The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania). The results were confirmed by means of beneficiation tests on various types of ores, from the Kukes (Kalimash), from Bulquiza area and from the Rizo deposit (Greece). It has been demonstrated that when Na-K Oleate is used as collector chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH = 2.5 and/or 5.5 employing EDTA (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr2O3 content about 50%, at a recovery in excess of 65%.

Unique mineralogical and petrological properties of black shale in the copper ore deposit of the Foresudetic Monocline (SW Poland) resulting from three lithological layers have been described in terms of its unfavorable behavior in the ore processing circuits. A concept of processing of a part of the black shale fraction from the flotation circuit of the concentrating plant by separating a by-product enriched in the shale matter was presented. This by-product represents the tailings of the first cleaning flotation and, as a hard-to-treat circulating middlings, overload the cleaning operation in the flotation circuit. It was found that the investigated by-product cannot be effectively up-graded using standard xanthate flotation. This is due to a fine dissemination of sulfide minerals in the dolomitic and clay shale particles significantly enriched in organic carbon. The content of the organic carbon is similar to that in the petrographically "pure" black shales. After a comprehensive examination of the shale by-product it was recognized that the investigated middlings can be regarded as a specific shale concentrate for individual processing. The effect of non-oxidative leaching of middlings with sulfuric acid on their further flotation was presented. It was shown that non-oxidative leaching is a selective process, in which calcium and magnesium carbonates decomposition leads to effective liberation of sulfide minerals which were finely disseminated in the hydrophilic carbonate gangue. Leaching of the flotation feed with sulfuric acid selectively decomposes carbonate minerals and consequently enhances flotation results. Saturation of leaching slurry with gaseous carbon dioxide favorably creates non-oxidative conditions and leads to a great decrease of the electrochemical potential of sulfide particles as well as hinders their solubilization. Partial carbonates leaching from middlings resulted in evident liberation of valuable minerals. Consequently, it resulted in an increase of both recovery and grade of concentrates obtained by flotation of shale by-product after non-oxidative leaching.

A conductivity cell, developed previously, was employed in an effort to investigate the inter-relation between electrical conductivity and acidity of sulphuric acid - metal sulphate solutions at high temperatures. The measured solutions include the H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2O solutions. All solutions reported in this paper were measured from 15 to 250 °C at equilibrium vapour pressure. The maximum measured concentrations of H2SO4, MgSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 were 0.45 m, 0.30 m and 0.10 m, respectively. It was found that, from 15 to 250°C, there is a linear relationship between H2SO4 concentration and electrical conductivities for acid concentration up to 0.45 m. At 250 °C and constant H2SO4 concentration, the solution conductivity drops with the increase of MgSO4 concentration. Lt is suggested that this drop is caused by a decrease in the concentration of H. Finally, an empirical model was developed based on the available measurements. This model has been tested against real laterite leach solutions where sulphuric acid and metal sulphates are dominant electrolytes. The average difference between the estimate acid concentration from this model and the one from titration was less than 5%.

The reaction kinetics of the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock (32% P?05) using 45% nitric acid were investigated using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) , a newly developed Diffusion Model (DM) and a newly developed Combined Reaction and Diffusion Model (CRDM). This was achieved buy conducting a number of experiments in a controlled batch reactor system at different temperatures. The conversion and the reaction rate were calculated at different time intervals. The SCM based on reaction time and the CRDM characterize the acidulation process of phosphate rock. Diffusion of nitric acid and the products of acidulation at the early stages of reaction through the phosphate rock were found to be the rate-controlling step, resulting in a dif- fusion coefficient, which controls the mass transfer process. The reaction kinetics were found to fit first-order kinetics especially during early stages of reaction time. The deviation of the kinetics from first-order at later stages was due to the fact that the overall reaction was mass transfer controlled with respect to nitric acid and products diffusion.

"Augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) pile installation technology has matured extensively since the first auger, pressure grouted pile was patented in 1959. The current technology allows for successful pile installation across a variety of stratigraphies to meet various project load resistance requirements. This paper presents an overview of current ACIP techniques by comparing a number of case histories in a variety of geologic settings from Eastern Pennsylvania, New York City and New Jersey to demonstrate ACIP pile constructability in soft soils as well as the penetration, and resulting significant loads resisted, of ACIP piles in dense soils and intermediate geo-materials. Geologic settings that will be discussed include the Piedmont and Coastal Plain geologic provinces as well as glacial till deposits. The author uses the term efficiency to refer to the load resisted by a pile of a certain diameter and the increased efficiency noted refers to increased allowable loads over those traditionally resisted by piles of certain diameter (or a reduction in pile diameter from that which was traditionally used to support a certain design load). The performance and installation of ACIP piles in a variety of geologies in the Northeastern U.S. are discussed herein.PIEDMONT PHYSIGRAPHIC PROVINCEThe Piedmont physiographic province stretches from Alabama to the east through Georgia and up the east coast, just west of the Coastal Plain to Pennsylvania and New York (Brown, 2002). It generally consists of soils weathered in place from the underlying bedrock, which is typically a combination of granite, schist and gneiss depending on the location within the province. The author’s experience in the Northeastern US has been on sites where alluvial or coastal plain soils overly the residual soils and partially weathered or intact rock of the Piedmont. The example presented here, from a site on Walnut St in Philadelphia PA, is representative of these projects."

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID), apresentam em geral uma microestrutura composta de austenita e ferrita em proporções aproximadamente iguais. Para ter o controle dos processos de fabricação e desempenho é importante conhecer sua evolução microestrutural, devido à precipitação de fases intermetálicas como sigma (s) e chi (?), que causam grave deterioração das propriedades mecânicas do material. Neste trabalho foi estudada a evolução da fase sigma (s) durante tratamentos térmicos em temperaturas intermetálicas (800°C-900°C) de amostras do aço inoxidável duplex tipo SAF2205 (DIN 1.4462/UNS 31803). Foi observada uma gradual redução da intensidade do sinal do ruído de Barkhausen com o aumento do tempo de tratamento térmico, indicando uma redução na fração de fase ferromagnética. Para tempos de tratamento de 24 horas, o sinal de Ruído de Barkhausen está quase totalmente inserido dentro do ruído de fundo da medida, indicando haver uma fração volumétrica bastante reduzida de ferrita. Por meio da produção de amostras padrão para calibração, essa pode ser uma via de avaliação não destrutiva de componentes submetidos em campo a temperaturas nas quais se formam fases intermetálicas.

Entre los años 1929 y 1938 se realizaron estudios sobre el problema de los humos en La Oroya y de la construcción del Cottrell de Reverberos, la ampliación del Cottrell de Arsénico y la construcción de las 21 Unidades del Cottrell Central como unidades contrarrestadoras de los humos de mangas y de los convertidores. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el acondicionamiento de los humos con vapor de agua para ser tratadas en las unidades de precipitación electrostática denominada Cottrell. Para ello, el trabajo se divide en cuatro partes: la primera, describe el circuito de los humos (cobre y plomo) y las unidades de precipitación; la segunda, señala el funcionamiento de la precipitación electrostática; la tercera, refiere los problemas del procesador electrostático y la última, señala la modernización de las unidades de Cottrell.
