Discussion of the paper of Woolsey McA. Johnson, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1137 to 1145. F. L. GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Johnson's paper must interest by suggestion those connected with the " burning " of lime, the production of cement, and the smelting of iron. All iron men know how quickly the impalpable purple ore of wet origin reduces compared to finely ground red hematites of approximately identical composition obtained from Lake lump ores. Most housekeepers appreciate that the several forms of carbon-charcoal, coke, and anthracite, not to include graphite and diamond -have different temperatures of ignition. The temperature usually rises with the density and hardness. Some of the scientific bureaus of the government might appropriately conduct some tests along lines suggested by Mr. Johnson's article. We are unable to say whether the topic lies within the spheres of activity of the Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Soils (Agricultural Department), the Geological Survey, or the Bureau of Standards. The calcining qualities of limestone is a topic too wide for individual effort and is of wide enough interest to merit government or State activity. It is of interest, as aforesaid, to burners of lime, cement manufacturers, and smelters. The chemical composition of a limestone does not tell all the story -if over 1-in. size lumps. The limestones of Annville and Myerstown, Pa., break at a tap; those on the Hudson above Poughkeepsie .act like "nigger heads." The manager of lime kilns near Lake Champlain told me his fuel consumption was high compared to that at other points. Yet the Hudson and Annville stones were both of greatest purity, being rivaled by only the marble at Rutland, Vt., or some stones near Martinsburg, W. Va. A local kiln operator says the conglomerate or pudding limestones of Loudoun county, Va., act very differently in the kiln from the more normal limestone deposits nearby. The tilted and twisted bedding in the anthracite region tells the story of hard coal origin. We might therefore expect that the limestones of greater geological age or depth or metamorphism

The following points serve to supplement the interesting theoretical study on forward combustion by Thomas, and may be of some general interest. The mathematical model presented by the author can be viewed as a first approximation to the problem of calculating the vertical burned height profile resulting from ignition of the interval | z |<h/2 in a very thick formation. However, the assumption of a given minimum combustion temperature T, would give a better approximation to the vertical burned profile if the burning height were not constrained to stay within the ignited layer. This follows from the fact that both fuel and oxygen are present in the adjacent region, |z|>h/2, and for certain combinations of process variables the temperature is sufficiently high for complete combustion to occur. In this case, the vertical coverage will first become greater than the ignited interval before cutting back to zero as the extinction limit is approached as shown in Fig. 1. Such growth of vertical coverage is possible if the minimum combustion temperature is less than the initial source temperature (r = rj) at the edge (z = h/2) of the ignited interval. But this latter temperature is equal to one-half the source temperature for the case of infinite burned height.&apos;,&apos; Thus growth will occur initially if The fact that the vertical burned height can be greater than the ignited interval complicates the picture considerably, as can be seen by referring to Fig. 1. Here burning occurs in Region A, whereas none was possible in the original mathematical model. At the same time, there is no combustion in Region B, contrary to the assumption of burning in the entire layer |z|<h/2. This apparent inconsistency suggests that the vertical coverage derived from this simple model does not adequately represent the vertical height of the burned zone. A more compatible model will result from the actual stepwise calculation of the burning length (as a function of time) that would give rise to the specified combustion temperature. This problem can be more conveniently attacked by using the temperature distribution, given by the author&apos;s Eq. 12, expressed in the integrated form:

DURING the prosecution of the aircraft-production program in 1917 and 1918, the writer visited many plants engaged in the manufacture of motors, planes and parts, in carrying out his duties as chairman of the Committee on Aircraft-engine Forgings. On several occasions, when the question of expansion was discussed, it was noted that there was confusion in the use of the terms: the true coefficient of expansion, a physical constant, and distortion in hardening. One engineer, referring to a steel shown in the accompanying table; stated that he could not consider it for crankshafts because of its excessive coefficient of expansion, while another steel, also listed in the table, as said to be especially good because it had no coefficient of expansion, since it came out of the oil bath perfectly straight. Many years ago one of our employees designed anew oil furnace; when asked what became of the products of combustion, he replied: "There ain&apos;t any, we burn them all up." While the coefficient of expansion is not without its effect in volume changes in hardened steel, it is not a determining factor in the matter of distortion and going out of shape. Irregular heating, uneven furnace bottoms, and carelessness in withdrawing the part from the furnace, as well as the manner in which the part enters the quenching bath are of greater moment. Generally speaking, also, steels of relatively low hardening temperature will distort less than those requiring higher hardening heats. The coefficient of expansion must be considered in engineering design most frequently when different metals or alloys are used in the same construction. For example, the difference of expansion between a steel crankshaft and an aluminum crank-case might be of real importance and a steel with no coefficient of expansion would be much less desirable than one with the normal coefficient. About 15 years ago, the writer made many determinations of the coefficient of expansion at low temperature ranges, usually between 20° and 100° C. Among the materials tested were: Pure forged electrolytic iron, 11.73 parts per million for 1° C.; cast aluminum (99.93 per cent. Al.),

THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

We note with sincere regret the death of H. T. Chen,, who was killed by forest fire in the mountainous re-ion of Kokiu-Chang where he had been operating as Engineer in Chief of the Yunnan Tin Trading Co. Mr. Chen graduated in 1911 from the Department, of Mines, .University of California, being the first Chinese Government scholar in mining to attend that institution; and one of the first in America. He came of a distinguished family, many members of Which are in official life in Peking and in his native province of Hunan, all of whom are noted for their classical scholarship. He was himself a Hsiao-tsai or Bachelor of Arts, a coveted degree of the old literati class, Which he won under the Manchu regime when he was still a stripling. His mining work in Yunnan was carried on with only the most primitive facilities and in a distant province, but was, nevertheless, attended with great success and profit for his company. The region is infested with brigands and rebellious troops. who frequently turn marauders and prey upon the countryside, and Mr. Chen has had to go to the mines always with a large armed guard sometimes aggregating 150 men and some hundreds of miners, also armed. Two armed squads of men keep in touch with his base &apos;at Kokiu-Chang every day to get supplies and food, and it is feared that the brigands who have thus been prevented from plundering and mobbing his parties have started &apos;he fires to burn him out, with the disastrous result reported. Mr. Chen has thus given his life to his country in the attempt to win for modern China and Chinese civilization the raw materials of her new industrial life. He did so cheerfully and with full appreciation of the dangers that beset him, and China regards this as one of the most noble sacrifices of her young sons on the altar of patriotism. He is survived by a daughter of two years and by his widow who was also a graduate of the University of California and will be remembered by her classmates as Lucy Kong, 1912.

