Shear strength testing of rock discontinuity surfaces has been undertaken at a considerable number of open pit gold mining operations in Western Australia, as part of geotechnical studies of pit wall stability. These mining operations are located in geological settings that are typified by highly weathered and/or chemically altered rocks that contain significant structural fabric in which accurate and representative measurement of shear strength is essential.Little of the published rock discontinuity shear test work and back-analysis of failures has been conducted on weathered discontinuity surfaces, at low normal stress levels which are comparable to Western Australian conditions. Available shear strength data are reviewed and the following aspects of shear strength testing are considered:ò the need for shear strength test work and the amount of testing required;ò review of laboratory testing methods and the quality of the results; ò presentation of the test results;ò discussion of the shear strength failure criteria; ò interpretation of the test results;ò summary of test results for a variety of rock types, degree of weathering and discontinuity surface conditions;ò a review of laboratory and field shear strength data to illustrate the amount of variability that can occur; andò a monitoring strategy is proposed to manage the uncertainty associated with discontinuity shear strength.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

In this climate of increasing demand for commodities, it is becoming necessary to expand and optimise existing bulk material handling facilities in order to increase capacity to satisfy demand. Production capacity in these facilities is often adversely impacted during the expansion process. A successful and proven strategy to reduce this impact is to bring the additional capacity online in stages coinciding with routine maintenance or other short shutdowns. Compatibility of the automation systems with staged upgrades in capacity is the key to achieving a successful outcome. Since 1994, Hatch has been researching a generic, highly configurable product transport control system that can be reconfigured to cater for plant expansions or modifications without incurring significant risk to production capacity. In 2002, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPB IO) recognised the need for such a generic Route Selection and Sequencing (RSS) system and engaged Hatch to build a generic RSS system as part of the $US351 million BHPB IO Products and Capacity Expansion (PACE) project. In 2004, Hatch successfully deployed such a generic configurable control system at BHPB IO Port Hedland Ore Handling Facility. This generic system is known as the Hatch Product Transport (HPT) System.

The professional skills shortage is intensifying, and commentators are predicting a shortfall in supply of qualified professionals for the mining industry, ranging from thousands to tens-of-thousands by 2020 (Tuckwell, 2011; Scoble, 2011; Laurence and Hebblewhite, 2011). Human resources are already stretched, and university graduates arriving in the workplace are often moved rapidly into management positions where there is limited scope to develop their engineering proficiency. This process may well be developing excellent young managers, but our industry is producing fewer excellent young engineers (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). Many believe that it is engineering excellence that is likely to be the key to our industryÆs success in the decade to come. An innovative in-house graduate development program has been created by specialists at the JK Centre in partnership with two mining companies. This program, known as MetSkill«, has been running throughout 2012. Groups of graduates have had to identify a process plant optimisation opportunity and embark on a structured program of data collection and analysis, facilitated by a æteaching teamÆ of researchers and consultants from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. This group project culminates in a report-back session to senior company officials. Along the way, a series of short workshops and other activities provide opportunities to work on specialist skills, and support is also offered by senior technical specialists from the companies involved.This paper outlines key features of the MetSkill« program, along with a report-card on progress in 2012 and plans for further program development in 2013.CITATION:Drinkwater, D and Bianco, N, 2012. Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

