THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, SO that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location. Sampling Undeveloped Deposits In the case of an undeveloped deposit with a shallow overburden, pitting may be the cheapest way of testing. For thick deposits or deposits with rather heavy overburden, the diamond drill, using a double core barrel, offers the best means of testing. When using the diamond drill in clay testing, it is doubtful whether it pays to take less than 2-in. cores; it is difficult to get complete cores with smaller drills, and the quantity of material obtained with smaller cores is not sufficient for the necessary tests.

AS previously announced, Van. H. Manning has resigned as director of the Bureau of Mines, effective June 1, to become director of research with the newly organized American Petroleum Institute. Doctor Manning has been connected with the Department of the Interior for 34 years, having been civil engineer with the Geological Survey, from 1885 to 1910, previous to his connection with the Bureau of Mines which was organized in the latter year. Doctor Manning was appointed to an administrative position in the new Bureau under Joseph A. Holmes, its first director, and on Jan. 1, 1911, was made assistant director. Usittg a sectioning technique with Agl10 as the tracer, the diffusion of silver in silver-excess (45.8 at. pct Mg), near-stoichiometric (49.8 at. pct Mg), and magnesium-excess (52.0 at. pct Mg) cylinders of CsCl-type AgMg was determined from 500" to 700°C. Diffusion coefficients conform to the expression D = Do exp (-q/RT) where the respective Do values are 1.53, 0.280, and 0.134 sq cm sec-I and the Q values are 41.3, 40.6, and 38.0 kcal g-atom-'. Lnttice-parameter and density measurements were performed on a more numerous assortment and wider range of compositions. Substitutional defects were found on both sides of stoichiometry. Activation energies for other rate processes in these alloys show related trends with changing composition, although silver may not be the rate-detemining species. KNOWLEDGE of diffusion coefficients is necessary for a quantitative understanding of the many rate processes (e.g., grain growth, precipitation, sintering, oxidation, or mechanical deformation) occurring in solids. Although these data are available for most metals and common alloys, they are quite limited for intermetallic compounds—a group of materials whose unique physical and mechanical properties are presently attracting great interest. From a fundamental viewpoint, diffusion in intermetallic compounds also offers several engaging aspects owing to: their ordering, the possibility of introducing large, stable concentrations of lattice defects, and the variety of bonding types and crystal structures which can be found. In the case of CsC1-type compounds, some previous work has been directed at examining the role of vacancy defects by changing their concentration compositionally. The diffusion of Co60 was measured in 0 NiAl1- and in P COA., Except for the results of Smoluchowski and Burgess, isothermal diffusion coefficients were found to pass through a minimum at the stoichiometric composi- they decreased sharply on what was reported by Bradley and co-wrkers' to be the vacancy-rich (aluminum excess) side of stoichiometry. This investigation of the diffusion of Agl110 in AgMg was undertaken both as an adjunct to a concurrent study of its deformation behavior and for the purpose of obtaining information on the influence of lattice defects and temperature on diffusion in another CsC1-type intermetallic compound. Bcc AgMg remains ordered up to and melts congruently at 820°C. Solubility limits at 300°C are about 41 at. pct Mg and 53 at. pct Mg. It is one of the Hume-Rothery electron compounds with a 3/2 electron-atom ratio. Previous investigations of its properties include hardress,' tenile,'-' electrical reistivity, and thermodyna-mic1',14 studies. Indications of a high bonding strength may be found in the large heat of mixing1' and in the 6-pct vol contraction on compound formaticp, as calculated using atomic radii of l.40 and l.55a for Ag and Mg. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by the induction melting of selected fine silver (99.95) and low-iron magnesium (99.95) in magnesia crucibles under 1 atm of A. Supplied by the Handy and Harmon and Dow Chemical Cos., respectivelv. Melts were poured under argon into graphite molds providing 1 1/8-in.-diarn. by 4-in.-long ingots. These were homogenized in evacuated and argon-filled fused-silica capsules by heating for 16 hr at 750'. Three 1 in.-diam. by 3/4-in.-long cylinders were machined from the mid-portion of each ingot for diffusion measurements. Three alloys, analyzing 45.8, 49.8, and 52.0 at. pct Mg were taken as representing the extremes of interest, with 49.8 at. pct Mg being very close to the stoichiometric composition of 50.0 at. pct Mg.

Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, is the owner and operator of the Kidd Creek Mine including the concentrator complex located near Timmins, Ontario. Canada, approximately 450 miles north of Toronto. The mine, concentrator and Timmins form a triangular arrangement with a 17-mile rail link connecting the mine and concentrator and both of these facilities 18 and 14 miles respectively by road from Timmins. A core drilling program in the spring of 1964 established the presence of a large massive sulphide orebody which was to become the Kidd Creek Mine. Texas Gulf Sulphur had been conducting an intensive search for base metal in various parts of Northern Ontario and Quebec since 1957. Of several thousand anomalies detected in airborne electromagnetic surveys, several hundred warranted ground inspection, but only one of more than sixty drilled became a commercial orebody, the Kidd Creek Mine. The geophysical exploration work has been well covered in a paper written and presented by Van Donohoo, presently a Vice-President of T.G.S., at the American Mining Congress in San Francisco in October 1969. GEOLOGY The orebody lies within a series of overturned rhyolitic flows and pyroelastics with a major peridotite intrusive to the east. The hangingwall and footwall are composed chiefly of intermediate volcanics, andesite and dacite. The southern end of the orebody appears to terminate abruptly against greywacke while the north end is bifurcated and the structure obscured.

DURING preliminary tests on the aging of a Cu-plus 5 pct Ag alloy,' a specimen which had been overaged 24 hr at 550°C was annealed in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere first for 2 hr and then for an additional 28 hr at 600°C. After each anneal the specimen was cooled to room temperature in about ½ hr and X-ray photograms were made. The first film, Fig. la, revealed two sets of copper-base lines, one intense and corresponding to the parameter at 550°C, the other fainter and shifted away from the beam, corresponding to the larger parameter at 600°C (see arrows). The 30-hr film, Fig. lb, revealed the same two sets of copper-base lines with a reversal of intensity. In neither case do the copper lines form a broad band which would be indicative of a range of compositions. This phenomenon is thus a "discontinuous" type of solution. A similar phenomenon was observed in a Ag-rich Cu-Ag alloy.' Finlay and Hibbard9 have suggested that directional rather than random solution of precipitate occurs in some alloys. Conceivably, for Cu-Ag alloys, the matrix-transition-precipitate precipitation sequence is reversible for the re-solution of the precipitate caused by rapidly raising the annealing temperature of an overaged specimen. A copper-base transition structure supersaturated with solute might be formed around the precipitate as it dissolves, thus obviating the necessity for a gradually changing solute composition of the matrix. The solute atoms then might be transferred rapidly and locally from the transition to the matrix phase in the proper amount and at the proper location to obtain directly the new ex- panded solid solution. The theory implies a minimum of diEusion of solute in the matrix (i.e., no significant range of matrix composition) and possibly suggests that the composition of the transition structure will vary with the conditions of re-solution. A transition copper phase found in aged Cu-Ag alloys1 might fulfill this function. Evidence regarding this suggestion could be obtained in Cu-Ag alloys by overaging a specimen until no trace of the expanded copper lattice is present and then subjecting the specimen to a retrogression treatment. Re-appearance of the transition copper phase would confirm the theory. Additional details could be secured by varying both aging and retrogression temperatures. References 'H. Margolin and W. R. WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few ears after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained. but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested. but without any illusions that it will be followed or that much attention will be paid to it.

