Résumé : la mine d?Elhammam, opération du groupe minier Marocain Managem, est située au sud de la ville de Meknes à 63 km, elle exploite un gisement de fluorine depuis 1974. La minéralisation se présente sous forme de deux filons principaux orientés N45° avec un pendage variant de 65 à 90° NW, entre ces deux filons on note la présence d?une succession de filons satellites sécants. La méthode d?exploitation pratiquée depuis le démarrage de la mine est celle des chambres magasins, elle assure une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes. Cette méthode favorisée par une très bonne compétence mécanique des épontes de la minéralisation a offert à l?exploitation une rentabilité très satisfaisante grâce à son faible coût mine. Les travaux de recherche géologique menés en parallèle à l?exploitation ont permis la découverte d?un nouveau secteur ?K-Est Gouaïda? (KEG) qui fait l?extension nord-est du gisement principal, la minéralisation de ce secteur se présente sous forme de deux filons très étendus latéralement (900 m d?extension) et présentant une puissance minéralisée irrégulière et très faible 1.2 m en moyenne, les épontes de la minéralisation sont constituées de schistes de qualité mécanique très faible. Vers la fin des années 1990, l?exploitation s?est orientée vers le développement minier du secteur KEG. Ce développement consiste à faire le choix adéquat de la méthode et de l?infrastructure minière pour l?exploitation de ce nouveau secteur, KEG. La méthode des chambres magasins, pratiquée dans le gisement principal avec un faible coût mine, n?est pas praticable dans le nouveau secteur à cause de la qualité de ses terrains, l?irrégularité de la morphologie de sa minéralisation et de la faible puissance des ses filons. Seule la méthode des tranches montantes remblayées (TMR) peut être applicable techniquement vu les spécifications suscitées de la nouvelle minéralisation, la TMR doit être appliquée sous sa variante mécanisée pour faire face au niveau exigé de la production. Après le pilotage de l?exploitation par TMR mécanisée dans le secteur KEG, il a été confirmé que cette méthode donne une grande satisfaction en matière de stabilité des terrains, sécurité, sélectivité, productivité et récupération du gisement, néanmoins elle reste pénalisée par un coût mine trop élevé pour garder le niveau de rentabilité recherché par l?exploitation d?un produit de faible valeur marchande telle que la fluorine. Dans l?objectif de rentabiliser l?exploitation du secteur KEG qui représente en réserves l?équivalent d?une durée de vie de 4 à 5 ans et d?assurer la pérennité de l?activité, l?exploitation en collaboration avec Reminex, la filiale d?ingénierie de Managem, a adapté une nouvelle variante de la TMR mécanisée dite TMR avec plan incliné sur remblai. Cette nouvelle variante de la TMR consiste à réduire au maximum les travaux dans le stérile en reconstituant un plan incliné sur le remblai à l?intérieur des filons pour faire évoluer en vertical l?exploitation des tranches en montant vers la tête d?un panneau de minerai. La variante des tranches montantes remblayées mécanisées avec plan incliné sur remblai a été imaginée et appliquer en 1978 dans la mine de fluorine de Burc située au Sud-Ouest de la France (Sicard et Mailloux, 1983). Imaginée pour une cadence annuelle de 30000 tonnes et une mécanisation très modérée cette variante a été adaptée par l?exploitation de la mine d?Elhammam en 2002 pour un haut degré de mécanisation et une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes de minerai. Cette variante de la TMR est appliquée depuis le début de 2003 dans les chantiers du secteur KEG, elle présente les mêmes avantages techniques que la TMR mécanisée classique et elle a permis la réduction du volume des travaux d?infrastructure de 17.65 m à 6.25 m de travaux par 1000 tonnes de minerai. Ceci s?est traduit par une baisse du coût technique de la mine de 34% ce qui a donné un nouveau souffle à la mine pour assurer sa production et pour poursuivre la recherche géologique d?éventuelles zones à mettre en valeur.

