Dump leaching at Teller in its present form began in the fourth quarter of 1988 as an adjunct to milling operations. Initial plans called for a dedicated dump leach facility capable of processing ore at an annual rate of 2.0 million tonnes. Construction of a dump leach pad, collection and process ponds, carbon adsorption system, elution plant as well as reagent addition and ancillary facilities was initiated in mid-1988. During the course of construction, additional reserves were proven. As a result, design throughput was increased to 4.0 Mtpa. Leach pad capacity and solution supply systems were upgraded to handle the larger throughput. However, the carbon adsorption/elution facilities were not upgraded due to space limitations. During 1990 it was decided to expand the dump leach operation to 6.0 Mtpa. Construction of a second leach pad was required which was initiated in early-1991. Plans were again upgraded prior to completion to a target annual throughput of 10.0 million tonnes was. A further two leach pads have been constructed. The first of these being completed during the latter part of 1992. Construction of the latest and largest pad commenced early in 1994.

Once mining compromises the stability of a rock mass, the dangerous task of roof bolting begins. Many attempts have been made to automate this process, but there are still many refinements that need to be made. In the past, roof bolting modules were designed around the abilities of a human operator. Currently, researchers are taking a new approach that focuses on designing modules that can utilize bolting methods that are easily automated. A non-rotating anchor that is locked into position by a linear force (as opposed to a rotational force) was designed by researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Once the bolt is secured in the bolt-hole by the anchor, the bolt is tensioned and a collet is used to secure the other end of the bolt. This process replaces the traditional bolt-nut fastening method. This program is part of an effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to automate the coal mining process.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

Abstract - BHP Minerals discovered the Archean lode gold ULU deposit on the western margin of the High Lake Volcanic Belt in 1989. The greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks on the property are folded into a 5 km-long anticline. There is a close spatial association of Au-As zones to the trace of this F2 ULU anticline. The largest of these auriferous zones, the Flood zone, is localized at the core of the fold. The southeast-trending Flood zone consists of several anastomosing lenses that have been traced for 435 m on surface. Overall, it dips steeply (70° to 80°) to the southwest and has been intersected to depths below 600 m. The hosting high-iron tholeitic basalt displays a lower amphibolite mineral assemblage of ferrohornblende + plagioclase + ilmenite with accessory quartz and epidote. Alteration minerals include biotite, chlorite, hornblende, actinolite-tremolite, and potassium feldspar (microcline) with minor calcite, epidote, tourmaline, and titanite. The highest gold values occur where brecciated basaltic wall-rock clasts are replaced by acicular arsenopyrite + quartz + K-feldspar. BHP Minerals completed 54,783 m of both exploration and resource development drilling before selling the ULU property to Echo Bay Mines in 1995. Development of ULU as a satellite deposit to Echo Bay’s Lupin mine began in 1996. A -15% ramp was extended to the 155-meter level, and 16,011 m of underground drilling were completed before the decline in gold prices forced a suspension of activities at ULU in August 1997. The current owners, Wolfden Resources Inc., drilled 18,569 m in 2004 to increase confidence in the resource blocks. Following this drill program, a revised resource calculated by an independent consultant determined that the ULU deposit contains an inferred/indicated mineral resource of 1,130,000 t grading 11.34 g/t gold (373,748 oz) to the 360-m level. The portal was re-opened in 2005 and a prefeasibility study is underway.

