The problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. The Process as Planned In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the company, first drafted a process in July of that year—five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or lour-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F). (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bi-sulphate to form a slurry. The effects of minor constituents on the malleability of nickel alloys are described. These effects are related to the atomic diameter, valence, and position on the Periodic Table. The basic methods for removal or neutralization of deleterious elements are then reviewed. Finally, practical methods for melting nickel alloys are described in detail and related to minor constituent control. L HE first malleable nickel was produced by Fleit-man in about 1870 by the addition of manganese and magnesium to the molten metal to counteract the harmful effects of sulfur. Merica and Waltenbergl explained the mechanism by which these elements accomplished the desired result. They showed that sulfur in concentrations in excess of about 0.005 pct produced films of a brittle low melting eutectic of nickel-nickel sulfide which completely surrounded the grains. When manganese was added to molten nickel it reacted with the sulfur to form manganese sulfide which precipitated as widely scattered globules in the grain boundaries. The further addition of small amounts of magnesium converted the sulfur to a very stable sulfide of magnesium which was relatively insoluble in both the liauid and solid states and therefore occurred as finely divided particles within the grains where it had relatively little detrimental effect upon the malleability of nickel or its alloys. The practice of treating nickel with manganese and magnesium came to be called "deoxidation" and was employed without appreciable modification for the commercial production of wrought nickel and high nickel alloys (in this paper—50 pct or more nickel) until about 1930 even though the results were never entirely satisfactory. At that time a more extensive study was made of the effects of minor constituents on malleability and metallurgical quality. The results, small portions of which have been published,2-4 are presented here with other pertinent data. EFFECTS OF MINOR CONSTITUENTS UPON NICKEL Systematic additions were made of 0.5 pct or less of each of most of the elements of the periodic ta- ble. It was established in this study that some minor constituents other than manganese and magnesium were extremely influential. The malleability, as evaluated by the reduction of area in tension tests, depended roughly on temperature as shown in Fig. 1. Four temperature zones are of interest; the cold malleable zone (up to about 1000° F), the red short zone from roughly 1000° to 1500' F, the hot malleable zone around 2000° F and the incipient melting zone. Most of the malleability problems are associated with the red short zone and the discussion will concern this mainly. IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established .R3 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. INTRODUCTION The Cyprus Pima Mine is located 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona and about fifty miles north of the Mexican border. The Cyprus Pima orebody was discovered in 1950. Feasibility studies were begun in 1952 employing underground development. Economic studies showed open pit operations to be feasible and stripping of overburden was begun in late 1955. The first ore was reached in October of 1956. A 3,000 tpd (tons per day) concentrator was completed and began operation January 1, 1957. From these beginnings, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has expanded into a plant processing approximately 54,000 to 56,000 tpd. Four expansions were required to bring the plant up to its present capacity. Each expansion incorporated what had been learned in previous operation of the plant. The first expansion was completed in August of 1963 doubling design capacity to 6,000 tpd. In reality, because of softer than average ore, capacity was closer to 8,000 tpd. Expansion II was completed in July 1966 bringing design capacity to 18,000 tpd. Expansion III followed immediately. Completed in the summer of 1967, this expansion increased the design capacity to 30,000 tpd. The actual dry tonnage of this portion of the operation in 1974 averaged 38,400 tpd, again, primarily as the result of treating softer than average ore. The latest expansion (Expansion IV), completed in December 1971 and utilizing a semi-autoge- nous grinding circuit, is located in a separate building (Mill II) approximately 200 yards southeast of the original mill (Mill I). Expansion IV was designed for 14,000 tpd, but after circuit modifications, averaged 16,500 tpd in 1974.