A new, continuous fire refining process for copper has been developed and tested at the 5 tph pilot scale. During oxidation, the blister copper flows through a packed bed of crushed refractory bricks counter-current to a hot oxygen containing gas. The resulting desulphurized copper flows then directly into a packed bed of charcoal for deoxidation. By controlling the air to natural gas ratio, both temperature and reducing conditions can be controlled. Based on extensive laboratory scale measurements of the rate of copper oxidation and reduction, the process concept was developed aided by process modeling and simulation. The industrial-pilot scale installation built at the ENAMI Paipote smelter in Chile, consists of two cylindrical, compact reactors, operating in line, with a designed capacity of 5 t/h of blister copper. The results of the industrial-pilot tests confirmed the feasibility of the new process. The blister copper processing capacity was increased to 10 t/h with satisfactory sulphur removal. The degree of oxidation as well the copper temperature was controlled with relative ease. The specially designed siphon block allowed for smooth tapping of the oxidized copper and separation of refining slag. The reduction of oxidized copper in the packed bed of charcoal appeared to be very effective while control of the degree of reduction according to the height of the bed ensured control of the oxygen content in the refined copper at the required level.

Sustainable development has become a driving imperative for the resource industry as it is for the rest of the global business world. Being unsustainable is a risk no business can afford. Yet implementation of sustainable development practices beyond satisfaction of compulsory reporting is still sporadic. The current standard approaches to problem analysis and decision making are too narrow to capture the complexity of the issues at stake. Hence it is necessary to develop innovation in thinking and in doing. Those who search for ways to implement sustainable development use concepts such as Whole Systems Thinking and Eco-efficiency as well as tools like Life Cycle Analysis. Others develop their own instruments. In their effort to innovate they face both resistance and support within their organisation as well as within the industry or the wider context. This paper explores the factors that support, hinder and shape the sustainable development drive of the industry and proposes a comprehensive decision-making framework that links the goal of sustainability with the tools of sustainable development. This exploration is illustrated by a case study used in a doctoral research conducted on an engineering firm providing services to our industry.

The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

IN 1902, a famous Canadian geologist made the following statement : ?'From what we know row of the iron-ore fields of the Province, we may feel that Ontario is assured of a great future as an iron-ore producing country. Judging from the extent of the territory over which the newly discovered ranges have been found, Ontario should in the not far distant future take her place as one of the chief iron producers in the world". In 1905, an official of the Department of Mines said: "In ten years Canada will have b:ecome a great metallurgical country. You will see an iron industry in this Dominion larger than in any country in the world. Canada will yet furnish the world with its iron supply. It will be the same with iron as with wheat. A decade from now Canada will outstrip all other countries in wheat growing. The production of iron at a cheaper rate than it can be made elsewhere will cause Canada to take a similar position as far as iron is concerned". In 1924, a former President of the Institute, in arguing his claim for inconceivable mineral wealth in this country, stated as a "certainty" that iron-ore deposits on the scale of the ones in Minnesota would be found "again and again" in the Canadian Precambrian. In 1930, a Minister of Mines announced that "The country surrounding Churchill holds large deposits of valuable iron and coal", and he stated that, at that place, 'We will have an industry in iron that will compare with Pittsburgh". These statements are definite promises, just as definite and important as the statement "I promise to pay" on a note, and they are not fulfilled by casually stating, as is the habit, that someday we will work our low-grade iron ores. Nor are they fulfilled by stating, as is often done, "Oh, So-and-So did not mean that ' . Due to their importance and to the prominent positions held by the men who made these statements, they were widely circulated throughout Canada. They were taken at their face value, and on the strength of them and many more of the same kind in regard to our other resources we have planned and built, at huge expense, provinces, governments, civil services, railways, and other equipment. The reserves that were to justify these expenditures have not appeared. There has not been a ton of iron ore mined in Canada for many years, and important commercial reserves are unknown. We have built the mill, but adequate ore is lacking.

