The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.

"The quality of machined surface is becoming more and more important to satisfy the increasing demand of component performance and its reliability. While machining any component, it is necessary to satisfy the surface integrity requirements. Heat treatment plays an important role in improving the characteristics of the material.This work investigates the effect of heat treatment on the surface characteristics of AISI D2 tool steel after Wire-Electro Discharge Machining (W-EDM). The test specimens were prepared by hardening and tempering and then machined with Wire-Electro Discharge Machining process. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness and micro hardness tests were conducted to study the surface characteristics of the machined surface. After characterization based on microstructures and test results, it is observed that the recast layer droplets are of smaller size with reduced white layer thickness resulting in higher hardness and lower surface roughness.IntroductionWith the development of mechanical industry, the requirement of alloy materials having high hardness, toughness and impact resistance is increasing. At the same time the quality of machined surface is becoming more and more important to satisfy the increasing demands of component performance and reliability. "It has been demonstrated that metallic-bearing minerals are physically liberated from host rock when exposed to microwave (MW) energy. The metallic minerals are iron sulfides and spinel oxide minerals contained in peridotite rock. Experimental evidence has shown ore particles readily couple with MW energy at 2.45 GHz, 1000 W resulting in rapid heating. Thermal stresses are generated by highly absorbing metallic-bearing minerals resulting in cracking and embrittlement of ore particles that assists in crushing and grinding processes. The liberated metallic-bearing minerals are shown to report to coarser size fractions as a result of MW exposure.IntroductionComminution of ore material during beneficiation is a large energy expenditure for the mineral processing industry. Crushing and grinding operations alone consume 50-70% amount of energy used in mineral processing [1]. Size reduction becomes increasingly difficult with decreasing particle size making grinding the most energy-intensive step of comminution. The aim of comminution is to maximize liberation of economically valuable minerals from the host rock [2]. Overall, the less material that needs to be handled, then grinded, to create a useful product for hydro/pyro metallurgical processes will achieve the greatest reduction of energy.Much of the scientific interest for use of microwave (MW) energy in mineral processing has been for improved hydro/pyro metallurgical techniques [3-6]. Early authors have employed MW energy for improved grinding of ore particles but most conclude the energy savings do not justify the energy input [7-9]. The effectiveness of MW assisted grinding is dependent on the ore mineralogy and the absorptive properties of minerals contained within it. Ore containing magnetic minerals should prove successful with MW assisted breakage from highly absorptive properties."

This paper presents the results of a detailed geotechnical study on the potential multiple seam interaction between the No. 2 Gas (upper) and the Powellton seams, which are separated by an average interburden of 45 ft. The interburden consists of 4 ft of clay shale below the No. 2 Gas seam, 38 ft of massive sandstone, and 3 ft of shale above the Powellton seam. The No. 2 Gas seam was mined about 60 years ago, and many water-pooled areas were projected to be present. The deepest overburden over the No. 2 Gas seam is about 750 ft. To evaluate the potential interaction between the two mine works and to determine the pillar safety factor, Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) software was initially used to determine pillar dimensions to obtain a minimum safety factor of 2.0 for areas under pooled water, as well as a minimum safety factor of 1.5 for areas not under pooled water. Furthermore, to assess the quality of the interburden rock strata, two surface core holes were drilled, and rock cores were tested in the laboratory for their strength and elastic moduli. Using the experimentally determined strengths and moduli as part of the input parameters, the RocScience Phase2 finite element program was employed to model the stress field scenarios and estimate the safety factors of the interburden rock strata before and after Powellton seam mining. The pillar safety factors derived from the Phase2 analysis were in excellent agreement with those obtained from the AMSS analysis. Phase2 results also predicted that the effect of the Powellton seam mining, first mining only, would reach a maximum of 19 ft above the Powellton seam, which led to the proposal of drilling 25-ft deep test holes to detect water, instead of the 45-ft deep test holes mandated by MSHA. The proposed test-hole height was accepted by both Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) District 4 and the state of West Virginia. Mining of the Powellton coal seam commenced in February 2011 and continued for eight months. To date, no 25-ft deep hole has encountered water under the water-pooled zone, which validates the RocScience Phase2 finite element analysis. Also, inmine observation of excellent pillar stability and roof condition confirms the validity of the AMSS analysis.

