IN the Chihuahua district of Mexico the first smelting was that inaugurated by the early Spaniards for the production of silver bullion. The ores treated were high in silver and lead. Silver-lead bullion was first produced and the lead then cupelled to waste, with the slag produced running from 5 to 10 per cent in lead and about 25 to 40 per cent silica. The ore was mined by peon labor, often being carried out of the mine on the backs of the men, and then transported by burros. Furnaces were of primitive construction, adobe or rock being used in the earlier period and some iron later when it became available. Blast was originally supplied by bellows manually operated. Such smelting was carried on to a greater or lesser extent until the latter part of the last century, and so extensive was it that many hundred thousand tons of leady slag remained to be treated in modern furnaces. In 1908 a smelter was placed in operation at Chihuahua by the American Smelting & Refining Co. At that time the ore was practically all oxidized and by a little selection, self-fluxing mixtures could be made, but with an average lead content usually under 10 per cent and sometimes as low as 7 per cent. The bullion produced would carry from 150 to 300 oz. silver per ton. The slag made approximated 30 per cent SiO2, 42 per cent FeO, 21 per cent CaO, and perhaps 3 per cent Zn. The ores varied from hard, coarse material which was passed through a crusher, to a considerable quantity of fines which had to be smelted as it came, as crushing the coarse was the only preparation for smelting.

Electrical resistivity variation with temperature was measured on a series of alloys containting up to 33 at. pct of oxygen over the range 77° to1500°K. The resistivity behavior is highly anomalous and itzconsistent with simple metallic conduction. Both composition and temperature-depended resistivity singularities were observed. A few experiments carried out on Ti-N and Zr-O alloys indicate the presence of similar anomalies. These observations, together with the published data on effects of substi-tutional alloying on the resistiuity of titanium, suggest that the anomalies are inhevent in the electron structure of this group oj metals. The existence of two-band conduction, and a significant shift of bands relative to each other with temperature and/or the electron concentration are suggested. CONSIDERABLE advances have been made in recent years in the alloy theory of simple metals. Very little, however, is known about the bonding in transition metals and their alloys.&apos; Titanium, with its relatively few electrons, may be expected to show simpler alloying behavior than the more complex transition elements. Its alloys with the interstitial elements appear particularly attractive in an investigation of bonding characteristics because of a) the simple nature of the solute elements, b) the remarkable similarity between the equiatomic structures Tic, TiN, and TiO, and c) the extensive solid solubility ranges of oxygen and nitrogen in a titanium reported.2,3 The Ti-O system was chosen for the most extensive investigation because of the relative ease of preparation of suitable specimens. Since the main object of the work was to obtain data on the bonding and its changes on alloying, electron-sensitive properties were primarily investigated. The present work describes the investigation on the electrical resistivity-temperature-oxygen content relationships. A few experiments were also carried out at selected compositions in the Ti-N and Zr-O systems. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Method. Polycrystalline specimens were prepared in the form of hairpin strips some 50 by 5 by 0.15 to 0.50 mm by direct metal-gas reaction. This was carried out by controlled oxidation followed by a homogenizing anneal at a higher temperature. All the test specimens were fully homogenized as judged from the uniform microstructure and microhardness. To avoid preferred orientation, each strip specimen was annealed in the ß range prior to the oxidation, this procedure assuring random orientation in the strip;4 hence any texture resulting from the oxidation reaction itself affected all the specimens to a similar extent. Titanium used was of high purity (66 DPN, 10 Kg load; major impurities 0,-43G ppm, N,-70 ppm, C-25 ppm, Fe-14G ppm). The solute content of the alloys was determined by weighing, after the reaction with a known amount of oxygen. The specimens in which the discrepancy between the volumetric and gravimetric measurements exceeded 2 pct (or 0.2 mg for the low oxygen alloys) were rejected. The mean between the two measurements was then taken as the oxygen content of the alloy. Check analyses showed no measurable nitrogen contamination. All oxygen contents are given in atomic percent. Zr-O alloys were prepared in identical manner from hafnium-free crystal bar metal, cold-rolled to strip 0.25 mm thick. Ti-N alloys required very long reaction times at the maximum temperature available (1250°C). In order, therefore, to detect possible oxygen contamination, duplicate specimens were reacted in every experimental run, and one of these was analyzed both for oxygen (vacuum fusion) and for nitrogen (Kjeldahl). Only the specimens in which the check analysis showed < 1000 ppm O were then used for resistivity investigation. Since only relatively high nitrogen alloys (7.1 at. pct; i.e., 2 wt pct N,) were investigated, this oxygen contamination was considered permissible. Dc resistance was measured by the four-probe method as previously described.= The temperature was determined with a calibrated thermocouple placed in the center of the specimen hairpin. The errors in the specimen resistance values thus obtained were estimated at 1 pct due almost exclusively to the finite thickness of the potential wires and the consequent uncertainty as regards the true resistance length of the specimen. The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 36 tons of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 5 or 6 tons. Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a mine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. But it must also be controlled long before it reaches this stage. Water standing in the working faces is unpleasant for the men who have to work there and also cuts down on the amount of work they can do, as they must watch where they step all the time. It is especially unpleasant in low coal.

