"Advanced radiation resistant oxide dispersion strengthened steel (ARROS) is being developed as a fuel cladding tube material for future nuclear reactor system applications. The research activities consist of advanced radiation resistant ODS steel development and fabrication technology development of ODS steel structural components. One candidate material with a chemical composition of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3and was selected as representative materials, and this material was named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).On the basis of this ODS steel composition, an optimized fabrication process of structural components such as plates, sheets and tubes has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot/cold working, and heat treatment processes. These R&D activities are expected to contribute to the realization of ODS materials in the future.INTRODUCTIONA sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) with a view to economics, safety, reliability, and sustainability. The prototype Gen-IV SFR with a capacity of 150 MWe is under design, and this prototype reactor is scheduled to operate from 2028. For a commercial SFR system application, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high creep strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures (Jeong, 2014). Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS)steel is one of the most promising structural materials because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density, which is extremely stable at high temperatures under a neutron irradiation environment for a prolonged operating period(Kim, 2016). As the first step, several batches of ODS steel were designed and the candidate samples with a 2 kg scale each were fabricated by mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling processes. The mechanical properties of these samples were evaluated. Up to now, two candidate materials with chemical compositions of (in wt%) Fe-10Cr-1Mo-0.5Mn-0.1V-0.25Ti-0.35Y2O3 was selected as representative materials, and these materials were named as the advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROSTM).The next step was to optimize the fabrication process of the ARROS compositions for in-core structural components such as the fuel cladding tubes of a SFR. An optimized fabrication process of fuel cladding tube with a composition of ARROS has been established through various process conditions in mechanical alloying, hot consolidation, hot/cold working and heat treatment processes. Joining technologies of the ODS steel tubes is being developed using solid-state welding such as magnetic pulse welding, friction stir welding and diffusion boding. It is expected that the development of ARROS will contribute to the realization of a commercial SFR with high economics and sufficient safety in the future. In this paper, the study of fabrication process of ARROS structural components is introduced."

"Can the increasing tonnages of ore and waste mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each stage of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in material handling from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year.RÉSUMÉ Le recours à des concasseurs plus grands et plus performants suffit-il à gérer l’augmentation du tonnage du minerai et des déchets que l’on extrait de nos jours ? Cet article examine les tous derniers modèles de concassage primaire et de grands concasseurs à cône. Il montre que, pour satisfaire aux exigences de production plus conséquente des exploitations minières existantes et nouvelles, il est important d’optimiser les taux d’utilisation à chacune des étapes du circuit de réduction de la taille des roches, en plus d’utiliser les concasseurs plus grands actuellement disponibles. Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications have since become available.The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since a person first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages:• stage 1: mining (rock breakage and fragmentation);• stage 2: prescreening (scalping);• stage 3: primary crushing; and• stage 4: fine crushing (secondary, tertiary, and quaternary).Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments play a key role in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit."

"Current coal pillar design is the epitome of suspension design. A defined weight of potentially unstable overburden material is estimated, and the dimensions of the pillars left behind are based on holding up that material to a prescribed or user-defined Factor of Safety. In principle, this is seemingly no different to early roadway roof support design. However, for the most part, roadway roof stabilisation has progressed to reinforcement, whereby the roof strata is assisted in supporting itself. This is now the mainstay of efficient and effective underground coal production. Suspension and reinforcement are fundamentally different in their roadway roof stabilisation approach and, importantly, lead to substantially different requirements in terms of roof support hardware characteristics and their application. In suspension design, the primary focus is the total load-bearing capacity of the installed support to ensure that it is securely anchored outside of the potentially unstable roof mass. In contrast, reinforcement recognises that roof de-stabilisation is a gradational process with an ever-increasing roof displacement magnitude leading to ever-reducing stability. In a reinforcing situation, key roof support characteristics relate such design issues as system stiffness, the location and pattern of support elements within the roadway, and mobilising a defined thickness of the immediate roof to create (or build) some form of stabilising strata beam. The objective is to ensure that horizontal stress acts across the roof of the roadway and is maintained at a level that prevents mass roof collapse. This paper presents a prototype coal pillar and overburden system representation where reinforcement, rather than suspension, of the overburden is the stabilising mechanism via the action of in situ horizontal stresses within the overburden, the suspension problem potentially being an exception rather than the rule, as is also the case in roadway roof stability. Established principles relating to roadway roof reinforcement can potentially be applied to coal pillar design under this representation. The merit of this assertion is evaluated according to documented failed pillar cases in a range of mining applications and industries found in a series of published databases. Based on the various findings, a series of coal pillar system design considerations and suggestions for bord and pillar type mine workings are provided. This potentially allows a more flexible and informed approach to coal pillar sizing within workable mining layouts, as compared to common industry practices of a single design Factor of Safety (FoS) under defined overburden dead-loading to the exclusion of other potentially relevant overburden stabilising influences."

