Bench-scale selective-flocculation tests were conducted on samples of Florida phosphate and Western phosphate process tailings to recover upgraded phosphate concentrates. After physical and mineralogical characterization, the slurry samples were treated with a broad suite of flocculants with a range of molecular weights and anionic functional groups. Parameters investigated included pH, dispersant and flocculant types, and dose; conditioning parameters and settling times were, for the most part, held constant. Where selectivity was achieved, phosphate minerals remained dispersed, whereas silicate minerals flocculated and settled. Single-stage tests using reagents with low to medium anionic characteristics produced upgraded phosphate concentrates at moderately elevated pH. Two- stage site-blocking tests, in which low-molecular-weight flocculants were used as site-blocking agents, gave improved results.

Factors that have influenced mineralization in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont provinces in Alabama are not clearly understood. Lithology and structure are recognizable factors in the Valley and Ridge province, where barite, lead, and zinc sulfides occur in structurally complex areas of Cambrian and Ordiovician carbonate rocks. Metal mineralization in the Piedmont province indicates a complex relationship with factors such as favorable host rock, proximity to intrusive or high-grade metamorphic rocks, several metamorphic events and separate or related structural events. Lineaments, as used herein, refer to naturally occurring linear features consisting of topographic, vegetative or soil tonal alignments that are at least partially continuous for distances greater than a mile (Lattman, 1958). Lineaments in Alabama were first recognized by J. G. Newton in 1970, using Apollo 9 series photographs. Subsequent studies delineated the features (Powell and others, 1970) and suggested relationships to structural and hydrologic factors. More recent work has explored relationships to mineralization, environmental geology and the tectonic framework of the Appalachians (Drahovzal and Copeland, 1970; Drahovzal and Neathery, in press). The lineaments recognizable on Apollo 9 photography probably represent fractures, some of which may reflect geofractures that bound major basement blocks. The lineaments defined in Alabama range from about 4 miles to nearly 200 miles in length. Most of the lineaments are straight, but some are arcuate; some appear to terminate at the intersections with other lineaments but most cross each other with no offset. Some lineaments pass through areas of structural disruption such as terminations, offsets and changes in structural style, but others show no such relationships. This presentation will define what talc is, how it is mined and processed, and how talc is used in the paper industry. It will also give you some idea about who Luzenac America is and from where it came. Luzenac America was formed in July, 1992 as a result of the acquisition of the talc assets of Cyprus Minerals by RTZ of the United Kingdom. Cyprus Industrial Minerals was then merged with the other RTZ talc interests under the Luzenac name. Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

The engineering geology of the Rio Tinto Borax Boron Mine creates challenges in providing practical slope design recommendations to mine planning engineers. Low strength sedimentary units interbedded with very low strength lakebed clays surround the orebody. Faulting has offset and juxtaposed these units into variably adverse orientations, while groundwater is compartmentalized both vertically and horizontally within fault blocks. A collective program of geologic data collection, geomechanical strength testing, geologic modeling, slope depressurization, confirmation of underground stope locations, and documentation of slope behavior provides vital information for design investigations and sensitivities. Analysis results lead to risk assessments and operational procedures that add value to the business by optimizing slope configurations and minimizing risk.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. The MP1000 was also designed to operate with a head throw that can be greater than the equivalent Symons design. The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson's life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson's basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson's practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost-effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

The method of conditional simulation is easily implemented on the personal computer when the LU decomposition algorithm of Davis (1987) is employed. This algorithm is fairly compact, yet can generate moderate-sized simulations in a few minutes on a 80286 or 80386-based personal computer. The application of conditional simulation presented here is to generate possible ore inventories from a limited amount of exploration sampling. The simulations can then he examined to decide if the potential inventories are sufficiently attractive to proceed with further exploration. An example showing one application of this approach is presented.

An unusually pure grade of rutile and several grades of aplite rock are produced in a unique mining and mineral dressing operation in Hanover County, Virginia. The ore body is an aplite rock of gnessic structure, having a sari ace exposure extending over several hundred acres, heavily leathered and containing rutile, ilmenite, and other titanium and iron minerals. The physical nature and mineral composition of the ore body has permitted the use of a relatively economical and unusual processing circuit. The flowsheet was designed to take full advantage of the remarkable liberation of the minerals at relatively coarse rinds. It permits flexibility in changing the product mix, and maintains high levels of purity in both rutile and aplite rack. The mineral processing is discussed in some detail below.