Thermal, metallographic, vapor pressure, and X-ray data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the zinc-zzrconiz~m system. Five compounds corresponding to the stoi-chiometric formulas ZrZn, ZrZn,, ZrZn,, ZrZn,, and ZrZn14 were observed. All these compounds, with the exception of ZrZn2, which melts congruently at 1180°C under constrained zinc-vapor conditions, undergo pexitectic reactians. The temperature at which the zinc vapor pressure is I atm for a series of alloys was determined from vapor-pressure measurements. The data obtained are summarized in the construction of a I-atm-pressure phase diagram and a phase diagram corresponding to a pressure of less than 10 atm. THE purpose of this investigation was to establish the phase diagram for the zinc-zirconium system. Thermal, metallographic, vapor pressure, and X-ray data were employed in determining the phase regions. Partial investigations of this system have been conducted by Gebhardt1 and Carlson and Borders.&apos; Carlson and Borders studied the high-zirconium region and established the existence of a eutectic at 69 wt pct Zr with a melting point of 1015°C. The terminal phases of the eutectic horizontal were shown to be an intermetallic compound ZrZn and a solid solution of ß zirconium containing 21 wt pct Zn. The ß solid solution decomposes into ZrZn and a zirconium at 750°C. The eutectoid composition is given as 15 wt pct Zn, and the solubility of zinc in a zirconium at temperatures below 750°C is indicated to be negligible. Gebhardt studied the zinc-rich region and observed a lowering of the melting point of zinc from 419.5" to 416°C and temperature horizontals at 545" and970°C. Some preliminary observations by Chiotti, Ratliff, and Kilp were reported by Hayes.2 pietrokowsky3 has reported the compound ZrZn2 to have a cubic MgCu2 structure with ao = 7.396A. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both 99.99 pct pure and hafnium-free iodide-process crystal bar zirconium obtained from the Westinghouse Electric Corp. The zirconium contained 200 ppm Fe, 200 ppm Si, 100 ppm C, and minor amounts of other impurities. The zirconium was milled or machined into thin chips or shavings. These were cleaned with a nitric-hydrofluoric acid solution, rinsed with water, and acetone, and dried just prior to their use in alloy preparation. The granulated zinc was similarly cleaned using dilute nitric or hydrochloric acid. Weighed quantities of these materials, 20 to 30 g total, were mixed and pressed at 20,000 to 70,000 psi to give relatively dense compacts. During the early part of this investigation the pressed compacts were placed in MgO-15 wt pct MgF, crucibles which were then sealed inside of quartz ampules. The compacts were given various prolonged heat treatments prior to their use for thermal analyses, or vapor-pressure measurements. Because of expansion of the compacts and the relatively high zinc vapor pressure it was difficult to heat to the melting temperatures of the alloys without failure of the quartz ampules. Homogenization at temperatures below the melting temperature gave brittle, porous alloys unsuitable for metallographic examination. It was also difficult to prevent condensation and segregation of zinc on the colder parts of the quartz ampules during heating and cooling operations. These problems were eliminated to a great extent by the use of tantalum crucibles. Tantalum proved to be a satisfactory container with little or no reaction between the alloys and the tantalum. Small tantalum thermocouple wells were successfully welded in the bottom of these crucibles. Pressed compacts were sealed inside the tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed caps under an argon atmosphere. Heat treating and differential thermal analysis were combined into a single operation. The experimental sample assembly is shown in Fig. 1. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless-steel tube heating chamber which could be evacuated and filled with an inert gas. The thermocouple leads were brought out of the heating chamber between two rubber gaskets used to provide a vacuum seal for the water-cooled head. Most of the compounds in this system undergo peritectic decomposition. After heating above the temperature of a particular peritectic horizontal the sample was cooled to just below the peritectic temperature and held at temperature for several hours. The sample was then reheated through the peritectic temperature and the size of the thermal arrest, if still present, compared with the one previously obtained. If the thermal arrest was not characteristic for the alloy composition being investigated its magnitude diminished and repeated cycling and annealing eventually eliminated it. The peritectic thermal arrests characteristic of a particular composition were established in this manner.