SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

At the annual meeting of this Institute held two years ago a new method1 of estimating the grindability of coal was described, based on experimental work carried on by the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station. Since that time, several organizations concerned with the testing or utilization of coal as pulverized fuel have adopted and used the method in determining the grindability of several hundred samples of coal. In addition, a series of comparative tests of this method and three others has been carried out in five laboratories under the auspices of Committee D-5 of the American Society for Testing Materials. As a result the Committee has recommended that the Bureau of Mines method, designated as the "ball-mill method," and the Hardgrove method2, previously advanced, be accepted as tentative standards3. Since the ball-mill method was originally developed and published, an opportunity has been presented to apply it to a larger number of coals and to study intensively some of the principles upon which the method is based. This paper presents a résumé of these further studies and includes a comparison with the Hardgrove-machine method. Trial runs were also made with another procedure recently proposed—the C.I.T. roll-test method4. IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

The preparation of pure metals by the thermal decomposition of volatile halides was developed byde boer' and van Arkel.2 This has proved to be a useful technique for the refining of columbium,the mechanical and physical properties of which are seriously altered by such interstitial contaminants as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon. The conventional deposition surface of a resis-tively heated metal filament was replaced, Fig. I, with an indirectly heated clear quartz surface. The impure columbium (feed) was contained in the annular space between the Vycor deposition bulb and the perforated molybdenum retaining cylinder. The head assembly was attached to the deposition bulb by fusing the Vycor at "A". This unit was then connected to a vacuum system composed of a three-turn glass coil to eliminate fracture due to vibration or expansion, a McLeod gage, a cold trap, a two-stage mercury diffusion pump, and a mechanical pump. The entire system was cold outgassed, and the 10 to 20 g of iodine in the auxiliary bulb (reservoir) was held in dry ice to prevent excessive loss of iodine. The columbium was hot outgassed at 800" to 825oC with the pressure maintained at l0-5 to 10-6 mm Hg for 48 hr and cooled under vacuum to 200° to 240oC. Iodine was sublimed from the reservoir and collected in the deposition bulb. The feed material temperature was adjusted to give the desired iodide vapor pressure and the finger temperature of 1000" C was independently attained and measured with a platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouple located in the center of the nichrome wire helical heating element, "F." The system was attended until temperature equilibrium was established, whence it operated without attention. This is a definite ad- vantage over the conventional "hot-wire" technique which required either constant attention or automatic control. In operation, the iodine vapor originally introduced into the vessel reacted with the crude metal to form a columbium iodide. This iodide vapor diffused to the hot deposition surface where it thermally decomposed, depositing columbium and releasing iodine. This liberated iodine then diffused back to the crude columbium where iodide was formed again. Thus, by repetition of this process, the iodine carried pure columbium from the crude material to the filament, where it deposited. The success of the "iodide" process in producing ductile metals depends on preventing the transfer of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon from the feed material to the deposit. In many cases relatively minor quantities of these interstitial contaminants impair the ductility of metals. The material produced by the iodide process has such exceptional ductility that it is frequently and mistakenly assumed that iodide metal is always of very high purity. This assumption is not necessarily true since a number of metallic impurities can also be transferred. In the present investigation, the temperature of the feed material was adjusted to iodinate selectively and the deposition temperature adjusted to decompose the iodides selectively. By this technique, some metals present in the feed material were prevented from codepositing with the columbium. It is quite important to have the feed material symmetrically located around the deposition surface in order to obtain a uniform deposit at the maximum rate. For example, Runnalls and pidgeon3 observed that, when the base of a titanium filament was about 1 cm from the feed material, deposition was rapid on that section close to the feed, but that the rate decreased with distance from the feed so that a

The study described in this paper is first centered on the determination of the physical properties (gravimetric, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic) o f metamorphosed iron ores of the Carol Lake-Labrador City District. Different geophysical surveys available in the Carol Lake-Wabush area were interpreted quantitatively and the dimensions, attitude, and tonnage of the ore bodies investigated were determined. A geophysical-statistical study was undertaken which permitted the determination of the grade of iron, magnetite, and, subsequently, specularite in the ore bodies. A discussion of the theory and logical progression of the study and the application of the results to actual geophysical data is presented. The conclusions, which are of real significance from the economic standpoint, may be predicted from the data obtained from geophysical surveys before any diamond drilling is undertaken. An integrated interpretation of this type is useful in planning future exploration work and selecting the most favorable geological structures. It also serves as a guide to minimize and determine tonnage drilling patterns. The general conclusion that a restricted range of residual gravity and magnetic anomalies are a key to exploration is valid. Indeed large depths to the top of deposits are absent since all the ore bodies are overturned synclinal structures with tops located close to the surface. Certain irregular geometries do occur but they are not common and the alignment of the iron ore bodies is sub parallel so that magnetic anomalies are evenly reduced in the earth's magnetic field vector.

