Frothing behavior of surfactants originate from their preferential adsorption at the gas-solution interface. Different surfactants may demonstrate different adsorption behaviors depending on their molecular structure and surface activity. The quantity and rate of adsorption of surfactants at the gas- solution interface in flotation systems will certainly affect kinetics of reaction and fractionation of surfactant between bulk and foam phase and subsequently their frothing characteristics. In this paper, the frothing characteristics of sodium oleate which is the main constituent of fatty acids used in flotation systems is explained. The adsorption behavior of sodium oleate is then compared to a typical non-ionic frother (Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol, MIBC) in terms of different adsorption behavior at the gas-solution interface. Since long chain fatty acids are weak electrolytes, their behavior is a strong function of pH. Also semi soluble salts including apatite contain considerable amounts of ions like calcium in their lattice, so the effect of presence of ions on the frothing behavior of fatty acids requires an investigation. A mass balance on the surfactant transferred to the foam was solved to estimate the bubble surface area flux in foam, which explained how the adsorbed surfactant at gas-solution interface controls the bubble surface area flux at foam. Since sodium oleate adsorption at foam takes place gradually, frother concentration as a function of time was monitored by the total organic carbon measurement (TOC) to compare the surfactant uptake rate at different concentrations, pH and ionic strength. The surfactant concentration adsorbed within foam together with the value of adsorption density from the Gibbs adsorption, leads to the calculation of the surface area flux and prediction of average bubble size in the foam at a specific time frame. This value was compared at different concentrations of sodium oleate. Dynamic surface tension measurements were accompanied to explain the adsorption behavior, though finally equilibrium surface tension turns out to better explain the foamability characteristics. An investigation into the hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine smithsonite in surfactant solution has been undertaken through a combination of hydrophobic flocculation experiments, zeta potential measurements, surface tension measurements, and contact angle measurements. The experimental results have revealed that the behaviors of hydrophobic aggregation were closely correlated with the particle hydrophobicity, but they were not lowered byte change of the particle surface charges due to surfactants adsorption. On the other hand, the liquid (solution) surface tension (?LV) plays an important role in hydrophobic aggregation, and the hydrophobic aggregation could not occur below the critical liquid (solution) surface tension (?c). Meanwhile, this flocculation has been observed to require sufficient stirring strength and magnitudes of kinetic energy input to achieve the maximum aggregation degree. From the microflotation results, it has been found that the flotation kinetics response of smithsonite fines is markedly improved due to sufficient stirring strength, and the stirring strength influenced the floc flotation in a manner quite similar to their influence on the hydrophobic aggregation, suggesting that the formation of hydrophobic flocs is a promising means to recover smithsonite in the fine size range.

The experiment adopted magnetic separation-priority flotation (first to float copper,then float lead) combined technology to deal with a complex Cu,Pb ,Zn multi-metals ore which has high sulphur content, difficult to separate Cu, Pb ,Zn minerals from sulphur and separate Cu from Pb. Floatable pyrrhotite was separated through magnetic separation which could eliminate the adverse effect on the flotation followed up. And then adopting the priority flotation process to recover the Cu, Pb ,Zn from the magnetic tailings. In priority, flotation Cu, BP(a kind of ethionine ester collector ) and ethyl xanthogenate were used as the collector, LD-1 and sodium sulphite were used as the depressant.The depressants combined with humic acid sodium and lime were used for chalcopyrite ? pyrite separation to further improve the copper concentrate grade. Considering the raw ore that contain 0.32% copper, 0.54% lead and 25.54% sulfur. The copper concentrate grade is 23.61%. The lead content of copper concentrate is only 0.85% . The recovery of copper is 75.03%,and the lead concentrate grade is 54.58%, the copper content of lead concentrate is only 0.81% and the recovery of lead concentrate is 62.24%. The mineral processing indexes were excellent, finally realizing the high effective separation of Cu, Pb , Zn and pyrite. This technique provides a new approach to highly utilize complex copper-lead-zinc ore.