The decision to contract or owner mine should be independent of, and should be made before, definitive estimated cost comparisons could be available. There is substantial potential risk of estimated cost comparisons being flawed due to difficulties in compiling comparable estimates for differing business objectives, errors and omissions or because of significant bias. In the current economic environment, escalating cost pressures potentially lead to increased incidence of disputes in mining contracts. The apparent cost of contractorÆs profit and overheads has tended to become more significant to owners. Economy-driven trends towards higher levels of performance and commercial risk for contractors, and the potential for more adversarial, difficult management; with attendant disputation between contractors and owners, have encouraged development of so-called ærelationship contractsÆ û partnering or project alliance contracts. The paper discusses the issues, circumstances when owner mining or contract mining is favoured and perceived advantages and disadvantages of contract mining. The implications of owner-perceived core business and core skills and outsourcing are also discussed. Techniques of introducing objectivity into the decision to owner or contract mine using matrix analysis or benefit comparisons are described. A disciplined procurement process should deliver a decision to owner or contract mine independent of, and prior to, any definitive comparison of estimated costs. A generic procurement process model is provided as a basis for discussion. Risk is discussed generally and as a significant factor in comparison of estimated operating costs. Consideration of risk and any prudent cost treatment are promoted as necessary pre-requisites to any comparison of estimated costs. The paper develops the concept that the decision to owner or contract mine should be based on real benefits that become obvious in the early stages of the development, particularly the procurement process; and before definitive estimated cost comparison can be available. In the context of this concept estimated cost comparisons tend to be confirmatory. Problems with comparing estimated ownerÆs operating costs with tendered contract prices are also discussed, particularly recovery of capital cost of equipment; and the owner minerÆs trade-off of operating risks for the residual contractorÆs margin attributed to overheads and profit. The paper concludes that sole reliance on a comparison of estimated ownerÆs operating costs with tendered contract prices in deciding to owner or contract mine is questionable and likely driven by a need to satisfy specific in-house customers.

Factors affecting the rate of arsenic removal from lead bullion during softening processes were studied. Very high rates of removal could be obtained under conditions of intense agitation and ready availability of oxidant. Reaction mechanisms were proposed to explain the sequences observed. Selective removal of arsenic with minimal loss of antimony from bullion was favoured by a low temperature Harris process and oxidizing via a caustic soda medium.

The effect of blast vibration on highwall stability is a common concern for many open pit mines. Vibration in such a case is a typical near-field blast vibration situation. Vibration modelling in the near-field of a blast requires consideration of both the amplitude and frequency attenuation of waveforms with distance. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration and do not simulate the frequency attenuation and its effect on waveform shape. With the advent of electronic detonators it is desirable to quantify the effects of blast delay on the amplitude as well as the frequency of blast vibrations. A suitable modelling tool is proposed here. At present, a blast vibration model with double attenuations(amplitude and frequency) has been developed at Orica. The present model simulates the amplitude and frequency attenuations separately using different transfer functions. The amplitude attenuation is modelled according to the non-linear relation between the peak particle velocity (PPV) and the charge weight scaled distance established from the signature hole vibration. The frequency attenuation is modelled with the signal broadening based on KjartanssonÆs transfer function û a linear model for attenuation of waves. The model is capable of taking multiple sets of signature waveforms as input to improve the modelling accuracy of the wave propagation in the geology at a site. The screening effect of the earlier firing holes in the path of a later firing hole is taken into account on not only the amplitude, but also frequency attenuation. The present blast vibration model is suitable for modelling both near-field and far-field blast vibrations. It yields reasonable agreement with measured field data for the near-field vibration examples discussed.

The flotation of pyrite in ethyl xanthate solutions is presented along with electrokinetic results. The results have been analysed in view of recently published thermodynamic calculations as well as other published data on the pyrite-xanthate system including adsorption and voltarnmetry studies. The flotation response of pyrite in xanthate solutions is characterised by two maxima, one at pH 4 and the other at pH 8-9. The acidic maxima is also associated with a reversal in the electrophoretic mobility of pyrite, probably due to the formation of ferric xanthate on the pyrite surface through chemisorption of xanthate ions while the basic maxima is not associated with major changes in the mobility and flotation at this pH can probably be attributed the adsorption of dixanthogen. It is concluded that there is not sufficient experimental evidence to conclusively attribute the lack of flotation response in solutions at near neutral pH to any particular phenomena, either kinetic or thermodynamic.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources, is reviewed. In heavily-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations, By contrast, in and areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Within the Business Process Improvement Program initiated at Placer Dome during 2003 was the Business Performance Management Project (BPM).BPMÆ s aim has been to extract productivity improvements from individual business units by providing a model for implementing leading practice based management process within the Placer Dome Group, sharing management best practice, injecting new management techniques and instilling a continuous improvement culture. The installation of an underground dispatch system has been a key component of the BPM project at Osborne Mine.Information capture and analysis allows for corrective action to be planned and executed before there is a material impact on the performance of a business unit. This paper briefly describes the principles and practices of effective business performance management, the four processes of a management operating system namely; strategic and tactical planning, implementation and reporting. The identification of business drivers, their measures and associated key performance indicators is discussed. The benefits of an underground dispatch system at Osborne with respect to safety, production and maintenance is described along with the installation process within the mining department that included its configuration, resourcing and roll out.