THE interface energies of the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, are not well-established. The objective of this investigation was to study the liquid surface tension, solid surface energy, and grain-boundary energy of these metals and compare them to those found for the bcc solid-solution alloys, Cr-35e,&apos; 0-33e,&apos; and -25e. Five techniques were used to measure interface energies in high-purity polycrystal rod, wire, and sheet at 0.6 to 1.0 of the absolute liquidus temperature. The alloys were chosen to see if there was any connection between interface-energy behavior and the ductilizing rhenium effecL4j5 EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials. A description of the materials used is presented in Table I. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting iodide process crystals supplied by Chromallo Cor., hot extruding, and warm swaging to 0.63-cm-diam rod.6 The sheet was prepared by rolling as-extruded rod to 95 pct reduction in area from a hydrogen furnace at 800" to 900°C and surface grinding off 0.02 cm from each face. Cr-35Re rod was prepared by arc melting sintered rhenium powder and iodide chromium crystals, warm rod rolling to 50 pct reduction in area in cans, and swaging to 60 pct reduction in area at 1100" to 1200°C. Some of the rod was warm-rolled to sheet and then surface-ground. Portions of swaged chromium and Cr-35Re were further reduced by swaging and drawing to 0.013-cm-diam wire by the General Electric Co. Mo-33Re and W-25Re rod, sheet, and wire were provided by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The molybdenum sheet consisted of two lots, both essentially the same except for the carbon content. Liquid Surface Tension. The liquid surface tension of Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re was measured by a combination of pendant-drop and drop-weight methods using techniques already decribed." Following out-gassing, molten drops were formed on the ends of centerless-ground Mo-33Re and W-25Re rods by electron bombardment at 5 x 106 mm. Similar drops were formed on outgassed Cr-35Re rods by induction heating under 1 atm of 99.995 pct Ar. Solid Surface Energy. Solid surface energy was measured by conducting microcreep experiments on molybdenum, Mo-33Re, chromium, and Cr-35Re wires at 2350°, 2306, 1550°, and 180O°C, respectively. In preparation, gage marks -2.5 cm apart and -0.001 cm deep were circumferentially scribed on the wire with a razor blade. Weights of the wire material were then attached. Five to seven reasonably straight wires were hung in a container made out of the wire material. The free end was placed through a small hole in the removable top and secured by bending a small portion 90 deg. The containers not only tended to provide vapor-solid equilibrium for the wires but also protected them from gaseous impurities. They were nominally 2.5 cm in diam by 5 cm high and were made from extruded chromium rod, Cr-35Re arc casting, molybdenum bar stock, or welded Mo-33Re sheet. After deg re as ing, the assembly was outgassed at a relatively low temperature to 2 x 10"5 mm and then recrystallized 2 to 8 hr at the creep temperature in a rhenium-element resistance furnace. The static argon atmosphere was gettered by tantalum radiation shielding. Specimen temperature was measured optically to 25"C using calibration with known melting points and blackbody conditions. The wires generally developed a stable bamboo-type structure according to Fig, l(b), (c), and (d) and retained their gage marks [upper portion of Fig. l(d)]. One or two of the weights were clipped off to provide a low load for the creep anneal. WAGES in the United States, in spite of the wage freeze, have increased materially. Overtime payments have become standard practice in almost all industries. Now efforts are being made to place wages on an annual basis, and if this is adopted, it will result in an increase in the cost of production. Organized labor today is more powerful than ever before; union membership is large and steadily increasing, and in many instances membership in the union is a prerequisite to employment. The treasuries of many unions are strong as a result of the large membership and full employment. The unions, therefore, today are in a much better position than ever before to carry on long strikes. Politically, too, the unions are more powerful today than they ever were. On the basis of their strength, one may expect that some of the demands that the labor unions will make in the not distant future will be granted. It is, therefore, quite evident that before long, particularly when the curtailment in war production reaches about 40 per cent, this country will be confronted with a serious labor problem.