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.&apos;-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .&apos; This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.&apos; In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,&apos; by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,&apos;O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua." In a recent survey of the literature, the author has found evidence incompatible with prevalent views regarding the technical cohesive strength and yield strength of metals. Some of the evidence regarding the technical cohesive strength was presented in a previous paper,21 and views were presented that are believed to be in better accord with the evidence. In that paper, it was shown that the technical cohesion limit (contrary to prevalent views) varies with the combination of principal stresses,t and that the influence of plastic deformation on the technical cohesive strength is not in accordance with prevalent views. In this paper, consideration will be given to both the technical cohesion limit and the yield stress as affected by the combination of principal stresses. Evidence will be presented that the variations of the yield stress and the technical cohesion limit with the combination of principal stresses are not in accordance with prevalent views. Consideration will also be given to ductility and work-hardening capacity, which depend on the initial difference between the technical cohesion limit and the yield stress. By the "technical cohesion limit" is meant the mean stress at actual or poten- tial* fracture. An example of a rechnlcal cohesion limit is the "true" breaking stress of a tension-test specimen, the breaking load divided by the sectional area at fracture. The cohesion limit thus obtained for a ductile metal, however, has been greatly altered by the plastic deformation. It is important to consider the cohesion limit of the metal prior to this deformation, and the variation of the cohesive strength with plastic deformation. The relation between the cohesion limit and the corresponding flow stresst determines the ductility of a metal and the energy that it will absorb before fracture. In this paper, as in the previous paper,21 tensile stresses will be viewed as positive and compressive stresses as negative. The algebraically greatest principal stress will be designated S1, the least principal stress will be designated S3, and the intermediate principal stress will be designated Sz In the previous paper, attention was confined to stress combinations with two of the principal stresses equal (with the intermediate principal stress S2 equal eithel to S3 or 31). In this paper, consideration will also be given to the effect of stress combinations with all three principal stresses unequal. THE development of a cement that will resist the destructive action of sea water and other corrosive waters is a problem that has occupied cement chemists for the past one hundred years. It has been found that of the various salts that commonly occur in corrosive waters, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium chloride are most destruc-tive to cement. Many investigations have been carried out in the United States, in Canada, and in Europe to solve the problem of what constitutes a sulphate-resistant cement, and during the past 10 years some of the findings give definite information in this respect. COMPOSITION OF CEMENT Portland cement is composed of four major compounds: 1. Tricalcium silicate 3CaO.Si02 (C3S) 2. Dicalcium silicate 2CaO.Si02 (C2S) 3. Tricalcium aluminate 3CaO.Al203 (C3A) 4. Tetracalcium aluminoferrite 4CaO.Al203.Fe203 (C4AF) The two calcium silicates are the main contributors of strength. The tricalcium aluminate contributes some to the early strength of the cement but has the least resistance of the four compounds toward the attack of sulphate waters. The tetracalcium aluminoferrite does not contribute very much to the strength, but is far more resistant to sulphate waters than the tricalcium aluminate. When hardened cement is exposed to water containing sodium or magnesium sulphates, these salts will react with the hydrated tricalcium aluminate in the cement and form compounds that will cause a swelling, disruption and crumbling of the hardened cement.