"The New Orleans area has been repeatedly flooded by major storms and hurricanes since its French colonial era. After severe flooding in May 1995, the U.S. Congress authorized a massive flood protection project called the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Program (SELA) in 1996 to improve interior drainage in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes. However, the project was not fully funded before the landing of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Rita, which breached many of the area’s levees and flooded 80 percent of the city. Finally, the project was fully funded in 2008 and has been worked on towards its 2017 completion. Another large project simultaneously worked on in the area is the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). This system was designed for a 100-year level of flood risk reduction. One particular project within the HSDRRS rendered successful due to an unconventional method of pile driving that was utilized to install sheet piles to reinforce an existing concrete I-wall. This paper will discuss how and why this non-vibratory method of sheet pile installation allowed the project to be successfully completed ahead of schedule.INTRODUCTIONSteel sheet piles were utilized on many of the SELA and HSDRRS projects for permanent cutoff walls under concrete I-walls or T-walls or for temporary earth retaining walls of drainage structures. Although the SELA Project was established in 1996 after severe flooding the year before, hardly any work was done on it until the two catastrophic storms Hurricanes known as Katrina and Rita triggered its revival. These two hurricanes also triggered the HSDRRS soon after the storms’ devastation. The SELA project authorized to improve interior drainage systems while the HSDRRS project was authorized to raise or restore levees and floodwalls mainly along Lake Pontchartrain, the Mississippi River, and Lake Borgne in addition to other areas. Figure 1 shows the SELA Projects that have been completed, are still under construction, or approved for construction. The projects fully highlighted in yellow within the map specified the press-in piling method. These improvements included drainage systems, pump stations, surge walls, and outfall canals as enhanced protection for future storms similar to Hurricane Katrina that caused so much damage by inundating the New Orleans area in August and September 2005 respectively (Facts and Figures, 2012). The completion of these projects were the responsibility of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District.Due to the fact that many of the projects were in densely populated areas, the Army Corps of Engineers specified a non-impact, non-vibratory press-in piling method for driving and extracting sheet piles for many of the projects to mitigate noise and vibration impacts. The soft soil conditions in the New Orleans area was also a contributing factor in the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to specify this piling method due to the risk of settlement for existing historical as well as modern structures. In addition, there were other projects that elected to use the press-in method without any contractual requirements. One of these projects was the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal Reach II Emergency Interim Repair which was part of the HSDRRS project that has been under construction since its authorization in 2005 (Facts and Figures, 2012)."

"Anaconda Mining Inc. is investigating potential improvements and expansions to their operating plant located on the Baie Verte Peninsula in Newfoundland. An extensive batch and continuous bench scale testing program was launched to investigate the efficiency of cyanide destruction under different conditions in order to improve tailings handling. The primary objective of the cyanide destruction study was to apply new technologies to develop a novel cyanide destruction system.Effluent and slurry from Anaconda Mining Inc.’s Point Rousse Project was received at RPC where test work was conducted. Various sodium metabisulfite (MBS) dosages were evaluated and the use of utilizing ozone and ultra violet (UV) light to oxidize cyanide was investigated. All the data was evaluated and mass balances were compiled to develop several flowsheets. Overall encouraging results were found using a combination of ozone and MBS.IntroductionAnaconda Mining Inc.’s Point Rousse project includes an operating gold processing plant located on the Baie Verte Peninsula in Newfoundland which is in the process of improving and expanding. This plant comprises of milling and flotation followed by cyanide leaching in order to extract the gold. The residue from cyanide leaching is filtered by drum filters prior to being clarified for the Merrill-Crowe process. Once the gold has been recovered by the Merrill-Crowe process the effluent is filtered by filter presses and the resulting filtrate as well as the solids from the drum filters are detoxified prior to being pumped to the tailings pond along with the flotation tailings.The entire process is very dependent upon the efficient destruction of cyanide in the effluents and successful tailings handling. Substantial amounts of effluent are delivered to tailings ponds after gold extraction which could create environmental problems if the regulations are not met. Environmental regulations stipulate that final effluents contain no more than 1 mg/L Total CN.The detoxified tailings of the Point Rousse project are produced by the INCO SO2-Air circuit depicted in Figure 1. These detox tailings contain 10 mg/L Total CN at that point of the circuit and this was selected as the target to be matched while reducing overall MBS consumption rates from 3.2 g/L per minute. Prior to detoxification, the filter press tailings contain 520 mg/L Total CN while the drum tailings contain 29 mg/L Total CN."