The diffusivity of uranium in liquid cadmium has been measured as a function of temperature by the capillary -bath technique. The diffusivity measurements were made at 4509 500°, 575º, and 650°C, over which temperature range the diffusivity of uranium varied from 1.3 to 2.3 x 10-5 sq cm per sec. The diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was less than that predicted by the Einstein-Stokes equation. VERY little information is available on the diffusivity of uranium in liquid metals. Bonillal has reported a single measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in bismuth. Measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was undertaken, not only to supply data in an area in which a dearth of information exists, but also because of a need for this physical property measurement in connection with mass transfer studies now underway in the U-Cd system at Argonne National Laboratory. The capillary-bath method used in this work has been successfully used by other workers2"4 to obtain diffusivities in liquid metal systems. Although considerable experimental technique is required to obtain reliable diffusivity measurements, the basic information required is only that of temperature, capillary tube length, the initial and final compositions of the alloy in the capillary tube, and the composition of the bath into which the solute element is diffusing. From these measurements, diffusivities may be calculated using Fick&apos;s law. The diffusivity equations are presented in the Appendix. Equations which are often used to predict diffusivities in dilute solutions5 are the Einstein-Stokes equation: D= (kT)/(6pµr) and the Eyring equation: D = (?,kT/?y?zp), where D= diffusivity (sq cm per sec), k = Boltzman&apos;s constant, T= temperature ("K), p = viscosity (poises), r = radius of diffusing molecule or species (cm), and A,, Ay, and A, are the diameters of the diffusing molecule in the three axial directions. For round molecules, the Eyring equation gives values which are 37r times larger than the Einstein-Stokes equation. In this work, the experimental values were compared to the Einstein-Stokes equation. Experimental values of diffusivities in liquid metal systems usually lie between those predicted by the Einstein-Stokes and Eyring equations. THE ECONOMIC THEORY It will assist in the understanding of the Resource Rent Tax ("RRT") proposals in Australia if the economic theory behind the tax is briefly explained. The idea goes back to the concept of rent put forward by the nineteenth century economist David Ricardo. His analysis was broadly as follows: A tenant who farms land which is just on the margin of economic viability cannot afford to pay his landlord any rent, because the value of the crop produced by such marginal land is equal to the cost of producing the crop, plus the cost of keeping the tenant alive. There is nothing left out of which to pay rent to landlord. A tenant who farms good land can afford to pay his landlord rent -- but the maximum amount of rent that he can be asked to pay is the excess of the value of the crop produced by the good land over the cost of producing the crop and of keeping the tenant alive. Adapting this theory to the taxation of mining projects, modern economists who favour this system of taxation say that a profitable mining (or resource) project produces rent in the Ricardian sense. The amount of the rent is the excess of the profits by the project over the amount of profit which is required to attract the taxpayer to invest in the project in the first place. This explains why the tax is called "Resource Rent Tax". PAPUA NEW GUINEA PRECEDENT Although Papua New Guinea ("PNG") is now independent of Australia, there are still close links between the two countries, and strong similarities between their respective tax regimes. PNG introduced an Additional Profits Tax ("APT") in 1978. In many respects, Australia&apos;s RRT proposals follow the precedent set by PNG1s APT. However, in practical terms, not a great deal can be learned at this stage from PNG&apos;s experiences since, according to the writer&apos;s understanding, no PNG mining project has yet paid any APT. The Bougainville mine is not liable to APT, being subject to tax under its own separate Act, which contains a different formula. Outline of PNG Additional Profits Tax. PNG has two versions of Additional Profits Tax ("APT) - one applying to general mining, the other to petroleum mining. The two versions are very similar. The general mining version is described below. The tax applies on a licence by licence basis. This means that losses on Licence A cannot be offset against profits on Licence B. Expenditure relating to two or more licences, is apportioned "in such manner as the Chief Controller thinks reasonable". Tax is levied on the "accumulated value of net cash receipts" at the rate of (70 - n)% where n=the rate of income tax. The accumulated value of net cash receipts ("av") is calculated as follows: Calculations commence from the first year in which substantial expenditure was incurred on the construction of facilities for the carrying out of mining operations on the licence. For that year the av consists of the total allowable expenditure to date on that lease. For the second year, the av is the av at the end of year one indexed in accordance with the statutory formula set out below, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 2. For year 3, the av is the av at the end of year 2 adjusted by the index factors, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 3. This process is repeated year after year. THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. I t must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. I t is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit.-The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample " core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless ~f the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone. This form was assumed to be the best, being most in accordance with the experience obtained with percussion drills. I t is found, however, that the exact reverse