MILLER, Canada. The nomination for President has attracted the attention of a large number of members, as is evidenced by the receipt of many hundreds of letters and postcards. Most of these favored either Sidney J. Jennings or Philip N. Moore, each of whom received many cordial endorsements. Such a wide interest on the part of the members is a very wholesome sign, but where there is so much activity it is natural to expect a certain amount of criticism. Some of the letters indicate that the authors feel that the nomination of President should be left entirely to the Committee on Nominations without any effort by the members at large to influence them. Others feel that the nominations are largely controlled by a small group and that the members at large can have little influence. As the result; of the experience of the last few months; a majority of the Committee on Nominations begs leave to suggest that the method of making nominations be changed so that two candidates, at least, for the various offices to be nominated, and suggests that the Directors appoint a committee to investigate this question thoroughly with. a view to making definite recommendations. In accordance with its opinion that the best interests of the Institute would be served by a change in the Constitution, allowing the nomination of two candidates, and in view of the fact that this Committee has no authority to make more than a single nomination for each office, considering the high standing of both Mr. Jennings and Mr. Moore and the large number of members favoring each of these gentlemen, this Committee respectfully suggests the desirability of ,the immediate nomination of Philip N. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott&apos;s rendition of Galileo&apos;s experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe&apos;&apos;" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we&apos;ll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don&apos;t have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting copper, nickel, cobalt, and sulphur from high grade nickel concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores, and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. IT is well known&apos;.&apos; 2 that copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, ferrous iron, and a number of other metals combine with ammonia in aqueous solution to form complex ions of the form [Me(NH,)x]"+. The stability and solubility of these ions depend on the concentration of the metal ion in solution, on the amount of NH, present, and on the amount and type of anions present, e.g., OH-, C0;-, NO,, C1-, SO;-. If ammonia is partially or completely removed from such solutions, for example by boiling, the soluble ammines tend to decompose and the metals precipitate as basic salts. These properties of metal ammines have found practical application in the commercial recovery of copper, nickel, and cobalt from a variety of ores. In an operation formerly conducted at Kennecott"" the mill tailing containing 0.80 pct Cu as copper carbonate was leached by percolation with an ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution to dissolve the copper as the ammine. At Calumet and Hecla0-" With a mill tailing containing about 0.4 pct Cu as metallic copper, it has been found necessary to aerate the ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach solutions between stages to oxidize the solubilized copper. At Nicarol"-" where nickel and cobalt occur as oxides and silicates which are not soluble in ammonia, the ore is heated to decompose silicates and to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt to metal, leaving the iron as Fe,O,, and is then leached with ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution accompanied by aeration to dissolve nickel and cobalt as ammines. In each of these leaching operations, the anion present is CO, and the metals can be precipitated from the leach solution as oxide (copper) or hydroxide and carbonate (nickel and cobalt) by boil- ing off NH, and C02 both of which are recycled to treat a subsequent ore charge. The products-—oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate—can be treated by conventional smelting, calcining, or electrolytic methods to convert them to refined metals. Thus the procedures mentioned utilize the properties of the ammines to extract copper, nickel, and cobalt from nonsulphide ores and separate them from the leach solutions. These processes have the advantage that they can be carried out in closed vessels at atmospheric pressure, that the leaching solutions are specific for the desired metals, that the metals can be recovered as relatively pure compounds by the boiling operation, and that the NH, and CO, can be recycled. Also, as the leach solutions after boiling and filtration are substantially free of metals, NH,, and CO,, they can be discarded, thus facilitating the control of the water balance in the leaching circuit. When, as is the case with Sherritt Gordon concentrates, sulphides are treated with ammonia solution in the presence of oxygen, the leach solution contains SO,--, and an entirely different set of conditions is encountered. The ammine sulphates (of nickel, for example) are more soluble than the carbonates and can be only partially decomposed by boiling. The SO, and NH, in the solutions can not be recovered by boiling. Thus, despite the more favorable leaching conditions resulting from high solubility of the ammine sulphates, the recovery of metals, NH,, and SO, from the solutions must be effected by other means. Sherritt Gordon Nickel Concentrate Treatment The Ni-Cu-Co flotation concentrate produced at Lynn Lake&apos;" contains 12 to 16 pct Ni, 1 to 2 pct Cu, 0.2 to 0.5 pct Co, 33 to 40 pct Fe, 28 to 34 pct S, 8 to 20 pct insoluble, and less than 0.02 oz per ton precious metals. The nickel is present chiefly as pentlandite, the copper as chalcopyrite, and the iron as pyrrhotite and pyrite. Most of the cobalt is thought to be present in pentlandite, although it is known that a small amount occurs as Co-Ni-pyrite.

THE writer has been unable to find much information relative to tests made to determine the effect of forging on the specific density of steel. The opinion, however, among men engaged in the business, seems to he that forging greatly compresses or consolidates the steel. While such is doubtless the case with spongy or porous steel, the following experiments indicate that there can be little or no change in the density with steel initially free from cavities: Ten ingots of basic open-hearth steel cast as shown in Fig. 1 were used in the experiments. All the specimens were 0.53 carbon with all other elements the same, the analysis being determined from drillings taken midway between the center and outside of the upper end, as shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were selected from over one thousand ingots so that the tests could be comparative for the work done in forging only, but no two of the ingots were cast in the same heat. Each ingot remained in the mold approximately 30 min., when it was removed and air-cooled. About 12 hr. later, when the temperature had been reduced to approximately that of the surrounding atmosphere, the head was discarded and the ingot heated in an oil furnace to approximately 2250° F. (1235° C). Approximately 1 min. was required to forge under the steam hammier to 1 ¼ in. (31.75 mm.), rough diameter, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. All ingots were allowed to air-cool after forging. Cylinders ½ in. (17.7 mm.) in diameter and ½ in. high were then turned from the forged and unforged parts of the ingots and numbered. The ten pairs of specimens were submitted to Louis E. Endsley, Professor of Railway Mechanical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh; A. N. Talbot, Professor of Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois; L. Z. Slater, chief chemist, Scullin Steel Co., St. Louis, Mo. No in-formation was furnished as to which specimens were forged or unforged and each laboratory used the same specimens, submitting the average of three independent determinations, a tabulation of which is shown in the accompanying table in which the laboratories are designated by