Rubber-tired shuttle cars are finding increased use as gathering units in under-ground mines. As the name implies, they shuttle back and forth between the loading machine and the section transportation system. In many mines their use has in-creased the efficiency of the loading and gathering operations, resulting in increased output per man employed and decreased costs per ton. A car motivated by cable reel is shown in Fig I, and a car with battery power in Fig 2. A brief chronological account of the development of rubber-tired haulage equip-ment follows: 1936. J. H. Fletcher1 installed his first unit for the Blue Bird Coal Co., Carrier Mills, Illinois. This unit consisted of a battery-powered industrial tractor and a trailer with drop-bottom doors. The coal was transported for short distances to a hopper for discharge into mine cars. 1938. A battery-powered self-contained shut-tle car with rubber-tired wheels was built by the Joy Manufacturing Co. Two units were installed for the Katherine Coal Co., Lumberport, West Virginia. The shuttle car consisted of a materials-receiving body with a conveyor in the bottom to move the coal forward during loading and to unload the coal at the discharge station. 1938. A cable-powered shuttle car with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer was developed by A. L. Lee. Special wheels mounted on king pins on the car permitted all four wheels to be steered. The cable reel was driven by a torque motor to give the cable proper tension during the payout and uniform tension when rewound on the reel. 1940. A Joy shuttle car equipped with trolley poles and a cable reel was developed to operate on a double trolley-wire system.2 This unit was installed at a potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation at Carlsbad, New Mexico. It is believed to have been the first installation of its kind, and the first of shuttle cars for handling material other than coal. 1941. Truck haulage3 was introduced in the Tri State District by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company. Storage battery electric trucks were rebuilt to handle a bottom-dump trailer. 1941—Joy shuttle cars were installed in a mine of the United States Gypsum Company, Oakfield, New York. 1943—Joy shuttle cars were installed in several bauxite mines.4,5 1945—Joy shuttle cars installed in a lime-stone mine. Because of the nature of bituminous coal beds trackless equipment has had its greatest application in bituminous coal mining. Usually a shuttle car is filled by a continuous type of loader. Flotation ENTERING the profession of minerals beneficiation (it was plain garden variety "ore dressing" . in those days) I was fortunate that at that time the first major innovation in modern ore dressing practice was being introduced. I refer to the Wilfley table. You youngsters that came into the game only 30 years ago or even more recently, with flotation machines and reagents as your very ready tool in time of trouble, do not realize what the invention of the Wilfley table meant to us. We had but one physical property of ores to reckon with-specific gravity- and when there was but little difference in specific gravity between the mineral and the gangue, we were in trouble. The jig and the revolving table were our only mechanical equipment for recovering values and so that we might make even a reasonably satisfactory extraction, we had to classify and reclassify, and jig and rejig, and worry about the laws and advantages of free settling vs hindered settling and just tire the minerals out.

THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

For three years The Hudson Coal Co. has used egg anthracite instead of coke in its foundry cupola. It has long passed the stage of being told it cannot be done—the metal would be cold, of poor quality, or the speed of operation would be low. From observation, from use and from test. we know that our metal is about average; the cast iron invokes no adverse comment from the machine shop and the speed suits our foundry requirements. We have there-iore resolved into practice anthracite combustion processes in an industrial furnace formerly using coke, under conditions suitable to our needs. When it comes to translating what we know into use in another cupola, however, where operating conditions may be different, or to explaining why, with seemingly the same conditions in our own cupola, we have attained sometimes a temperature of 2800° in the metal and at another time 2600°, or a speed of 5 tons per hour against 2 35 tons per hour, we cannot do it. We cannot do this because there seems to be an unbridged gap between laboratory ideas on combustion and practical ideas on com-bustiqn, which we have been unable to cross in terms understandable to us as practical consumers. This gap or bridge centers around the problem of how combustion actually takes place; and we believe it is controlled by two factors: (I) the character of the surface of the fuel and (2) the space provided and needed within which the oxygen of the air is allowed to or can act on that surface. It has long been contended on behalf of coke that porosity is an important factor in combustion, although, admittedly, there are two schools of opposing thought on this question, as revealed in technical literature. It has been understood generally that a light, porous coke is the best metallurgical fuel because there are more square inches of carbon exposed to the blast of air, therefore more useful carbon-dioxide reactions can take place in the given space between the entrance of the air and the point where useful work is done. It is now our general idea that the heavier and the harder the coal, the better the metallurgical fuel, provided the surface of that fuel is suitable for fast reaction with the oxygen. Time and Space A cupola is loaded in layers of fuel and iron. The horizontal line where the first charge of iron rests on the coal is the top of the bed coal. With us that is 22 in., usually, above the tuyeres where the air enters. This means 600 lb. of coal. Every subsequent coal layer is 100 to 125 lb. of coal, and that 100 to 125 lb. of coal melts 1000 lb. of iron at around 2700° in the ladle. This quantity of coal represents a 3-in. layer spread across the cupola. The question arises: If this 3 in. of coal will melt 1000 lb. of metal, why was it necessary to use 600 lb., or 22 in., of coal beneath and between the first charge of iron and the air entrance?