The layer growth method has been used to investigate the reaction kinetics of liquid titanium and hafnium with carbon and the [liq] - [liq + TiC] and [liq] - [liq + HfC] phase boundaries at temperatures above 1800°C. The equipment and experimental procedures used in this investigation are basically identical to those described in an earlier paper&apos; on the Zr-C reaction. Temperature control, however, was improved significantly by connecting a Latronics Colo-Ratio automatic pyrometer and a controller to the power source. The subsequent temperature variations were ±10°C; previously ±20°C was obtained using manual controls. The absolute accuracy of the pyrometer, however, must be considered to be only ±40°C.* The spectrographic analyses of the materials used in this study are listed in Table I. The isothermal reactions of titanium (1800° to 2700°C) and hafnium (2300" to 3000°C) with carbon (graphite crucibles) resulted in the formation of carbon-saturated liquid metal and layers of Tic and HfC, respectively. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, determined from metallographic measurements at 100 times, as a function of carburization time and temperature are given in Figs. 1 and 2. At each temperature, parabolic growth behavior for these reactions was observed and could be expressed as x2 =Kpt, where X is scale thickness (corrected for heating and coolingL), Kp the parabolic growth constant, and t the isothermal carburization time. Values of Kp as a function of temperature for the carbides are shown in Fig. 3 and listed in Table 11. The growth constants are expressible as: kpTiC = 0.2 exp(-61,800/RT) sq cm per sec for Tic and Kp HfC = 2.62 exp(-95,300/RT) sq cm per sec for HfC. The liquidus phase boundaries were determined from metal samples treated in graphite crucibles for different times ranging from 4 to 100 min at each of the temperatures indicated in Table 11. Metallographic examination revealed that the carbide precipitates were distributed uniformly throughout the frozen metal matrices. This is attributed to the rapid cooling rates (800°C per min) and the small difference in density between the precipitated carbide and the liquid metal.

IN the third year of war, geophysical oil exploration broke all records to keep pace with the demand for increased reserves. Geophysical prospecting for strategic and other minerals also grew in scope. The trend of geophysical oil exploration throughout the war is indicated in Fig. 1. This figure resembles the one presented in the last annual review issue of M&M (February 1944, p. 62), corrected for data on-operations in the last months of 1943 and extended into 1944. The average number of geophysical oil prospecting crews in the field in 1944 was 451, whereas the total in 1943 was 340. An upward trend in the use of all geophysical methods is clearly evident throughout the year. Seismic operations were 67 per cent, gravimeter surveys 28 per cent, and other methods 5 per cent of the total. Seismic reflection and refraction crews increased 181/2 per cent over the 1943 average, gravimeter operations increased 73 per cent, and other methods gained 92 per cent. The increase in seismic and gravimeter operations, particularly the latter, is probably due to an increased production of equipment and the organization of new service companies. Miscellaneous methods gained largely through a revival of magnetometer work, and an increase in the use of torsion balances and electrical equipment. In comparison with the prewar average of 1941, it is noteworthy that seismic operations increased 58 per cent, gravimeter operations 88 per cent, and miscellaneous other methods gained as much as 283 per cent. Unfortunately the expansion in the number of geophysical crews does not indicate a proportionate increase in efficiency or in areal coverage, as will be brought out later.

Measurements of current efficiency at an iron anode during the electrolysis of FeO-CaO-SiO2 melts contained in an iron crucible indicate that compositions of high SiO5 content conduct current almost entirely by ionic mechanisms. Hozueuer, compositions of high metal oxide content give euidence for considerable nonionic conduction that can be attributed to p-type semicon-duction. Measurements of transference numbers in a Hittorf-type cell show that both calcium and iron ions are important contributors to ionic conduction. ELECTROCHEMICAL properties such as conductance, transference numbers. and oxidation or reduction at an electrode have been studied as means of delineating the structure of simple silicate melts that are related to the more complex slags encountered ir steelmaking processes.&apos; Measurement of these properties has strengthened the concept that molten silicates are constituted of metal ions and of silicate networks. Typically, the magnitude of electrical conductivity and the extent of agreement with Faraday&apos;s law have given evidence for ionic structures, and transference numbers have shown cations to be the exclusive carriers of electrical charge. However, melts containing oxides of iron, FeO in particular, have been found to exhibit nonionic conduction of curx,ent. The work by Inouye, Tomlinson, and chipman&apos; demonstrated semiconduction, presumably of the p-type, in molten wüstite. Simnad, Derge, and George3 and Dukelow and Derge,4 in studying the electrolysis of FeO-SiO2 and FeO-MnO-SiO2 melts, concluded that p-type semi-conduction occurs in these systems, although ionic conduction is generally favored by increased percentages of MnO or SIO2. WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.
