INTRODUCTION Mined underground chambers specifically designed for the purpose of storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at ambient temperatures have been in use for over thirty years. The first caverns were developed by Warren Petroleum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948, for its plants in Texas. The basic concept of an LPG-storage cavern is to create a space in an impervious formation at a depth sufficiently below the water table so that if any movement of fluid occurs the ground water will enter rather than the gas escape from the cavern. In the past, the primary reason for LPG storage underground has been its attractive cost advantages over steel storage on the surface. At current prices the cost of storing 7.949 ML (50,000 barrels) would be equivalent, whether stored on the surface or underground; whereas 79.494 ML (500,000 barrels) of storage underground costs only one-fifth of surface storage. It is usually uneconomical to excavate less than 79.494 cu m (50,000 barrels) of storage space. The fixed costs - engineering, mainshaft and ventilation shaft - are a substantial part of the total cost, whereas the incremental costs for excavating additional storage are relatively low. Recent concern over the hazards posed by the handling and storage of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a new interest in the underground storage of these gases. The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Construction works for this new line have been divided by the railroad administration into eight sections. Five of these have already been committed to joint ventures. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

Production of mine backfill from the tailings produced in a proposed Crandon concentrator is described. A process has been developed capable of producing suitable fill for the mining method selected for the Crandon orebody. It maximizes the placement of pyrite underground as fill and segregates tailings into pyrite and nonsulfide fractions. To determine the suitability and engineering characteristics of the backfill product for use underground, laboratory and physical stope simulation model testing was conducted. The results of the testing and the application of those results to the design of the backfill system ultimately affecting mine geometry and subsequent mine production will be presented.

INTRODUCTION Tunnel boring machines in non-abrasive competent rock with little or no water have set new performance standards in the driving of tunnels. However, when the machines have hit blocky or running ground, they have encountered difficulties. The success of a tunnelling machine is usually due to a thorough geological investigation which accurately describes the rock conditions, a well designed tunnel support system, and a tunnel boring machine designed to cope with these conditions. In some cases machines have had to be modified in the tunnel after the machine had commenced boring, because geological conditions were not correctly anticipated before tunnelling began. The features described herein are not a panacea for all conditons, and some of them, like an auxiliary thrust system that thrusts off a precast invert segment requires pre-planning of work on the part of the contractor. CUTTERHEAD DESIGN Figure 1 shows typical cutterheads of ten to fifteen years ago. Note the large buckets and large openings between the buckets. These large openings were considered necessary to gain easier access through the cutterhead for cutter changes. The standard cutter in those days was an 11 inch or 12 inch cutter with small bearings, and was generally a delicate tool for the duty it was to perform. INTRODUCTION There are currently around fifteen companies in the United States and Europe manufacturing hard rock tunneling machines. In recent years upwards of 200 hard rock tunnels of lengths up to 12 miles and diameters to the order of 30 ft have and are being successfully driven by over 100 different machines. It has been predicted that within the next decade over 2,000 miles of tunnels will be driven for transportation purposes in the United States alone (OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling, Washington, 1970) and it is expected that eventually most tunnels including mine drivages will be excavated by machines. All tunneling machines have certain common basic functions; thrust is applied to drive or hold the rock cutting tools into the face, and torque is applied to rotate the cutting tools over the face so that they can continuously break out rock. The speed of head rotation, together with the torque requirement, determines the cutter head power. (The power required to push the head forward is usually negligible.) There are many factors which determine how successfully a given tunneling machine will perform in a given rock but one of the most important is effective utilization of cutter head power. This paper is a review of the specifications and performance of hard rock tunneling machines, obtained from manufacturers' catalogs, published literature, talks with manufacturers and visits to operating machines throughout the United States and Europe.

The Balsam Meadow Hydroelectric Project is currently under construction in central California. TMCI Construction, Inc. was subcontracted to perform the shaft enlargement and lining required for the elevator, surge and power shafts. Involved in the initial work was slashing the elevator and surge shaft into a previously excavated borehole. The elevator shaft then required a reinforced concrete lining and structural steel installation. Throughout the course of construction, numerous design changes occurred, necessitating a lining in both the power and surge shafts. These changes caused TMCI to design two underground hoisting systems to install these additional linings. An analysis of the construction methods used is now given. Introduction The Balsam Meadow Project consists of an underground hydroelectric powerhouse designed to provide additional capacity and energy to the Southern California Edison system during critical peak demand periods, and has the capability for pumped storage operation. The project is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains about 55 miles northeast of Fresno. The project will divert water presently flowing from Huntington Lake to Shaver Lake to power a single 200 megawatt turbine generator. The approach used to the shaft slashing was governed partially by the strict CAL-OSHA requirements, which became more stringent after the recent Helms' Creek accident. A scaled down sinking plant was used to minimize economic risk and to simplify the excavation and lining scheme.