T. H. Alden and R. L. Fleischer (General Electric Research Laboratory)— The authors' results indicate clearly and, we believe, significantly that during tensile deformation the surface layers of an aluminum crystal are hardened more severely than the interior of the crystal. A probable explanation of this effect, as the authors indicate, is that dislocations in the primary slip system may be obstructed at the surface or, it should be added, near the surface. The intent of this discussion is to show that the oxide film on aluminum is not likely to be responsible for this effect, but that the results can be understood if it is assumed the secondary slip is more active in the surface layers than in the interior. Prior study has shown that the principal mechanical effect of an oxide film on a single crystal is to raise the yield stress while leaving the rate of strain hardening during the initial deformation relatively unaffected.33 Since the yield stress is unchanged during polishing in the present case, we conclude that continual removal of the oxide film exerts a small effect on the plastic hardening.* It appears that the hardening interactions are occurring not only at the immediate surface, but to an appreciable depth below it, although with decreasing severity. For example, Kramer and Demer found that with removal of 0.004 in. from a specimen, the easy glide region was extended somewhat; but the yield stress did not decrease. The initial yield stress was recovered only after 0.041 in. was removed. Since a very brief polish would permit dislocations trapped behind a surface film to run out,34 extra dislocations must, instead, be trapped to a considerable depth below the surface. The same conclusion is drawn from the observation of decreasing hardening slope with increasing surface removal rates. If the hardening interactions were only at the immediate surface, a full softening effect would be observed at some small removal rate. The view is taken here that strain hardening is principally caused by small amounts of secondary slip.35 The secondary dislocations will interact in various ways with the primaries, interfering with their motion and causing them to accumulate in the crystal. Prior studies of easy glide have shown Diehl's model of hardening to be qualitatively consistent with the effects of impurities,36 of temperature,36 and of crystal size.37 On this basis the enhanced hardening of the surface layers in aluminum arises from increased secondary slip at and to some depth below the surface. Selective removal of this hardened layer is expected to decrease the measurable "bulk" hardening, the effect increasing with the removal rate and decreasing with the applied strain rate. We suggest that the stress on secondary systems is raised by the bending moments arising from interactions with the grips during the deformation. This stress from the grips has been shown to be a maximum37 near the surface, and hence, increased secondary slip should result. Prior investigations of grip effect:; indicate that as the grip stresses are raised by changing the crystal shape, the easy glide slope increases while the extent of easy glide decreases.38-40 It has been shown also that bending moments superimposed during tensile testing may either decrease easy glide, when supporting the moments caused by gripping, or increase it, when cancelling the gripping moments.38 This interpretation of the authors' results, emphasizing the special importance of secondary slip near the surface, is also consistent with the earlier results of Rosi.41 Copper crystals alloyed with silver in the surface layer show greatly increased easy glide compared with pure copper. In addition, the easy glide slope is reduced. The effect of bulk alloying in extending easy glide has been well established and has been interpreted as indicating the relative difficulty of secondary slip in alloy crystals. Since non-basal glide is difficult in zinc crystals, the effects of surface removal during deformation may be less important. Experiments to test this idea are in progress. I. R. Kramer and L. J. Demer (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Alden and Dr. Fleischer for their discussion. Our interpretation of the data in the paper is that dislocation motion is obstructed by "debris" which starts to form at the surface and extends towards the interior of the crystal with further plastic deformation. The fact that we did not find a reversion from Stage II to Stage I by surface removal shows that in Stage II the "debris" fills the entire cross-section of the specimen. Drs. STOPING methods in which shoveling plays an important part are gradually being replaced by other and cheaper methods. But there will always be considerable shoveling done underground in stopes as well as in drifts, tunnels, urinzes, and shafts. At the mines of the PhelpsDodge Corporation at Tyrone, N. M., the cost of shoveling in all stopes in 1917 amounted to 24c. per T. In the top-slice stopes for the same period, it cost 27 c. per T. or 16 per cent, of the total cost of these stopes. The tonnage for shovelers from all stoping was 9.3 T. per man, and for topslicing 8.2 T. per man. These stopes were not unduly hot, and there was not more than the usual amount of timber to