One of the earliest records of metal recovery by solution leaching is described by Agricola as 'juice of rock' in the 1550s. In these early years of hydrometallurgy and civil engineering, few controls and systems were employed to enhance recovery and protect the environment. Since that time, leaching (dump or heap) operations have made significant strides in increasing metal and solution recovery while protecting the environment, all goals of a sustainable operation. It is now recognized that the design and operation of modern heap leach facilities requires contributions from many fields of study, including hydrometallurgy, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, unsaturated-flow hydrology, mine planning, geosynthetics engineering, geochemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. While advancements in these fields have resulted in more sustainable heap leach operations, challenges in the industry still exist. A number of heap leach operations exhibit poor or lower-than-predicted metal recovery, loss of solution flow and control within the ore heap, loss of ore heap stability under leach, failure of liner and/or solution recovery systems, and overtopping of process water ponds. A number of these issues may be the result of several compounding conditions. For example, poor metal recovery may be due to an inadequate scale-up assumption (scaling laboratory tests to field-size heaps), lack of control of the in-heap geochemical environment, changes in ore mineralogy from the original design, changes in mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ore from the original design, ore handling and pre-treatment, inadequate solution management system, and inadequate solution application. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss issues that may affect the sustainability of a heap leach operation. Since sustainability encompasses a broad range of topics and issues, the focus of this paper will be on issues affecting metal and solution recovery, solution flow and containment, and stability of the ore heap.

"Electro-assisted reduction is an effective pretreatment to render chalcopyrite less refractory towards oxidative leaching. In this process, chalcopyrite is selectively converted to chalcocite or copper metal in an electrolytic cell under ambient conditions, while ferrous ion is leached into solution. However, the reaction velocity is hampered by the formation of a ferrous sulfide passivating layer on the solid surface, especially at elevated solid to liquid ratios. In the present work, several strategies for overcoming this problem were evaluated. On one hand, specific ligands for ferrous ion were added in order to increase its solubility and, on the other, an anode material which promotes the oxidation of the sulfide ion was chosen. Leaching tests showed citric acid to be an effective ligand for both ferrous and ferric ions and, in combination with a lead-silver anode, significantly increased the kinetics of chalcopyrite reduction and subsequent copper leaching.IntroductionAttempts to oxidize chalcopyrite at a rapid rate in aqueous solutions, below their normal boiling point, have met with difficulties because of passivation by some of its own components. An alternative line of research explores reductive pretreatment, transforming the chalcopyrite into less refractory copper phases, which can later be oxidized. A recompilation of these efforts up until 2000 was published by Dreisinger and Abed [1]. This paper documents the use of bench testing equipment developed to enhance the understanding of, and improve upon, common roof bolt support systems. Most roof bolt systems consist of components that are covered within the scope of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. However, ASTM does not specify testing methods or performance standards for complete roof bolt ?systems?. It only designates testing methods and minimum performance standards for roof bolt ?components?. Improved understanding and continuous improvement of these systems is essential given the enormous impact that they have on the safety and profitability of underground mining operations. Bench testing equipment has been developed that effectively measures and records multiple points of deformation in a rock bolt support system while load is being applied. With this testing capability, an improved understanding of component and system stress distribution can be obtained and devices and methods for visual load indication can be developed. This paper is formatted as case studies where testing was performed to demonstrate load versus deformation profiles and to develop system improvement products.

