Based on commodity price increase of 300% between 2002 to 2013 [1] and increased cost ofcapital projects and operation, equipment failure, which in some cases causes complete shutdown of the operation, becomes a vital importance in mining and metallurgical plants. The following sections present a number of examples from many failure cases experienced by the author during his three decades of work as a materials engineer in the mining industry."

"Dust control is an increasingly important consideration for all mining operations from a health, safety, environmental and maintenance perspective. Modern mining operations incorporate a variety of mechanical dust control techniques into design however in many cases these engineered systems are unable to meet desired fugitive dust level targets. In these cases a variety of chemical dust suppression options are available to operators to assist in meeting their targets. This paper provides an overview of available chemistries, discussion of application techniques and equipment requirements and available performance monitoring technologies. This paper will also include a number of case histories discussing the treatment approach chosen, challenges encountered, chemical feed, storage and application equipment, monitoring techniques employed and results achieved.INTRODUCTIONDust FundamentalsFugitive dust by definition is an aerosol consisting of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Aerosols can include suspensions of particulate (solids) or sprays (liquids) or a mixture of both. Of particular concern from an occupational health and safety perspective are aerosols of particulate matter due to their involvement in classical occupations lung diseases such as silicosis, poisoning through chronic exposure to compounds such as lead and beryllium and expected involvement in more modern identified conditions such as cancer, asthma, and a host of other respiratory and non-respiratory conditions which may be caused or influenced through exposure to dust.According to the ""Glossary of Atmospheric Chemistry Terms"" (IUPAC, 1990), ""Dust: Small, dry, solid particles projected into the air by natural forces, such as wind, volcanic eruption, and by mechanical or man-made processes such as crushing, grinding, milling, drilling, demolition, shoveling, conveying, screening, bagging, and sweeping. Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter, and they settle slowly under the influence of gravity."" It should be noted that the behavior of particulates with respect to settling rate in air is a function of particle mass and shape and therefore the geometric size of the particle can be misleading. Occupational hygienists utilize the concept of particle aerodynamic diameter as a more representative reflection of particle size. Particle aerodynamic diameter, is defined as ""the diameter of a hypothetical sphere of density 1 g/cm3 having the same terminal settling velocity in calm air as the particle in question, regardless of its geometric size, shape and true density."" The expression of particle size as aerodynamic diameter allows for a more consistent understanding of particle behavior both from a settling perspective as well as from the perspective of how dust particles will behave in the respiratory tract. Figure 1 illustrates settling rates for particles of various aerodynamic diameters. The relationship between particle size and settling rate is important for understanding what size of particles must be addressed by dust control strategies as well as what particle sizes represent the most danger from an exposure and occupational health perspective."

Large-scale hydraulic fracturing technique has been widely applied to the development of shale gas reservoirs, where the interaction between natural fractures and critical fracture zones has substantial impact on the propagation of hydraulic fractures. Therefore, it is of significant importance to understand and experimentally verify such mechanism. To reach this end, tri-axial fracturing tests were implemented on 400mm×400mm×400mm block samples collected from Longmaxi shale outcrops. The interplay between hydraulic and natural fractures was investigated during the tests, factoring in the role of pump rate in affecting the created fracture network. Based on the experimental results, the critical fracture zone, defined as the weak formation zone nearby the wellbore created by staged pressure implementation that is observed rapid fracture propagation upon next stage of pressure increase, was thoroughly investigated. The analysis illustrates that given the high brittleness of the shale formation, abundant critical fracture zones are generated around natural fractures with pressure building up at a relatively low pump rate. As the pump rate increases, hydraulic fractures initiate and come into play with critical fracture zones, implying emergence of a large number of micro-cracks. A changing pump rate modifies the way of interaction between hydraulic and natural fractures and the subsequent formation of fracture network. Long term fracturing fluid injection with relatively low pump rate below the activation of critical zones is suggested. Also proposed is appropriate timing when applying a specific pump rate that will contribute to the improvement of hydraulic fracture propagation.