For three years The Hudson Coal Co. has used egg anthracite instead of coke in its foundry cupola. It has long passed the stage of being told it cannot be done—the metal would be cold, of poor quality, or the speed of operation would be low. From observation, from use and from test. we know that our metal is about average; the cast iron invokes no adverse comment from the machine shop and the speed suits our foundry requirements. We have there-iore resolved into practice anthracite combustion processes in an industrial furnace formerly using coke, under conditions suitable to our needs. When it comes to translating what we know into use in another cupola, however, where operating conditions may be different, or to explaining why, with seemingly the same conditions in our own cupola, we have attained sometimes a temperature of 2800° in the metal and at another time 2600°, or a speed of 5 tons per hour against 2 35 tons per hour, we cannot do it. The writer has been interested for some time in trying to appraise our industry&apos;s prospects for gasoline consumption over the next half dozen years or so. Anyone who has even approached the problem knows the intimate relationship to it of the number of automobiles in use— by automobiles I mean both passenger cars and trucks. Probably at least 90 per cent of our gasoline is used in automotive vehicles. A method is outlined for taking into account variation in chemical potential of both components in evaluating capillary effects at growing interfaces. The results are compared with experiment, and seem to be in reasonably good accord for Widman-statten ferrite growing in austenite. ENERY pointed out that during the steady-state growth of phases with a rather small radius of curvature at their advancing edge capillarity cannot be neglected. By proper application of the Laplace equation a correction must be made to the activity gradients down which diffusion occurs. Subsequent workers have concerned themselves with attempts to evaluate specific cases by the use and modification of the principles laid down by Zener.2-5 To solve the problem in its simplest form it is necessary to assume thermodynamic equilibrium at the interface and to select some criterion which will allocate the available free energy between reversible and irreversible processes. Zener chose to assume that the division should be made such that the new phase grew at the maximum rate. Other workers have used the same2,3 or different assumptions, e.g., maximum rate of free-energy dissipation,4 minimum rate of entropy production.5 Li6 has proposed that the "thermokinetic potential" should be a minimum at steady state. The purpose of this presentation is to note that most prior treatments have considered variations due to capillarity only in the chemical potential of the mobile constituent, and that a more consistent treatment must involve a consideration of the variation of chemical potentials of both solute -and sol- vent in a binary system.* As an example, the way in which this arises for ferrite growing from austenite may be illustrated by reference to Fig. l(a). Iron ores occur in such a wide variety of forms that nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge, and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is considered desirable depends on political and economic considerations, on transportation and markets, on the characteristics of the orebody, on the metallurgy of the ore, and on its comparison with other available ores. In North America, materials that can be efficiently processed into high grade concentrates and pellets are now the object of most exploration work. These are usually shallow, relatively unoxidized, metamorphosed iron formations that are particularly suitable for geophysical methods of exploration. Magnetic surveys are used for the direct discovery of new orebodies, for mapping stratigraphy and structure, and at times to locate oxidized zones in magnetic iron formation. Gravity mapping provides supplementary information, indicates gross tonnages, is useful in regional studies, and can discover non-magnetic orebodies. Electrical methods have not been fully exploited but self-potential, resistivity, applied potential, electromagnetic and perhaps induced polarization surveys all have restricted but highly useful applications. The use of all geophysical techniques promises to increase as the number of exposed easily discoverable orebodies decreases. A high consumption of steel, and consequently of iron ore is the chief characteristic of an industrial society and this consumption has been increasing at an average rate of about 35% every ten years for the past century. To supply this demand, iron ores and iron bearing materials in a wide variety of forms have been exploited on every inhabited continent and in nearly every country. Nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is con-
