IN May, 1878, I had the honor of presenting to the Institute, at the Chattanooga meeting, some observations upon the heat of the Comstock Lode, and since then the subject has attracted some attention and criticism, in the course of which, I have observed errors of apprehension which I beg leave to correct now. Mr. John Arthur Phillips discussed it before the Geological Society, his paper being printed in the Quarterly Journal for August, 1879.* His criticism is based upon that part of my paper in which I quote a number of analyses of the mine waters, to illustrate the fact that the heat does not come from the oxidation of pyrite. The annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary was held on February 19, at 10 a. m. The president, Mrs. Sidney Jennings, said in her greeting "it is a matter of congratulation that during the past year when the demands upon women for work of all kinds has been so large our membership has grown from the 50 enrolled at the first meeting a year ago to over 300 today. Some women, when. asked to join the organization, say that they are doing so much work in other ways that they have no time for work in a new organization, but the director for Canada struck the right note in her report when she told us of the splendid work the wives of mining engineers are doing in Canada, as individuals and as leaders and members of various organizations doing patriotic work. We do not want to divert such women from the work they are now doing, but we do want them to enroll as members of the Woman's Auxiliary and let us know what they are doing, that they play give inspiration to others." Reports were made by the directors of the following sections: Canada, Chicago, Colorado, Columbia, New York, Puget Sound and St. Louis, in some of which sections excellent progress has been made in food conservation, foreign war relief, including the adoption of fatherless French children, and in work for our own engineering regiments. These reports were read, accepted, and placed on file. The reports of the corresponding secretary, of the recording secretary, and of the treasurer, were read, accepted, and placed on file. Various amendments to the Constitution were proposed and accepted, and copies of the Constitution, as amended, will be mailed to all the members of the Woman's Auxiliary.

DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.'.' Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Geologically, the coastal area is of sedimentary origin, having been built up gradually under the sea by deposition of material carried down by large streams to their deltas. The amount of coal used in the Colonies before the Revolutionary War was very small, and few records of it can be found, these all being in the Public Records Office in London. The exports and imports for the years 1768 to 1772, inclusive, are shown in Table 3, which apparently do not include the early shipments from the Virginia field. For the three years 1769 to 1771, the imports from Great Britain-their only source-totalled 17,943 tons, or an average of 5,981 tons per year. If the shipments from Richmond for the same period were available, this average would probably not exceed 6,800 tons per year. In Table 4 the shipments of coal from the James River ports for the period 1758 to 1769 are shown. A few of them are re-exports of coal brought from England, but the great majority are undoubtedly of coal produced in Virginia, and the movement was partly to West Indian ports but mainly to Atlantic ports from Baltimore to Portsmouth, N. H. (Piscataway). In Table 5 the data in Tables 3 and 4 are combined, the exports being deducted, and this summarizes all the available data on the amount of coal consumed in the Colonies before the separation from England. As has already been stated there has been a tremendous amount of work done in the Richmond field over a long period of time, many mines were opened and in some cases operated for years, and practically no accurate data remain or have been published to show what was done. There are undoubtedly manuscripts still remaining that will contribute to much of the knowledge of this field, and it is well worth the while of the proper state authorities to collect all the information that can be found anywhere, to enable the future development of these coal deposits to benefit by the record of what was done in the past. Table 22 shows all the methods of shipment from this field, and all of the data available about tonnages moved over each of them. The shipments by the Chesterfield and Clover Hill Railroads are largely duplicated in some of the other columns, but allowance has been made for this in the estimated totals. In addition to the difficulties experienced with similar data for the other states, these Virginia records have one peculiarly their own; it was the custom to allow 5 pecks to the bushel of coal at the pit and only 4 pecks at the docks or at vessel side. In most of the figures it is not stated to which point they apply, and a considerable error may exist due to this cause, although certainly it does not apply to all of them. The notes show the sources of the figures used, and while it is probable that the totals are lower than the actual amounts produced, the data given are the most complete that can now be assembled.