Many non-commercial operators are currently faced with the need to operate fleets of legacy gas turbine engines. How long such engines can be kept in service safely, without replacing a significant portion of their aging structural components, has become a growing concern to engine life-cycle managers, due to uncertainties in the remaining lives of critical components of these engines. This paper describes the application of the damage tolerance methodology to predict safe inspection intervals (SII) for critical components of gas turbine engines, using components of a turboprop engine for a transport aircraft as examples. High temperature components of this engine are made of advanced aerospace alloys. The methods of predicting three-dimensional fatigue crack growth at the critical location of turbine discs and spacers using both commercial and in-house developed algorithms are presented. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of variations in material parameters on the predicted safe inspection intervals. In addition, spin rig tests performed for both turbine discs and spacers are described. Finally, crack growth rates predicted by numerical analyses are compared to those obtained from spin rig testing and the damage tolerance of the turbine components is assessed.

"The US Army Corps of Engineers selected the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the required stabilization at the LPV 111 Project (New Orleans, USA). DMM was used for ground improvement/foundation strengthening and consequently to stabilize and support the burden of the new levee. Two different technologies were used: Trevi Turbo Mix (TTM) and Contrivance Innovation Cement Mixing Columns (CI-CMC). LPV 111 is the largest soil mixing project to date in the USA with its more than 18,000 elements installed to a depth of up to 67 feet for a total of 1.7 million cubic yards of treated soil. The preparation and execution of the project presented many challenges from various points of view. The little time available to complete the job led to the simultaneous utilization of eight deep mixing rigs and batch plants which worked 24 hours per day, 5.5 days per week on a stretch of land approximately 5.3 miles long. Given the imposing geographical extent of the project, a four phase laboratory programme and five field validation test programmes, conducted in as many different areas of the project, were completed to design and optimize the grout mixes and the installation parameters. The massive quality control/quality assurance testing programme produced over 500 drilled core holes and over 5,000 tested specimens in order to determine unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and uniformity of the DMM elements. This paper has the purposes of describing the tremendous challenges encountered and providing valuableinformation that may be useful for other future projects, including details not previously published.INTRODUCTIONReach LPV-111 is part of the Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System designed to protect the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas from the surge that would accompany a 100 year hurricane event. LPV-111 measures approximately 8.5 km (5.3 miles) long, of which 7.2 (4.5 miles) extend along the north bank of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) and the remaining 1.3 (0.8 miles) run north and terminates at the CSX Railroad Gate. The Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge borders the levee on both sides (Fig. 1)."

"A comprehensive geotechnical characterization has been undertaken at the El Teniente mine to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour strength properties of the primary copper ore. The Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modelling approach is used to simulate the mechanical behaviour of this heavily and unfractured rock mass. The micro-parameters of the model have been calibrated against mechanical properties and scaling laws for intact rock and veins, in order to represent virtual samples of four different geotechnical units. Results can be used to predict the rock mass scale effects, anisotropy, and brittleness properties that cannot be obtained using empirical methods.INTRODUCTIONThe primary copper ore at the El Teniente mine is described as very competent and massive, given that it exhibits a brittle behaviour (Rojas, Cavieres, Dunlop, & Gaete, 2000). This description is coherent with the geological description of the rock mass, which does not have discontinuities match as the definition provided by International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM, 1981). Only faults can be classified as discontinuities, but they are widely spaced. The primary copper ore has a high frequency of veins, where the cooper mineralization is hosted, these vein network structures are known as stockwork. Soft veins containing weak minerals as infill (chalcopyrite and anhydrite) control the disassembling of the rock mass during caving (Brzovic & Villaescusa, 2007).Presently, there are mainly two traditional methods used to estimate the strength of the rock mass: 1) determination of the strength envelope of the rock mass using scaling parameters from laboratory tests and 2) using numerical modelling based on back analysis of previous experiences of failure observed and measured in mining or civil excavations. The primary copper ore of El Teniente mine has no fractures; therefore, it is difficult to determine a rating that would enable to scale laboratory data, such as, RMR (Laubscher, 1977) or GSI (Hoek, 1994). This is the reason why the first option is not valid unless the entry data is manipulated or adjusted in order to obtain reasonable results. The second option requires, in general, a good characterization of a previous failure event in the rock mass, which is not always available. In recent years, new techniques of numerical modeling have been developed (PFC3D, ELFEN, Abaqus). Those methodologies are the third way to estimate the strength of the rock mass, but they are still in development. Particularly, the concept of SRM developed by Itasca is implemented in this study (Pierce, Mas Ivars, Cundall, & Potyondy, 2007; Mas Ivars et al., 2011), aiming to capture the real behaviour of the rock mass."