Introduction The geological processes that form coal can also concentrate trace elements in the coal. For example, the average concentration of arsenic in bituminous coal (20 ppm) is ten times the average concentration found in all the other rocks that make up the earth's crust (2 ppm). Similarly, other elements, such as antimony, cadmium, mercury and selenium, are more concentrated in coal than in the earth's crust. When coal is burned, trace elements can be further concentrated. Although no new constraints on trace clement emissions were placed on the power generation industry under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the act does mandate a three-year study of air toxics. Any new regulations aimed at electric utilities as a result of this Federally-mandated study will almost assuredly be very costly-an estimated $1 billion per year. Many trace elements in coal are associated with mineral matter. For example, arsenic is commonly associated with pyrite, cadmium with sphalerite, chromium with clay minerals, mercury with pyrite and cinnabar, nickel with millerite, pyrite and other sulfides, and selenium with lead selenide, pyrite and other sulfides (Finkelman, 1980). There are also cases in which some of these elements are organically bound. Just as both organic and pyritic sulfur can be found in the same coal, the same trace element may be both organically bound and present as part of a mineral in the sane coal. Physical coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing mineral matter from coal and can potentially remove at least some of the trace elements associated with specific minerals, thereby reducing the release of these elements into the atmosphere. Conventional coal cleaning to remove trace elements As part of a project funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, CQ Inc., a wholly-owned EPRI subsidiary located in western Pennsylvania, has demonstrated that large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements are possible if conventional coal cleaning techniques are properly applied. Four examples are given in Tables 1 to 4. In each example, the results shown were generated by cleaning the coal at CQ Inc.'s commercial-scale cleaning test facility. Cleaning results for Upper Freeport Seam coal from Northern Appalachia are provided in Table 1. Data are presented in the table in two ways: as a weight-based concentration (parts per million) and as a concentration per heat unit (grams per billion Btu). Grams per billion Btu is analogous to pounds per million Btu, but avoids the use of numbers with many decimal places. The heat-based concentration provides a better measure of boiler impacts, because the increased heating value obtained through coal cleaning reduces the number of tons that must be burned to produce a given thermal output. Reducing the quantity of coal burned reduces the quantity of trace elements entering the boiler. This raw coal is relatively high in several trace elements of environmental concern, including arsenic, cadmium and chromium. Cleaning provided large reductions in the quantity of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc. The results for tests with a Powder River Basin coal, Rosebud/McKay, are presented in Table 2. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, fluorine, mercury, nickel, selenium and zinc were observed with cleaning. The concentration of chromium increased with cleaning, while lead concentration increased in one test and decreased in another. Table 3 presents test results for Croweburg Seam coal from Oklahoma. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium and zinc were obtained with cleaning. Smaller reductions were obtained with lead and nickel, while chromium, fluorine and mercury increased in at least one of the tests. Table 4 presents cleaning test data for Kentucky No.11 Seam coal. In this case, large reductions were obtained with all elements measured. In general, these data indicate that physical coal cleaning is effective in reducing the concentration of many trace elements, especially if they are present in the coal at relatively high concentrations. The degree of reduction achieved is coal-specific, relating in part to the degree of mineral association of the specific trace element and the degree of liberation of the trace element-bearing mineral. The extent of trace element removal also depends on the method of cleaning the coal. Figure 1 is a washability plot, by size fraction, of arsenic vs. ash content for Upper Freeport

At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

The principal thrust of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Coal Preparation R&D Program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. Specifically, the objective is to develop and refine cost-effective physical and chemical beneficiation processes to extract 85-95 percent of the total sulfur and ash. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas -coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations. This paper will provide a brief overview of many of the research projects being carried out in these areas in fiscal year 1984.

In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Some recent Prospectuses are used to provide examples of their misinterpretation and misapplication.

There are as varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there is replacement value, insurance value, salvage value, appraised value, book value, and fair market value, to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered are included the following: the discounted cash flow approach, the cost approach, the option pricing approach and the market comparables approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIM Special Committee on the Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal) expects that its final report will form the basis for a Canadian code or standard for the valuation of mineral properties."

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. This study shows that the ventilation and gas management systems of the Parvadeh_1 mine are in line with the standards of Australian underground mines.CITATION:Hasheminasab, F, Aminossadati, S M and Bagherpour, R, 2017. "Mining along with subsequent processing of the minerals often presents conditions where a wear- and/or corrosion-resistant alloy is needed to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency. This paper is intended to give an overview of the alloys that are currently being used, as well as those developed in recent years that could be used in the mining industry. Emphasis will be put on the iron-, nickel-,cobalt-based alloys and composites containing a variety of carbides. The characteristics, properties, product forms, and methods of application are presented. In addition, examples of the actual use of these wear-resistant materials are illustrated.IntroductionPreventing wear and corrosion is important in any industrial operations. In the mining industry, the process equipment typically suffers many different types of material degradation. Abrasion, impact, erosion, metal-to-metal wear and corrosion are typically encountered. Each situation requires different material characteristics to retard the degradation process. Therefore, it is essential to understand the characteristics of the materials and the effects of the alloying elements.There are four common classes of metallic materials for resisting wear and corrosion; namely, iron-based alloys, nickel-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, and carbide-containing composites. Each class of material has its own characteristics. Depending on the chemical composition, the materials within each class can be vastly different in properties. In recent years, there have been materials developed in each of the four classes using the knowledge of the metallurgical principles and the effects of the alloying elements on the material degradation process.To use a wear-resistant alloy, it is also necessary to understand the available product forms and their application methods. Weld overlaying is a traditional way of using these alloys (Wu and Redman, 1994). In recent years, thermal spray is becoming popular. For applications where over-laying and spraying are impractical, solid components can be made by a variety of casting and powder metallurgy techniques. They can also be fabricated from the wrought products.To select a proper material for an application, it is important to understand not only the characteristics of the wear-resistant materials but also the degradation process. Due to the complexity of the processing environments, past experience is also helpful in making the decision on the material selection."