The present study is devoted to improvement of the leaching efficiency during phosphorous removal from high phosphorous gravity-magnetic concentrate. Before leaching the concentrate has been subjected to roasting with the addition of either Ca(OH)2 or CaO. The oolitic iron ore is roasted at 900°C for one hour. This reflects in reaction between alkaline earth additive and quartz, aluminosilicates, phosphorus, and some other minor components of the gangue minerals. The application of leaching, physical separation, and wash out of salts has resulted in the decrease of phosphorus from 0.7 to 0.15 % and it is established that the major influencing factor is the concentration of acid and to a less extent duration of the leaching process. About two third of the phosphorus can be removed by roasting with 3 % CaO to hematite, coarse grinding to d50 0.3 mm, dry high intensity magnetic separation and leaching of the magnetic fraction with hydro-chloric or nitric acid.

This paper presents the outcomes of the preliminary investigation focused on the potential usage of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in minerals processing. Currently, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the characterization of multilayer structures formed as molecules adsorb on flat surfaces and is commonly used in bio-related research. Few studies have explored the application of EIS in minerals processing, particularly for mineral particles and flotation systems. In the first series of tests, the impedance response was investigated as a function of particle size, shape and hydrophobicity using model quartz particles. The particle size fractions and the shape were found to contribute to the impedance response. The more hydrophobic quartz particles resulted in a higher impedance values. Further tests involved pure sulfide minerals including chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The AC impedance measurements were conducted as a function of collector (sodium ethyl xanthate) dosage. The AC Impedance data was modeled using the combination of reference circuits. It has been shown that adsorption of collector onto sulfide minerals surfaces results in a higher magnitude of impedance. Increasing the collector dosage resulted in an increase in AC impedance for chalcopyrite, while a decrease was observed for chalcocite. Significant variations in impedance were exhibited by bornite and pyrite with a gradual increase in collector dosage.

Kaolin clay is used as a filler and pigment in various applications such as paper, paint, rubber, plastics, adhesives, ink and ceramics etc. Major mineral content in crude kaolin clay is kaolinite along with some accessory minerals as quartz, hematite, mica, feldspar, anatase, rutile, illemnite etc. The Fe and Ti bearing minerals play very important role in determining quality of the kaolin, as these minerals impart yellow, pink or darker color to the white kaolin. Conventional beneficiation methods used in kaolin processing are de-gritting, classification and sodium dithionite bleaching, which improves the optical properties of kaolin, wherein reduction of color imparting constituents such as Fe2O3 and TiO2 is marginal. In the present study, these coloring impurities are separated using selective adsorption of water-soluble polymers. Degritted kaolin samples after passing through 45 micron sieve is used in the study for selective flocculation by polyacrylamide based polymers. The effect of pH, zeta potential, and polymer dose on the reduction of impurities is studied. Analytical tools such as XRF, XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques are utilized and results are discussed in detail.