Prior to 1939 the bulk of the magnesium metal produced outside of the united Stater was extracted directly from the ore and ifi the United States from magnesium chloride obtained as a by-product from the treatment of natural brines. A typical brine is one containing about 0.25 to 0.75 per cent bromine, 11 to 14 per cent sodium chloride, 9 to 11 per cent calcium chloride and 3 to 10 per cent magnesium chloride. The state of Nevada was known to possess large deposits of magnesite ore (MgCOs, the carbonate of magnesium), in Gabbs Valley, near Luning, approximately 350 miles north of Boulder Dam. Deposits mined in Europe were supplying magnesite giving 97 per cent MgCOs with about I per cent each of silica, lime and oxides of iron and aluminum. parts of the Luning de-posits Were almost equally rich, and the general average was of sufficiently high grade for production of magnesium. power to the amount of 200,000 kw. was available immediately from Boulder Dam, and water from Lake Mead, and it was this combination of available power, water, and ore that led to the initial proposal to erect a magnesium reduction plant in southern Nevada to reduce the magnesite ores from Gabbs. The extraction of magnesium metal from these magnesite deposits had been considered by the I. G. Farbenindustrie of Germany as far back as 1929. Mine and Oxide Plant The mine and oxide plant of Basic Magnesium Incorporated are perched upon the oride slope of the Paradise Range, at an altitude of 5000 ft., overlooking the 30 mile desert panorama of Gabbs Valley, Nevada. , Ore Occurrence The Gabbs magnesite ores occur in a thick series of flat, westerly dipping dolomites of Upper Triassic age. The mag-"esite bodies are exposed in steep canyon "areas encircling the north and east edges of a northerly projecting tongue of a roughly elliptical stock of granodiorite, which intrudes the dolomite. The magnesite mineralization is considered to be a a of calcium by magnesium through the agency of hydro-thermal solutions associated with the intrusion of the granodiorite. The ore bodies are of very irregular shape and distribution. Incomplete evidence points to deep pipelike replacement shapes that mushroom out erratically at various elevations. A wide latitude in the degree of magnesium replacement is reflected in a variance of quality from pure magnesite to magnesitic dolomite. The, ore is a massive crystalline mag-nesite. Though some differences in characteristics occur between ore bodies, in general the ore is a medium-grained carbonate varying in color from white, through all shades of gray, to black. It has been the custom of the Railroad Commission of Texas to hold hearings each month with respect to existence and imminence of waste of oil and gas in Texas and its prevention, and to issue orders restricting the production of oil to the reasonable market demands and allocating production to the various fields in Texas. The practice of designating the actual days during the month on which wells are to be shut down was discontinued in the order for November 1942, and orders issued thereafter contain only the number of shut-in and producing days for the month. Orders issued by the Railroad Commission are divided into two main subdivisions, the first a general shutdown order of all oil wells in the various fields in Texas, and second, the exception of certain fields to this general order. Table I shows the producing days for all of the fields in Texas for 1944 under the first of these classifications : The fields that have producing schedules varying from the general order may be divided roughly into three subdivisions, as follows: Table 2 shows the producing days for certain fields that were prorated as a group throughout 1944. Other fields which were occasionally included with this group were also prorated under the general order and by special orders. The producing days for these irregular fields are shown in Table 4. In Table 3 are listed fields that were exempted from any shutdown days during December 1944, the majority retaining this exception throughout 1944. Certain fields included in the general order were added to this group on the first day of the month shown.

ARTICLE I Definitions Section 1.-For the purpose of these regulations (proposed), definitions are as follows: Well.-A bore-hole drilled for the purpose of developing natural gas or petroleum, or a bore-hole producing natural gas or petroleum. Well Operator.-Any person, persons, firm, partnership, corporation, company or association that proposes to, or does drill, operate, or abandon a well as herein defined. Coal Operator.-Any person, persons, firm, partnership, corporation, company or association that proposes to, or does operate, a coal mine in territory known or reputed to be underlain with oil or gas-bearing strata. State Mining Department.-The duly constituted authorities of a state having jurisdiction over coal-mining operations. Plat.-A map, drawing, or print made in accordance with the pro-visions of these regulations (proposed). Casing.-The pipe greater than 3 in. in diameter commonly used in wells drilled for natural gas and petroleum. Oil and Gas.-Synonyms, respectively, for petroleum and natural gas. Cement.-Hydraulic cement properly nixed with water only. Workable Coal Bed.-A coal bed in which, in the united judgment of the coal operator, the well operator and the State Mining Department, protection for life or property will be required when wells are drilled through it.

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. We should give them equal importance; for we know that to produce the best results me must start with a good

