coast.

A method, based on the macroscopic population balance equation allowing the dynamic simulation of a multistage adsorption plant given an arbitrary rate expression, is described. The partial differential equations resulting from this method are simplified using the method of characteristics. The simplified equations can then be solved using standard ODE integration techniques. The procedure is illustrated by means of data typical of a CIP application. Requirements for data structures which allow the incorporation of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) model (and other unit models) into a general metallurgical simulator are described. Based on these considerations, it is concluded that more generality in the description of distributed quantities such as loading and particle size is provided by the use of mass density at fixed class boundaries, rather than discrete masses within fixed classes as has hitherto been used by ore-dressing simulators.

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) FOR years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually, many miles from an assay-office. If, upon examination, the formation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had " optioned" the property ! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. To carry the usual complete assay-paraphernalia over such mountain-trails was impracticable by reason of the loss of time involved, the great expense of transportation (charged according to weight), and the fact that a few such trips would almost certainly wreck the outfit. For these reasons I began a process of elimination and substitution which finally enabled me to carry, in an ordinary 26-in. valise, sufficient apparatus and supplies for, say, 100 assays of adequate commercial accuracy. Current machine learning models used for roof fall hazard prediction are mounted on expensive sensors, computationally expensive, or lack the robustness for accurate prediction in the underground mining environment. This research aims to provide a design methodology for a robust, low-cost, deep learning-based algorithm for underground mine roof fall hazard prediction. A data sampling plan is developed to ensure the replicability and robustness of the developed model. In addition, feature engineering and transformation methods are described to identify relevant features for hazard identification. The methodology described here will be used in model development, tested, and implemented as a real-time mobile device application. The new tool will be expected to detect roof fall hazards in real-time and contribute to a crowdsourcing approach for underground hazard detection.

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

Bus drivers represent a large segment of the US transportation industry and research has shown an association between exposure to Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and the high rates of low back disorders. Impulsive WBV exposures have been recognized as a risk factor for low back injury and new guidelines exist for their measurement and assessment (ISO 2631, Part 5). Methods to accurately and better characterize the impulsiveness of WBV along with the temporal patterns of the exposures are needed. The development of a hardware and software system to measure continuous TWA and raw, impulsive WBV exposures and the design of a subsequent study are presented. Methods Using two Larson Davis HVM 100 as accelerometer amplifiers, small external batteries, and a Pocket-PC (PDA) with 1 Gb of compact flash memory, we can collect up to 16 channels of data for a full day 600 Hz. Tri-axial WBV exposures will be measured and characterized at the frame of the bus and at the driver/seat interface (seatpad accelerometer). Using a repeated measures design, 20 bus drivers will drive on selected routes which include both city streets and highways, and within and between subject components of variability and exposure determinants related to the bus, bus seat, the bus driver, and the route will be identified. Global Positioning System (GPS) data will also be collected and integrated with the WBV exposure data to facilitate the identification of the location, velocity and type of road associated with high average TWA and impulsive WBV exposures. This system may be used to develop administrative (alter speed and/or route of bus, systematically vary type of routes) and/or engineering controls (identify and trigger the need for street repair) to reduce high WBV exposures. Results Our portable Pocket-PC based data acquisition system is up and running and we can collect seven channels of WBV data (seat pan tri-axial accelerometer, bus frame tri-axial accelerometer and GPS data) continuously for a full shift. The software analysis of the data is complex but nearing completion. We have incorporated the vibration dose calculations from ISO 5321, Part 5 and have obtained a Matlab-based routine to appropriately weight the continuous signals. Discussion In summary, the measurement of WBV is complex but new technologies open avenues of collecting and assessing WBV exposures that were previously not possible. The standardization of impulsive WBV exposure assessment methods is needed to further the discipline and better enable comparisons across studies.

