"The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co. and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behaviour of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-48N stope, 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behaviour of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modelled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modelling. In addition, a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.45-48N StopeThe 45-48N stope is located in the 21 ledge between the 6500 and 6650 levels and contains about 233 000 short tons of mineable ore. The orebody lies within the Homestake Formation and is very irregular being approximately 200 ft long and 75 ft wide. Between the 6500 and 6650 levels, it dips from 35 degrees to 60 degrees east with a near-vertical plunge to the south. Mineralization is characterized by arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor gold. The contact between the Homestake and the overlying Ellison Formation creates a plane of weakness along localized graphitic layers. The footwall dips at approximately 60 degrees but between 100 ft and 120 ft above the 6650 level , the hanging wall flattens to almost 20 degrees causing a significant mining problem."

"In recent years, computer based ""expert systems"" have been taking on large complex tasks for which no exact algorithmic solutions are feasible; tasks previously reserved for human experts requiring empirical knowledge, judgment, experience, developing a ""best solution "" by the use of plausible reasoning. Mining method selection is an appropriate area for the application of an expert system because extensive and detailed knowledge is required to make a ""best"" interpretaion of frequently ambiguous geological information. The expert system model presented here would enable users to apply expert knowledge to the evaluation of methods for coal deposits mineable by underground methods. IntroductionIn an increasingly complex and specialized world, human expertise spanning scientific, economic, social and political issues plays an increasingly important role in all branches of engineering. This is especially true of mining engineering. The number of scientific and professional disciplines involved in mine planning and evaluation, illustrates the problem. A conservative list includes geology, geophysics, geotechnics, hydrology, mining, environment, and economics.Engineers are almost obliged to be experts in at least one of the above disciplines if they are to handle the volume of information required in the planning process. Although computers have become indispensable tools in many endeavours, there is continued reliance on the human expert's ability to identify and synthesize these diverse factors, to form judgments, evaluate alternatives , and make decisions . This is especially true with regard to problems that are not easily amenable to precise formulations.The precious resource of human expert is also fragile and transient. The departure of a crucial expert from an organization ma y cause serious dislocations. Senior experienced people impart their knowledge of younger colleagues, but the demand for their talent may not leave sufficient time for such educational efforts. A thermohydrodynamic computer code has been used to simulate dust explosions. For sulphide dusts, the thermodynamic predictions are used to investigate the effect of dust concentration, mineral content and inert materials as well as the quantity of sulphur dioxide produced. It was found that the amount of oxygen available for the explosion is very important and that the dust concentration which gives maximum explosion pressures is obtained at zero or slightly negative oxygen balance values. The sulphide minerals were found to have the following explosibility sequence: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, covellite, chalcocite and galena, which is in agreement with mine experience. The results show that theoretical calculations can be used to predict explosion pressures and toxic gases produced by a dust explosion and therefore they can assist in the design of protective measures .

The process modules available are:• crushing by jaw and cone crushers;• pre-concentration by the Dyna Whirl Pool dense media system;• grinding by wet rod or ball mills;• separation by gravity, magnetic, flotation or leaching-CVP adsorption methods;• dewatering by lamella or conventional thickeners and vacuum filters.To form complete plants, auxiliary equipment is also available, such as:• bins, feeders and conveying systems;• power generator units;• water tank and pump for process water;• interconnecting piping and cables;• erection and service tool kits;• set of spare and wear parts.For mine sites with rainy or winter conditions, a plastic tent with air heater can be supplied to cover the ore dressing equipment. Each module is workshop assembled complete with slurry pumps, internal pipe work, electric wiring with plug-in connections, hoses, etc., all arranged for quick and simple connection between the units. "IntroductionThe western region of North America has long been considered a dynamic market supporting such diversified industries as lumber, agriculture, cement, and electronics. In recent years however, the region has also been the focus of a great deal of activity in the extender and filler mineral s business from companies seeking to position themselves to take advantage of the large demand for these materials both here and abroad.Extender and Filler MineralsExtender and filler mineral s include 15different products used in numerous end uses. The nine most important extenders and fillers are listed in Table I. These products range in price from under $50 a ton to over $4,000 a ton and basically represent the following three different types of minerals:Particulate products-Calcium carbonate; Kaolin; Silica.Platy minerals-Talc (Montana, Canada); Mica.Fibrous minerals-Talc (California, Eastern U.S .A.);Wollastonite.What distinguishes these products from other industrial minerals? For one thing, an important feature of extender and filler minerals is that they are used primarily in such consumer non-durable good s as paper, paint, plastics, sealants, and rubber which traditionally do not react as violently to swings in the economic cycle. In addition, these minerals are sold principally on key physical properties, usually brightness, particle size and shape, oil absorption, and hardness. As part of the physical minerals segment of industrial minerals, extenders and fillers are traditionally the most stable group and typically the most profitable. Studies by C.H. Kline over the past decade on extender and filler minerals has revealed historic average profitability (expressed as a percentage on sales) nearly double that of most other industrial mineral s.The demand for these minerals in the western region (Fig. 1), closely follow s the areas of greatest population concentration. These markets include pulp and paper, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and paint, around Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. Other significant markets for extender and filler minerals in western North America include joint cements, carpet backing, and plastics, mainly PVC pipe."