THE disseminated lead district of Southeast Missouri lies 70 miles south of St. Louis. The only metal of economic importance in the ore is lead, but minor amounts occur of iron, zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, silver and cadmium. These minor metals, as might be expected, tend to concentrate in both the flotation and table middlings. In the past, some zinc has been recovered by differential flotation. The silver and cadmium tend to associate with the zinc, and some recovery is made of these two metals at the smelter. The lead occurs as galena, or lead sulphide. The minor metals are also present as sulphides. The presence of oxidized lead is suspected, but has not been definitely proved. The gangue is chiefly dolomitic limestone, with small amounts of sandstone and shaly glauconitic and chloritic minerals. The ore contains about 3.25 per cent lead, occurring as galena disseminated through the gangue. Some of the galena is very finely disseminated, and the mineral in the gravity tailings, or chat, is seldom or never in the free state. The method of treatment of the ore has been evolved over a period of 75 years; hence probably is not far from correct. The milling processes have tended toward simplification during the past 15 years, but recoveries have never been sacrificed for the sake of simplicity. In many cases, simplification of flowsheets has led to better recoveries and operating economies. A simplified flowsheet is shown in Fig. I. The St. Joseph Lead Co. operates four mills in the Flat River district, with a normal total capacity of about 21,000 tons per day, divided as follows: Federal mill, 11,000 tons; Leadwood mill, 4500 tons; Desloge mill, 3400 tons and Bonne Terre mill 2400 tons. The methods of concentration used at these plants are similar in principle; they differ mainly in details and in the type and size of the equipment used. The process of concentration may be divided into five main steps; i.e., dry crushing, wet grinding, classification with its attendant desliming, tabling and flotation. A brief description of these processes will be given, noting important differences in the various plants, and also noting the more important changes or developments of the past few years. DRY CRUSHING The run-of-mine ore is hoisted in skips, the capacity of these skips ranging from 2 ¾ tons to 8 ¼ tons. At the Desloge plant, the ore is hoisted in 2-ton mine cars on self-dumping cages. All ore is hoisted at shafts adjacent to the various crushing plants, no ore being transported on the surface. Primary breaking at all the mills is accomplished with 9E Telsmith breakers. HAVING suggested magmatic waters as the probable agents of vein- and ore-deposition in southeastern Alaska in a paper entitled, The Geology of the Treadwell Ore-Deposits,1 it is with particular interest that I note W. Lindgren's application of the hypothesis of igneous emanations to the gold-quartz veins of Victoria and of California.2 Mr. Lindgren says: "In the above paragraphs I have repeatedly called attention to remarkable similarities in vein-filling and metasomatic action between the Victorian quartz veins and those of Sierra Nevada. Another striking similarity is that in both of these regions the veins were formed just after the intrusions of vast masses of granite or dioritic magma into crumpled and compressed sediments. I am convinced that these similarities are due to closely similar modes of formation. With some confidence, I would formulate the hypothesis that the gold and the quartz in this type of veins have been deposited chiefly by `eruptive after-effects;' in other words, chiefly by hot ascending waters originally contained in the granitic magma and released from it by decreasing pressure, due to its eruption into the upper parts of the lithosphere. It is quite possible that atmospheric waters may have played a certain part by aiding the precipitation and by effecting certain forms of concentration in the deposits." There are many reasons for extending this hypothesis to southeastern Alaska. This region and the Sierra Nevada belt of California are undoubtedly parts of one geologic province, throughout which the main events of geologic time are evidenced by identical or closely similar records in the rocks. Our knowledge of the former region is still fragmentary, to be sure, but the origin-dates of the most prominent features of

Problems discussed and research opportunities identified during the workshop in the major areas of 1) flocculation, 2) flotation, 3) leaching and magnetic separation are summarized below. I. FLOCCULATION Problems Practical problems caused by unintentional flocculation or dispersion were described in the papers that dealt with iron ore processing, selective flocculation, fine coal processing, phosphate processing and potash processing. Ideas generated during the discussions ranged from the very practical suggestion that a conscious effort be made to transfer knowhow from the experienced clay industry to the metals and fuels-from-slimes industry. . . , to the familiar appeals for omnipotent theoretical developments. There was surprising recurrence of some questions in many contexts. Recurring questions are emphasized here rather than commodity-specific problems because their answers would serve a wider clientele usage. There is indeed no objection and some advantage to commodity-specific research, however, provided the proposed project is planned with full cognizance of transferable knowledge in other commodities, and of the possible usefulness of these results in other areas. Research Needs Most of the questions or research opportunities can be classified into three groups: a) water chemistry, b) dewatering, and c) flocculation theory. Other classifications are possible and probably useful. In each group there is a clear need for outwardly esoteric theoretical research a clear application of that work to current practical problems. Higher priority should be given to proposals for theoretical research which explicitly show the expected ultimate usefulness of the result. Likewise, proposals for applied research should demonstrate cognizance of applicable theory. Both of these types of projects could profit from collaboration among industrial, university and government personnel.