interfere with the work of the men. The tonnages obtained per shoveler were considered low; first, because of a poor grade of Mexican labor, many of the men having come in from railroad grading camps; and second, because of a poor spacing of raises, especially in the top-slice stopes, where, in general, they were spaced 25 ft. by 66 ft. (7.6 by 20.1 m.) centers. The average wage per laborer shift was $2.67 during the year. It was thought, however, that even under these conditions the men were not producing the tonnage that they should, so, with the consent of the management, the writer undertook to determine how the general efficiency of the underground shoveling could be improved. No predetermined plan for conducting these experiments was arranged because we had no definite ideas as to the scope of the work or the number of elements into which the investigation would resolve itself, before all of its phases could be determined. We were sure, however, that any work that would thoroughly cover the ground would have to be in the nature of a systematic time study, combined with a course of instruction in correct shoveling methods and adequate and intelligent supervision of the work. Two or three companies in the Southwest have done some work to determine the proper shovel to be used undcrground, but so far as is known the work has been limited to equipping certain parts of their mines with a particular type and size of shovel and thereafter watching the cost and efficiency records. In each case it seems to have been the shovel that held the 21-lb. (9.5-kg.) load that gave the bcst results. Excepting personal communications from these companies, the only data available on scientific shoveling are contained in F. W. Taylor's book, "The Principles of Scientific Management," and D. J. Haucr's article, in The Contractor for March 29, 1918, "A Hundred Hints for Shovelers." This paper discusses and draws conclusions from several thousand time-study readings, taken both on the surface and in the mines for nearly a year. A sufficient number of readings were taken on each factor in the problem for the plotting of curves of the performances and to obtain accurate indices of the work to be expected from this class of labor. The work is not as complete in all of its details as we would like to havc it, because we were forced to stop the work temporarily, owing to the numbcr of men going into the National service and our inability to get others who could make time studies. The results obtained so far, however, have been of such a startling nature that we have decided to submit them at this time, subject to future modification. It is hoped, also, that a free discussion of this paper will lead to a disclosure of any errors that may have becn embodied and offer some valuable suggestions for the conduct of future work.

Four alloys that precipitate the alpha phase from the beta of the copper-zinc system were heat-treated in various ways to develop as many forms of the segregate as possible. It was found that the precipitate may have the form either of plates or of needles. Plates usually result when precipitation occurs at low temperatures and needles when precipitation takes place at high temperatures. The needles tend to align themselves along certain planes in the matrix and to coalesce into plnte-like structures. The two phases were found to be related so that a (111) plane and [Oil] direction of the precipitate are parallel to a 10111 plane and 11111 direction of the matrix. DISCUSSION (E. A. (Written discussion).—Tllis report by Dr. Marzke covers completely all possible heat treatinents over a considerable range of compositiol~s in which a1pha precipitates from beta brass, and may be said to complete the Inctallographic part of this problern The lining up of ncedles of segregate to form plates, espeeially as shown in Fig. 5, appears to he regular, although the author's frequency plot in Fig. 11 makes it appear rather irregular. Has the author attempted anY correlation between some of the major dircetions and the oricntntaion of the parent grain as determined by X-ray analysis? Also, in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the cross-sections of the needles appear to be straightsided and regular. Have these directions been correlated with the matrix latttice? Dr. Mnrzkr 's method of interpretation of the orientation rclationships between the alpha. and beta phases is a bit uncertain and seems to wed more explanation. If this relationship, as staited is such that :L (1111 plane and a [I 10] direction of that plane in the precipitate is parallel to a. {110} p1ane and a [111] direction of that, plane in the matrix, there mill be a maximum of 24 possible orientations of the alpha phase within a. single grain of the beta phasc. This relationship is expressed strercographical1y in Fig. 13, ill which the locations of a11 of the alpha {111} poles for the 24 orientations of alpha me given. Fig. 12 chccks fairly closely with this thcoretical plot,. with a few exeeptions which may be due to the inaceuracy inherent in the method used by the anthor in determining the orientations of the segregates. The method might have been refined somewhat had corrections been made for the displacement of the slip p1ancs upon deformation.