A significant risk factor in assessing and modeling potential catastrophic slope movement in open-pit mines is the presence of argillic alteration in host rocks. High-resolution hyperspectral imagery operating in the visible to shortwave infrared can be a useful tool for identifying and mapping potentially dangerous argillic zones. We have conducted preliminary experiments with a new type of hyperspectral imager that employs an acousto-optic tunable filter, a variable retardation plate and a standard digital camera. The instrument we tested operates in the .5-1.0 micrometer range. A shortwave infrared instrument is planned, and mid-infrared instruments have been designed. An AOTF consists of an acoustic transducer that generates an acoustic wave that propagates through an attached crystalline substance. The wave sinusoidally modulates the refractive index of the crystal, selectively diffracting incident light according to its wavelength. The instrument also measures polarization signatures of reflecting surfaces as well as their spectral properties, opening up new areas of possible research. Images can be acquired and processed at 30 frames/second. The AOTF camera system offers numerous advantages to geologists. It can be used as an airborne imager or as a portable field device to image pit walls, outcrops, rock specimens or drill core. It can be adapted to image polished sections under a microscope, and it could be used in underground workings. Algorithms can produce processed images in real time (e.g., ratio images), and, because it is a camera system, aerial images can be orthorectified.

Collecting the clay fraction of active stream sediment from a flowing stream for geochemical analysis i a difficult process. One either takes a sample of dry fine-grained sediment from the stream bank (dry weather and dry sample are uncommon in parts of New Zealand and Tasmania), or dredges up a sample of sand and mud out of the stream.The latter method produces a soggy ample bag full of mud and sand, with varying amounts of gravel, depending on the size of the stream. The water can be filtered from such a sample by means of a Buchner filter funnel, but is difficult to obtain a vacuum in the bush. This problem can be solved by using a small hand- queeze bellows such as used in priming petrol pumps on outboard petrol motors. The common laboratory hand bellows is not powerful enough.A 70 mm diameter two-piece polythene Buchner filter funnel (Fig. 1) can be used. A length of rubber tubing is fitted around the inlet valve of the hand bellows and this valve is then jammed into the pipe at the bottom of the filter funnel (the polythene pipe may be trimmed with a knife to fit over the inlet valve of the bellows). The vacuum is generated and maintained by squeezing the hand bellows.The technique of collecting a sample of the clay fraction is to dredge a sample of the fine-grained active stream sediment out of the stream with a container, such as a plastic mug. The sample is agitated to get the clay fraction into suspension and the muddy suspension is then decanted into the Buchner funnel. The desired clay fraction is obtained as a thin film on the filter paper.If the "fines" are also required, a filter of nylon bolting cloth (stretched across the mouth of a short length of 80 mm diameter polythene pipe and attached by rubber bands or a concentric polythene pipe) can be placed over the mouth of the Buchner funnel and the whole sample of stream sediment...

In June 1914, one week before I was to be awarded my sheepskin in upper New York State, I received a telegram from New York City which read "Can offer you position as engineer in Chile at $115 a month contract for one year. (signed) Chile Copper Co." That night, Friday, I took a sleeper to New York and arrived at the Guggenheim Brothers' company office at 165 Broadway, just as it was opening up on Saturday morning. Saturday was no holiday in that era. Presenting the telegram at the office, I was ushered into a sub-executive's office and shown a mimeographed contract which 1) agreed to pay me $115 per month from the date of leaving New York until I returned, and with travelling expenses both ways, 2) fixed a charge of $46 per month for board and lodging in company quarters, and 3) stipulated a contract term of one year with the right to retain my services for another year if the company so elected. While a bit huffed at the year's "kicker" I nevertheless accepted. I was then told to prepare to leave the following Wednesday (June 17) on a United Fruit Co. steamer for Panama. Objecting that I still had to receive my degree on the 17th and had planned a vacation in Ohio for a week or so…

When the mineral seekers came, they brought romance, excitement and, too often, transitory riches. It has been so for uncounted centuries. While the rich ore lasted, living was high and money flowed-mostly out of town. The whole creation was like a circus. The headframe went up like the center pole of the big top. The reduction works was an ingenious affair; an opportunity for self-expression by the mining engineer on the job. When the high grade gave out or the bottom dropped out of the market, the whole show folded. Machinery was scavenged for the next location. About all that was left were the raw footings, like giantsteps on the hillside; and the headframe above the silent diggings. Mostly, the people went away too. Arizona Territory was like that at the turn of the century. It can still happen. But, in copper, the age-old pattern has been disrupted. From Mineral Park in the northwest to Chino in the east and Cananea in the South, a growing number of companies have emerged-large, stable, productive. Southwest copper is truly a mighty industry, accounting for one fifth of world new copper production. In this period of scientific development, changes are fast, often dramatic. But even mining engineers, or possibly more so because they have an intimate knowledge of the industry, fail to appreciate the evolutionary changes that have shaped Southwest copper into what it is today.
