Nova Scotia has been mining and exporting industrial minerals for over two hundred years. As an industrial mineral producer, this province continues to rank as the number one gypsum mining and exporting region in North America. Mining of many other commodities is ongoing, supplying many local and export markets. In all, excluding aggregate producers, there are nineteen industrial mineral producers operating at thirty sites producing nine commodities including anhydrite, barite, clay and shale, dolomite, gypsum, limestone, salt, silica sand and stone (Fig. I). Numerous aggregate producing operations supply all the province's aggregate requirements and export some of these materials to other regions of Atlantic Canada and as far away as Bermuda (Fig. 2) . Production value of industrial mineral commodities in Nova Scotia for 1982 was $105 million , representing 39% of the total value for all mineral production for the year. Because of the general improvement in the economy, indications are that the 1983 value of production will be higher.

M INE production requires the coordination of the talents of men and the use of equipment. Mine operators maintain a continual surveillance of equipment, looking for improvements and modifications that will benefit them. Few give similar attention to the advances made in the education of mining engineers since they themselves graduated. That is not surprising. Education lacks the advertising budget available to manufacturers. A modification to improve a mechanical contrivance is advertised, and an advertiser's press releases get attention by publishers. The whole program for mining engineering education could be revolutionized and no one, except a few professors, would know about it. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's newly established General Commit-tee on Education can improve that situation. Nine groups of engineers in Canadian universities are trying to give undergraduates an education that will make them useful to the mineral industry as mining engineers. The tabulation offered here (Table I) is an analysis of the distribution of the undergraduate-teacher contact time.

Peak laboratory strength data obtained from low permeability clay shales/rocks often display a bilinear or non-linear failure envelope. In many of these tests pore pressures are not measured because of issues associated with back-saturation prior to confined compressive loading. In such tests the effective state of stress at failure remains unknown and provides room for speculation. The non-linear shape of the failure envelope may have several reasons including the influence of capillary forces or the tendency of a saturated clay shale to dilate as the confining stress is changed. The former stems from sample preservation, preparation or core unloading effects and represents a partly saturated state (i.e., not representative for the in-situ state); the latter represents the response of a saturated material. This contribution discusses these issues based on a data set obtained from Opalinus Clay specimens, and concludes that without a careful back-saturation processes knowledge of the underpinning reasons for the non-linear failure envelope cannot be obtained.

I WILL begin this presentation by citing the annual per capita use of copper in Canada. This is best calculated by taking refinery domestic sales, plus imports of the products of foreign fabricating mills (very little refinery copper is imported), and deducting the exports of Canadian mills. No attempt has been made to estimate the copper content of imports or exports of machinery, motors, etc., but the trade balance here is probably against Canada. In any event, we find that, though varying somewhat since the war, the estimated yearly per capita figure has reached a high of 18 pounds. This is practically on a par with the United States. The rest of the world uses an average of about 2 pounds per capita, yearly, though this includes some countries, such as Sweden, Germany and England, which consume much better than average quantities. It looks, therefore, as if the Canadian copper industry has not (as has been generally charged) been asleep after all.

Autonomous robots are useful for 3D underground mine mapping to avoid human exposure to hazardous spaces. To prepare a precise mine map, a self-navigating robot must navigate an arduous path, avoiding obstacles and sensing the environment. A prototype laboratory-scale robot was built and evaluated through a mock-up in a test mine gallery. It was outfitted with a 2D laser scanner, a stereo camera for obstacle avoidance, and a high-precision, laser-based imaging and digitizing system for collecting 3D point cloud data. Various algorithms were used for scan matching to facilitate simultaneous localization of the robot for mapping.

The details connected with the mining and subsequent handling of Creighton ore were fully covered in a paper presented to the Institute in 1920. The following brief notes describe certain phases of the present practice and show wherein it differs from the practice at that time. These may be summarized under the following headings. (a) Recovery of pillars. (b) Drawing the ore. (c) Change from sub-level tramming to branch-raise system. (d) Chute construction. The present stoping practice is the same as formerly, i.e., fiat-backed shrinkage stopes of 60-foot width, between rib pillars of 15-foot width, extending from the footwall to the hanging-wall. Formerly, when these stopes were completed to the stopes above, they were drawn empty of broken ore, and the 15-foot rib pillars were caved into the stopes and drawn off through the same chutes as were used to draw the ore from the stopes.