The variation of elastic modulus with terrzperature between -150° and 600°C has been investigated. Compounds close to equiatomic cornposition exhibit very low modulus values and very high damping near room temperature. The modulus rises steeply with both decreasing and increasing temperature. The modulus minimum and the high damping are believed to be connected with a martensitic transformation of TiNi. In bulk material this transition takes place slightly above room temperature quite rapidly and reversibly, with a hysteresis of some 30°C, depending on the Ti:Ni ratio. Oxygen impurity affects the reaction time. THE inter metallic compound TiNi has been reported to exist in an ordered CsCl (B2) structure,l-6 the homogeneity range varying rather markedly with temperature.7 Some investigators reported this compound to decompose peritectoidally to Ti2Ni and TiNi, between 650° and 800°C,3 or below,',g the latter workers also suggesting the decomposition to be strain-sensitive. Purdy and Parr were the first to report a structural transformation to a new, possibly hexagonal, structure at 36°C,7 a temperature indubitably too low to allow the significant amount of diffusion necessary for a peritectoid reaction. Mechanical-property investigations of compositions close to TiNi just above room temperature have qualitatively shown remarkable anomalies, particularly with respect to clamping,' and to a "memory" effect, that is, plastically deformed material returning to its original shape on being heated through the "decomposition" temperature.9 The original explanation of this effect—based on the apparent experimental observation of Ti2Ni or TiNi, formation in the material subjected to tensile or compressive stresses, respectivelp—does not appear plausible. It appeared more probable that the change involved may be a martensitic, diffusionless structural transformation, similar to those observed in other B2 structures such as 0 brass,'' AuCd,ll and AuZn.12 The existence of such transformation has been established recently,', although the symmetry of the low-temperature structure is not yet known. The present paper describes the elastic modulus and damping behavior of polycrystalline TiNi in both structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. All the specimens to be investigated were prepared from premelted electrolytic nickel and iodide titanium by nonconsumable arc melting and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. The cast billets were canned in mild steel, extruded, and swaged to approximately 0.375 in. diam. The cans were then removed by pickling or machining. Preliminary material balance checks indicated no significant weight losses on melting (less than 5 mg on a 50-g button); hence nominal compositions have been used throughout. In agreement with previously reported observations7 no single-phase material was obtained at—or close to—Ti 1.00 Ni1.00 a small amount of finely divided second phase always being present. It was found that most of the oxygen impurity was associated with this minor phase, which was identified as oxygen-bearing Ti2Ni—possibly Ti,Ni,O. IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,' the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. At the meeting of this Institute in February 1933,I presented a paper on potash development in southeastern New Mexico1, which contained a brief review of the Geological Survey's 20-year search for commercial sources of soluble potash minerals and of the events that led to the discovery, exploration, and first development of the deposits in that state. AS a more comprehensive review of the subject was published in December2, the present paper is intended only to discuss recent developments in the domestic potash industry, particularly in New Mexico. A summary of the findings of potash in the Permian Basin, by G. R. Mansfield and W. B. Lang, geologists of the United States Geological Survey, is now in process of publication by the University of Texas and will be omitted from this paper. In New Mexico prospecting for potassium salts during the past two years has increased materially the known area of commercial deposits; development has resulted in an increase from one to three in the number of shafts and the starting of a fourth; an increase of annual productive capacity to 1,000,000 tons of crude salts, or 250,000 tons of K2O; and an increase in annual refining capacity to 140,000 tons of muriate of 62.5 per cent grade. Construction has been completed to increase still further the production of high-grade salts. In California the American Potash & Chemical Co., operating on Searles Lake brines, has increased its plant capacity from about 100,000 tons to 180,000 tons of muriate a year and is now producing soda ash and salt cake in addition to potash and borax. Potash production from cement-plant and industrial-alcohol wastes remains unimportant.

At the meeting of this Institute in February 1933,I presented a paper on potash development in southeastern New Mexico1, which contained a brief review of the Geological Survey's 20-year search for commercial sources of soluble potash minerals and of the events that led to the discovery, exploration, and first development of the deposits in that state. AS a more comprehensive review of the subject was published in December2, the present paper is intended only to discuss recent developments in the domestic potash industry, particularly in New Mexico. A summary of the findings of potash in the Permian Basin, by G. R. Mansfield and W. B. Lang, geologists of the United States Geological Survey, is now in process of publication by the University of Texas and will be omitted from this paper. In New Mexico prospecting for potassium salts during the past two years has increased materially the known area of commercial deposits; development has resulted in an increase from one to three in the number of shafts and the starting of a fourth; an increase of annual productive capacity to 1,000,000 tons of crude salts, or 250,000 tons of K2O; and an increase in annual refining capacity to 140,000 tons of muriate of 62.5 per cent grade. Construction has been completed to increase still further the production of high-grade salts. In California the American Potash & Chemical Co., operating on Searles Lake brines, has increased its plant capacity from about 100,000 tons to 180,000 tons of muriate a year and is now producing soda ash and salt cake in addition to potash and borax. Potash production from cement-plant and industrial-alcohol wastes remains unimportant.

