Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. In terms of underground tunnelling in metres advance per capita, Australasia compares well with the best world performers. This is because of the large number of metalliferous mines, coalmines and civil tunnelling projects, with the Australian tunnel advance for civil and mining projects exceeding 625?km/a. In terms of hard rock quarry extraction, Australia produces approximately 200?Mt/a of aggregates, roadbase, fill material and specialist rock products from its quarries, which equates to approximately 8?t/capita. Australian mining and tunnelling contractors are also of world standard and are used to excavating in a variable range of ground conditions in a competitive environment. One author has been involved in tunnel and underground space planning and quarrying in Australia for the past 25 years and predicts that, over the next 20 years, there will be a major swing towards underground space for commercial uses. This paper identifies the potential uses of underground commercial excavation and the planning and geotechnical challenges for the future. Underground quarrying creates new opportunities to extend existing quarries within their urban footprint with minimum impact on the surrounding community. Investigations by the authors reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. However, cities such as Helsinki have been planned in detail to utilise the rock resources beneath them. Improving the understanding of the processes governing ground movements in and around brown coal open cuts is of significant interest for both operating stability and rehabilitation. Brown coal, lignite, is a low-rank coal that is best described as a soft rock, with geotechnical characteristics that derive from its organic origin. It is well-known that low-rank coals exhibit creep behaviour; however, little has been reported on the impacts of chemical processes on brown coal creep behaviour even though organic substances are susceptible to chemical alterations and mining processes will contribute to changes to the geochemical environment; around most mines, groundwater flow patterns are altered leading to enhanced surface water infiltration. Here we study the deformation behaviour of brown coal in response to ion exchange reaction. Our experimental results show that for different ion exchange conditions different characteristics of secondary compression are observed. With the addition of Ca2+, the ratio between coefficients of secondary and primary compression (Ca /Cc) initially decreased, presenting a minimum value at the concentration of 0.005?M, then increased significantly. This implies the importance of ion exchange process for the long-term deformation of brown coal. On the other hand, increasing Na+ concentration did not affect Ca /Cc values significantly over all tested concentrations. The suppression of diffuse double layer was still observed for Na+-treated samples as increasing Na+ concentration decreases Ca values. Rock burst is common in deep underground excavations and is characterised by a violent ejection of block rocks from excavation walls. It is critical to understand the phenomenon of rock burst and particularly the failure mechanism. Laboratory experiments are one of the ways. For that purpose, a rock burst laboratory test system was developed at the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing. A true triaxial test system, designated the Deep Underground Rock Burst Analogue Test Machine, was developed, which can transfer a stress state from three-direction-compression on six surfaces to the compression on five surfaces with one set free. The rock burst experimental system comprises an acquisition of acoustic emission signals, a high-speed recording in order to accurately record the kinetic characteristics of rock fragments ejected during a rock burst event and the possibility of infrared thermography showing the surface temperature of the samples. In this paper, analyses of typical results from rock burst tests are presented with a description of the obtained results. The mechanisms of rock burst are illustrated, and a rock burst classification is proposed based on these laboratory tests. For the control of rock burst, the constant resistance, large deformation (CRLD) bolt or anchor is presented for accommodating the large displacement of surrounding rock masses and absorbing the impact of the sudden release of rock burst while outputting a constant resistant force in response to the external load. The CRLD bolt or anchor has had practical applications in underground mines. Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. Although rock strength anisotropy is a well-known phenomenon in rock mechanics, its impact on geotechnical design is often ignored. No widely accepted guideline currently exists for its characterisation. Anisotropy can significantly control the failure mechanism and progression of damage into the rock mass, particularly in high-stress conditions. As such, it can play a key role in the stability of underground excavations and subsequent geotechnical design.This paper introduces the concept of anisotropy at both intact and rock mass scales. It then presents guidelines for measuring anisotropy and assigning rock mass strength properties. An improved unified constitutive model (IUCM), which can account for more complex failure mechanisms, is then briefly described. This IUCM is used to better understand the typical responses of anisotropic rocks to underground mining and to develop an improved damage classification scheme for these conditions.The application of conventional design methods in anisotropic conditions is shown to lead to significant errors. Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014). The LaModel program was initially developed in 1993, and it is used to model the stresses and displacements in thin tabular deposits such as coal seams. It uses the displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method with a simplified laminated overburden model and because of this formulation, it is able to quickly and effectively analyse large areas of single- or multiple-seam mines. Over the last couple of decades, LaModel has been used by many mine engineers and researchers for improving pillar designs and mine safety, and it has been continually updated to add functionality and improve its ease of use and accuracy. The present LaModel can calculate seam displacements and overburden, multiple-seam and total seam stresses, pillar safety factors, energy values, roof-bending stresses, fault effects and surface subsidence. It can automatically generate the mine and overburden grids from AutoCAD drawings, and it includes wizards for automatically generating Bieniawski strength coal pillars, easily calibrating the overburden properties to observed abutment stresses and calibrating the gob material to expected gob loading. An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. "Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. El presente texto señala conceptos básicos sobre la activación y depresión de sulfuros de plomo y hierro, la nueva aplicación del criterio Flash y el uso de la plantilla de diseño experimental para establecer si un nuevo depresor orgánico puede ser la alternativa de reemplazo del depresor cianuro de sodio en flotación. Para el estudio se realizó un diseño factorial fraccionado para estudiar cuatro variables. La plantilla permitió evaluar sulfato de zinc, cianuro de sodio, grado de molienda y un nuevo depresor orgánico donde se encontró que el reactivo RA-CN300 es un depresor de sulfuros que reduciría el consumo de cianuro de sodio y contenido de cianuro en total en el agua de la relavera.

En las operaciones greenfield de roca dura, la tecnología de los rodillos de molienda de presión es la tecnología más empleada en la etapa de chancado terciario para preparar la alimentación del molino de bola. Sin embargo, los HPGR puede emplearse para actualizar y optimizar instalaciones de roca dura ya existentes. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la implementación de HPGR en las plantas de molienda SAG (Cadia Hill, Australia), así como en las de molienda convencional de tres etapas (Freeport Grasberg, Indonesia) para aumentar la capacidad, recuperación, y reducir el costo de operaciones.

Como parte del proceso de puesta en marcha, se desarrolló la subetapa de este comisionamiento de los IsaMills, fundamentales en el circuito de remolienda. El circuito de remolienda consiste en dos IsaMills, uno para el concentrado rougher y otro para el concentrado scavenger. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe las ventajas encontradas en este equipo como el nivel de carga de medio de molienda, que es reflejado en el consumo de energía.

En ese sentido, los cambios más importantes son: Base de datos digital, uso de un programa GMP para procesar e interpretar datos de ensayos, determinación de ensayos en mayor volumen y a menor costo y mayor inspección de la productividad