In looking to the future of mineral processing the focus is typically on improved processing units. Basically it is a search for an elusive wonder machine that could revolutionise the economy of mining: the sorter that strips 50% of the ore with only a few % loss of value; the comminution device that uses 5% of the energy while producing fully liberated particles; or the recovery device capable of producing a 99% recovery at 99% grade. These aspirations are propounded against a reality backdrop of sorters rusting in back yards, mill throughputs below design and varying by 30%, cyclones flaring and cut-sizes fluctuating, mediocre recoveries and soaring processing costs. This disconnect between aspiration and reality appears, to these authors at least, to be a mighty chasm. Moreover, it remains one over which we are expected to magically leap rather than methodically bridge. Indeed one may be forgiven for thinking that should such a wonder machine come along, taking advantage of it would be highly improbable. Questions would inevitably emerge on how to feed the correct material, how to cope with the wide variability of feeds, how to control such advanced equipment and how to handle the new product from such a machine. It is likely these questions might lie unanswered, or more regrettably, unasked. It is generally accepted that as an industry we are exceedingly unlikely to teleport from the current status quo to an entirely new reality in a single flash. It is our thesis that the probability of these magical machines materialising is remote, and even if they miraculously appeared, we simply wouldn?t know what to do with them. Rather, it is our contention, that a step change will only arise through a staircase rather than from a single giant leap. We should focus on building those steps and linking them together into a firm structure ? a workable mineral processing circuit. This paper addresses the alternative of a coherent set of modest but significant improvements, integrated to produce the step change we desire: essentially, a reduction of processing energy to below 40%, which we believe is achievable without recourse to any mystical machines. A key underlying capability to designing these dramatically improved processes, is the weaving of independent process models into a coherent circuit simulation, in order to design the new generation of mineral processing circuits. Possibilities of the analysis of potential energy of bubble-particle interaction on the basis of extended DLVO theory are discussed. Interaction energies of mineral silica, coal and pyrite particles with contact angles from 20 to 100 degrees and air bubbles in neutral and alkaline solutions are analyzed. It is shown that for hydrophilic silica, the formation of particle-bubble complexes (either in the area of primary or secondary potential minima) is impossible due to the high potential barriers (from 6000 to 140000 kT)and low values of the attraction force. There is shown that for coal and pyrite particles the energy of interaction vs. particle-bubble distance strongly depends on pH value. Improvement of floatability of minerals by the hydrophobization of their surface by collectors leads to the eliminating of potential barriers and the formation of the stable complexes of minerals and air bubbles in the area of primary potential minimum. In addition, due to hydrophobization of coal and pyrite changing pH has practically no influence on the energy of interaction. There are discussed results of the numerical calculations of normalized interaction forces in particle-bubble systems on the nanometer distances for pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite at contact angles up to 85° in comparison with the experimental data. The values of adhesion force for hydrophobized particles of coal and pyrite to air bubbles are about 10-5 N, that indicates stability of the formed flotation complexes. Examples of using the long-range and high-energy effect of hydrophobic interactions for improving minerals floatability are discussed. There are illustrated minerals wettability changes induced by the adsorption of thiol collector and hydrophobic polymer. Possibilities of flocculation and flotation of mineral slimes due the polymer-collector hydrophobic interactions are shown. Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry. Pyrite is present as a gangue mineral in most of complex sulphide ores and most of time it is removed as a tailing. However, beneficiation of pyrite from tailings could be important because of its economical value and for the environmental concern. This paper presents a research for the enrichment of pyrite from copper plant tailings, Siirt-Madenköy/Turkey, by flotation. Siirt-Madenköy copper mine is operated by Park Electric Production Mining and Industry since 2005. In order to obtain the pyrite from Siirt-Madenköy copper plant tailings, laboratory test work has to be done to determine the type of reagents, the flowsheet, and the size of plant. The objective of the company is to develop a pyrite flotation circuit for concentration of pyrite from tailing dam to obtain 500.000 tons/year pyrite concentrate. There are about 3 million tons tailings that containing pyrite in the tailings dam. Experiments were carried out with three different types of tailings from the plant and the pyrite concentrate with 46% Fe and 90% recovery has been obtained. Therefore, this study shows that high grade pyrite with high recovery can be recovered from the tailings.

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

The significant capital and operating expenditure of size reduction operations have maintained comminution on the spotlight of mineral processing research during the last century and, more recently, the concerns about the impact of these operations on the sustainability of the minerals industry, will remain to do so in the 21st century. One of the most popular approaches that have been used to deal with these challenges is the application of simulation both to reduce the uncertainty in the design and improve the operation of size reduction operations. From the initially purely empirical approaches, including the energy size reduction ?laws? and the phenomenological approaches, of which the traditional population balance model is, arguably, the best example, comminution modeling now reached a point in which more fundamental and mechanistic models are sought. The paper analyzes some of the advances that now make multiscale modeling of comminution processes realizable. On the microscale, greater understanding of the phenomena involved in fracture and fragmentation of single particles under different stressing conditions now exists. Particle breakage testing methods are currently used in a routine basis by industry and good quantitative descriptions of different breakage mechanisms are now available, although research is still required to develop appropriate models for a couple of them. On the macroscale phenomena, the discrete element method (DEM) has been successfully used not only to provide insights but also quantitative information on the transfer of mechanical energy from the machine to the grinding media in mills and to particles in crushers, while smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to describe fluid flow. The paper also analyzes the importance of modeling mesoscale phenomena in size reduction, which is the interaction of particles forming assemblies or beds of particles, demonstrating some of the areas requiring further attention. Examples of application of the multiscale modeling approach to the inadvertent comminution of ore lumps during handling, to the comminution in vertical impact crushers and tumbling mills are demonstrated. The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Axis House manufactures and supplies alkylhydroxamate reagent of various carbon chain lengths for application in flotation of oxide copper and other minerals. As part of reagent performance improvement the structural factors of hydroxamate are examined by various analytical tools in particular with X-ray diffraction of single crystals. In a recent publication, the structure of n-octylhydroxamic acid and its corresponding potassium salt are presented with findings of hydroxamic functional group geometric preference, H-bonding, keto-enol tautomerisation, acid-salt aggregation and alignment of carbon chain. In this paper an example of branched alkylhydroxamate 3, 5, 5-trimethylhexylhydroxamate will be presented and compared with the result of linear alkylhydroxamate.