"In January 2012, AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, commissioned a new autoclave for pressure oxidation of refractory gold concentrate at the Córrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Start-up of the plant occurred in a few weeks and enhanced gold recovery was realized almost immediately, with 94% gold extraction achieved in carbon in leach (CIL), compared to less than 70% without pressure oxidation. This paper describes start-up and commissioning of the plant and provides an overview of plant performance over the last five years.INTRODUCTION In 2008, AngloGold Ashanti purchased the former São Bento property from Eldorado Gold, which, along with AngloGold Ashanti’s existing Córrego do Sítio mine, was renamed AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração (AGA Mineração). Later that year, the Sherritt Technologies division of Sherritt International Corporation (Sherritt) was contacted to begin batch and continuous pilot plant tests to determine the amenability of the AGA Mineração refractory gold concentrates to the pressure oxidation process. Based on the results of the batch and pilot plant tests, AGA Mineração requested basic and detailed engineering studies to be conducted by Sherritt, eventually leading to commissioning of the plant in January 2012. AGA Mineração’s plant is located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, near the city of Belo Horizonte. AGA Mineração`s Phase 1 mine plan covers three sites in the Laranjeiras, Carvoaria Velha and Cachorro Bravo ore bodies, and is designed to process 60,000 tonnes of refractory gold concentrate per year to produce 140,000 ounces of gold per year with an 11 year life of mine (AngloGold Annual Financial Statements, 2010). Recovery of gold at AGA Mineração is based on Sherritt`s pressure oxidation technology for refractory gold concentrates (Berezowsky et al., 1991; Collins et al., 2011a; Collins et al., 2011b). This process had previously been applied to the recovery of gold at the São Bento site (Carvalho et al., 1988; de Silva et al., 1989), in a plant that was operational between 1986 and 2007 (Silva et al., 2004)."

"A pressure non-oxidative leach is employed at Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners to extract nickel from a slow cooled matte. The design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves in parallel to achieve a nickel extraction of 60% at the nameplate capacity of 32.4 ktpa nickel plated. Isothermal modelling of mineralogical and chemical concentration profiles, through a reactive mass balance, permitted rate constant parameter estimation and selection of the most probable reaction pathway. The model was validated with plant data up to a capacity of 26 ktpa Ni plated and suggested by extrapolation that nameplate capacity may be viable through one 80 m3 autoclave.INTRODUCTION Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners is situated on the outskirts of Rustenburg in the North-West province of South-Africa. The refinery produces nickel cathode, copper cathode, cobalt sulphate powder, covellite rich copper pressure leach residue and bulk sodium sulphate through an integrated circuit that refines slow cooled converter matte. The converter matte is milled, non-magnetics are separated as solid nickel copper matte (NCM), and the magnetics are leached yielding a pressure vessel liquor (PVL). The remaining solid platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate after leaching is sent for downstream processing in the Precious Metals Refinery (Hofirek & Kerfoot, 1992). The work presented here is applicable to the base metals refinery which receives the two base metals feed stocks NCM and PVL. In 2009 the capacity of the refinery was upgraded from 21 ktpa nickel cathode plated to 32.4 ktpa. This paper deals with evaluating the capacity of the pressurised non-oxidative nickel leach (NOX) process which accounts for at least 28% of the nickel leached from NCM by design. The NOX design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves divided into four compartments operated in parallel at 155°C and 600kPa(g). Elevated temperature is required to speed up the leach kinetics of particularly nickel and iron which are trapped in slow leaching mineralogical phases namely millerite and bornite, (Dinham, 2006). The stated equivalent capacity for the NOX configuration was 32.9 ktpa nickel plated at first pass nickel and iron leach efficiencies of 60% and above 80% respectively and is a key step for the selective removal of iron (Bryson, Hofirek, Collins, Stiksma, & Bereaowsky, 2008)."