(Excerpts, pp 157-160) The usual means of firing blasting charges, especially in tunnels and adits in the Western States, is by the use of a safety fuse. The term safety fuse originated from the fact that when properly used under working conditions this fuse burns at a uniform rate and does not flash or explode, as was often the case with the means employed for igniting blasting charges previous to its invention; but the term is somewhat misleading, because the fuse is not, nor has it ever seriously been claimed to be, safe for use in gaseous coal mines. The fuse used for tunnel work is composed of a core of gunpowder surrounded by various layers of waterproofing material.

Debris data from the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board’s Project ESKIMORE full-scale explosives event test program are compared to quantity-distance (Q/D) standards and quantitative risk analysis (QRA) methods. The ESKIMORE test program involved quantities of explosives ranging from 1,000 to 60,000 pounds detonated in typically sized structures made of metal and concrete. Debris from these events was extensively surveyed and catalogued. The debris patterns from these events show varying degrees of directionality normal to the walls of the structures. These density patterns are overlaid an existing explosives storage site that is comparable to the test conditions. Analysis of the debris patterns in relation to Q/D standards shows that exposures located beyond the Q/D arc but along the normal to walls of potential explosion sites (PES) may have much higher debris density than exposures at the same distance on the corners of the same PES. Analysis of the debris patterns shows that predicted patterns using the QRA tool IMESAFR v2.0 closely match actual patterns. Additionally, IMESAFR based QRA methods are able to quantify the different risk levels of being exposed along the wall’s normal as compared to being exposed on the structure’s corner. "Cutter Soil Mixing, also known as CSM, was developed in Europe as an alternate method of Deep Mixing to the more traditional single and multiple auger techniques, and brought to market by Bauer Maschinen GmbH (Bauer), towards the end of 2003. Initial development of the technique had been completed in a joint venture between Bauer and Bachy Soletanche. In 2004 the concept was introduced to the North American market. Continued development of the method and demonstration of its versatility, both in terms of applications and applicable soil types has seen a steady growth in the number of designs incorporating the approach, and contractors offering the technique. This paper provides a brief overview of the variety and size of projects and applications where the method has been adopted, discusses some lessons learned with respect to equipment operation as well as the improvements that have been introduced to the equipment, and briefly reviews the current state of practice, as well as some of the associated on-going research and development.BACKGROUNDCutter Soil Mixing (CSM) is a technique for deep soil mixing that was initially developed as a collaborative effort between Bauer Maschinen (Bauer) and Bachy Soletanche, but which ultimately resulted in the separate development of two somewhat different brands of CSM tool. The Bauer brand of CSM entered the European market in 2004, and was first promoted in the North American market in late 2004, with the first project starting in 2005. The Bachy Soletanche brand, sometimes referred to as “Geomix” was first marketed in Europe in 2005 and the first model introduced in North America in 2007.The development of the Cutter Soil Mixing technique utilized the experiences gained from Trench Cutter/Hydrofraise equipment, developing a technique that incorporates two cutting wheels rotating about a horizontal axis as opposed to the more conventional deep soil mixing approach which utilizes augers and mixing paddles rotating about vertical axes. Whereas the Trench Cutter/Hydrofraise technique excavates the soil from within a panel, and supports the open hole using a bentonite slurry, the CSM technique cuts and displaces the soil whilst pumping a slurry/grout directly into the soil through a port located between the wheels. The combination of cutting the soil while introducing an appropriate volume of slurry effectively fluidizes the column of soil around and above the cutter head. While this process achieves a high degree of mixing, even on the downward cutting stroke, thorough in-situ mixing typically occurs on the withdrawal stroke, when most of the slurry is added."

