A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. As part of a program to establish the effect of crystal imperfections on laser output, a detailed study was made of the dislocation structure of ruby crystals obtained from varioius sources. Using KHSO4 as an etchant, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure on the (0001) and the (1150) planes was carried out. A less extensive study was made of the rhombohedral planes. The average dislocation density on the basal plane was 1.5 to 3 x 106 cm&apos;2 and on the (1120) planes -5 x 10&apos; cm-2. Howe7!er, considerable variation existed between areas on a given plane. The subboundaries in the basal plane tended to lie along [1100] type directions while those on the (1120) plane tended to lie: a) parallel to the basal plane, b) along truces of the (1101) plane, and c) along normals to the traces of the (0001) planes. The orientations suggest that mang of the dislocations lie on the (0001), (1701), and (1150) planes A Laue back-rellection nnalysis Of c-axis wander in one crystal revealed a gradual increase in misorientation from me end of the crystal to the other, with a maximum variation of 1°35&apos;. Slight etching of a mechanically polished crystal revealed mumerous polishing scratches, suggesting the existence of a plastic flow layer. It is recognized that chromium concentration, lineage, and other crystalline imperfections play a role in the efficiency of ruby lasers.&apos; Consequently, it is desirable to establish in detail the imperfection structure of ruby crystals to be used as lasers. Some exploratory work along this line had already been done by Barnes&apos; and Dils and Martin.&apos;" How- referred to as the morphological system, as described by Kronberg.4 The Miller indices given in the present paper will be based on this morphological system. In this system, the three common growth planes are the (0001), the {1120}, and the {1101}.5 Since these planes are of high stability, it is expected that they are most suitable for study by the etch-pit technique. In the present investigation, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure was carried out for the (0001) and the (1130) planes. A less extensive study was made of the etch-pit structure on rhombohedra1 planes. An analysis of dislocations in sapphire (the ruby host) was first made by kronberg,4 who postulated that slip on the (0001) plane occurred by motion of dislocations with Burgers vector 1/3 <1150> and that these dislocations might dissociate into quarter partials. An etch-pit technique using boiling phosphoric acid was developed by Scheuplein and Gibbs6, 7 for identifying dislocations intersecting the (0001) planes and the planes near (2021) in sapphire. Al-ford and Stephens8 were able to reveal dislocations on the (0001) and {1120} planes in sapphire and ruby by etching in fused potassium bisulfate (KHS04) at 675°C. The termini of basal dislocations [(000l), <1120>] were revealed by Palmour and Kriegel9 on {1120} and {1010} by thermally etching sapphire. Bond and Harvey10 were able to decorate dislocations in sapphire by adding 1 pet by weight of ZrO2 to the Al2O3 powder used in the growth of the crystals by the Verneuil technique and then heating the grown crystals for 4 hr at 1500°C. They found, using optical transmission microscopy, that many dislocations had straight segments which were parallel to one of the six [1120] directions in the basal plane. Single dislocation lines curved smoothly from one alignment to the other, turning through angles of 60 to 120 deg. Also observed were isolated hexagonal loops, approximately 10 µ in diameter, the sides of which lay along the same directions as did the longer dislocations. MATERIAL AND ETCHING PROCEDURE The ruby specimens used in this study (all containing approximately 0.04 pet Cr) had been obtained from four different sources: Linde Co., Meller Co., Valpey Crystal Corp., and those grown at Aerospace Corp.* For the initial phase of this study, several specimens were cut from the slab shown schematically in Fig. 1 which had previously been cut from a disk boule obtained from the Linde

