With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. "The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. International codes of practice offer broad definitions with respect to the classification of resources in terms of risk. Specific guidelines and protocols, to analyse sample data, carry out geostatistical appraisals, develop geological models and finally estimate and classify resources, are not addressed. Neither are detailed requirements for engineering mineable reserves from estimated resources. In addition, international codes of practice fail to distinguish between types of deposit, other than in broad terms, as for example, The AusIMM JORC Code (JORC, 1999) which makes reference to diamond and coal deposits. The objective of this paper is therefore to set in motion the process of specifying detailed protocols, acceptable to the international community, for the assessment, reduction and management of risk associated with the development and extraction of mineral deposits. Ordinarily, the main risks and issues encountered during the process of estimating resources and subsequent conversion to reserves, encompass:failure to understand relevant geological controls of mineralisation; validation of grade interpolation; optimism in geotechnical appraisals of dilution and stability and the consequent selection of inappropriate mining methods; metallurgical modelling of minerals and contaminants reporting to concentrates; appraising the hydraulics of heap leaching and the numerous factors that can affect recovery; difficulty of managing metal price cycles and changes in regulations within the constraints of long-term mining plans; and development of better evaluation techniques for mining ventures. Uncertainty is inherent in estimation and engineering work, and its identification, reduction and management should be a fundamental goal of all involved in the mining industry (Figure 1). Variability may be reduced by:following internationally accepted practices for the collection, manipulation and analysis of geoscientific data; and verifying that the procedures actually performed meet the associated standards. Increasing amounts of data will also reduce uncertainty, but only if the procedures used to collect and appraise such data follow the relevant procedures. It is thus the aim of a series of papers in preparation, Beniscelli et al (in prep), to put forward detailed guidelines, for:project sponsors û to provide a global view of the work and documentation needed to support requests for funding various phases of project development and budget approvals; geologists û to indicate a checklist of the requirements and standards for the exploration and estimation of resources; and engineers and economic analysists û the protocols for characterising, modelling, engineering and evaluating the extraction of reserves. It is therefore hoped to encourage the development of consistent standards for declaring reserves within the mining industry. Data from projects and operations will be utilised to illustrate the benefits of adopting a rigorous approach to estimating resources and engineering reserves, Beniscelli et al (in prep).

A good blending system is one that ensures that a plant can cope with the amount of grade variation that it will encounter. Prediction of amounts of variation that will be encountered on time or tonnage scales that are important should be regarded as an essential part of the planning of mines and plants. In some cases, the natural amount of grade variation when ore is mined and handled in the cheapest way will be acceptable. In other cases, it is necessary to understand the effects that various ore-handling processes have on amounts of grade variation at various scales and to design a blending system with considerable care. Blending tends to matter more when plants are sensitive to many aspects of grade. It can be very difficult to find the best compromise between capital cost and the amount of grade variation. In these cases it is important that ore blending options be considered carefully as part of the planning of mines and plants. Failure to make plans that consider likely amounts of variation can be very expensive.

In recent years, significant improvements have been made in the design and operation of carbon-in-pulp plants. Some of the major developments in plant operation and technology are reviewed together with an outline of the research being undertaken in Western Australia. The main problems facing operators include the understanding and control of carbon fouling and regeneration, and the recovery of gold from the carbon. It is shown that carbon fouling by a variety of agents, particularly cyanide, calcium carbonate and silica, cause a significant loss of kinetic activity which in turn leads to poor plant performance. The importance of acid washing and adequate thermal reactivation is discussed. Although the Anglo elution procedure is commonly used in South Africa its use in Australia in preference to the conventional Zadra elution procedure is likely to be re- stricted because of its demand for high quality water. Solvent elution by the recently developed Micron procedure using refluxing methanol, ethanol or acetonitrile vapours is an attractive alternative. This elutes gold in 4-6 hours and provides concentrated gold solutions suitable for simplified gold recovery steps.

In the early 1950's, it was forecast that there would be, worldwide, a need for approximately sixty computers! Included in that estimate was provision for a considerable amount of geoscience modelling. Since 1950, the role and concept of the computer has changed. With that change has come alteration and adaptation within industry in order to better utilise the services and tools that computers can provide. For example the science of statistics prior to the computer was regarded as an intractible speciality. Computers have allowed the exploitation and further generation of statistical theory. In turn, as the science of statistics has become practical and relevant, the mineral geologist has moved from being essentially "a-numeric" to "non-numeric" to highly skilled in the application and use of very sophisticated statistical concepts. The modern computer provides the opportunity to perform many of the old practices more conveniently and/or economically and, perhaps more importantly, for exploration it provides- an enormous range of activities which previously would have been impossible. Such new activities allow for imaginative and creative application and extension of basic theory into practical situations, which when used by well trained, able people can open up new avenues of exploration. However, the use of such tools by poorly trained or incompetent people can lead to errors potentially as great as any success derived from the same tools. This paper reviews some applications of the computer to exploration, and attempts to discuss likely future developments.

Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. The Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery yields a low grade concentrate containing high levels of zinc and copper. External refining charges and high transport costs prompted the company to establish itsown enrichment facility.The route chosen was a wet chemicaltreatment which converts the gold, silver and other metals to their chloride. This is achieved with hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite. Gold is recovered from the resulting filtrate by cementation with copper.The solid residue from the gold process is washed and treated with ammonia which dissolves the silver chloride. Metallic silver is recovered from this solution, againby cementation with copper.