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. "The installation of Bored Piles and Diaphragm Wall under slurry using tremie raises quality concerns on the integrity of concrete. It is vital to understand the effects on concrete integrity during concrete pouring process. This paper intends to unveil to what extent the compressive strength of the concrete pour is affected in contact with drilling fluid still. Another important angle of analysis proves whether the inclusion of solids particles of un-hydrated fluid could have impact on the concrete compressive strength. The testing comparing the response of concrete compressive strength when drilling fluid is included into the concrete mix altering the water/cement ratio by 5%, 20% and 30%. Comparative results are analysed between two different hydrated slurries namely sodium activated Bentonite and 3rd generation synthetic polymer.1. INTRODUCTIONSoil stabilization is the base for a successful deep foundation execution. The G3 System Slurry developed by Ground Engineering Operations (GEO), with its third generation polymer, namely PolyMud®, is an innovative and unique alternative to the mineral based slurries for soil stabilization, enhancing the quality and integrity of the underground foundation structures. It optimises the production rate of work progress and cost as well. At the same time, PolyMud® slurry is proven to be environmentally friendly.Guaranteeing the maximum quality of the foundation elements according to the initial design is one of the most important objectives and a concern for the foundations contractors. In order to fulfil the project expectations in this aspect, any incident that could compromise the designed concrete integrity and capacity must be avoided.GEO, has carry out its own research regarding effects on the concrete compression results if drilling fluid intermixes with fresh concrete while pouring. To shed light in this regard, GEO, in collaboration with CML (Concrete Materials Laboratory) Sdn. "The spontaneous combustion of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is one of the seriously threat encountered in coal mining and storage. The dynamic accumulation of internal heat in coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) provides continuous heat-source for coal spontaneous combustion. Combined with the features and characteristics of coal pile storage, a technology of heat pipe(HP) is applied to enhance heat transfer. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal storage piles (hillock) due to regeneration, a method using heat pipes to destroy the heat preservation conditions of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is proposed, which reduces the risk of coal spontaneous combustion and prevents coal fire. A theoretical model of Coal-Thermosyphon has set up to analysis the radius of cooling effect area quantitatively. An experimental equipment of the heat transferring in a set of heat pipe, which used to study the influence on coal pile temperature distribution, has been designed. Results show, the heat pipe has a significant effect on inhibiting the coal spontaneous combustion process by destroy the heat preservation conditions of the coal. Under the experimental conditions, the most obvious coal temperature decline appears at radius 20.0mm around the pipe, dropped from 45.8? to 32.5?, a decline of 29%; the coal pile temperature at radius 420mm from 12.9? to 12.4?, a decline of 3.87%. And the research offers an effective and new approach in its application and promotion for preventing and controlling in coal spontaneous combustion.INTRODUCTION China is one of a few countries which utilize coal as the major source of energy in the world, and is the one whose characteristic of energy structure is rich coal, deficient oil and lean gas. Relatively speaking, China is abundance in mineral resources. The coal, which is the fundamental resource in the process of industrialization, is the main energy in china. Thus China cannot alter the situation of coal consumption dominated a leading role in its energy structure in near term.A massive of coal gangue would be produced every year in China with the mining activities. And it’s estimated that almost 360 million tons gangue were dumped in 2003, accounting for 10 percent of the whole coal production. Huge numbers of coal waste piles have more than 2,600 seats, which cover an area of over 12,000 hectares. Worse more, the coal gangue still has an annual growth rate of 100 million tons. Toxic smokes and greenhouse gases are discharged directly and prolongly into the atmosphere due to coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Even worse, waste dump explosion cause massive losses and are able to endanger the safety of workers. For example, one waste dump of the NO.4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Group Co., Ltd. occurred twice of explosions in 2005, and about 3.13 million tons of waste rocks were thrown within the range from 100 to 300 meters, eight people were killed and 122 rescuers and miners were burned, and economic losses were estimated more than 3,000 million."

The problems of global environment and resources have become important issues in recent years, and the iron and steelmaking industry is requested to decrease energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission. The improvement of efficiency of ironmaking system is one of the countermeasures for these problems because more than a half of total energy input to the integrated steelwork is input to the ironmaking system. Various approaches to improve the blast furnace process have been made. The authors examined their performances through mathematical simulations of blast furnace operation, and confirmed the improvement of blast furnace efficiency under some operating conditions. The ironmaking system consists of various processes, and the materials and the energy are transported among these processes. Thus it is necessary to evaluate the efficiency of the novel operation of blast furnace based on the ironmaking system. In this study, the balances of material and energy on ironmaking system that consists of blast furnace, coke oven, sintering and hot stove processes were analyzed. The operation status of each process in the system was adjusted according to the results of the operation simulation of the blast furnace under novel operating conditions. The analysis clarified the effect of the blast furnace operation on the energy balance and CO2 emission of the ironmaking system.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