The mineral suspensions do not present a newtonian behavior as their continuous phase; they can be pseudoplastic, dilatant, or both. The viscosity becomes as the most important rheological variable because the different industrial processes involve a wide variety of rheological scenes, with a specific rheological behavior for each one. Some authors have tried to model the viscosity of suspensions considering the volumetric fraction of solids and others have also kept in mind the size of the particles (Einstein, 1906; Batchelor, 1977; Jinescu, 1974; Krieger and Dougherty, 1959; Tangsathitkulchai and Austin, 1988). Others consider the shear rate (Cross, 1965; Hershel-Bulckley, 1926; Bingham, 1916, etc). However, none of the models is able to simulate the viscosity involving the physical, chemical and mechanic factors at the same time for crowded suspensions. A new model based on Neural Networks is presented, taking into account all the variables of ceramic clay suspensions and chemical additives. A continuum based granular flow model of charge motion that combines the inherent frictional nature of particles with its distinctly fluid-like structure is presented. Starting with Newton?s 2nd Law on a volume element of charge, we derive the velocity field in the bed free-surface and the rising en-masse region. Invoking flux conservation within the two regimes of interest then yields a (simple) differential equation for the free-surface of the charge body. Combining the velocity field gradients with a suitable constitutive choice for the shear stress completes the picture with a description of the in-situ rate of shear power dissipation in a tumbling mill ? a mechanistically correct account of power draw in a tumbling mill. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) was used to measure the in-situ flow fields of the charge within opaque systems like tumbling mills. The accurate velocity and mass distribution derived from PEPT form the basis for direct verification of the resulting granular flow models. In this regard a wide range of milling conditions is investigated and presented in this paper.

Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps in mineral processing allocating about 70% of the total energy in the plants. Nowadays, for optimizing the energy consumption in these equipments, the rock behavior and its size distribution during the crushing have been normally predicted using selection and breakage functions to be able to optimally model and design grinding circuits. For this purpose, the case of Miduk copper mine in Kerman province, Iran was studied. The samples were taken from primary ball mills feed and were subject to screen analysis to achieve uniform sizes. Then, selection and breakage functions were determined at the different grinding times in laboratorial ball mill. Finally, ore size distribution in different grinding times was estimated using MATLAB software

Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores in worldwide and also in Iran, Nowadays special attentions have been drawn to the extraction of zinc from its other resources such as low-grade oxide ores and secondary resources. Oxide ore of the eastern part of Mehdi-abad lead and zinc mine is silicate and has an average grade of 7% (with cut off grade of 4%). Main mineral of the Mehdi-abad ore is Hemimorphite and this mineral is associated with Goethite, Hematite, Ferrous Dolomite, and Manganese oxide mineral so that oxides of Iron, manganese and silica include almost 50% of the total ore. In this paper, the results obtained from the leaching kinetic study of the low-grade zinc oxide ore using Sulfuric acid are presented. The effects of particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percent on the dissolution rate have been investigated. The results obtained from the Taghochi approach showed that the zinc recovery is about 78% under the following optimized conditions: particle size: 106µm, leaching time: one hour, temperature: 45°C, acid concentration: 15% and solid percent: 15%.