THIS paper will not be a technical paper, because, although I have been in. the business of mining and selling coal for 30 odd years, I am neither a mining engineer nor a practical miner. If I digress from time to time from my thesis, I must be forgiven by the expert engineers and highly technical gentlemen for whose proceedings this article is written. Waste of the wonderful store of power that the Creator placed at our disposal appears to have been the theory and the basis of our methods of extracting this power-waste from the time the coal is mined to the time it is consumed. Let us consider the prime causes of this wastage which has been the heritage of the coal mining industry. In the early days-about 150 years after "Stone Cole" was discovered in Illinois by Joliet and Marquette, and Father Hennepin noted a, "sole" mine on his map-the mode of mining prevalent among farmer land-owners, on whose property coal was discovered near the surface or outcropping on the hillsides, was to enter the seam by a shallow shaft or drift into the hillside and remove the coal by wedging it down until a large room was left. The roof without support would fall and our primitive coal operator would then sink another shaft or drive another drift. In these early operations only the large lumps were taken and all small pieces and screenings were left to be covered by the fall of the roof-in fact this condition prevailed in Illinois up to about 1885. Gradually the method of mining changed from the open chamber, to a single entry with rooms turned to the right and left. Later, as the demand for coal increased and the necessity for larger mines became evident, the "room and pillar" system grew to be regular practice.

I. THE GENESIS OF THE DEPOSITS THE ore deposits at Firmeza have been worked continuously since 1884; those at Daiquiri since 1895. It is surprising, therefore, that they have not been the object of careful geologic study until quite recently. It is true that considerable attention was paid to these deposits by A. C. Spencer, in 1901, in the report on the geology of Cuba, by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer,1 but this was only incidental to a hasty general reconnaissance of the Island. As far as the Daiquiri deposits are concerned, this gap has been filled by the appearance of the two papers by Prof. James F. Kemp2 and by Prof. Waldemar Lindgren and Clyde P. Ross respectively.3 Max Roesler, first holder of the Emmons fellowship, made a detailed study of the Firmeza deposits during the past summer, so that soon we can expect a full description of them. Consequently, there is no. demand at the present time for a description of the deposits from other sources, rind that is not the purpose of this paper. The papers on Daiquiri, however, leave unsolved problems in regard to the age of the rocks of the district and certain phases of the genesis of the deposits, and it is with the. hope of aiding in the solution of some of these problems that this contribution is offered. Kemp, and Lindgren and Ross agree in assigning these deposits to the type of contact metamorphic deposits. They disagree in part on the question of their localization. The deposits occur in an extensive area of diorite which includes numerous blocks of limestone, and some-

The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less ex- pensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton- miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3a). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks.

Up to a certain limit, the increase of pressure on the diamond-drill increases the rate of progress in drilling. That limit is set by the resistance of the diamonds to compression; and beyond it, the destruction of the stones will involve an economic loss, both in time and in money. It is, therefore, important to all diamond-drillers to know what is the resistance mentioned. In Europe, operators usually follow an empirical rule, which directs the maintenance of a pressure, on the area of the bottom of the drilling-tool, of 12 kg. per sq. em. For the tools in ordinary use, this is equivalent to 1 kg. per sq. mm. of the diamonds set in the tool. So far as I know, American drillers are using pressures as high as 50 to 60 kg. per sq. em. of the total area of the drill, and the consumption of diamonds (on Denny's authority, 0.2 carat per meter bored) is greater in America than in Europe. But the reason for this diffrence may be the comparatively larger size of the diamonds commonly used by American drillers. With the assistance of my friend, the late S. Woisslaw, who was the pioneer of diamond-drilling in Russia, I selected from his stock a number of black diamonds, which I subjected in my laboratory to compression-tests, To prepare regular cubes for such tests, as is generally done with other stones, would have been not only costly, but, what is more important, practically useless. I therefore determined, in order to assimilate as nearly as possible the conditions of actual use, to place each sample between a hard plate (corresponding to the rock) and a softer plate (corresponding to the bottom of the tool), into which it would be pressed during the test.