This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada's bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. ONE OF the major sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks stretching through the Eastern Townships of Quebec where chrysotile asbestos has been mined continuously since 1878. The productive portion of the belt extends from the town of Asbestos in Shipton town-ship northeastward some 60 miles to the eastern edge of Broughton town-ship. (See map). Twelve mines, currently treating an aggregate of over 60,000 tons of rock daily, produce more than one million tons of asbestos :annually. An equal number of mines are now dormant, having for the most part exhausted their reserves. It is evident from the past and present activity, in this belt that it can look forward to at least half a century or more of large scale production. The Cu/Al composite wires have been widely used in cable industry. Especially in the development of aerospace, the light weight character of wires is particularly important. The wires are fabricated by a drawing process and heat treatment. Mechanical and electrical properties are measured and analyzed. The bending behavior is studied by scanning electron microscope. INTRODUCTION Cu/Al composite is a typical bimetallic composite that has been used in plenty of fields such as automobile and aerospace. The composite has the advantages of excellent conductivity as well as low weight, which cannot be obtained from single copper or aluminum. Industrial products of Cu/Al composite include Cu/Al composite joints (Uscinowicz, R., 2013), Cu/Al bimetallic sheets (Li, X. et al., 2011), Cu/Al flat bar (Wu, Y. & Liu, X. & Xie, J., 2014) and CCA wires (Ahmed N., 1978). CCA wires refer to the composite wires that copper layer concentrically coated on the surface of aluminum core conductor, implementing solid combination of two metals on the interface and forming an integral. At present, the aircraft cable generally use copper or copper alloy conductor, which makes the wire in the aircraft occupy a considerable proportion due to the large density of copper. Therefore, the use of Cu/Al composite wires instead of copper wires for weight loss, is of great significance to the development of aerospace technology industry. Heat treatment is an indispensable procedure to improve plasticity during cold working process, which is of great importance to preparation of wires (Wang, Q. et al., 2008). During the heat treatment, the Intermetallic Compounds (IMCs) are inevitable formed at the contact area of Cu/Al due to the occurrence of diffusion (Lee, S. et al., 2012). According to the results of former researchers, kinds of IMCs were discovered. Antoine Gueydan (2014) identified the formation of three IMCs (Al2Cu, AlCu, and Al4Cu9) at the interface between copper and aluminum after thermal aging. IMCs have a significant effect to the properties of Cu/Al wires. Bending performance is a vital property for the actual application of wires. The brittle IMCs may create a stress concentration that can cause crack initiation during bending process. This work focus on the mechanical properties of Cu/Al composite wires after heat treatment. The effect of various annealing condition on mechanical and electrical properties are studied, in order to find the appropriate annealing conditions, which produce optimal combination properties of Cu/Al clad composite wires. Bending fracture of composite wires is discussed by morphology observation.

The electro-oxidation of 0.1 M ethylene glycol at gold, platinum and gold-platinum alloy electrodes in different heat treatment conditions has been studied in 0.5 M NaOH, at room temperature. Poisoning of all the electrodes occurs. However, the alloy electrodes poison at a faster rate than the pure gold and platinum electrodes. This indicates that the initially higher activity of these electrodes cannot be the result of decreased poisoning through a "third-body" effect.

The prediction of machine utilization time and determining machine performance plays an important role in scheduling and planning tunnel excavation and data base created serve a major role in further applications. In this study, the construction methods of two twin tunnels situated between Basak Konutlari station and Istoc station are summarized. Geology in the study area is composed of fill and weak rock, respectively starting from the surface. The tunnels of 5.6 km in length were excavated with two different earth pressure balance machines (EPBM). Excavation diameters of the EPBMs were 6.564 m. The performance of the machines are analyzed and compared in order to accumulate data for further applications in similar ground conditions in Istanbul. The distance between two twin tunnels is 14 m from center to center and the EPBM in the one tube was almost about 100 m behind the other tube. Segmental lining with 1.4 m of length and 30 centimeters of thickness were used as final support. The overall performances of the two Lovat TBMs are found to be respectively as; the best daily advance rates 30.8 m/day and 30.8 m/day, the best weakly advance rates 115.0 m/day and 153.9 m/day, the best monthly advance rates 388.7 m/day and 400.5 m/day. Total waiting and maintenance times were 25.2 and 16.7 %, respectively.

Predicting the geomechanical response of the shale gas material during hydraulic fracturing operation in the field needs better understanding of their geomechanical behaviour under laboratory testing. Anisotropy is considered as a critical factor during investigation and analysis of deviated boreholes, borehole stability, stress-strain and strength behaviour, generation and propagation of fracture and fluid flow. In this study, compressive elastic modulus (Ec) of the Montney shale has been investigated in two perpendicular directions: unconfined compressive strengths test was conducted on the Montney sample to measure its Ec in the vertical direction. This value then was compared to the Ec value in the horizontal plane (i.e. foliation plane) which was previously measured throughout a Brazilian test by Keneti and Wong (2011). From the results, the representative values of Ec in the vertical and in the horizontal directions were found as 25 GPa and 40 GPa, respectively. Computer tomography technique was also employed for the experimental data interpretation.

GOLGOHAR Mining & Industrial Co., with annual production of 16 million tons, is one of the largest pelletizing and iron ore supplier in Iran that recently this year, because of using mineral processing techniques and extraction of ore body positioning between the metamorphic rocks, about 150 million tons of dry tailings has been created as a result of concentrate production. On the other hand, many environmental issues such as groundwater pollution have been developed by sulfide and silicate gangue minerals, which containing heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. In this study, a new product with high added value has been introduced for the company by identification and extraction of industrial minerals in dry tailings. Also, by removing large masses of dry tailings, environmental pollution sources were gradually eliminated. This method can be used as a modern waste management approach in the world.