Tlze green electroluminescence occurring at liquid-nitvogen temperature in epitaxial gallium phosphide diodes is exarnined using the donor dopants silicon and sulfur. Zinc is used as the p-type diffusant. Two tt~ain peaks are found, namely til 0.56 and 0.535 p. The intensity of the gYeen peak occurring at 0.56 is found to oary as -4"&apos; wlzere Jf is the forward current density and to first order appears to be dependent on the concet~tvation of ionized donovs. Tile vadintive lifetinze fov this process is -10-&apos;sec. The intensity of the 0.56-p lu~ninescence is nt least several ovdevs of magnitude greate,, at liquid-nitvogen temperature than that noted jor the 0.538 radiation for current densities up to about 35 amp per sq cm. ThE development of high-purity, large single crystals of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide is the ultimate aim of the studies to be reported. While a number of papers and reviews&apos; have been presented on properties of gallium phosphide grown from gallium solution and from the melt, less attention has been paid to the properties of epitaxial gallium phosphide grown from the vapor. In the studies to be reported we have examined the effects of shallow donor impurities, primarily silicon and sulfur, at liquid-nitrogen temperature, on both the electrical and green electroluminescent properties of carefully characterized single-crystal epitaxial Gap. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Preparation and Properties. The samules used in this investigation were single-crystal n-type epitaxial gallium phosphide. he single crystals were synthesized from the elements by vapor transport and epitaxial deposition on single-crystal gallium arsenide substrates. Typical transport agents used were chlorides. The growth procedures are described in more detail in Ref. 2. The samples were grown in the (111) orientation and had thicknesses up to 480 . Following the growth, the GaAs substrate was removed from the epitaxial Gap by etching in nitric acid. The Hall effect and resistivity of these n-type samples were measured as a function of temperature and analyzed for impurity content and compared with spectroscopic emission analysis. The results are given in greater detail in Ref. 3 but a summary is noted in Table I. In Table I, AED denotes the donor ionization energy, Nd is the donor impurity concentration, lvA is the acceptor impurity concentration, NI is the total impurity concentration, Rip vs temperature is the measured Hall mobility-temperature relationship from liquid nitrogen to about 400"K, n(77"K) is the measured carrier concentration at liquid nitrogen, and R/p(77&apos;~) is the measured Hall mobility at liquid nitrogen. Good agreement is noted between electrical and emission analysis for the major donor impurity, silicon, in the two materials where it is a major constituent. In the case of the two samples SC90-6 and AP138-3(111) B which were sulfur-doped the ionization energy found from the electrical data is in good agreement with that reported for sulfur.4 The acceptor impurities are not known, although from the presence of magnesium in the samples as indicated by emission analysis and its known role as an acceptor in GaP,4 magnesium could be present as an acceptor. Similarly, since silicon is known to be an amphoteric impurity4 it may also be present as an acceptor in the Gap.* The *A small band has been noted at 0.625 11 in samples SC90-6, SC76-4, and SC77-4, suggesting according to Ref. 5 that sillcon could be present as an acceptor In these samples since these authors have found this peak to represent a donor-silicon emission. presence of calcium deduced from emission analysis is not correlatable with the electrical analysis and its presence as an electrically active impurity should be questioned. B) Sample Preparation and Diode Fabrication. The original slices were of the order of 2 sq cm in area witi the (111)B face up. The material was cleaved and sectioned and the best pieces selected (i.e., those which visually appeared to have the least strain and defects). The samples were polished, lightly etched, and cleaned in trichloroethylene. Zinc was diffused in a closed tube at 800°C to form a p-n junction. Diodes were made from these samples. The depth of junction varied, but did not exceed 10 p depth. The back side of the slice was lapped back and a low-resistance n-type contact was formed (at 600°C in forming gas) to an Au-Mo tab with a hole in the middle for

The tensile characteristics of Zr-Fe binary alloys containing up to 5 atomic pet Fe are reported for the temperature range —195o to 500°C. A linear relation between stress at constant strain and volume fraction ZrFe2 was found. The coincidence of data from unalloyed zirconium with zero volume fraction ZrFe2 indicated little or no solid solution in IL-zirconium, in agreement with Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien.&apos; The absolute increase in strength due to particle strengthening, although decreasing with increasing temperature, was a greater percentage at high temperature. ZIRCONIUM is of interest for use in nuclear reactors because of its low neutron absorption, good corrosion resistance, and high melting temperature. The alloying of zirconium with iron has been considered as a means of increasing the mechanical strength of zirconium without seriously increasing the neutron absorption " over that of unalloyed zirconium. The Zr-Fe system has a eutectic at 934°C and 23.7 atomic pet Fe and a eutectoid at 800°C and 4.0 atomic pet Fe. The zirconium-rich end of this system determined by Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien&apos; is shown in Fig. 1. The intermetallic phase coexisting with a and ß-zirconium has been reported as Zr2Fe3,1 with a,, - 7.04A, and as ZrFe2,2 face-centered-cubic, the phase being of the MgCu, type (C-15). It was more recently agreed to be ZrFe33 and face-centered-cubic. This intermetallic phase is essentially insoluble in a-zirconium, the hexagonal-close-packed modification; and the lack of solubility makes the system particularly interesting metallurgically. The system is strengthened almost exclusively by particles of in-termetallic phase, and there is very little solid solution strengthening to complicate the analysis. The Bureau of Mines, in its survey of zirconium-base alloys,&apos; reported the tensile properties of Zr-Fe alloys made from chloride process zirconium, induction melted in graphite crucibles, and swaged at 850°C in iron sheaths. Additional data on these ZrFe alloys were given by Hayes, Roberson, and O&apos;Brien.&apos; Chubb and Muehlenkamp% have recently reported the strength of Zr-Fe alloys containing up to about 1.25 atomic pet Fe. These alloys were made from crystal bar zirconium, hot worked at 820°C, annealed at 700°C, and tested both at room temperature and at 316°C. Experimental Procedure The materials used in this investigation were high purity zirconium made by the iodide process and electrolytic iron. The composition of the zirconium as obtained by spectrographic analysis and the nominal composition of the iron are given in Table I. Alloy ingots weighing 100 g were made by are-melting under argon in water-cooled copper crucibles in a multihearth furnace."

THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-We have had in California a great deal of trouble from the breaking. off and collapsing of well casings from shifting sand, and it is quite true with us as indicated in the paper, that no casing has been found sufficiently strong to withstand that. I know of wells in which casing that has not been in the hole over 2 or 3 days has collapsed and when that casing has, been pulled out it has been just as flat as your hand. I am also familiar with swelling bed rock in the gold drift mining ground of California. It does swell and keeps on swelling and never seems to stop. Just as long as tunnels are kept open in that kind of material there has to be a gang going through the tunnel constantly cutting out and easing up. They have put in timbers 24 in. in diameter in an effort to hold that kind of ground and it has always filled. The only way to succeed is to keep a gang of men busy all the time cutting out and easing down as it squeezes in. C. NARAMORE, Washington, D. C.-My experience has been very similar to yours in, the same field in the matter of breaking off of casing. I had charge of one well, in which I put in reënforced casing, anchored it in place and got 1 day&apos;s production, 150 bbl., out of it. The following morning my lease foreman telephoned that it had broken off. I thought at that time we would have more evidence, so I drove out to the well without ordering a new shoe joint. It had been customary to merely start from town with a new shoe joint, pull the pipe, take off the crooked bottom joint, start the casing back and sometimes never touch any iron (lost casing)- when redrilling the well. FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. Bauxite is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and in the production of a number of useful chemicals as well as of aluminous cement "ciment fondu." An important and growing use is in the manufacture of refractory products. Composition Dana and earlier mineralogists gave the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.21120 and the composition as A1202, 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. A specific mineral of this composition has, however, never been identified by either microscopic, chemical or X ray examination, and therefore it is concluded that bauxite is a rock consisting of one or more aluminum minerals together with impurities. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203. 3H20 (A1203, 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1202, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct) ; diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1203, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mediterranean region in Europe is predominantly boehmite, as in France and Istria, subordinately a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, as in Dalmatia, or of boehmite (or gibbsite) and diaspore, as in Greece. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite, but boehmite in appreciable amount occurs in many places. Corundum (A1202) is not included un¬der bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities in variable amount, including silica in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloy site, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulfide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous, ferruginous, and phosphatic bauxite and siliceous and aluminous iron ores and manganese ores and nickel and chrome laterites. Phosphorus and manganese minerals locally form important impurities in bauxite deposits. Properties Gibbsite is white or light shades of gray, cream or pink. Its hardness is 2.5 to 3.5; specific gravity, 2.3 to 2.4; crystal system, monoclinic, crystals tabular parallel to 001, often fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic; luster, vitreous to pearly; generally translucent; cleavage, parallel to 001; disassociation temperature, approximately 300°C. Boehmite, a relatively new and important mineral described by J. Boehm15 in 1925, confirmed and named by J. de Lapparen64 in 1930, has some properties not yet definitely determined. The apparent high radiation resistance of two varieties of maraging steel is described and an indication is given of some phenomena that require further study. Two aspects were included in this work: a) effects of neutron irradiation on the room-ternperature tensile properties of 18 Ni (250) maraging steel; b) effects of neutron irradiation on the room-temperature tensile properties and on the impact resistance of 12 pct Ni-5pct Cr-3 pct Mo maraging steel. Subsize tensile and impact test specimens were used. The 18 pct Ni steel was irradiated to a neutron fluence of 3.3 x 10 n per sq cm (>1 mev). The 12-5-3 variety was irradiated to two neutron fluence levels: 1) 1.5 x 10 per sq CTTL (>I mev) 2) 3.1 x 10&apos;9nper sq cm (>1 mev) In all respects both varieties showed unusually high resistance to change in strength and ductility after neutron irradiation. There was no noteuorthy over-aging in fully aged specimens. The aged 18 pct Ni variety showed a 4 pct drop in yield strength upon irradiation with little or no decrease in ductility. The aged 12-5-3 variety showed a 5 pct increase in yield strength on irradiation with a very slight decrease in ductility. The impact transition of the 12-5-3 variety only increased 35 to 45 Co upon irradiation, and the shear energy fracture value for the subsized specimens decreased only half as much as expected frorn experience with conventional steels. THE development of new reactor concepts and nuclear technology now depends to a large extent on the availability of new alloys capable of operating in stringent reactor environments. One of the most important new types of metallurgical material that has been developed in recent years is the maraging steels. This type of alloy is notable for its remarkable retention of toughness at high strength levels. In the course of a research program which incorporated ambient temperature radiation effects studies to determine the mechanisms of strengthening of 18 pct nickel maraging steel,&apos; it became evident that the resistance of the alloy to neutron-induced changes in mechanical properties should be studied. This paper is to present evidence for the apparent high radiation resistance of maraging steel. The experimental program was in two parts: a) Effect of neutron irradiation on the room-temperature tensile properties of 18 Ni (250) maraging steel. b) Effect of neutron irradiation on the room-temperature tensile properties and on the impact resistance of 12 pct Ni-5 pct Cr-3 pct Mo maraging steel, a cobalt-free alloy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 18 Ni (250) Maraging Steel. Tensile test specimens were machined to the dimensions shown in Fig. 1 from $-in.-diam hot-rolled bar of the composition shown in Table I. All specimens were austenitized for 1 hr at 1500°F (815°C) in argon and water-quenched. Half of the specimens were then mar aged for 3 hr at 900° F (482°C) in argon. The specimens were irradiated in a fast neutron transformer rod at approximately 120°F (50°C) to a neutron fluence of 3.3 x 10 10 n per sq cm (>1 mev). The irradiation was performed in the NRX reactor of Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd., at Chalk River, Ontario, Canada. In all cases, the thermal neutron flux was three times as high as the reported (> 1 mev) fluxes. The room-temperature tensile tests were performed with an Instron tensile testing machine operating at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, &apos;the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphurets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chicago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crnde argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, . - at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. THE scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given&apos; of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores. Principle and equipment are the same as for the test for tensile strength of hydraulic-cement mortar.