THERE have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed ; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steam-engines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether. Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. MANGANESE ore is a true jack-of-all trades among industrial minerals, its only possible rival being iron ore. It is used in porcelain enamel, dry batteries, building brick, glazed pottery, floor tile, plastics, welding rods, chemicals, and varnish. You may be reading this through spectacles decolorized with manganese, and the light bulb above you contains some of this element. GEOLOGY Nearly all commercial manganese oxide deposits are of secondary origin; that is, they are concentrated by weathering from other manganese minerals more sparsely distributed in veins. The oxide minerals usually form irregular masses but in some places (Russia) they occur as beds of varying thickness and purity. Some manganese oxide bodies occur in soft gravel or clay formations but in other places the minerals are found in the form of veins and rounded nodules in limestone and other hard rocks. The geologic features of manganese deposits closely resemble those of iron deposits. Classification of the deposits is shown in the following table: I. Recent work indicates that fluosilicate ions and or fluosilicate amine complex ions play important roles in fluoride activation of bery and feldspars in cationic flotation systems. In an attempt to further confirm conclusions reached in this earlier work, an infrared and X-ray diffraction study of the action of fluorides in cationic flotation of silicates was undertaken. It should be noted that in recent years considerable use has been made of infrared spectroscopy in studies of surface phenomena,2-4 and these studies have established the excellence of the technique. In the present study infrared spectra were obtained for various products of the reaction of HF and dode-cyclamine hydrochloride with quartz, microcline and beryl. These spectra were compared with one another and spectra of several inorganic and organic substances. In addition to infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns were run on many of the reaction products obtained. A model 137 B Perkin Elmer Infracord double beam spectrophotometer containing sodium chloride optics was used to obtain the spectra. Infrared samples, except for the dodecylamine sample, were prepared by thoroughly mixing the substance to be analyzed with purified KBr in steel vessels on a Wig-L-Bug amalgamator. One-half in. pellets weighing 100 mg were than pressed under vacuum. Details concerning percentage of the substance to be analyzed in the pellets are indicated on the spectra. In all cases except for dodecylamine a KBr pellet was placed in the reference beam of the spectrophotometer to cancel bands due to possible impurities in the KBr. The dodecylamine sample on which an infrared spectrum was obtained was prepared by placing pure dodecylamine between two salt plates. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with a Norelco instrument, using a copper target tube, nickel filter and Geiger tube detector. The samples were ground into powders and either placed on glass slides with glue or placed into regular powder sample holders for diffraction studies. Goniometer scanning speed varied from 1°/min to 1/8°/min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Infrared spectra of microcline, beryl and quartz were obtained first and are shown in Fig. 1. These spectra agree reasonably well with previously reported spectra.5,6 The microcline (Fig. 1 a) and beryl (Fig. 1 b) were from good Black Hills crystals. The quartz (Fig. 1 c) was from a large, clear Brazilian crystal. It is not clear whether absorption bands of minerals are due to molecular vibrations, lattice vibrations or both. Fig. 2 shows infrared spectra of dodecylamine (Fig. 2 a) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (Fig. 2 b). The dodecylamine spectrum checks quite closely with that reported in Sadtler.8 Little is known of the spectra of hydrochloride salts of amines,9 and a spectrum of dodecylamine hydrochloride could not be

The nature of certain pernicious dusts commonly encountered in the removal of iron ore from the underground mines of the Lake Superior district is recognized, and appropriate measures for the protection of individuals subjected to these dusts have been applied in most mines for more than 10 years. Undoubtedly the principal concern has been demanded by dusts that contain as a constituent silicon dioxide in its free or uncombined state, the mineral we all know as quartz or chert. Investigators1 agree that among the factors that determine injurious exposure are: the composition of the dust, the concentration suspended at the breathing level and the duration of the exposure. We have on hand data that describe the experience of several underground iron-ore mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin in regard to these factors, which in a large measure also reflect the general experience of the other mines of the area. We believe that a discussion of these data will indicate the effectiveness of the dust-control methods that have been considered good practice and that have been employed over a long period of time. A silicosis-prevention program was ini- tiated by the iron mines of the Upper Peninsula in 1934 and records of mine dustiness are available from that date to the present time. For dust conditions previous to 1934 the results of observations conducted in other industries can be utilized together with local information pertaining to the development and initial application of rock-drilling equipment. Development of Rock DriI,I.s Thc earliest percussion rock drill that later had any industrial use was patented in this country in 1851.2 This machine was later modified and improved in many respects but its Piston-Type design remained standard for drilling equipment in most mines for the next 63 years.3 The piston drill was operated either by air or by steam. It employed a solid drill steel, fastened directly to the reciprocating piston. The drilling was done dry except in holes directed at an angle below the horizontal. For these water was manually injected into the hole and the pumping action of the rod expelled the sludge. The dry cuttings from drillings inclined above the horizontal fell from the hole by their own weight. A development of major importance from the standpoint of dust generation and control occurred with the invention by J. G. Leyner of a hammer-type rock drill that embodied the essential feature of a drill steel with a hollow core. His patent was secured in 1897. The machine was a radical departure in drilling method.