Laboratory and pilot plant studies showed that supergrade iron ore concentrates (containing less than 2% SiO2) can be made from standard grade magnetic iron ore products by cationic silica flotation. Continuous tests were run using various flowsheet arrangements. whereby (1) super and standard grade products were made simultaneously or (2) only a superconcentrate was produced. After a caustic scrub and desliming pretreatment, the silica in a magnetic taconite concentrate was reduced to 1.8% SiO2 by amine flotation. Approximately 75% of the iron was recovered in the single flotation stage, and by additional beneficiation 95% of the total iron was ultimately recovered,

This paper presents the hypothesis that solid-solution hardening of regions in the order of tens of angstroms thick along grain boundaries is the most important mechanism controlling the ductile -brittle transition behavior of poly crystalline bcc refractory metals. Further, a physical model is developed and a general equation is derived to describe the dependence of the solute concentration at grain boundaries on temperature, nominal impurity concentration, thermal treatments, vain size, and prior plastic deformation. Analytical curves of the solute concentration at grain boundaries us temperature, calculated by means of the derived equation, are found to have the same general form as curves of ductility us temperature plotted from experimental data. Senziquantitative relationships between the transition temperature and metallurgical variables can he determined by using the physical model. The room-temperature brittleness of the poly-crystalline refractory metals (tungsten, molybdenum, and chromium) is a result of their high ductile-brittle transition temperatures. Recently studies on single crystals have revealed that, when sufficiently pure, these crystals have much lower transition temperatures than polycrystalline specimens of similar purity.'-3 For example, the transition temperature (measured by reduction in area in tensile tests) for very high-purity tungsten crystals has been reported to be as low as -50°F whereas polycrystalline specimens of similar purity had a transition temperature near 400" ~.' These results suggest that the ductile-brittle transition behavior of these polycrystalline metals can be attributed principally to the influence of grain boundaries on plastic flow and fracture. This paper contains a discussion of the manner in which grain boundaries influence the ductility of the poly-.crystalline bcc refractory metals and proposes that the segregation of impurities to grain boundaries is the most important mechanism for controlling the ductile-brittle transition behavior of these metals. Further, this paper contains an analysis of the effect of the compositional and structural variables on the grain boundary-ductility relationship, and introduces a semiquantitative model that can provide a foundation for more theoretical treatment to describe the influence of these variables on ductile-brittle transition behavior. PHYSICAL MODEL FOR PREDICTING DUCTILE-BRITTLE TRANSITION BEHAVIOR Grain Boundary Segregation of Impurities. Based on their own observations and on theoretical grounds, numerous investigators have suggested that impurities segregate to the grain boundaries. Such segregation would be expected because regions exist where both large and small foreign atoms fit with less strain than within the undistorted crystal structure. Therefore, the concentration of impurities should be higher at boundaries than within the grain body. TO estimate the degree (i.e., the ratio of grain boundary to nominal bulk concentration) to which an interstitial solute tends to segregate at boundaries within a solvent metal, the solubility rather than the size misfit could be used as a guide because solubility expresses the joint effect of both elastic and electronic factors.5 The solubilities of interstitial elements such as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen are low in the group V-A metals and very low in the group VI-A metals.6 These low solubilities suggest that segregation to grain boundaries should occur for each of these solutes in both refractory metal groups. The difference between the ductility of single-crystal and polycrystalline bcc refractory metals can be described in terms of two distinct effects.4 The first of these is the general observation that grain boundaries hinder slip within grains and slip transfer between grains, and the second is that deformation is more complex in each grain of a polycrystalline specimen than it is in a single crystal. Mc Lean has pointed out, furthermore, that strong slip-hindrance effects at grain boundaries should occur in metals having strong segregation of impurities to grain boundaries. Therefore, the effect of grain boundaries on the hindrance of slip is expected to be the dominating influence on the ductile-brittle transition behavior of these polycrystalline refractory metals. cahn5 has suggested that temperature and solute mobility should influence solute equilibrium segregation at grain boundaries, and Fig. 1 illustrates

At the Tenth International Geological Congress, Mexico, 1906, Waldemar Lindgren presented "The Relation of Ore Deposition to Physical Conditions." Retrospect ranks it as the outstanding offering at that Session and as the most fundamental contribution up to that date on the philosophy of ore deposition. Elaborating thereon in his text-book "Mineral Deposits," Lindgren analyzed ore-forming processes under conditions prevailing from great depth up to surface; explained the nature of deposition in each environment; and developed a comprehensive genetic ore classification, which brought wide acceptance and enriching contributions by many. Since Lindgren's latest edition (1933), have come wealths of material relevant to ore genesis, particularly through amazing renaissance and proliferation throughout science. Current publication regarding ores now emanates largely from a generation caught in pressures of the breathless modern tempo, which tempts scant reflection upon earlier truths. Consequently, today's thrilling output contains not a few offerings that need challenge because supplanting interrelationship and system by what seems, collectively, an assemblage of strange, ad hoc and often self-contradictory concepts. From these latter some merit may eventuate but at the probable cost of present confusion and delayed progress. The following pages, naming numerous post-Lindgren advances, record the conviction, held by many, that Lindgren's philosophy, progressively improved, remains the soundest approach to understanding ore genesis.