LOCATION AND EXTENT OF BART TUNNELS The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) during the past six years has become the Owner of 23.5 miles of single-bore tunnels. The tunneling experience gained while working closely with our Engineer and Contractors in the design and construction of these major transit facilities provides a basis for our "Owners" viewpoint. The 23.5 miles of tunnels are divided into two categories. Fifteen and one-half (15-1/2) miles of tunnels were constructed in soft ground underlaying the downtown areas of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Eight (8) miles of tunnels were built in "hard ground" in the hills separating Oakland and Berkeley from Contra Costa County and in the San Francisco hills on the Mission Line. Location of tunnels within the BART system are shown on Figure 1. The tunnels comprise 15.7% of BART's 75-mile dual track system. Their 176 million dollar costs (excluding rail, electrification or ventilation features) are 12.4% of the system's total estimated cost of $1.4 billion. The tunnels constructed in soft ground were shield and boring machine driven with ground support provided by steel liner rings. The exterior diameter is 17 foot, 6 inches in the majority of tunnels; however, on two tunnels with a 500 foot radius of curvature, the diameter was 18 feet. BART awarded 14 contracts for soft ground tunneling. The work was accomplished under free air or compressed air depending upon the ground water and soil conditions, safety requirements, and considerations for protecting adjoining property from damage either from the de-watering operations or settlements due to excavation. Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals.

The leaching behavior of palladium powder in aqueous solutions containing NaCI or N'H4Cl was investigated. Cupric ion was used as an oxidant for the dissolution reaction. The effect of a number of leaching parameters such as temperature, concentration, stirring speed and surface area on the leaching rate was studied. The leaching system containing chloride and cupric ion was found to be very effective for the dissolution of metallic palladium. Based on the experimental results the overall leaching rate was believed to be controlled by a chemical reaction step. The dissolution rate of palladium was found to be first order with respect to the concentration of cupric ion and second order with respect to the concentration of chloride.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recept studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d18O values. Preliminary oxygen and carbon isotopic data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia have emphasized the diverse origins of their ore fluids.The Mount Morgan gold-copper orebody is shown to be of the volcanogenic massive sulphide type with ore fluids predominantly of sea water origin. The Charters Towers fissure veins formed during hydrothermal activity associated with intrusion of Lolworth Igneous Complex equivalents. Oxygen isotopic studies of the quartz reefs at Stawell and Gympie have been inconclusive. The ore fluids have a d18O value of about 7 per mil and may be of magmatic or metamorphic derivation.

A post-detonation debris collection project was led in conjunction with a large ammonium nitrate(AN) railcar detonation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security-Transportation Security Administration, Department of Defense-Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Grounds. This important work will aid in underpinning algorithms used in a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool. The test also provided valuable data about the effects and consequences following an AN detonation. The test took place at the Utah Dugway Proving Grounds on April 27, 2018 and the debris collection was conducted the following two weeks with an average of 20 persons per day and an approximate total of 1,400 manhours. A paper was presented at the 2019 ISEE Conference on the collection efforts, challenges, and lessons learned. A complete data analysis effort was completed on the test data in 2019 that resulted in updates to the QRA Railcar Potential Explosion Site (PES)model and AN engine. The analysis included an assessment of the debris data resulting from the Derailed test. This paper is meant to serve as a summary of the analysis effort and findings and as an update to the previously presented lessons learned from the debris collection and analysis effort.