After many years of studying the rock mass gravitational flow phenomenon, it is well known that moisture conditions may change the mechanical properties of the caved and broken material, causing different problems at drawpoints. One specific problem, perhaps one of the most unpredictable and uncontrollable, is that of mudflows (also known as mud rushes). The aim of this paper is to show how to establish optimal extraction rates at a drawpoint in order to avoid the closure of that drawpoint due to the high risk associated with having high-technology automated loaders working in the production level of panel cave and block cave mines prone to mud flow events. This optimisation should take into consideration critical restrictions related to mine planning, such as the need to reach the planned production. It is also important to consider the correct design of surface (in the subsidence zone) and underground drainage systems to prevent groundwater or rainwater entering muck piles, filled stopes, galleries or open cuts. With these considerations, and keeping in mind other factors that should be included in a sensitivity analysis of variables, it is possible to find a correlation between the percentage of extraction from a drawpoint and the possibility of occurrence of a mudflow. Finally, this paper proposes different draw strategy techniques in order to mitigate potential mudflow issues on a caving production level.

Management of environmental issues is an integral part of the mine decommissioning process. In Queensland, miners must comply with environmental aspects of the Mineral Resources Act and Contaminated Land legislation. Successful decommissioning involves the integration of a final Plan of Operations, decommissioning report addressing the mineÆs commitments included in its Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS), and Site Contamination Report for relinquishment of leases under the Contaminated Land Act (1991). Niugini MiningÆs Red Dome Mine is proceeding through the decommissioning process. This paper discusses the important environmental management issues including sampling programs, management of culturally significant areas, assessment of background concentrations of target analytes, the use of historical reviews and risk assessment techniques, the timing of works, and the remediation/management of large areas of impacted land. The importance of a clear communications plan between key stakeholders is also discussed.

The general theme of the paper is a resume of factors which induce management to explore for oil, gas, coal and uranium in Australia. It is non-technical in the sense that apart from brief references exploration techniques are not covered. The central theme is the interplay of such diverse factors as taxation, mining 'regu- lations, exploration costs, availability of competent personnel, potential markets within and outside Australia, projected prices of sources of energy and their distortion by governmental action including restrictions on international trade for economic or political reasons, the role of the so-called multi- national companies, extreme views by pressure groups on the preservation of the environment, the availability of funds for exploration and the possible returns to the providers of exploration monies.

The eastern Asia island-arc systems are regarded as specific marginal structures having the common features of geological development and deep structure. The notions on deep structure of island- arc systems are based on the data of studies of the mantle and low-crustal xenoliths. Analysis of location of deposits and ore occurrences of different ages within island arcs in comparison with, the processes of deep heat and mass transfer allows us to develop a-model of mobilization, migration and accumulation of ore substance in the "crust-mantle" system.

The Century zinc deposit is located in Queensland approximately 250 kilometres north north-west of the provincial city of Mount Isa, on Lawn Hill Station and within 150 kilometres of the Gulf of Carpentaria.ThefirstMining Lease in this area was pegged in 1887. The Silver King vein is the largestvein deposit in the area and has produced lead and zinc, in addition to 74,000 ounces of silver during its history.A total of forty three veins containing silver, lead and zinc are now known, all of which were discovered by prospectors within 10 years of the first vein being recognized.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the technical feasibility of application of the electric monorail as a haulage system in hard-rock underground mining in Australia, in comparison to conventional truck haulage systems. The elements of the system being investigated include mine design and layout, installation, loading and unloading subsystems, tramming speeds, cost and productivity, automation, ground support, safety and environmental factors. Electric monorail systems are potentially more cost-effective due to a range of factors: only the one system may be needed for the transportation of workers, material and rock; and excavations for monorail haulage can be smaller and mined at much steeper gradients than for truck haulage. The smaller excavation size also reduces the need for costly ground support and û in another important measure for the health and safety of mine workers, and for energy savings û it reduces ventilation requirements. Electric monorail haulage technology is being applied in hard rock mines in South Africa and considerable benefits have been realised by the industry in that country. In Australia, mine designs for metal mines generally remain based on truck haulage and/or shaft hoisting systems. There is a tendency to apply these haulage systems to every orebody. For the industry to achieve sustained growth against a backdrop of volatile diesel prices and environmental concerns, new generation underground haulage systems are required. The monorail haulage system offers opportunities in improving materials handling efficiencies in underground mining operations. This paper examines the application of monorail haulage in metalliferous underground mining, presents comparative data with track and trackless haulage systems and develops concepts for system application in combination with conveyor belt haulage and narrow vein mining situations.

The annual growth in lead consumption in the Western world has declined sharply in the past ten years, as lead has suffered a wave of substitution by other materials, and has also been the object of concern about its toxicity in daily applications. Like most metal industries, the lead industry has tended to be more production-oriented than market-oriented than is the case with some of its competitors. However, in recent times this pessimism and preoccupation with weathering the threats from environmental legislation, substitution and low prices appears to have been replaced with a new optimism in some sectors of the industry. This is indicated by renewed promotional activities and efforts to find more applications and market opportunities.