THE development of the reverberatory furnace for smelting copper ores up to 1912 was described by E. P. Mathewson1 with details concerning the great changes in dimensions of the furnace. Hayward2 tabulated similar data, giving developments up to about 1924, in his revision of Hofman's Metallurgy of Copper. DEVELOPMENT OF PRESENT SMELTING PRACTICE Dimensions of Furnace Very great changes were made in the dimensions of the smelting hearths of the furnaces in the period from about 1800 to 1906, the length increasing from about 11 to 116 ft., and the width from 8 to 19 ft. During this time the tonnage smelted increased from about 9 to 250 tons per 24 hr., and the tons of charge smelted per ton of coal increased from 0.77 to 4.3. Dr. Mathewson3 noted no great difference in the "fuel ratio" (i. e., the amount of charge smelted per ton of coal) as the furnace at Anaconda was increased in length by stages from 85 to 116 ft. (The percentage of copper in the slag, however, was lowered from 0.42 to 0.36 per cent. The other components of the slag were not given.) Lump coal fired on grates was the fuel used during this period. The practice in operating the furnaces over such a length of time naturally varied considerably, and there were differences in composition and nature of the charge, yet it may be considered that the improvements made were due largely to increases in the size of the furnace used. Doubt-less some credit should be given to improvements in operating technique, like changes in the methods of firing the lump coal. However, the greater part of the advance was probably due to factors influencing the

"The Butte, Anaconda & Pacific railway extends from Butte to Anaconda. The electrification comprises 30 miles of main line single track, and includes sidings, yard and smelter tracks. When complete the electrified trackage will total about 90 miles on a single track basis.The traffic conditions are unusually severe as they consist principally of hauling copper ore from the Butte mines to the smelters at Anaconda, as well as hauling all the mine supplies, lumber, etc., in both directions; this traffic amounts to approximately 5,000,000 tons of freight per year. The maximum grade against the load is .3 per cent and the maximum train consists of 50 loaded steel ore cars, weighing 3,400 tons. .The locomotive units, two of which will be used for freight trains, weigh approximately 80 tons each. In addition to the freight business, there will be a certain amount of passenger traffic.The power for operating the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific railway is generated by, the Great Falls Power company, and is transmitted to the sub-stations at 100,000 volts. The synchronous motors are supplied with power at a potential of 2,300 volts, 60 cycles, 3-phase. Voltage regulators are installed in each sub¬station to secure the benefit of synchronous condenser effect of the motors.The passenger and freight locomotives are exactly similar, with the exception of the gearing.The roller pantograph mounted on the top of the cab is operated by air from the engineers position.The adoption of the 2,400-volt apparatus for so important a system, where the conditions of operation are so severe, is interesting of itself, as indicating the trend that future electrifications of importance may follow. A trolley potential of 2,400 volts was only adopted after a thorough investigation of other systems already in operation."