&apos; The test specimen, Fig. 1, has the shape of a briquet. While in the original cement mortar test the briquet is cast in a special mold, it is prepared from rocks in different ways, depending on how easily they can be cut and shaped. Soft rocks, which cannot be core-drilled with a carboloy or diamond bit, are simply hand-cut. Only two dimensions need be watched. The first is the 1-in. diam at the narrowest cross-section of the briquet. The other critical measure is the radius of curvature of the waistline, as the roller supports in the grips have a fixed distance. This radius is ground out of the solid by means of a carborundum grinding wheel having a 3/4-in. radius. Medium hard rocks can be core-drilled with a carboloy bit. The resulting core can be used for nondestructive sonic testing first, and after that for any destructive test. By using an EX-bit and by carefully placing the coreholes, preferably by using a tenplate such as shown in Fig. 1, it is possible to obtain from the rock a punched sample from which numerous tensile briquets can be made. The outside radius of the EX-bit differs from the radius of curvature of the briquet by 1/8 in., but this still permits placing and aligning the specimen in the grips. In the case of bedded rocks the core might have bedding planes normal to the plane of the briquets, and rocks can be tested in any arrangement of the bedding planes desired. Hard rocks, limestones, igneous, and metamor-whic rocks can only be diamond-drilled or diamond-cut. Here the method of getting the tension briquets by accurate placing of EX-drill holes is especially economical. The tops of the briquets made from hard rocks cannot be rounded; they are straight cuts made with a diamond cut-off saw and rounded off on a polishing wheel. Results: As long as specimens broke over the waistline the results were considered acceptable. Further statistical treatment of the tests&apos; showed a satisfactory percentage of standard deviation. The tensile strength values obtained by this method do not represent true values because of the stress concentration caused by the curvature of the side of the piece and because of the closeness of the grips. The ratio of maximum to average stress at the plane of failure has been determined to be about 1.75." All tensile strength values listed in Table I are corrected accordingly. To avoid this stress-concentration, if there are a sufficient number of cores, tensile strength can be measured by imbedding the cores in mortar in the two outer briquets in the gangmold.4 Strain-Measurements: The applicability of the briquet specimens for strain observations was tested in the case of sandstone and shale. Two element Rosette SR-4 strain gages were used. IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. To present an elaborate review of the conditions which have brought to a crisis the unfortunate situation in the British coal industry is here unnecessary, but certain of the salient points

INTRODUCTION THE use of iron powder during the post-war conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: I. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price-The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. Iron powder parts are compressed in automatic presses to definite size, shape, and density. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

JOHNSON, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I hope that this contribution of Mr. Washburne&apos;s is only the first of a series dealing more in detail with the very important problems involved. Pores are of two kinds: Those which are entirely inclosed, so that they do not belong to a system of communicating pores tapped by the bore hole or shot hole; second, those which do so communicate. Porosity, of course, includes both. But since pores of the first class are valueless to us, we should confine our attention to the latter, for which I propose the term "effective porosity." This should be measured by the Wisconsin method, based on the quantity of fluid that can be introduced by the aid of vacuum. Another factor which requires attention in this connection is the dependence of the extractability upon the rate of loss of pressure, as affected by the number of holes, and the rapidity of their completion, the existence of uncontrolled wells, the use by other operators of vacuum pumps upon the casing head, the exhaustion of a gas field in the same reservoir prior to the discovery of the oil, etc. The extractability depends upon the pressure available for the exclusion of the oil from the reservoir into the hole. The action of gravity in bringing oil into the hole is relatively small where the pores are very small, as is so frequently the case.