"Phase transitions of the potential hydrogen storage compound, ammonia borane (NH3.BH3), was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and a diamond anvil cell at high pressures up to 9.5 GPa and low temperatures down to 90K. At room temperature, ammonia borane has three phase transitions in this pressure range. Upon cooling, four new phases were discovered through changes in characteristic Raman spectra. This result provides information about the stability of new bonding characteristics of this potential hydrogen storage material at low temperature and high pressure region.IntroductionDevelopment of hydrogen technology requires the safe, efficient and environmental friendly materials for hydrogen storage and hydrides have attracted much attention as hydrogen storage media. Among chemical hydrides, ammonia borane (BH3NH3) stands out due to its high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen density ' "". Despite high hydrogen content, this compound is very stable. It releases hydrogen in several steps by thermal decomposition in the temperature range of 100°C to 500°C. Direct thermal decomposition also causes toxic borazine emission. Recent research interests on ammonia borane include destabilizing this compound to lower the dehydrogenation temperature with an enhanced hydrogen release rate using different techniques, e.g. the nanoscaffolds'', ionic liquids"" and acid'"" or transition metal catalysts' ""'. As a molecule of ammonia borane consists of protonic (NH) and hydritic (BH) hydrogens bonded by the polarized dative bond, thermal or catalyzed decomposition requires breaking of N-H and B-H bonding. Still now, the detailed information about the bonding characteristics of ammonia borane is not sufficient to understand details about its phases and structures. The development of methods to enhance hydrogen discharge rate from ammonia borane requires a detailed study about the structural and dynamical properties that control the stability and the intermolecular interactions of this material. This study is motivated to investigate the stability of the existing phases and also to explore the existence of any new phases at different temperatures and pressures which may have enhanced hydrogen release and uptake properties."

With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

There are many near-surface deposits with considerable vertical extent that have the potential to be mined by a combined method of open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, there is often a point called ?transition depth? where a decision has to be made whether to continue deepening the pit or change to underground methods. Recently, optimization of the transition from open-pit to underground operation has become an important challenge in mining engineering. Optimally, to model the transition problem on the basis of maximization of the profit from open-pit and underground mining, (0-1) integer programming has been used. In this method, block economic values of open-pit and underground methods should be imported to the transition model. A hypothetical example is presented in order to assess the model in detail.

Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

Deciding on plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g/t of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

ABSTRACT The comparative economics of ion exchange and direct precipitation have been analyzed by developing indicative CAPEX/OPEX models for typical alkaline leach uranium circuits. An agitated tank ore leach application is considered, comparing resin-in-pulp and direct precipitation as recovery options. Capital and operating cost estimates are derived from rates and factors used in recent studies and projects. The analysis showed the main economic drivers to be the ore grade and resin loading. The resin loading is impacted by the prevalence of competing ions, especially chloride. At resin-in-pulp solution chloride concentrations below 3 g/L and uranium grade below 640 g/t U3O8, resin-in-pulp is more economical, whereas at chloride concentrations above 3 g/L, direct precipitation is more economical.

CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

"Manganese ore fines, generated during mining and transportation, can not be added to the submerged arc furnace directly as they will prevent even gas flow through the burden. Low gas permeability in the burden will lower the degree of pre-reduction of ore and subsequently increase the carbon and energy consumption of the process. In order to utilize manganese ore fines in the furnace they are agglomerated into sinter, pellet or briquettes. The agglomeration process will however change the reduction properties of the ore. In this work the melting and reduction properties of sinter has been investigated.The melting temperature and melting mechanisms has been studied. The mineralogy of the raw ores and agglomerated has been found using XRD, and the composition established using EPMA(WDS). The effect of adding fluxes such as dolomite and quartz has also been investigated.IntroductionManganese metal is produced in a submerged electric arc furnace or in blast furnaces. The reduction of manganese oxide in blast furnace has in the recent years become more unusual due to the high consumption of reducing carbon material[5]. Manganese metal for alloying in steel usually contains silicon and iron, and are therefore called ferro manganese and silicomanganese.During mining, transportation and handling the manganese ore is broken up into different size fractions. The larger lump are used directly in the electric arc furnace, but the finer materials can not be added without treatment. The fine ore can disrupt the flow of CO and CO2 gas through the burden, subsequently reducing the degree of pre-reduction. The fine fractions must therefore be agglomerated into larger lumps, in order to promote gas flow. This can be achieved through a number of different processes. The agglomerate used in this work has been sintered, which means that is has been partly molten and reduced, in order to create bigger lumps."

When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.