A series of wedges of 1020 steel (2 1/2 by 6 by 8 in.) were explosively loaded, as shown in Fig. 1. A slab of explosive on the surface of the steel wedge was initiated simultaneously along one edge, producing an essentially two-dimensional oblique shock in the metal. Pressure and density in the metal were measured as a function of distance from the explosive-metal interface by a method described elsewhere.' While for pressures below 130 .kbars the technique produces accurate results, for greater pressures the presence of two shock waves in the metalzy3 makes interpretation of the data uncertain. However, the location of the transition in pressure at 130 kbars can be readily identified from the data. The assumption of a single shock in the region above 130 kbars overestimates the pressure computed on a multiple-shock model. After firing, the wedges were sectioned, lapped, and etched with 2 pct Nital. A photograph of an etched specimen is shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were examined metallographically. The dark region, at the top of the specimen, was heavily banded, Fig. 3, while the lighter area was comparatively free from banding, Fig. 4, the boundary between the two regions being quite abrupt. The very light regions at an angle of about 45 deg to the explosive-metal interface show virtually no banding. The origin of these light regions, which are not Luder's bands, is not yet explained. The thickness of the heavily banded area was measured and compared with the pressure at the boundary between the heavily and lightly banded regions. The results of these measurements and calculations are given in Table I. For all shots, the pressure at the boundary is approximately the same

It seems unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remark-able operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to analyze theoretically the partisl-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9° Be. North Texas crude. The chart is illustrative of batch distillation. Theoretically, if the oil were heated by a single flash in a pipe still, the partial-pressure effect of the light products would result in the removal of the same amount of vapors at a lower temperature. Practically, we find that because of the necessarily extensive fractionating equipment required when separating many products all in vapor phase, the oil has to enter the separator at temperatures corresponding to or even above those required in the batch still. Furthermore, in single-flash distillation the vapors evolved in the heater must be superheated to the outlet temperature. Very little is

ARCHEOLOGISTS, by use of the terms Bronze Age and Iron Age, indicate that metals have in the past determined the character of civilization. The relatively simple discovery by a primitive metallurgist that the addition of tin to copper both facilitated the production of castings and increased the durability of the product enabled hunter, warrior, and housewife alike to do things never dreamed of before. Similarly, the smelting of iron and the discovery of hardening methods greatly changed the arts of peace and war. Discoveries of low-melting-point alloys for joining and for making household utensils, and perhaps the adornment of a feminine form by sparkling precious-metal jewelry, have at times changed the destiny of a country. Bronze cannon, the cast and wrought iron Watt engine, copper transmission lines, and aluminum alloy aircraft, are cases of particular metals making possible the realization of an improved engineering design. Perhaps of the greatest influence of all upon civilization was the development of type metal. The rapid increase in the rate of dissemination of knowledge dates from the day that the technique of the pewterer was utilized in making rapidly reproducible and accurately sized letters for printing. It was not movable type, but metal type that was important, for metal castings could be made of identically the same shape and size at an enormous rate, and possessed excellent inking and wearing characteristics.

Study of the normal interaction between flotation collectors and the silicates through measurement of the electrokinetic potential carried out by the streaming potential and flotation recovery methods indicates that the interaction is wholly 07 partly of electrostatic origin. In some cases, it partly consists of the chemical affinity of the polar head of the collector for the active surface sites. Reagents composed of a polar head and a paraffinic chain and forming micelles in solution were used as flotation collectors. They are sodium dodecylsulfate (anionic collector) and dode-cylammonium chloride (cationic collector). The adsorption isotherms on biotite of alkylamine chloride having 10 to 18 carbon atoms in their chain all show a sharp change in slope relevant to the condensation of alkylammonium ions into bidimensional phase.1-1 Condensation is possible because of the relative homogeneity of the adsorbing surface and of the very strong lateral binding forces through Van der Waals type bonds in the adsorption layer. The different isotherms are seen to coincide when, instead of the equilibrium concentration, the under-saturation ?