DIFFUSION coefficients of Hf181 in the high-tem-perature bcc phase of reactor-grade hafnium were determined at temperatures of 1795° to 1995°C by standard lathe-sectioning techniques. The temperature dependence of the data may be described by an Arrhenius-type expression for this limited temperature interval. However, hafnium is classed with the "anomalous" bcc metals zirconium, titanium, and y uranium by the low values of Do and Q observed in this study. The hafnium metal was received as 1/2-in.-diameter crystal bar. Analyses by the Analytical Chemistry Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory showed the major impurity to be zirconium— about 2.1 pct. The total interstitial content was about 225 ppm with 190 ppm of this oxygen. The Hf"' was supplied as HfC12 in HC1 solution by the Isotopes Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The hafnium bar was cut into disk-shaped specimens 3/8 in. long. One of the flat faces of each specimen was metallographically treated and then the isotope was deposited by vacuum evaporation from a tungsten filament. A 3 by 3 in. NaI (Tl) crystal with a single-channel analyzer was used for counting y rays with energies of 0.3 to 0.7 Mev. The as-deposited layers of isotope had counting rates of about 200 counts per sec. Specimens were annealed in argon in a tantalum resistance furnace. Temperatures were measured with a microoptical pyrometer calibrated for the particular furnace sighting conditions. All sectioning was done by standard lathe techniques. Section weights were determined on a semimicrobalance. A density of 12.5 g per cu cm was used in determinations of section thicknesses. Activities associated with the various sections were measured and the penetration data were treated using the computer code by winslow.' In all cases, except for specimens annealed at temperatures below 1795°C, normal Gaussian penetration behavior resulted. THE tests here described were made to obtain information regarding costs, efficiency, etc. of baking cores in an oil-fired oven, and two electric ovens, which were installed, early in 1920, in the core room of The Ohio Brass Co. and were used almost continuously during the rest of that year. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three are equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which are lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the electric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 cm.) wide, 83 in. (210 cm.) high, and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed in, panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 4 3/16 in. (10.6 cm.) thick, packed with blocks of insulating material and covered with sheet iron. The concrete floor on which the ovens set is 13 in. (33 cm:) thick. A recess about 5 in. (13 cm.) deep was cut in the floor to provide room for the heating units. Channels and plates supported. on I beams serve as' supports for the trucks and racks. The ventilating system consists of a Sirroco No. 1 ½ fan, connected so as to draw air from the top of the-oven or from the room, through damper C, and to deliver it either to the bottom of the oven or to the floor; the delivery is controlled by the vane A. The fan and pipes are covered with ¼ n. (6.3 mm.) asbestos cement lagging.