"Installation procedure and the quality of the material used in the construction have significant effects on the behavior of the Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) piles. In this study, Installation and curing of a 760 mm (30 in.) diameter and 12 m (39 ft) long ACIP pile with a design capacity of 1140 kN (128 tons) in hard clay was investigated. Construction quality was monitored using the automated monitoring system where the volume of grout pumped and the pressures were monitored with depth. The curing of the pile was monitored using axial vibrating wire strain gages at four levels and lateral vibrating wire strain gages at two levels. The residual strain and temperature profile in the curing pile was monitored over a period of week to determine the appropriate time for load testing the pile. Axial behavior of Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) Piles in hard clay was studied using full scale load test on an instrumented pile. The load-settlement and load transfer relationships of the pile was investigated based on the load test results. Development of skin friction in the load test pile and the reaction pile was also investigated.INTRODUCTIONAugered cast-in-place piles (ACIP) are drilled foundation installed by drilling a hole with a continuous flight auger to a predetermined depth. Non-displacement Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles are increasingly used for supporting building, bridges, sound barrier walls and many other structures around the world. In an ACIP pile, depending on the soil type and rate of the auger advance, ground stresses are maintained near the value that existed before construction by using a continuous flight auger, which is never withdrawn until the cementitious material (fluid Portland cement grout) is placed by pumping the grout beneath the withdrawing auger under pressure through the hollow stem of the auger (Vipulanandan, 2005). ACIP piles are typically installed with diameters ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 m and lengths up to 30 m (Brown, 2005) although longer lengths have occasionally been installed. Comparing to the drilled shafts and driven piles of equivalent size ACIP piles can be installed more rapidly with fewer disturbances to the surroundings in favorable geological conditions. Hence the installation procedure and the quality of material used in the construction have significant effects on the behavior of ACIP piles (Vipulanandan, et al. 2007). In this paper construction quality control technique for ACIP piles was investigated. Load displacement and load transfer behavior of pile in compression and tension in hard clay was also studied. The development of side resistance in compression and tension for the load test piles and the reaction pile were also investigated."

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). La valeur de la PIV a été mesurée à diverses positions spatiales le long du cyclone. Les résultats de ces calculs ont été validés globalement à l’aide de relevés des pressions et du coefficient d’écoulement d’une extrémité à l’autre de l’hydrocyclone, et localement à des coordonnées spatiales spécifiques en comparant les cartes et les profils du vecteur vitesse PIV."

"The remotely located Cockatoo Island iron ore mine off the Kimberley coast in the northwest of Western Australia has been in operation since 1951. The mine was recently expanded up to about 50 m (165 ft) below sea level using staged construction to create a rockfill seawall around the open cut mining operation. Late in 2013, to allow expansion of subsea iron ore mining operations, Wagstaff Piling was engaged to install a seepage barrier through the rockfill seawall and into the underlying seabed sediments.Earlier stages of seawall construction had used a variety of different construction techniques with varied success, and the history of subsea mining on the island had been plagued with failures, including failures in the slope of the seawall itself, hanging wall failure underneath and inside the seawall, and footwall failures as the ore was mined leaving the rock face inclined at 55 degrees, parallel to the bedding. The current expansion, known as the Stage 4 expansion, was more tightly constrained by the pit geometry and available materials than previous seawall expansions that adopted clay core and sheet pile seepage barrier solutions. In Stage 4, an innovative seepage barrier solution using a grout curtain was selected to provide the necessary cutoff to allow access to highgrade ore, while protecting the mine from inundation by the sea.Seawall ConceptThe open cut subsea mining operation consisted of a 3 km (1.9 mi) long narrow pit along the south side of Cockatoo Island that extended to depths of about 50 m (165 ft) below sea level, and were exposed to the open sea on the south side of the pit. Massive tidal variations of more than 10.5 m (34.5 ft) required a seawall founded on the seabed, extending upwards to RL+13, to safely protect the pit from the high tide level rising to above RL+10."