Water is increasingly recognized as a critical issue for sustainable development, becoming as important as carbon to corporate responsibility and reputation. Although the cement industry’s overall ‘water footprint’ is relatively small compared to other sectors, the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD/CSI) has recognized the importance of water and the need to take actions towards efficient water management, with developing standardizing practices and employing a risk-based assessment approach, mostly at local level where individual facilities and activities can have implications for other water users in the area. Sharrcem, a member of the Titan Cement Group, has made significant investments to upgrade its production facilities, the technological process and apply environmentally friendly technologies. Under this frame, Sharrcem implemented a project for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Cement Plant facilities, which has been successfully operating since early 2016. This paper discusses the technology applied at the new WWTP and the results achieved already, with significant improvement in the quality of the treated water, as compared to the previous situation where untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the nearby Dimce Stream. The WWTP project is a major investment of Sharrcem that aims to improve the quality of the discharged water effluents and thus prevent potential river pollution and overall protect the environment and the health of Sharrcem employees and local community. The WWTP operates with the Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) technology, is fully automated and has been also connected with few households of the neighboring community to treat also their sewage water. The plant can be expanded in the future – to connect with additional households - without increasing the size of the treatment tanks. One of the benefits of this project is that by removing a variety of contaminants from water it becomes usable again, depending on the nature of the contaminants and the end use of the water treated. According to the monitoring results the treated water that comes out of the WWTP fully meets quality requirements according to the EU and local limit values standards

In 1981 a Zn-Ag-Pb deposit was discovered in the vicinity of Molai, Greece. Subsequently, it was determined to be of the Kuroko type. The geology of various areas in the southeast Peloponnesean Peninsula is similar to that of the Molai deposit. Since favorable geologic criteria are present, absent, or unknown in varying degrees in all areas, it was deemed necessary to classify and rank the prospective areas according to the level of information available. For each level of information, an ore discovery model based on pragmatic exploration criteria was developed, enabling the favorability of occurrence to be calculated for each area. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the probabilities, the input data consisting of quantitative and qualitative estimates of the geologic criteria for each area. Three levels of information were modeled : Level A consisted of 9 criteria, level B of 12 criteria, and level C of 20 criteria. The three levels of information were tested on the Molai area. The results exceeded expectations, showing the gen¬eral trends which control mineralization at the lowest level of information. With an increase in the level of information, geological trends become more evident and a differentiation can be made between areas containing Cu mineralization, exhibiting a low probability, and areas likely to contain Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization. The models were then applied to the neighboring areas - only level A and B were available.

Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The US Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance for mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time-study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index- based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailing retreatment circuit. The preaeration circuit reduces reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailing retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

Flotation chemists have long sought to unravel the mechanisms of carboxylate collector adsorption by semi-soluble salt minerals. In particular, the adsorption density of adsorbed carboxylates, adsorption kinetics, speciation (chemisorbed, physisorbed), orientation, and conformation are of interest. Given the importance of these phenomena in establishing the hydrophobic state at a mineral surface, in-situ surface spectroscopy studies certainly are justified. Such measurements traditionally have been difficult to perform. However, beginning in the late 1980s, a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic technique was developed that has allowed for the acquisition of a wealth of detailed information concerning carboxyiate adsorption in semi-soluble salt flotation systems. The technique, internal rejection spectroscopy using single-crystal internal reflection elements, is reviewed, as it applies to semi-soluble salt flotation systems.

This paper presents an analysis of the heat transfer process between the mine ventilation air and the frozen rockmass. The heat transfer model takes into account not only by the mutual change in air and rockmass temperatures, but also by the phase change of ice-water- ice. Based on the analysis presented here it is concluded that the mine thermal regime can be regulated by having the air enter the mine through mined-out excavations or development airways.

Underground mine planning is largely manual and can demand considerable resources to generate a working plan and to perform limited tests of sensitivity to variations in geological and mining conditions. It is possible to use computer aided mine planning to automate many of the manual procedures to allow the planner to evaluate a number of layouts, extraction strategies, and schedules. his paper examines the simulation and scheduling of an under- ground coal mine operation through the-use of on- screen graphics. The simulation will provide a basis for predicting productivity and other relevant information over a specified number of shifts. The software developed is extremely user friendly and reduces the tedium of repetitive manual calculations inherent to mine planning and drafting to a minimum, thus offering considerable savings in an area that is widely recognized as extremely labor intensive.

The Zadra, AARL and organic elution processes and variations of them are presently widely used to recover gold from activated carbon. Despite this the study of the kinetics of elution have received relatively little attention. It is the aim of this study to investigate the rate processes taking place during elution in both inorganic and organic solutions. Batch adsorption and elution rate and equilibrium experiments were performed. The spatial concentration of gold inside carbon particles at various stages of the adsorption and elution processes were measured with a scanning electron microscope using an image analyzer to control and manage the micro-analysis data. The activated carbon particles exhibited film and intra-particle mass transfer rate- controlled behaviour during adsorption in a caustic aqueous solution at 95°C. Elutions in the aqueous caustic acetone solution at 30°C and the caustic aqueous solution at 95°C were unaffected by change in stirring rate. Elution was modelled by desorption reaction rate-control at the outer surface of the carbon particle. Adsorption and elution isotherms under duplicated solution conditions showed reasonable agreement for the inorganic solution and a large disparity for the organic solution.