This study presents a framework for quality inspection of precast concrete components using the 3D laser scanning technique. As precast concrete-based rapid bridge construction is getting standardized, quality assessment of the precast concrete becomes critical for preventing any failures during the construction process. Moreover, as Building Information Modeling (BIM) gains popularity in the construction industry, autonomous and intelligent inspection systems are needed. Current method for quality control of precast concrete components, however, heavily relies on visual inspection and contacttype measurements, which are time and labor demanding. Also, storage and delivery systems of inspection information such as the procedures and results of quality inspection are lacking. To overcome these limitations of the current quality assessment technique for precast concrete, this study aims to develop a BIM-based framework for efficient quality inspection of precast concrete with the use of a 3D laser scanner. First, we formulate practical guidelines including detailed inspection procedure, selection of optimized scanner and scan location, inspection criteria, and data storage and delivery system. Second, to investigate the applicability of 3D laser scanning to precast concrete quality inspection based on the proposed framework, a case study inspecting quality of a lab-scale object assumed as precast concrete component is presented for detecting defects.

Anodes must have a certain physical and chemical quality in order to provide uniform anodic corrosion and meet the requirements of electrorefining, i.e. to achieve a high current efficiency, low energy consumption, low amount of anode scrap and low effort together with high cathode quality. Various properties of the anodes can be influenced directly by the casting process, which is the interface of pyro- and hydrometallurgy of copper. The aims of anode casting ? high output and long mould lifetimes ? are not consistent with good physical anode quality. The physical requirements of an anode are smooth surfaces, uniform weight and thickness, minimal edge effects, minimal distortion of the body and the lugs, as well as a homogeneous microstructure, in order to achieve uniform dissolution behaviour. The chemical quality of the anode copper is a task of electrorefining operations, but the elemental distribution within the anodes, which should be as homogeneous as possible in order to provide uniform anodic corrosion, can be influenced by the casting process.

In this research, providing the sustainability of production quality was aimed for a quarry which is located in Istanbul western part of Turkey and producing concrete aggregates with different types of rock. First, research field was divided in 3 different areas in accordance with the geological differences and parameters that control their product quality, limit values of standards and effect levels were determined. Concrete aggregate conformity tests which are stated in international standards were applied on samples which were taken from these 3 different areas and physical, geometric and chemical properties of each rock type were revealed. The properties of the 3 different types of rock which were produced in the quary were determined and the binary blends were composed. Blending studies were conducted with linear programming technique. In the linear programming model, the cost of aggregate production was aimed to be minimal. The limit values that meet literature and national standards for usability of aggregates in concrete were defined as constraints in the linear programming model and evaluated with objective functions, thus the most suitable aggregate blends were composed. In conclusion, to provide the sustainability of product quality, the most appropriate product blends were composed for the research field and the usability of this model for those quarries were revealed.

High cyanide consumption during the processing of gold ores with high sulphide minerals can make the typical cyanidation uneconomic. Also cyanide is a toxic material and environmental concerns of cyanide compounds are serious. Optimization of cyanide consumption requires a methodology to estimate the amount of exposed cyanicides, the kinetic of their dissolution and estimation of formation of cyanide complexes which consume the free cyanide. In this paper, a methodology to estimate cyanide consumption by modeling the minerals and gold leaching kinetic based on a liberation model and speciation of all possible cyanide related species in the solution is presented. The results showed that this methodology could successfully estimate the cyanide consumption based on mineralogical data with very lower number of parameters compared to empirical models present in the literature, while it offers the prediction of formation of all cyanide complexes which could be used for optimization purposes.

"This paper presents the geographic and geological setting of Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Mine in south-central Saskatchewan, about 8 miles from the U.S. border. Generally the mine, which is being expanded to four million tons per year, is in an extremely disturbed geological area with severe dewatering problems. The lignite coal, which is strip mined, is supplied directly to an electric power generating station by means of a 7-mile unit-train private railroad.A number of unique reclamation and socio-economic problems were encountered because of the proximity to the U.S. border and because of the lack of experience of the regulatory authorities in projects of this kind. These are described in some detail, as well as the performance of one of the largest draglines in Canada. IntroductionThe Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a publicly owned utility which has the franchise to supply electricity and natural gas to all customers within the boundaries of Saskatchewan.Saskatchewan is a province which can almost be divided in two: the populated southern portion, principally devoted to farming, and the northern portion which is mostly on the Precambrian Shield and consists of lakes, rocks and muskeg. This portion is largely uninhabited except for a number of small villages. However, in the last few years there has been considerable mineral exploration and development, notably for uranium. This has helped considerably in the diversification of the basic agricultural economy of the province.Saskatchewan consists of 251,700 square miles, 761 miles north to south and an average of 335 miles east to west. It has a population of approximately 960,000, giving a population density of four persons per square mile. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation supplies 357,249 electrical arid 221,378 natural gas customers."