"There has been a number of new developments in British Columbia's industrial minerals field over the past few years. Several new industrial operations were started to diversify the line of British Columbia mineral production by magnesite, perlite and fuller's earth. Industry activities and geological projects have identified occurrences of rare earth minerals, niobium, kaoline, fireclay and zeolites. The Geological Survey Branch significantly improved its database on industrial minerals. New geological concepts based on recent work are opening a number of new opportunities f or further industrial minerals' exploration and development in British Columbia.IntroductionTraditionally, the value of industrial minerals produced in British Columbia in any given year comprises between 100/0and 15% of the combined value of minerals, coal, petroleum and natural gas. Over the years a wide variety of industrial minerals has been produced , often with different levels of marketings success. For some products, such as dimension stone and clay or shale products, initial strong demand gradually dissipated; for others such as asbestos and magnesite, new discoveries or new industrial activities created demand and new markets . In some cases, such as fluorite , talc, pyrophyllite and perlite, wider use has been prevented by small size, poor quality or remote location of the deposits. Also, British Columbia , with 2.6 million inhabitant s, provides only a limited market and the industry therefore has to look beyond provincial borders."

"The Suncor Oil Sands Mine located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, produces about 80000 m' per day of tailings waste which must be disposed of economically in an environmentally acceptable manner. To date, this has been accomplished by impounding the high water content tailings wastes behind large dykes, many of which approach 100 m in height .The dykes are constructed using suitable overburden material stripped prior to the mining of the oil sands feed and/ or the coarse sandy fraction of the tailings waste itself. Although the above is common practice at many mining operations, the large volumes handled and the resultant costs require designs to be meticulously fine-tuned toward the optimum. As a result, considerable effort is expended on planning, designing and construction, and performance monitoring. The lack of precedent experience (Suncor pioneered oil sands mining), coupled with the realities of long, harsh winters and a variety of troublesome site conditions and construction materials, has led to some very unique dyke construction.This paper overviews current tailings disposal plans as welt as some of the key issues related to the design, construction and performance of these large dykes."

Shovels and excavators have significant blind spots due to their large sizes, increasing the chances of collision with other surrounding equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, and dozers. While a camera surveillance system is very useful in preventing collision, it can benefit from two additional features: (i) the ability to display the distance of the closest object within the view, and more importantly (ii) the ability to warn the operator if objects are getting too close. After a comparison between few different technologies, it is explained how these features can be provided by integrating rugged pulsar radar sensors with a camera system. The specific radar technology is already field proven in the harsh mining environments. Motion Metrics International Corp. has developed this exact product, which combines its 4-camera surveillance system (ViewMetricsTM) with a series of rugged radar sensor elements, named ViewMetricsTM-Radar. The radar system employs intelligent CAN bus communication to reduce wiring, hence improving hardware reliability with built-in troubleshooting features. A USB connection is the only hardware bridge between the radar sensors and the embedded computer. As such, an existing ViewMetricsTM system can be easily upgraded to ViewMetricsTM-Radar. As addition of new interfaces to the cab could result in operator distraction, this paper explains how ViewMetricsTM-Radar reduces distraction compared to other radar collision prevention systems.