T HE Mysore iron works, at Bhadravati, about 2000 ft. above sea level in the Shimoga district of Mysore, British India, is served by a meter gage branch line of the Mysore State Railways. The works which were designed and erected by Perin & Marshall, who still act as consulting engineers, are surrounded by a thickly wooded country which sup- plies about 400 tons per day of wood for fuel. The ore deposits lie 20 miles to the south, and limestone quarries are close by the works. The Bhadra river sup- plies the works and the town with the necessary quantity of water. IT is not my purpose to burden you with many statistics. The charts herewith should be considered merely as indicating the trend. I believe&apos; that is what is really of interest to us. It is difficult, if not impossible to forecast with any assurance future developments, because of possible new mines, competitive materials, curtailment&apos; or increase in the use of the metal in certain markets, and many other factors that have a vital bearing on any industry. Fig. 1 shows United States smeltet output of copper, starting with 1845. It is estimated that in 1928 the smelter output of copper will be about 1,010,000 tons. Between 1895 and 1905 it increased about 200,000 tons, and between 1905 and 1915 about 240,000 tons. Between 1915 and 1925 the increase was about 140,000 tons. This is an average increase over 30 years of about 190,00Q tons per ten-year period. At the present time the indications are that this demand for increased production will continue. As to whether or not we have the supplies or facilities to maintain this increase or a greater one, remains to be seen. Provided it is possible for United States smelters to increase their production, they should be producing at the rate of about 1,210,000 tons or more per year by 1935.

The effect of transition elements which form binary solid solution upon the recrystallization temperature of zirconium has been investigated. All additions raised the recrystallization temperature. A correlation is obtained between the logarithm of the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the free atom ground state electron configuration of the solute element. ThE work of Abrahamson, et al., on dilute binary solid-solution alloys indicated a correlation between the free-atom ground state electron configuration of the solute and either the brittle-ductile transition or recrystallization temperature. These studies were carried out on bcc base materials. The implication is that the outer s and d electrons of the solute are the prime determinant of the absolute rate of change of recrystallization or transition temperature. Furthermore, the limit of linearity has been shown to be a function of solute electron configuration for recrystallization in iron and vanadium. To date no Complete systematic recrystallization study of dilute binary zirconium base alloys has been made. It is the purpose of this study to note whether the change in solvent structure from bcc to hcp will influence the correlation. It was also desired to learn more of the role of the electron configuration of the solvent on recrystallization temperature. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.87 pct Zr with 0.01 Cr, 0.04 Fe, 0.006 Hf, 0.003 Mg, 0.003 Mn, 0.003 N, and 0.080 0 (132 BHN). The solute elements were 99.9 pct pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams6 and metallographic examinations at X750, all alloys used were solid solutions. The alloys were arc melted and remelted six times in the form of cubic 200-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot pressed at 950°C to 0.450 in., upset pressed to 0.350 in., and annealed at 800°C for 1 hr. The specimens were then Blanchard ground to 0.250 in., removing 0.050 in. from each side. The grain size of the material at this stage was found to be 8000 100 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then cold rolled to 0.130 in. and cold pressed to 0.125 in., yielding 50 1 pct cold work. All alloys were then chemically analyzed for the principal addition. The interstitial contents remained at the values of the starting material when checked on random alloy specimens. The rolled sheet was cut into 6.75 by 0.25-in. lengths and heat treated in a gradient furnace for 1 hr. The gradient was 250o to 900°C over the 6-in. length, recorded continuously by six thermocouples resting on each specimen. Control was 3oC, accomplished at the hot end. The recrystallization temperature was determined metallographically using polarized light. The criterion chosen was the point on the specimen showing the first recrystallized grain at a constant magnification, X200. Specimens were repeated, and the agreement was found to be 3°C. I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. Sand-index : The number proportional to its total fineness considered from the economical point of view, as explained on page 93. Absolute extraction : The percentage of values actually brought into solution. Actual extraction: The percentage of values actually brought to the ziuc-boxes. Units : Dollars, U. S.