"In the course of the extension of the railway network in Israel, currently the two 4.6 km long tubes of the Gilon Tunnels on the line from Akko to Carmiel are being constructed. The tunnels run through the limestones of the Bina- and Yirka-formations, which locally are karstified. The maximum overburden amounts to 160 m.The limestones are mostly horizontally bedded and vertically jointed. Occasionally also inclined joints exist. The tunnels cross various fault zones, which mostly strike at an acute angle to the tunnel axis and are steeply inclined. The karstic cavities which were encountered during tunneling have partially been filled by clay. In the vicinity of the fault zones, the rock has often been strongly jointed and weathered respectively. The two single-track tubes have a cross section with vertical walls and an open invert. The tubes are connected by cross cuts with a spacing of approx. 250 m.During the tender phase, WBI has elaborated the tender design for a joint venture of a Chinese and an Israeli construction company. After the joint venture had been awarded the contract, the preliminary and the detailed design have been elaborated by WBI and the construction works have been guided. On the basis of the geological description, rock mechanical models have been elaborated, followed by stability analyses on the basis of the Finite Element method. The tunnels have been excavated according to the shotcrete method. The support in most areas only consisted of a very thin shotcrete lining and radial bolts in the area of the roof. Depending on the degree of jointing and weathering, locally advancing support by means of spiles has been applied.The internal lining of reinforced concrete has been constructed in parallel to the heading of the tubes. Mucking and delivery of materials was carried out through the cross cuts.The breakthrough was achieved in April 2014 and thus within schedule. The predicted distribution of the excavation and support classes along the tunnel has been in good agreement with reality."

"The University of New South Wales (UNSW Australia) had been involved in the study of premature failure of rock bolts in Australian coal mines from the initial identification of the problem in 1999 (Crosky et al 2002). Rock bolt steel changes over the last decade appear to have not reduced the incidence of failures. A broadened UNSW research project funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry has targeted finding the environmental causes through extensive field and laboratory experiments. This paper describes the field studies conducted in underground coal mines, in particular attempts to measure the contribution to corrosion from groundwater, mineralogy and microbial activity. Various underground survey techniques were used to determine the extent of broken bolts, with the presence of both stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and localized deep pitting making no single technique suitable on their own. Groundwater found dripping from bolts across various coalfields in Australia were found to be not aggressive and known groundwater corrosivity classification systems did not correlate to where broken bolts were found. In-hole coupon bolts placed in roof strata containing claystone bands confirmed the clay as being a major contributor to corrosion. Microbes capable of contributing to steel corrosion were found to be present in groundwater, and culturing of the microbes taken from in-situ coupon bolts proved that the bacteria was present on the bolt surface. An ‘in-hole bolt corrosion coupon’ development by the project may have multiple benefits of 1) helping quantify newly developed corrosivity classification systems, 2) providing an in-situ ground support corrosion monitoring tool, and 3) for testing possible corrosion protection solutions.introductionThe problem of premature rock bolt failure in Australian coal mines was published in 2002 and 2004 by UNSW Australia from Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects. In the final report of 2004, anecdotal evidence from one coal mine indicated that the problem may be eliminated in some environments by a change to steel grades with higher Charpy impact values of ~16. "Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. With the increased use of mechanized rock excavation, there have been developed internationally a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or rate of wear flat development on specified test pieces. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness and is determined as the abrasion of a steel pin after scratching over the freshly-broken or saw-cut surface of a rock. Two types of testing devices are in use today: (i) the original ‘Cerchar apparatus’, and (ii) the ‘West apparatus’, which was adopted herein. The CAI is calculated from the measured diameter of the resulting wear flat on the steel pin after 10mm scratching. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in natureis anisotropic. Phyllite is an anisotropic and foliated metamorphic rock and various types of phyllite specimens were tested in this research. Although phyllite is a type of rock primarily composed of quartz and the expected CAI value can be high, mechanical cutting of this rock should not be very problematic compared with igneous rocks have same CAI value. As phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock, most of the specimens split into sheets through the quartz seam by the tip during scratching normal to the axis of quartz seams. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test and F-Schimazek index values for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research.