As electronic technology continues to evolve there is a growing need to develop processes which recover valuable material from antiquated technology. This need follows from the environmental challenges associated with the recovery of raw materials and fast growing generation of electronic waste. Although present in small quantities in electronic devices, the availability of raw materials such as rare earths and precious metals becomes critical for the production of high tech electronic devices and the development of green technologies (i.e. wind turbines, electric motors, and solar panels). Therefore, the proper recycling and processing of electronic waste presents an opportunity to stabilize the market of critical materials, providing a proper disposal and treatment of a hazardous waste stream. This paper describes the development and techno-economic assessment of a comprehensive process for the recovery of value and critical materials from electronic waste. This hydrometallurgical scheme aims to selectively recover several value streams (base metals, precious metals, and rare earths) present in electronic waste. The economic feasibility for the recovery of rare earths from electronic waste is mostly driven by the efficient recovery of precious metals, such as Au and Pd (ca. 80 % of the total recoverable value). Rare earth elements contained in magnets (speakers, vibrators, and hard disk storage) can be recovered as a mixture of rare earth oxides which can later be reduced to the production of new magnets.

The corrosion resistance of die-cast and freely-solidified and electromagnetically-stirred thixocast AZ91D alloy has been studied using electrochemical noise technique in a 0.05M NaCI solution at pH 6.1 and 25°C. Specimens polished at different depths were immersed for a period of 75 min in order to assess the influence of the microstructure on corrosion kinetics and morphology. At depths between 10 and 50 µm (skin), all specimens showed general non-uniform corrosion with the lowest corrosion resistance. Between 100 and 200 µmn (interior skin), the observed corrosion was accompanied by superficial undefined pits due to metastable pitting. The corrosion form for 100-200 µm gave the best corrosion resistance. Stable pitting corrosion was observed beyond 400 µm deep on the bulk specimens. The skin of all thixocast specimens prepared billets showed a more corroded surface than that of die-cast. The interior skin as well as the bulk specimens showed better performance than that of the die-cast specimens.

"Modular Mining's computerized LHD position monitoring and dispatching system commenced operation at the De Beers Finsch Mine in mid- J99J. A sophisticated blend of proven and new technologies links the dispatcher at the workstation console on the surface with the LHD operators several hundred metres below. The dispatcher allocates each LHD to a priority tip and loading drive based on instructions provided by the miners and shift bosses underground. LHD operators receive tip and loading drive allocations on the vehicle computer console which communicates data via a Leaky Feeder radio network. The operators interact with the console to notify the dispatcher of delays, breakdowns, and changes in tip and tunnel status. The underground terminal displays allow shift bosses to monitor the progress of the LHDs as they pass infrared beacons (IRs) located in the tips loading drives and rim tunnel main haulage ways. The terminals also provide on-line statistics for the current and previous shifts. Future enhancements include optimized dispatching and interfacing to a PLC system controlling ventilation. Further, token ring-based loop UHF radios are being investigated as an alternative to the Leaky Feeder data radio network. IntroductionFinsch first contacted Modular about an LHD monitoring and dispatching system in late 1988. At that time, Modular declined a request for a formal quotation but agreed to perform an engineering feasibility study. The study was issued in mid-1989 and confirmed Finsch's belief that an underground system could be developed with technology available at that time. A contract for the system was signed the following year and, in May of 1991, the system began operation. By the end of 1991, LHDs on both production levels of the mine were under the control of the system."

"The Island Mountain mine is at the southeast end of Island mountain; across Jack of Clubs lake from the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine.; The orebodies consist of quartz veins and pyritic replacement deposits in limestone. To December 31; 1944; there has been mined 296; 273 tons of quartz-vein ore averaging about 0.34 oz. gold a ton; and 101; 002 tons of sulphide ore averaging about 0.83 oz. gold a ton; a total of 397; 275 tons averaging 0.46 oz. From this; 175; 985 fine oz. of gold and about 26; 450 fine oz. of silver were recovered; having a value of $6; 510; 521.More than 95 per cent of the production has come from a band 500 feet wide along the contact of the Rainbow and overlying Baker members and extending about 100 feet into the latter. Evidence that the Rainbow belongs stratigraphically above the Baker is presented later in this paper. Both members are most variable lithologically, and individual beds and whole series of beds pinch out in short distances. In part, at least, this is due to squeezing out incidentally to intense folding. No section can be claimed with assurance to be really representative. However, both memb.ers are composed predominantly of quartzitic rocks. Both contain argillaceous quartzite, argillite, limy quartzite, limy argillite, limestone (marble), and minor amounts of highly ankeritized rocks believed to be igneous sills possibly originally approaching diorite in composition."

