The influence of varying amounts of magnesia, silica, and alumina in iron ore sinter on its mineralogy, reducibility index (RI), reduction disintegration index (RDI), physical breakdown (AI and TI), and production properties (coke breeze rate) were examined. It was found that the mineralogy of iron sinter can more easily be predicted from its chemical composition than from the RI, RDI, AI or TI. Anticipating the consequence that varying amounts of MgO and SiO2would have on sinter properties is complex, and not necessarily predictable. High concentrations of Al2O3in the sinter result in high concentrations of the SFCA phase, but with drastically deteriorated properties. This study also confirmed that the form in which fluxes are added to the raw material sinter mixture affects the mineralogy and properties of the produced sinter.

Nickel-base single-crystal superalloys are used for gas turbine airfoil applications due to their excellent high temperature properties. A good understanding of the mechanical response of these alloys under different temperature and loading conditions is essential for modeling their behavior. In this study, the low cycle fatigue behavior of CMSX 2 oriented with the loading axis along [001] was investigated under zero-compression strain-controlled loading at 1100°C. The experiments were performed with or without a two-minute dwell (hold) in compression. The microstructure before and after testing was analyzed to understand the deformation characteristics including the effect of dwell.

Given that piles are composed of different materials and installed using a variety of methods, ASTM D 1143/D 1143M-07 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial Compression is justifiably general so that it has as many applications as reasonably possible. There are aspects of the test setup, the test procedures, and data interpretation for instrumented piles (some of which are specific to augered cast-in-place piles) that are either not discussed in detail in this ASTM standard or are not addressed at all. Specifically, the use of variable time hold times can obscure the shape of the conventional load-deflection curve, as well as, influence the interpretation of the ultimate pile capacity. Unload-reload cycles induce additional non-uniform internal axial loads within the pile which complicate interpretation of the strain gage data and increase the potential for errors. Attempts to maintain a constant top load during the hold period can lead to operational difficulties in taking measurements and are technically unnecessary. Residual load has been shown to develop in cast-in-place piles and can significantly influence the axial load distribution as interpreted from strain gage data. The stiffness of cast-in-place piles has been observed to vary with the measured strain, and a constant modulus, as provided by correlation with the unconfined compressive strength of the grout, may lead to a significantly different interpretation of the axial load distribution.

A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

A well-defined geometric model for a mineral system and its liberation by size reduction is used to show the relationship between true volumetric particle composition and the composition estimates obtained by the measurement of linear intercepts or areas of simulated polished sections of particles. Based on this information, a transformation is developed between the areal measurements and the volumetric composition for this idealized mineral system. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is following the lead of the petroleum industry as it strives to tap vast offshore resources. Planning is well underway for the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) to recover high-grade seafloor massive sulphide deposits in 1600 m water depth. The deposit contains an average copper grade >10 times higher than a typical land-based porphyry copper mine. The high grades combined with a relatively small amount of overburden ensure the Solwara 1 Project will have a significantly smaller physical footprint than its land-based counterparts. Offshore minerals production also has the advantage of minimal social disturbance. Nautilus is dedicated to setting a high environmental and social responsibility standard. Nautilus recognises the importance of transparent and inclusive stakeholder engagement and has taken a proactive approach to involve as many key stakeholders as possible. One of the first steps in the permitting process in PNG is the preparation of the Environmental Inception Report, which describes the project, its envisaged impacts and the proposed studies for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Local (PNG-based) and international environmental scientists, anthropologists, NGOs and other experts were involved in the definition of studies conducted for the Solwara 1 EIA and a team of world-leading experts was involved with carrying out the studies, culminating in the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To ensure transparency, collaborating researchers are free to publish their findings. Following its submission, the EIS was made available for public review and public hearings were held at several locations. The EIS has also undergone a rigorous independent review by PNG government-engaged consultants. Outside the permitting process, Nautilus works alongside government officials to carry out ongoing community consultations. Information dissemination and feedback acquisition has also occurred through the Nautilus website and attendance at a number of international conferences, workshops, and meetings. This paper will outline the leading edge approach Nautilus has taken in completing the environmental impact statement for the world?s first deep seafloor copper-gold mine. In addition, this paper will review the permitting process and the government and stakeholder engagement undertaken as part of Nautilus? desire to ?do it right? in this exciting new industry.

Knowing the origin of the relevant and irrelevant components of the nugget effect is essential to optimize the process under study. This paper describes the causes of the nugget effect and, its dependency on the sample support, sampling density, and on the QA/QC procedures. Several examples of natural and ?human? nugget effect are given. A method to estimate the magnitude of the relevant and irrelevant components is suggested. Finally, the economic consequences of misunderstanding the nugget effect are analysed.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recently performed a laboratory study to evaluate which factors on an enclosed-cab filtration system are most significant. The various factors evaluated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading, wind infiltration, use of a recirculation filter, and the use of an intake pressurization fan. The result of this laboratory testing has shown that the two most important factors for an effective filtration system on an enclosed cab were the efficiency of the intake filter and the use of a recirculation filter. A higher-efficiency intake filter considerably increased the quality of the intake air that was delivered into the enclosed cab. It also was determined that air leakage around the intake filter notice-ably reduced its air cleaning effectiveness. The second key factor is the use of a recirculation filter, which was shown to improve the air quality in the enclosed cab by six to 12.7 times more than the intake filter alone. The reason for the significant improvement was that the cab air was constantly drawn through the recirculation filter, thus continually filtering the dust out of the air.