µ = kT In C/C, is plotted in abscissa, C representing the concentration of the solution with which the adsorbed layer is in equilibrium and C, the saturation concentration of micelles in solution or. critical micellar concentration. More particularly, the undersaturation ?,u1*, corresponding to a surface coverage 6 of 0.5, is equal to Since silicates immersed in aqueous solutions show a surface charge which is a function of pH, it is of primary importance to study the influence of this parameter on the adsorption of collector ions acting as Strong electrolytes in the pH range where they are utilized. The aim of this present paper is to determine by studying electrokinetic phenomena and recovery curves effectuated with a cationic collector and a anionic collector, the nature of the normal adsorbate-adsorbent interaction. Tables 1 and 2 sum up part of the results previously obtained'H11 for the determination of the point of zero charge of the silicate studied by the streaming potential method. THE practical importance of the phenomena of melting and freezing must have been recognized for a very long time. The difference between ice and water, for example, has had a profound influence on the history of mankind and the evolution of society. The possibility of melting a metal and allowing it to freeze in a mold of chosen shape has been an essential ingredient in our mastery of the art of shaping metals, and therefore in the evolution of the: machine age in which we find ourselves. The importance of melting and freezing, as applied to metals and alloys, has been so great, in fact, that empirical solutions have been found for the multitude of practical problems that have arisen. This approach has been so successful that relatively little attention has been directed to arriving at an understanding of the fundamentals of the processes. But metallurgy has come to a stage at which we may expect that some, at least, of the more complex problems that have not yet been solved (or perhaps even recognized) may be handled more effectively by scientific study, theoretical understanding, and logical experimentation than by trial and error. In this lecture, therefore, I propose to describe in outline what I think really happens when a metal freezes. In doing so I hope to explain many of the phenomena which have been observed, and in particular to account for the structures that are obtained in actual ingots and castings. The basic problem, to which this lecture represents a tentative partial answer, is this: a mass of metal, containing known proportions of various elements, is melted, heated to a given temperature, and then allowed to freeze under specified conditions. What will be the "structure" of the resulting metal? The term structure includes: 1—crystal size, shape, and orientations, 2—distribution of chemical elements, and 3-—shape, including cracks, cavities, pores, etc. The Solid-Liquid Interface We will first consider what takes place if a single crystal of a metal in the form of a rod is heated, not uniformly, but so that one end is hotter than the other. If this heating process is continued long enough, the hotter end will eventually melt; we will suppose that the rod is in a containing vessel so that the molten metal does not run away, Fig. 1. When some of the metal has melted, we have some solid, some liquid, and an interface or surface of contact between them. If the source of heat is now removed, the interface will move so that some of the liquid freezes, and if the supply of heat is suitably adjusted the interface will remain at rest. This very simple arrangement allows us to study the basic processes of melting and freezing, and if we fully understand this simple case, we may be able to account for what takes place under practical conditions where the heat does not all flow in the same direction, and where the heat flow is determined not by a controllable source of heat but by the heat capacity and temperature of metal and mold, and by the heat loss from the mold surface. The solid-liquid interface is evidently the region of the greatest interest to us; on one side of it there is crystalline solid, and on the other, liquid. In the solid, each atom has a well defined position, around which it vibrates as a result of thermal agitation. It only leaves this position in the relatively rare event of a "diffusion jump." The liquid is much less systematically organized. The atoms are about as far from their neighbors as in the solid, but the arrangement is much less systematic and is continuously changing. The solid and the liquid are represented diagrammatically in Fig. 2. The average energy of the atoms in the liquid is greater than in the solid by an amount that corresponds to the latent heat of fusion, i.e., the amount of heat that has to be supplied to convert unit mass of solid into liquid at the same temperature. The Two Processes As has recently been shown by Jackson and Chalmers,3 many of the features of the processes of freezing and melting can be understood if it is assumed that a continuous and rapid interchange of atoms between solid and liquid always takes place at a solid-liquid interface." INTRODUCTION THIS investigation of bismuth-selenium alloys was made in an attempt to find a suitable material for use in thermoelectric generators. These devices are simply thermocouple circuits designed for the efficient production of electrical energy from thermal energy, which may in turn be derived directly from solar radiation or from the combustion of fuels. The requirements of a material for use in a thermoelectric generator are obviously quite different from those of a material used in a temperature-measuring thermocouple. Naturally, for power generating purposes, the thermoelectric power (voltage produced per degree difference in temperature between the junctions) must be as high as possible. Furthermore, in order to obtain reasonably high power outputs, the materials used in the generator must have an electrical conductivity which is as high as possible. Finally, in order to minimize heat lost by conduction to the cold junction, the thermal conductivity must be as low as possible. The relation