The rate of liquid copper deoxidation during top blowing of reducing flames has been investigated using a high capacity thermogravimetric unit at 1200 °C. For 1 kg copper samples, it was observed that the rate of deoxidation was proportional to the flow rate of the reducing reagent (H2 or CO). Under similar experimental conditions, it was found that H2 is more effective than CO even though both have similar thermodynamic potential to deoxidize liquid copper. The rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with reducing 0 2/CH4 flames was measured for 0 2/CH4 molar ratios of 1.5 to 2. The deoxidation rate depends on the 0 2/CH4 ratio and decreases as it approaches the stoichiometric ratio (02/CH4 = 2). Estimation of the rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with top blowing flames based on the thermodynamic composition ofH2 and CO in the product gases, agrees well with measured values.

The subject chosen for this paper is not a new one, but the subject matter is so extensive that something new can always be said .about it. We are just beginning to realize how little is actually known about the character of Alberta coal, except for a few general facts. The object of this paper is not to explain that our previous information, in whole or in part, on the coal resources of Alberta, has been incorrect, but rather to present some new facts obtained as a result of recent study in the field and in the laboratory. As field investigation continues the problem of determining the character of a coal seam for any great distance laterally becomes more and more complex. Our present knowledge of Alberta coal deposits should not be discussed before due reference is made to those great pioneers who blazed the trails for later geologists, by recording their observations on the general geology of Alberta. Geologists, to-day, particularly those of us who are striving, year after year, to unravel the mysteries of stratigraphy, palaeontology, and structure, in so far as these are related to the coal resources of Alberta, fully realize our indebtedness to those three trail-makers, Dawson, McConnell, and Tyrrell. Had these geologists not recorded their observations correctly, nor interpreted the broad geological facts contained in Nature's book, with still uncut pages, how much slower would have been the progress of our coal knowledge in the succeeding years. It is true that many of the interpretations given to observations by these pioneers have had to be changed as a result of closer studies, but we must also expect that the geological interpretation from present day observations will be changed by future workers, as Nature's book is read and re-read.

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "With the requirements of air pollution codes becoming more and more critical, the role of the ventilation engineer in industry has become an extremely important one. The ventilation engineer must provide the expertise for the selection of equipment and the design of systems which will reduce pollution to an acceptable level. Because pollution control systems involve considerable capital and operating expense, he must have the ability to select, from a wide range of products, the collector which will provide the required performance with a minimum of down time for maintenance. This paper discusses the principles of wet collection and the forces used to separate particulate matter from a gas stream. Important factors in the selection of equipment, such as collection efficiency, horsepower requirements and water consumption for the various types of collectors, are discussed in detail, as well as the construction features normally incorporated to circumvent potential problems."

"Mine-shaft wire-rope discard regulations include, among other criteria, a limited amount of permissible loss-of-breaking-strength (LBS). Currently, this parameter is estimated on the basis of non-destrutive-testing (NDT) with electro-magnetic (EM) type instruments. This paper analyses the accuracy with which these estimates have, so far, been obtained in practice.It concludes that while certain types of testers have produced better results than others, the desired accuracy level has not been attained. Also discussed are the putative reasons for this situation, and appropriate actions that the mining industry might wish to take."

"The Apex Mine is currently scheduled to be brought back into production by Hecla in the first quarter of1990. Its projected productivity rate will be exceptionally high for a small underhand cut and fill mine.The ore mined at the Apex Mine occurs within a pipe-like structure as a series of iron oxides containing both gallium and germanium, plus significant amounts of silver, zinc, lead, and copper.Ground conditions in and around the ore zone have dictated that unique approaches be utilized. To date, these have included a prototype 0.5 cu. yd diesel LHD, and the use of fibrous shotcrete in 4ft by 7ft headings, and the first pneumatically-placed cemented backfill in North America. Above all else, it is the combination of new technologies with a small and dedicated workforce which has allowed for the successful development of this ore body.IntroductionThe Apex Mine is an example of the typical small underground project. It has high grade, but low tonnage and is deposited in poor ground. In such cases, conventional planning and thinking generally results in an uneconomical evaluation and negative production decision. Fortunately, some unconventional thinking was allowed to take place during the planning and evolution of the Apex Mine development. The result now serves as an example of how such unconventional thinking can lead to the type of innovations described below.The job necessitated the development and use of new equipment and materials to execute a highly flexible underhand cut and fill mine design/pneumatic backfill concept, that must be constantly modified as different than assumed conditions become evident in and around the ore zone."