FOR the first ten months of 1942, on which data are available at the time this is written, the coal-mining industry achieved a most creditable safety record, and ha1 figures for the year may show a record surpassing that of 1941 in which the industry reached the best accident rate in its history. The ten- month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1942 was 2.197 fatalities per million tons of coal mined, compared with a revised rate of 2.271 for the same months of 1941. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.139 in 1941 to 2.039 for ten months of this year, and the anthracite rate shows a reduction from 3.707 to 3.699 for the same period.

Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in, the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5° to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30° to 50°. In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous- coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Lignite Sub Coking Coal bituminous Moisture 23.5 14.30 0.57 Volatile hydrocarbon 31.0 33.03 23.57 Fixed carbon 37.4 41.30 65.55 Ash 8.1 11.37 10.31 100.0. 100.00 100.00 Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulphur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and, as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea.

We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

The rates of growth of graphite nodules in cast irons are calculated for a model of a growing graphite sphere surrounded by a shell of austenite through which carbon and iron are diffusing. The carbon is supplied by a cementite-austenite mixture at the outer edge of the shell. The calculated rates from carbon diffusion agree fairly well with the measured values, but the rates based on iron self-diffusion are much too low. Because the iron must be removed for the process to continue, o plastic deformation mechanism is suggested. THERE has been an unfortunate tendency in the literature of growth and dissolution reactions to identify the slope of a plot of the logarithm of the growth or dissolution rate vs reciprocal of temperature with the activation energies determined by diffusion measurements in chemically similar systems. If the solubility limits at the growing or dissolving phase interfaces change appreciably with temperature, such procedures may lead to serious errors in specifying the mechanisms controlling the rates of these processes. A reaction involving the simultaneous growth of graphite from and dissolution of cementite in austenite will be discussed here to show that substantial oversimplifications have been made in earlier studies of this process. From a dilatometric study of the overall y-range graphitization process, Bunin and Danil&apos;chenko&apos; found an apparent activation energy of 90 kcal per g-atom. They concluded that, since this value was much nearer the approximately 68 kcal per g-atom observed for self-diffusion in pure iron than it was to 32 kcal per g-atom for diffusion of carbon in iron, the rate-controlling process must be the diffusion of iron away from the growth interface to provide space for graphite to grow. Bunin and Salli&apos; bolstered this agreement with the observation that graphite forms preferentially at surfaces, cracks, and pores where free volume is present initially. Ziegler, Meinhart, and DeaconQ ad found an apparent activation energy for graphitization of 98 kcal per g-atom. This value, like that of Bunin and Danil&apos;chenko, applies to nucleation and growth occurring simultaneously. It is not generally assumed that nucleation is entirely diffusion-controlled. Treatments such as prior cold-working and prequenching, which strongly affect the rate of graphitization, would be expected to have little effect on diffusion processes occurring at the graphitization temperature. In any case 90 kcal per g-atom is not particularly close to the 54 kcal or lower to be expected for diffusion of iron which is carbon-saturated.&apos; The presence of silicon in iron is said to reduce the activation energy for diffusion,&apos; so its presence in cast irons would be expected to have a similar effect. The growth rates of nearly spherical graphite nodules have been studied by Brown and Hawkes." The initial rate of growth before impingement of adjacent carbon-depleted areas was found to be parabolic, and rate constants were measured at several temperatures. Their apparent activation energy for the growth process only was roughly 45 kcal per mol. Burke and Owen&apos; made growth-rate measurements on several alloys, recording appreciable induction periods, initial nucleation rates, and average radial growth rates based on an assumed linear rate of radial growth. They found that increased silicon content increases the ovel-all reaction rate and the initial rate of nucleation, and decreases the induction period. Assuming 1) spherical nodules. 2) constant volume rate of nucleation, 3) austenite in equilibrium with cementite at positions where the cementite is not depleted, and 4) a constant diffusion distance during the growth of a nodule, they calculated an apparent overall activation energy of 68 kcal per mol, which was related to an activation energy for nucleation of 79 kcal per mol and activation energy