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. Les principales zones minéralisées spatialement associées au stock sont généralement situées soit près des linéaments magnétiques est-ouest, soit le long de ceux-ci.Le SES semble s’être mis en place le long d’une structure majeure, développée tardivement dans l’évolution de la Sous-province abitibienne, comme les autres plutons alcalins felsiques. Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

"The Afsin-Elbistan coal deposit with its 3.4 billion metric tons of reserve is the biggest coal basin and one of the most important resources for electrical energy production in Turkey. The coal deposit is located north of Elbistan, Kahramanmaras Province, in southeast Turkey (Fig. 1).The Kislakoy sub-basin of the Afsin-Elbistan basin was selected as the first open cast mine to feed four power station blocks of 340 MW each. The mine is equipped with six identical bucket wheel excavators of the type Sch Rs (2300/5) 32. The annual coal demand of the power station is 18.5 million metric tons. The Elbistan basin encompasses an area of 900 km2, and its centre lies about 1150 m above mean sea level. The sedimentation took place mainly in the upper Pliocene period. The thickness of the coal bed varies from 20 m to 60 m, respectively. The basal part of the coal beds consists of clay, marl and sandy clay. These formations are overlain by gyttja, which may also occur in the form of calcareous ooze, enveloping coal beds. The thickness of the gyttja is up to 35 m (Otto-Gold, 1969). The coal of Afsin-Elbistan is soft coal and the quality has been found to vary considerably throughout the deposit. The thicknesses of the sterile intercalations vary from 0.50 m to 2.2 m and average 1 m in thickness. From the quality control point of view, the coal seam is regarded as upper seam where the gyttja formation occurs as sterile intercalations, and lower seam where the clay formation occurs instead of the gyttja (Fig. 2). The CaO content of upper Kislakoy coal is very high, grinding resistance is low and base to acid ratio of ash, that is, the ratio of acid oxides of metals to base, is greater than one (Ural and Onur, 2001). Contrary to upper Kislakoy coal, CaO content of lower Kislakoy coal is very low, grinding resistance is high and base:acid ratio of ash is smaller than one. Modified Impact Strength Index (MISI) tests are used to determine the grindability of the Elbistan coals (Ural, 1999)."

Mine reconciliation is the art and science of comparing predictions and real-world outcomes with the intent of revealing the true quality of performance of models, planning, mining, and mineral processing. When mine reconciliation is conducted in a systematic, transparent and sustainable way it can play a central role in the governance of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimation and reporting. The core processes of modelling, planning, mining, and processing need to be transparent to be able to demonstrate that MRMR are reliable predictors of mine performance and value. Transparency is also necessary for mine technical staff to generate meaningful analyses, conclusions, and business improvement actions that demonstrably maximise value for all stakeholders. Most mines have some form of mine reconciliation practice, however because there is no agreed industry standard, and because mine reconciliation is difficult for a variety of reasons, it is often unsustained and/or ineffective at delivering the required transparency of performance. To deliver true governance of MRMR and business value, mine reconciliation must be sustainable. There are two categories of issues that combine to make mine reconciliation extremely difficult to sustain, these are technical, and people related. Technical issues include defining standard terms, accurately tracking material flows, data availability/adequacy/quality, calculation of key performance indicators and tolerance limits, analysis, and interpretation of results, understanding limitations of modelling techniques, and defining appropriate actions that can deliver value. These technical challenges are non-trivial, however compounding these are a range of people issues that include personal agendas, scepticism, lack of knowledge and experience, poor teamwork, absent leadership, toxic workplace culture, staff turnover, ineffective communication, siloed organisational structure, and lack of deliberate change management. All these problems can be solved with clarity of purpose, definition of the process of mine reconciliation, discipline in following the process, appropriate resourcing, and commitment to success across the entire organisation. Outlined in this paper is a management system that delivers sustainable mine reconciliation by addressing both the technical and people issues described above. This approach can deliver significant value for a mine and adds a robust, defensible governance over MRMR estimation and reporting.

ABSTRACT The Caetité-Brazil uranium facility produces approximately 400 tonnes U3O8 per year from an ore averaging 0.29% U3O8. The process steps are ore crushing, heap leaching with sulphuric acid, uranium separation and purification by solvent extraction (SX) with a tertiary amine, followed by stripping with a sodium chloride solution, precipitation as ammonium diuranate (ADU), and product drying. A change in the milling process is being evaluated to increase production and uranium recovery. Heap leaching will be replaced by conventional agitated tank leaching of the –590 µm ground ore slurry in a sulphuric acid medium. Replacement of the stripping reagent is also being considered.

Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.

"Valuation methods are well established for mineral properties with production or imminent production, and include discounted cash flow and comparable transactions. Valuation methods for non-producing mineral properties, however, are more subjective. Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the prefeasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. Different valuation methods may be appropriate for different types of mineral properties.Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage. The market approach is generally appropriate to all types of mineral properties, although it is difficult to find good comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions. Cost approach methods, such as appraised value and geoscience factor, are commonly used for exploration stage properties.Canadian standards and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties are in the process of being finalized by a Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMVal Committee). The CIMVal Standards are intended to be consistent with National Instrument 43-101, which sets regulatory standards of disclosure for mineral projects, and with International Valuation Standards. The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuation be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be disclosed."

Elle est composée de quatre modèles: (1) un modèle de pénétration conduisant à la prévision du temps de forage; (2) un modèle d&apos;estimation de la durée de vie des fournitures; (3) un modèle d&apos;estimation de fa quantité d&apos;énergie consommée; et (4) un modèle de calcul de couts. Elle fait intervenir la résistance en compression uniaxiale de la roche du massif foré, le diamètre des trous, Ie type de perforatrice utilise, fa pression d&apos;air d&apos;opération, la longueur des fleurets, les temps morts associes au forage ainsi que le rendement des compresseurs, des perforatrices et du réseau de distribution de l’air comprime. L &apos;application de la méthodologie est illustrée à l’&apos;aide d&apos;un exemple, suivi d&apos;une courte analyse de sensibilité et d&apos;une brève discussion. ABSTRACTA drilling cost estimation methodology for underground headings is described. This methodology has been developed for percussive hand-held drills. It comprises four models: (1) a drillability model used for the prediction of the drilling period; (2) a model for the prediction of bit and rod lives; (3) an energy model; and (4) a cost model. It makes use of the uniaxial compressive strength ofthe rock drilled, hole diameter, drill type used, operating air pressure, drilling rod length, dead times that may occur during the drilling operation as well as compressor, air distribution network and drilling machine efficiencies. The application of the methodology is illustrated with an example, followed by a short sensitivity analysis and brief discussion."

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been gaining a significant edge in the construction industry over the last decade. BIM allows gathering all building information in one shared database that can help all construction entities better understand, integrate and visualize all work progress from inception to operation of the building. The main purpose behind BIM is to bring all project participants together (Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultant) since the initial stages of a project allowing them to cooperate and work as a team in the promise of an increased productivity, reduced cost, enhanced quality and faster delivery. However, a full-fledged implementation of BIM tools and benefits is not yet achieved in the construction industry and remains a debatable issue for researchers and practitioners in the construction field. This paper aims at assessing BIM awareness and usage in the Lebanese construction industry through conducting interviews with contractors, architects and consultants that are key players in the Lebanese market. A comprehensive literature review about BIM adoption in some developed countries and in the surrounding region is also provided in order to better evaluate the Lebanese industry status in comparison with foreign industries. This research sheds the light on BIM awareness of the different construction parties in the Lebanese market, assesses the extent of its current use, identifies the pertaining implementation challenges, and provides recommendations to enhance BIM role in the Lebanese construction industry.

The formation of oxides during the dehydration of MgC12,6H20, Bischofite, was studied by heating the bischofite over a range of time and temperatures in ambient atmosphere. Using a methanol-leaching technique developed by authors, the oxides that formed were isolated, identified and assayed. Three distinct regions of oxide stability were identified. The oxide produced at dehydration temperatures less than 300 °C was Mg2(OH)3C1,2H2O; at 300 °C, mixtures of MgOHC1 and Mg2(OH)3C1.2H2O were formed and at 400 °C, MgOHC1 was the only oxide produced. The presence of MgO observed in the products of the dehydration of bischofite at temperatures above 400 °C was due to the thermal decomposition of the MgOHC1 that was formed while the sample was heating to over 400 °C.

There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.