"During the past several months, I have introduced to civil and structural engineers an innovative solution for the integrity testing of concrete using the Thermal Integrity Profiler (TIP) Wire Cable System by Pile Dynamics. While in the process of “educating” highly-trained professionals about a technological breakthrough, I ended up being educated myself about their needs for quality control/quality assurance (QA/QC). With that in mind, I would like to focus on their two key areas of concern:• How complex is the TIP installation process?• How does the QA/QC engineereffectively analyze and report TIP test results?A few months ago, during a discussion with a senior QA engineer, he asked a question that stopped me in my tracks: “Why should we do foundation testing at all?” Turning it around, I asked, “Why wouldn’t QA/QC personnel want to know everything they could about their critical infrastructure foundation?” Honestly, I didn’t answer his question nor did I fully comprehend what he was trying to say. With his experience, the engineer understood that there has not been an integrity test or a combination of integrity tests that could deliver an inside the cage and outside the cage (cover) complete data set that would provide a definitive profile of the entire shaft. Crosshole sonic logging (CSL) becomes more effective the larger the diameter of the shaft becomes, with a maximum effectiveness between 70% and 80%, but does not provide any data of the integrity of the shaft beyond a straight line between CSL tubes. Gamma-gamma logging (GGL) provides qualitative information about the concrete surrounding the GGL tube and device, and it provides information about a small percentage of the drilled shaft concrete near its outside edge."

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE)–, Duplicate Sampling Analysis (DSA) and Segregation Free Analysis (SFA)–, are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody was calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to the power of 3. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for is shown to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry-preferred 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold-bearing ores the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the FSE greatly simplifies the characterization of gold ores, now requiring only the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications of the simplified equation for the heterogeneity test are that, provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. Uniaxial compressive strength of coal is used in designing pillar dimensions in room and pillar mining. Coals always contain bedding planes and cleats; they are also brittle and fragile. Therefore, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason, a method for the estimation of coal strength from easy tests would be useful.The needle penetration test is a nondestructive index test that is applicable both in the field and the laboratory and does not require any special sample preparation. The PyEarth™ process developed at Mintek has been demonstrated successfully at pilot scale. Nine tons of ore containing 2.3 mass % of total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a dormant mineralogically complex iron-rich ore deposit, was subjected to a concentrating smelting step in a 200 kW DC open-arc pilot furnace and the rare earths from the resulting slag were extracted via a hydrometallurgical route. This ore deposit is practically not amenable to extraction by conventional methods. The testwork results proved that the PyEarth™ process was able to optimize the extraction of rare earths while minimizing waste through the removal of iron as a saleable iron alloy. Reduction of iron to the alloy in the smelting step was found flexible, efficient, and controllable, while rare earths were left virtually unreduced in the slag phase. The slag chemistry is selected to optimize both the smelting and leaching performances as well as the alloy composition. Leaching of the resulting slag was found possible and most efficient in hydrochloric acid amongst other lixiviants tested.

"Energy piles are a new innovative renewable energy technology to access and exploit the relative constant temperature of the ground for efficient heating and cooling of buildings. Examples of energy piles include drilled shafts, continuous flight auger (CFA) piles, driven piles, and micropiles. A field test setup was installed at the Virginia Tech Geotechnical Research Facility to study energy piles. The field test consists of a total of five micropiles 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter, four of which were equipped with circulation loops. The test piles extend to a depth of 30.5 meters (100 feet) and are heavily instrumented with strain gauges and temperature sensors. Several observation boreholes were formed around the test piles to monitor ground temperatures. Thermal conductivity tests and field load testing were performed to investigate the behavior of Energy Piles. This paper presents results of the thermal conductivity tests and thermo-mechanical field load test performed as part of this field investigation.IntroductionThere is a developing trend around the world to explore alternative energy sources. The main driving forces are growing global energy demand, depleting natural resources and the adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel consumption. Geothermal energy is one of the promising renewable sources that can be utilized to offset such trends. However the use of geothermal energy has been limited mainly to certain hot spot areas where it is used either for district heating and/or electricity generation. Ground temperatures below a depth of about 6 meters (20 feet) remain stable compared to outside air temperatures, typically lying between 8-23°C (46-73°F) at most U.S. regions. The constant temperature and heat storage capacity of near surface soils in any region represent a tremendous potential of stored energy that can be used for heating and cooling of structures."