INTRODUCTION The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. The contract includes monitoring of two adjacent longwall panels. This paper summarizes the surface monitoring work that was performed through February of 1982. Mining of the first of the two panels (3 off 3 north) was completed on February 3, 1982. Results of the surface monitoring through completion of this panel are presented and discussed. SITE DESCRIPTION The mine being studied is located in eastern Ohio. THE development of the linear hot-wire anemometer has been chiefly clue to the efforts of L. V. Kings1 and A. E. Kennelly and H. S. Sanborn.2 The anemometers used by these investigators consisted essentially of a fine heating wire having attached leads for resistance measurements at distances of 10 or more centimeters from each other. In using such an anemometer, the current is measured that is necessary to maintain the resistance of the wire, between the two leads, constant for different air velocities. Thus resistance is always so chosen that the temperature of the heating wire will be sufficiently high to make the observations practically independent of small variations in the temperature of the gas in which the anemometer is placed. The measurement of the resistance of the anemometer wire requires a Kelvin bridge set up, which for commercial work is not altogether desirable. The cooling effect clue to different air velocities depends on the temperature difference between the wire and the gas and the total quantity or mass of gas passing the wire per unit tine. Since the temperature of the wire is maintained constant, the effect observed in the change in the heating currentfor a given change in air velocity is a measure of the difference between the gas flow in the two cases. Such an anemometer, therefore, measures the average gas flow for a length depending on the distance between the two resistance leads. Therefore the instrument in the form used thus far is not very satisfactory for measuring gas velocities in small tubes or in places where the velocity varies rapidly across the line of flow. For the purpose of measuring gas flow through relatively small tubes, where the velocity changes rather rapidly across the tube, the hot-wire anemometer has been modified in the manner shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The oxidation resistance and fabricability of molybdenum powder-metallurgy alloys containing up to 20 wt pct nickel in the form of a fine dispersion were studied. The effects of dispersion distribution and of amount and type (pure nickel or nickel compounds) of additive were considered. A definite improvement in oxidation resistance was observed, but the amount of improvement fell far short of requirements for an oxidation-resistant alloy. Fabricability by hot-rolling was limited. INVESTIGATIONS at Ohio State university1 and Battelle Memorial institute2 have indicated that the attainment of a truly oxidation-resistant molybdenum-base alloy for high-temperature service, with the coincident retention of high-temperature strength and toughness, will be a difficult, if not impossible, feat. Among the most promising alloy systems studied was the molybdenum-nickel system shown in Fig. 1. Alloys in this system show good oxidation resistance at temperatures well above the normal melting point of molybdenum trioxide because of the regenerative formation of protective nickel-molyb-date (NiMoO4) on the surface of the alloy during exposure at high temperatures. Unfortunately, the required alloy content to obtain oxidation resistant molybdenum-nickel alloys far exceeds the limits of the narrow terminal solid-solution boundary, and closely approaches the peri-tectic composition involving the brittle intermetal-lic compound, MoNi. Because of the peritectic reaction, fusion alloys are characteristically brittle, since the MoNi phase, being the last to form, tends to occur as a continuous grain-boundary network around each molybdenum grain. An added problem with this system is that the protective nickel-molybdate layer formed at high temperatures is unstable, undergoing one or more allotropic modifications upon cooling. The volume changes associated with this modification during cooling are such as to cause violent expulsion of the protective molybdate coating from the surface of the piece. This is, of course, quite detrimental in material exposed to cyclic temperature during service. The research reported here resulted from an attempt to overcome the aforementioned problems associated with the molybdenum-nickel alloys primarily by controlling the amount, size, and location of the MoNi phase. By using powder-metallurgy techniques of alloy preparation and sintering the blended molybdenum-nickel powder mixtures at a temperature below the peritectic reaction temperature, molybdenum-nickel alloys with a randomly dispersed MoNi phase were produced. MATERIALS The molybdenum powder used in the preparation of alloys for this study was commercial hydrogen reduced, minus 325-mesh (Tyler) material. Master alloys, by which nickel was added, consisted of elemental carbonyl nickel powder (12 average particle size), an alloy of 50 wt pct Ni-50 wt pct Cr, and compounds of MoNi, Ni,Si, and Ni2B. The nickel-chromium powder was prepared by filing a vacuum-arc-melted ingot, separating impurities magnetically, and screening to minus 200-mesh. The MoNi powder was prepared by pulverizing a hydrogen-sintered powder-metallurgy compact to minus 325-mesh material. Further sizing of this powder for study of effects of dispersion distribution was accomplished by air classification of the minus 325-mesh powder. The Ni2Si and Ni2B powders were prepared by crushing vacuum-sintered powder-metallurgy compacts to minus 200-mesh material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation—The general procedure followed in the preparation of alloys for testing is described as follows: 1) Blending. Either hand-blending of the powders in a ceramic mortar and pestle for X 1/2 or mechanical blending was used. Hand-blending seemed preferable for optimum homogeneity. 2) Compacting. Most of the blended powders were pressed to green compacts at pressures of 15 tons per sq in. in a single-action die, although some were pressed at 80 tons per sq in. A LTHOUGH a considerable number of experi--ti mental investigations dealing with the roasting of sulfide minerals have been reported in the past,&apos;"" the behavior of the single roasting particle does not appear to have received the attention it perhaps deserves. This is understandable in that the natural sulfide counterpart of the slab or sheet of metal normally used in high temperature oxidation studies is difficult to obtain and prepare, and is, in most cases, virtually impossible to maintain in one piece at roasting temperatures. The employment, on the other hand, of static aggregations of small particles in masses great enough to permit evaluation of the roasting reactions by means of thermobalances or gas analyses introduces other complications, such as localized overheating, sintering, and variable gas-solid contact. In this investigation a compromise between the above extremes was attempted. Closely sized (e.g., 30 to 40 mesh) particles of natural sulfide minerals were isothermally roasted, out of contact with one another, in an air-swept system. The progress of the roasting reactions was followed by examination in polished section of the treated particles and by X-ray and chemical analysis of their residual sulfide kernels. In this way some conclusions respecting the mechanism of roasting reactions were drawn. Roasting Furnace—The vertical tube furnace used for roasting the sulfide particles had a heated zone 10 1/2 in. long in which four retractable light gage stainless steel trays were suspended. Each tray, and an accompanying baffle, was mounted on a 2 in. iength of 3/8 in. stainless steel tubing. These assemblies were axially suspended on a 30 in. length of in. stainless tubing, by means of which they could be lifted from the hot zone to a water-cooled brass chamber at the top of the furnace. Since each tray unit could slide freely on the 30 in. tube, any desired number of the trays could be retained in the cooling chamber by the manipulation of a horizontal plunger during a momentary withdrawal of the four trays from the hot zone. Although three heating coils, each equipped with variable external resistance, were employed, it was found impossible to avoid a drop of 10O to 15OC between the temperature at the top tray and that of the lower three. Consequently, only the bottom three trays were used for roasting. Temperature readings inside the furnace were made by means of a thermocouple inserted down the tray support tube at tray levels, and a separate thermocouple, inserted adjacent to the middle heating coil, was connected to a Micromax temperature control unit. Experimental Method—The sulfide minerals were obtained in a form as free as possible from gangue and contaminating sulfides, and were crushed and screened to the required particle size range. The tray assembly was kept inside the furnace during the heating-up period and, when a steady temperature had been reached, the trays were withdrawn. Each tray was sprinkled with from 200 to 500 mg of the sulfide grains, and the assembly was lowered into the furnace without delay in order to minimize the time required to achieve the operating temperature. The furnace top was then clamped into position and the thermocouple inserted down the center tube to the required level. It was found that, when this procedure was used, the trays achieved their former temperature within 2 min, after which time the flow of dry air was begun at a rate of 1 liter per min, and timing of the run was started. At the required intervals of time the trays were successively withdrawn from the hot zone and stored in the cooling chamber by means of the retention plunger. On completion of the run the treated particles were removed from the trays to be set aside for examination.