between these several factors and the efficiency of conversion of thermal into electrical energy-the thermoelectric efficiency-has been discussed by Telkes1 in a recent review of the subject. She gives the thermoelectric efficiency as: [ ] For many materials, some of the desired properties (for example, high electrical and low thermal conductivity) are almost mutually exclusive; the problem thus becomes one of finding a material which has the optimum combination of properties. BISMUTH-SELENIUM ALLOYS Work on the equilibrium diagram of the bismuth-selenium alloys has been reviewed by Hanson,2 who gives the diagram reproduced in Fig I. There are two intermediate phases in this system, BiSe and Bi2Se3. The existence of an alpha and beta modification of BiSe has not been demonstrated satisfactorily and the writer found no evidence of it in the present work. Although the past results of X-ray experiments indicate that the broad faces of 0' plates are coherent with their matrix, dislocations lying in arrays have frequently been observed at these boundaries by transmission electron microscopy. Critical experiments employing the latter technique have been carried out in order to determine the origin of these dislocations. It is concluded that 8' plates are essentially coherent with the matrix at their broad faces throughout the aging temperature/time envelope studied. Virtually all of the dislocation arrays observed are deduced to have been formed by plastic deformation accompanying transformation. The proportion of dislocations arising from convexity of the plates is shown to be negligible by comparison with that from plastic deformation. At the higher aging temperatures, a[001] dislocations appeared in moderate numbers. These dislocations were traced directly, however, to the ledgewise dissolution of 0' occasioned by the formation nearby of 0 crystals. On the other hand, since there is a parametric difference normal to the broad faces of the ?' plates, mismatch dislocations do form at their edges. A previous conclusion that these dislocations have Burgers vectors of type a[001] was confirmed directly. The edges of 0' plates were observed to develop octagonal shapes when growing, but circular shapes during dissolution. 1 HIS paper presents the results of an investigation of the interfacial structures of plates of the transitional phase, 8', formed in an A1-4 pct Cu alloy. In a companion paper, Part 11, the effects of these structures upon the migration kinetics of a:?f boundaries are reported. This work is pa.rt of a general program designed to establish the basis of precipitate morphology. The present authors in Al-Ag,1 and whitton2 previously in U-C alloys, have used transmission electron microscopy to examine directly the vander Merwe3-6 networks of dislocations anticipated7 to compensate the small amount of lattice misfit normally founda at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates. Since the broad faces of 0' plates are considered to be perfectly coherent with the corresponding habit planes in the a matrix,' no dislocations should be present at these faces. Many reports have been published, however, giving evidence to the contrary.10-18 The primary objective of this investigation was therefore to ascertain the nature of these dislocation structures. An attempt to do this is described in the first three sections of this paper. Inspection of the matching of the a and 8 ' lattices at the orientations of the 0:0' boundary corresponding to the edges of 0' plates raises the possibility that these edges may be made up of rather closely spaced edge- type misfit dislocations oriented so as to be sessile with respect to the lengthening or shortening of the plates. Since this structure should severely inhibit migration of the plate edges (Ref. 7, Part II), a situation not originally anticipated,' an experimental determination of the interfacial structure of the edges of 8' plates was clearly in order, and is reported in Section III. Those aspects of the experimental procedure applicable to both Parts I and I1 are presented in the next section. Specific procedures applicable to individual aspects of each investigation, and also the relevant surveys of the literature, are then individually reported in the appropriate sections. I) GENERAL EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in both parts of these studies was the same as that of a previous investigation:" strips of A1-3.93 pct Cu, 0.009 in. thick, prepared as before, solution-annealed at 548°C for 6 hr, and quenched. Details of subsequent aging, and in some cases deformation treatments, are given in the Experimental Procedure sections of the individual parts of both papers. Specimens of the heat-treated strips were electro-thinned as beforeLg and examined in a Philips EM 200 microscope equipped with a goniometer stage. A commercial hot stage, of the grid-heater type and capable of * 30-deg tilt about one axis in the plane of the specimen, was also used for kinetic studies. The usual precaution of calibrating for the additional heat supplied by the electron beam was taken.19 A 16-mm cine cam-I era mounted outside the viewing window was frequently used to record the transformations. Conventional selected-area diffraction and dark-field viewing techniques were used to identify the precipitates in the foils. Normal bright-field images corresponding to two-beam diffracting conditions or dark-field images were employed to characterize the dislocations observed at the interfaces of the precipitates. The application of these techniques to the study of an interphase boundary, and the interpretation of the images,20'21 has been fully described in a previous paper.'