"Calcium ferrite slags are currently used in a number of copper-converting processes. Despite the industrial importance of this system the phase equilibria have not been fully investigated. Characterization of this slag system is necessary to improve the control of process parameters, including fluxing and operating temperatures. Recently, a modified experimental method has been developed; this involves rapid quenching of slag samples equilibrated at high temperatures with the resulting phase assemblages analysed using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). In the present study, experiments were completed under controlled temperatures and oxygen partial pressures using CO/C02 or H2/C02 gas mixtures. The investigated slags were supported during equilibration by a substrate of the primary phase. This technique removes the limitations arising from the use of crucibles and facilitates rapid quenching of the melt. Experiments were carried out at 1200°C and 1250°C (1473 Kand 1523 K) and in the composition range 0-40 wt.% Cu20, 0-25 wt. % CaO and 45-80 wt. % Fe203. Liquidus and solidus data are reported for the primary phase field of spinel between the oxygen partial pressures of 10-4.5 to 1 o- 6-5 atm. The analyzed compositions of liquids and solids are used to construct the phase diagram of ""Cu20"" -CaO-""F ez03"" system in equilibrium with metallic copper at fixed oxygen partial pressures."

"Talc ore from Bakertalc, High water, Quebec analyzing about 60% talc, previously dry ground to about 95% minus 53 µm was beneficiated in an 11.4 kg/ h pilot-plant flotation circuit. A concentrate of 95.9% talc (necessary for paper-grade) was obtained at a recovery at 75.3% by employing 53 g/t of Dowfroth 250 collector at pH 9.2; further cleaning increased the grade to 97.2% talc at a recovery of 57.5%.Flotation of fresh ground 60% minus 44 µm ore at a feed rate of 18.6 kg/ h produced a grade of 96.4% talc with a recovery of 78.2%, using Aerofroth 70 collector a six carbon-branch chain alcohol, at pH 9.2.The similarity in the concentrate grade and recovery between pre-ground and fresh-ground ore indicated that it was not neces¬sary to grind to 95% minus 53/2m to achieve comparable selectivity. A grind of 60% minus 44 pm corresponds to 100% minus 300 µm.Flotation retention times obtained with fresh ground ore indicate 33 min. for combined rougher/scavenger, and 15 min. each for the first and second cleaners.Talc-magnesite flotation separation is explained in terms of physico-chemical forces, with reference to surface charge and adsorption mechanisms."

"As I have recently carried out some further research on the Navan lead-zinc deposit data while working in Michel David's research team, I should like to add a few comments on the paper- ""Universal Kriging for Ore-Reserve Estimation- Conceptual Background and Application to the Navan Deposit"", by M. Dagbert and M. David (CIM Bulletin, pp. 80-92, February 1976). The first comment is that since this research has been carried out, important new theoretical advances have been made which make for an easier application of geostatistics to the non-stationary case (see Matheron0l). This is the theory of intrinsic random functions of order k. With the aid of this theory, it has been possible to write computer programs which can carry out automatically universal kriging, although so far such applications have been largely confined to automatic contouring and not to mining problems. However, if approached with care there is no reason why these methods should not be applied to mining problems and, in this case, an automatic study has been done on this data."

"The supply of copper is expected to be at a large deficit in 2012. To recover from these deficits mining companies are required to maximize production and there is no better way to accomplish this than to optimize the use of their mobile mining equipment fleets. To optimize these fleets, each equipment type has to be monitored in its own unique way. Automation would not only improve production, but also minimize the safety risks and eliminate planning errors. The automated vibration monitoring of multiple systems on the shovel can determine the machine’s condition at all times. This reduces unplanned downtime and keeps critical shovels in production. This paper will discuss the details of how shovels can be successfully monitored, continuously. INTRODUCTIONP&H Mining, part of Joy Global, is the world’s largest manufacturer of above-ground mining equipment. Its electric rope shovels, such as Figure 1, with capacities up to 115 tons (104.3 metric tons), are used for high production loading in surface mines; its draglines, such as Figure 2, have bucket capacities to 160 cubic yards (122 cubic meters).