A new method of recycling aluminum dross for preparation Al-Si-Ti alloy was studied in this paper. This was carried out in two processes. first the aluminum doss was pretreated by leaching and calcining process, the fine purity and phase of the intermediate oxide powder up to electrolysis demands, then, could be obtained when aluminum dross after washing have been leached for 2h at 100? in 20% hydrochloric acid and calcined for 2h at 1200?, which was treated by cryoite-based molten salt electrolysis. Finally, the Al-Si-Ti alloy was successfully obtained through electrochemical co-deposition in the cathode shows a typical as-cast microstructure. This new recycling method can produce high quality alloy and may bring remarkable economic and social benefits.

Methods for dewatering and the control of ground water for construction and mining are discussed, including open pumping; predrainage with deep wells, wellpoints or other systems; cutoff or exclusion of water by steel sheet piling, slurry concrete walls and slurry trenching, grouting, ground freezing, compressed air, slurry shields and earth pressure balance shields. Criteria are given for the selection among the methods for a given project. Unwanted side effects of dewatering are listed, with procedures for evaluating and avoiding them, by cutoff or artificial recharge.

In this paper the performance effects of various shaped charge liner designs will be discussed. Several different charges will be tested and the liner design will be reviewed based on the performance in testing. The first type of shaped charge to be tested is a conical charge with dual confinement. For the purpose of this paper, dual confinement is a shaped charge with two liners but containing one explosive charge. Several charges with different dual confinement designs will be tested. Variations in configuration include charges with similar angle and similar diameter. The second type is a double conical shaped charge configuration. A double shaped charge will be considered to be two complete charges formed into a single cone. The goal of the project is to determine if any of the designs increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of the shaped charge in comparison to the standard conical shaped charge. A standard conical charge will be detonated against a witness plate to get a standard depth of penetration or a baseline. All charges will have a seven cone diameter standoff, allowing the data to be compared to the control charge. Computer modeling will be used to predict the results of the testing that will be conducted. The actual results will be compared to the computer simulation for validation.

The pump is the heart of most industrial and mining plants, providing the energy to separate valuable minerals from process feed. The actual effect of the pump, both in terms of production costs and overall process efficiency, is often assumed or misunderstood by engineers due to insufficient pump performance data. Pump performance can be understood and corrected, where required, through continuous performance monitoring, leading to dramatic improvements in both pump life cycle costs and system efficiencies. The performance of every pumping application is subject to variation and the main contributing factors are as follows: ?Unavoidable deviations from pump supplier curves ?Pump wear ?Pump curve derating factors for slurry pumping ?System curve variation ?Deviation from basic principles of centrifugal pump operation. These are discussed in detail through case studies and the author?s personal experiences. This paper shows ways to minimize the effect of these variations, thereby reducing performance loss and preventing damage to the pump. The paper discusses the benefits of efficient pump operation, the requirements of pump performance monitoring, and its practical application to pump operation in the slurry and water environments. The cost of remedial actions is explored and compared against the savings in both power and plant reliability, resulting in a reduced life cycle cost of the pump.

The relevance of reliability studies for deep foundations is considered in this paper with special reference to pile foundations. Attention is drawn to uncertainties related to applied loads, the load-carrying capacity and the safety margin of a pile foundation. The essential steps in a reliability study are outlined. An essential goal of any study is the determination of the Reliability Index or Safety Index under different conditions of loading and operation. Calculations concerning probability of failure or success require an assumption to be made concerning the probability distribution of the safety margin. The significance of this and other assumptions should be clearly understood. Reliability approaches should be used to complement conventional deterministic studies.

The main purpose of this study was to find the optimum values for factors affecting the Zn recovery rate using oxine or dithizone as a chelating agent collector during flotation in a Hallimond tube. Eight control factors, including four levels of pH, oxine/dithizone, corn starch, sodium thiosulfate, sodium citrate, sodium silicate, conditioning and floating durations were considered in a Taguchi experimental design technique. An L32 orthogonal array was applied to determine the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the optimum conditions and the most significant parameters affecting the reaction rate. Analysis of the experiments using the Taguchi approach indicated that pH had the highest contribution to the recovery rate of zinc oxide particles. The results showed that the recovery rate of zinc increased by 43.4 ± 3.0% and 24.9 ± 3.2% using oxine and dithizone, respectively, under optimum conditions with a confidence level of 90%.

This paper describes in detail various problems concerning the construction of a pile-raft foundation supporting a 42-storey tower block. The subsurface generally consists of highly weathered sedimentary rock. A comprehensive instrumentation program is implemented to monitor the behaviour of the foundation system throughout the construction period of the superstructure. Instrumentation observations are highlighted in the second half of the paper.