FIRST TOWN PLANNING PROPOSALS Initially, accommodation at the minesite was provided at the Pastoral Homestead situated some seven kilometres north-east of the mine and between 1963 and 1966 was the base of the exploration camp. Tents were used for sleeping of 100 men and the Homestead used for dining and office facilities. With the beginning of ore production and shipment due to commence in 1969 a permanent town location was sought. Early town planning studies had been commissioned by Amax Inc. and Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. and in 1967 The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. took over the responsibility for putting them into effect. The location chosen was about four kilometres due east of the mine. Certain dominant factors influenced this choice. It was near enough to the mine to share services, yet far enough away not to be affected by dust and noise and received the additional shelter of a range of hills separating it from the mine. A predominant slope to the east provided good drainage and the ground was easy to excavate for services.

Access roads for haulage, construction or maintenance purposes are discussed with particular attention being given to the un- sealed "all weather" form of construction for Off-Highway applications. The service conditions experienced by the surfaces used in these roads is examined. These conditions are discussed in terms of the conventional engineering properties used for natural gravel material selection. Experience gained during the construction of a pipeline access track is used to illustratE material selection guidelines based on geological input and an understanding of good construction practices. Although the unsealed gravel road is the back-bone of the rural road network in Australia, in general, traffic loadings are relatively low compared to the off-highway unsealed haulage road. The cost of the haulage/access road construction component is one important factor in project planning which needs careful consideration. It is no longer acceptable that the initial rough exploration track be gradually upgraded so that it will eventually carry construction and maintenance traffic safely and efficiently. Ok Tedi Mine is a high production open pit porphyry copper mine located high in the Star mountains of Papua New Guinea. The mine produces an average of 160 000 tonnes of ore and waste daily at a 1:1 strip ratio. Full scale drilling and blasting began in 1988, prior to which time all material was ripped and dozed.Drilling and blasting procedures at Ok Tedi underwent a major review commencing mid-1989. As a result of a mutual commitment by management at Ok Tedi and the mines explosives supplier ICI, significant reductions in overall blasting costs have been realised. These cost savings are primarily the result of the introduction of air bags, expanded patterns and better field execution.

Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is an energy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations have utilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing to the large flow of slurry through the mill that results from operating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designed to cope. However, the literature has little or no information on how grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to their ability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years the JKMRC has been researching this area and has developed relationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowrate capacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes of pulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing this inefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paper describes the models that have been developed through this program and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy. Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter are also presented.

The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks. The Kintyre uranium deposit was discovered in 1985 in the course of following up radio- metric anomalies generated in an earlier air- borne survey. The latter survey was conducted primarily to acquire aeromagnetic data for diamond exploration and the uranium discovery was made during a subsequent campaign of base- metal exploration. CRAE commitment to the Rudall area for a range of commodities over a period of 13 years made a significant contrib- ution to the discovery of Kintyre. Other con- tributing factors included CRAE's multicommod- ity approach to exploration, management support and continuity in the geological team. The Kintyre uranium deposit (Fig. 1) is located on the northern margin of the Rudall Metamorphic Complex, 60 kilometres south of Telfer and 260 kilometres north northeast of Newman, in the Paterson Province of northern Western Australia. It is 700 metres inside the northern boundary of the Rudall River National Park (15695 sq. km) and lies between the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert (Beard, 1969). Intense weathering since the Permian has produced a subdued landscape around the deposit. Resistant rock types still retain an older plateau surface but it is incised by more recent streams. Other Proterozoic and Permian rocks form low, sometimes rocky, areas largely covered by aeolian sand.