The phase relationships of the MnTe-MnS system were studied by DTA procedures. There is an eutectic at 810°C with about 10 mole pct MnS-90 mole pct MnTe. An eutectoid occurs at about 710°C with approximately 7 mole pct MnS where the MnTe(NaCl) solid solution dissociates on cooling to MnTe(NiAs) and MnS. There is very little solid solubility of MnTe in MnS. ALTHOUGH MnS may exist in three different crystal forms,' only the NaC1-type phase is stable.2 Above 1040°C, MnTe also has the cubic NaC1-type structure. Below that temperature, MnTe changes to the NiAs-type structure.3 This phase transition is rapid for both heating and cooling. As a result the high-temperature crystal form of MnTe cannot be retained at room temperature. Because MnO, MnS, and MnSe are all stable with the NaC1-type structure, and MnTe has this structure at high temperatures,4 solid solution formation could be expected among these compounds. It is interesting to note, however, that a complete series of solid solutions exist only in the MnS-MnSe system,' and that the solid solution is quite limited in the MnO-MnS system.' The MnSe-MnTe system possesses a complete series of solid solutions at high temperatures with separation at lower temperatures.7 Although ion size may be critical in the miscibility of MnO-MnS, it is quite possible that the bond type plays a more important role with the miscibility of MnSe-MnTe. This would permit us to speculate that the miscibility gap would be extensive in the MnTe-MnS system. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation. The samples were prepared by mixing and compacting MnTe and MnS powders. The MnS was previously prepared through the sulfur reduction of Mnso4.8 The MnTe had been prepared by mixing and compacting double vacuum distilled metallic manganese and high-purity tellurium in stoichiometric ratio modified with 1 wt pct excess tellurium. The compacted powders were put in a graphite crucible which was sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The free space in the vycor tube was made minimal to reduce the loss of tellurium. The sealed assembly was then heated slowly to about 500° C where the free manganese and tellurium reacted vigorously, melting the MnTe which formed. Only one phase, MnTe, was detected by X-ray powder patterns and metallographic techniques. Each compact of MnTe-MnS was placed in a graphite crucible and then sealed in an evacuated vycor tube. The samples were heated at 1250°C for 4 hr and furnace-cooled. Microscopic examination revealed no third phase beyond MnS and MnTe. A typical microstructure is presented in Fig. 1. Identification. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using 114.6 mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Fe-Ka radiation. Mixtures of cubic MnS and hexagonal MnTe were observed in all of the compositions prepared. No lattice parameter change was noticed among different compositions, indicating no solid solution could be retained at room temperatures between these two end-members. A lattice parameter of 5.244Å for MnS was obtained by the Nelson and Riley9 extrapolation method using the diffraction lines of (h2 + k2 + 12) equal 12, 16, 20, and 24. The values, a = 4.145Å and c = 6.708Å, for hexagonal MnTe were obtained from the (006) and (220) lines in the back-reflection region. These values agree well with the values reported by Taylor and Kag1e.10 Differential Thermal Analysis. A differential thermal analysis procedure was used to determine phase relationships since the high-temperature equilibrium conditions could not be retained for examination at room temperature, even when the sealed samples (~0.5 g) were quenched in water. The samples were sealed in an evacuated 4 mm vycor tube with a recess in the bottom to accept a thermocouple. An Al2O3 reference was similarly prepared and the two placed within a piece of insulating fire brick to dampen spurious temperature changes within the furnace. The furnace was controlled by a mechanically driven rheostat which increased the temperature at a rate of about 15°C per min. Known phase changes in the Pb-Sn system1' and the a-to-ß quartz inversion12 were used for calibration

At the Gateway Coal Co.'s mine, about 70 miles above Pittsburgh's Point on the Monongahela River, a battery of television cameras stands guard over what is billed as the longest conveyor belt system ever installed in a coal mine. In all, this system consists of 9% miles of 42- in. and 48-in. wide belting, and is capable of transporting 500 tph at a speed of 625 fpm from working face to the tipple located outside the mine. Gateway Coal, located near Waynesburg, Pa., is owned jointly by Jones & Laughlin. Steel Corp. (64% %), Pittsburgh Steel Co. (22lh%), and Shenango Inc. (13%). Managed by J & L, the mine is under a long-term lease from the Hillman Coal and Coke Co., which formerly operated it as the Emerald mine. Hillman produced 700,000 tons per year of metallurgical-grade coal from this mine, but since J & L et al. took over in 1962, annual output has increased to 1.7 million tons. Mine capacity will reach its peak early in 1964 when total production hits an annual rate of 3.1 million tons.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates back to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal development has taken place during the last 30 years. To Stephen R. Krom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contribution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the movable roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springs, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. It has remained, however, for the boldness and originality of Mr. Edison to extend the field of crushing-rolls in two new directions, and to cause them to exercise new functions. In developing crushing-machinery for his Portland cement works, Mr. Edison constructed ? giant " rolls, having a diameter of 6 ft. and a length of. face of 7 ft.