"Shake-flask oxidation tests were performed on Red Dog mine waste to study the initial dissolution behaviours of lead, zinc, and iron. The conditions for accelerated acid generation in terms of Eh and pH were determined. Each mineral behaved distinctly, with galena dissolving first, followed by sphalerite, then pyrite, although there was some overlap in behaviour. Iron was not detected in solution until approximately day 40 and was present at low concentrations. The experimental conditions and the theoretical model results indicated the formation of iron oxyhydroxides at low weathering times and jarosite at longer times.RÉSUMÉ Des tests d’oxydation par agitation en flacon ont été effectués sur les déchets miniers de l’exploitation Red Dog afin d’étudier les comportements initiaux de dissolution du plomb, du zinc et du fer. Les conditions entraînant la production accélérée d’acide en termes d’eH (potentiel d’oxydoréduction) et de pH (potentiel d’hydrogène) ont été déterminées. Chaque minerai se comportait différemment ; la galène a été la première à se dissoudre, suivie de la sphalérite, puis de la pyrite, mais un certain chevauchement des comportements a été observé. La présence de fer en solution n’a été détectée qu’après environ 40 jours et ce, à de faibles concentrations. Les conditions expérimentales et les résultats du modèle théorique signalaient la formation d’oxyde-hydroxyde de fer sur de courtes périodes d’altération atmosphérique, et de jarosite sur des périodes plus longues."

"The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into the kinetics of chalcocite leaching in an acidic ferric sulfate media. Chalcocite leaching in acidic media is known to occur in two sequential stages, with the first stage being much faster than the second. The leaching residue from the first stage is typically assumed to be a covellite type of material. This study hypothesized that the mineralogy after the first-stage leaching varies in response to different leaching conditions. We investigated the dependency of the mineralogy of the first-stage leaching residue on temperature and initial ferric concentration. The experimental results showed that chalcocite leaching behavior altered upon temperature and initial ferric concentration. A proposed combined reaction model was found to be able to describe the experimental data. The first stage was described very well by the shrinking core diffusion model while the second stage was described very well by the shrinking core chemical reaction model. "Numerical modeling has been used extensively to assess the stability of surface and underground mines. Tabular, steeply dipping ore bodies are generally mined out by open stoping methods with delayed backfill. Cemented rockfill (CRF) is employed as a backfill material for narrow vein deposits with low production rates. Sublevel stoping methods with delayed backfill are employed to mine out steeply dipping ore bodies. Backfill is exposed to blast-induced vibrations and dynamic loading due to loss of confinement, which could lead to backfill failures. Backfill failures could influence the operating cost of a mining stope and the productivity of the entire mining project. This work shows a detailed overview of the factors contributing to backfill failure. A detailed literature review is presented along with case studies of longhole stoping operations from the Canadian Shield region for this work. The backfilled stopes are analyzed with the finite difference code FLAC3D. The literature review shows that the factors primarily responsible for fill failure are the strength of backfill, stope geometry, mining sequence, and blast-induced vibrations. INTRODUCTION Sublevel stoping methods with delayed backfill are popular in Canadian hardrock and metal mines. Backfill facilitates ground control and greater recovery of ore with pillar mining. It reduces wall slough, thus decreasing ore dilution from adjacent walls. The production of cemented rockfill (CRF) is simple; rock aggregates are mixed together with cement slurry and then placed in a mined-out stope. CRF has a low water content, thus it requires no additional drainage unlike some other backfill. Low water-to-cement ratio enables faster curing rate, hence a faster mining cycle can be achieved (Annor, 1999; Hassani and Archibald, 1998; McKay and Duke, 1989). CRF is generally placed in stopes from the upper sill drift using a truck or a load haul dump machine. Some of the problems associated with CRF are the moderate to high operational cost, the difficulty to get a tight filling, and segregation. Backfill failure is a product of many factors, such as cementation, particle size distribution, placement method employed, water quality, segregation, and blast-induced vibrations. The problem of segregation in aggregates has been observed when aggregate is dumped from a backfill raise (Meech, 2012; Indiana DOT, 2013). Segregation becomes unavoidable when the aggregates are not properly sized (Yu and Counter, 1983; Stone, 2007; Yu, 1989). The exposed backfill zones will contribute to ore dilution due to backfill when subjected to dynamic loading due to fill failures. This paper presents a detailed literature review and numerical modeling results of a mine backfill, along with case studies from longhole stoping operations. The backfilled stopes are analyzed with the finite difference code FLAC3D (Itasca, 2017). "Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The majority of this foam dust control research has focused on dust control efficiency at the longwall shearer or continuous miner cutting drum."

"Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."