Early in 1972, Rocky Mountain Energy Company approached MARCONAFLO with a unique request for assistance. They controlled a series of scattered ore deposits in a remote section of Wyoming which had become increasingly valuable despite their relatively small size, great depth and low grade. At the time, MARCONAFLO was in the process of developing a tailings reclaim system which was based on the use of submersible capsules. It appeared that this basic concept might be adapted to slurry uranium ores and pump them to the surface through a bored hole. This presentation will review for you the development of this unique and potentially very important application of MARCONAFLO technology. This first slide (SLIDE 1) depicts the total mining concept envisioned by MARCONAFLO and Rocky Mountain Energy Company. A series of six self-contained mining units would be positioned through boreholes into the ore strata. An oscillating MARCONAJET would direct a high pressure jet stream into the orebody and put it into a slurry which would flow back to a slurry pump. The slurry would then be pumped to the surface and to a collection tank from which it would be transferred to processing. Both the MARCONAJET and the slurry pump would be actuated and controlled by means of a hydraulic power console mounted on the trailer behind the service tower. By means of a high pressure water pump also mounted on the trailer, return water from processing would be delivered to the MARCONAJET to slurry the ore. Tailings would be returned to a backfill unit for redepositing in the mined-out cavities. A drill rig would precede the mining, and it was estimated that this configuration would represent an optimum system for most effective equipment utilization.

Continuous Mining Systems Limited have developed an efficient, high-capacity, in-line loading unit capable of handling shot rock in tunnel driveages at extraction rates up to 970 tonnes (1,000 tons) per hour. A smaller 408 tonnes (450 tons) per hour loader is also available These in-line loading units called "Osciloaders"® provide a continuous flow of material from the muck pile to an anciliary conveyance eliminating the cyclic or interrupted movement noramlly associated with gathering arm or bucket type loaders. The osillating lip fluidizes the material, reduces the penetration force required and facilitates and regulates the material flow onto the adjacent conveyor. The conveyor is wide and accommodates very large material with ease, transporting and elevating it to a height suitable for a waiting conveyance at the rear of the machine. The "Osciloader"® is currently being utilized for production mining by a major company in Sudbury, Ontario. Both truck and conveyor anciliary haulage are being utilized. The paper describes the development of the loader and how it may be applied in tunnelling applications.

INTRODUCTION Several recent technological improvements - largely by the convey-or industry - have increased the importance of inclined shaft construction for developing mines where ore deposits are relatively shallow. With these newer systems, long conveyor haulages are economically feasible, allowing mine owners to justify the expense of the inclined shaft or slope. What this actually means is that they can now take advantage of the versatility this construction offers. For example, haulage capacity can be changed by conveyor additions or replacements; equipment can be trammed to and from the surface quickly without costly breakdown and re-assembly; and a walkway is available for workers in the event of an emergency. Now, another innovation may accelerate this type of construction, the use of tunnel boring machines or "Mechanical Moles" to dig the slopes. While conventional. drill and blast methods have been used previously to build inclined shafts, the tunnel boring machine technique offers greater production rates, higher safety and a better, much cleaner bore. McGuire Shaft & Tunnel Corporation of Ft. Smith, Arkansas recently started such a slope project - the first ever bid by a contractor based on the use of a "Mechanical Mole".

The White Mesa uranium/vanadium mill is six miles south of Blanding, UT, on the Colorado Plateau, which has historically spawned more than 200 uranium mines. As uranium prices approached an all-time high during the mill planning period, Energy Fuels Nuclear Inc. anticipated the reopening of many of these mines, whose low grade ore suddenly looked economic. The company located the White Mesa mill close to these mines, to minimize hauling distances to the mill and give vendors added incentive to reopen or expand mine operations. A receptive local community, a relatively unencumbered trip through the regulatory maze, and some mill circuit innovations all helped to make the White Mesa mill a well functioning reality. From a strategic standpoint, and to begin ore stockpiling as early as possible, Energy Fuels constructed two ore buying stations and began receiving ore in early 1977. The buying stations were located at Hanksville and at what is now the Blanding mill site. Ore receipts at Hanksville did not materialize as anticipated and the facility has since been closed. The Blanding ore buying station is now an integral part of the milling operation. All ores, whether company, vendor, or for toll milling, are received at the Blanding station. The Blanding site was central to the plateau mines, and was well received by area residents, who encouraged the introduction of industry to the area. Residents viewed mill construc¬tion as an economic blessing and were prepared to accept the associated im¬pacts. Energy Fuels hired as many local people as possible for mill opera¬tions.

Introduction Bulk commodity prices are ever increasing. This forces buyers and sellers in world markets to look more carefully at methods for obtaining an accurate accounting of commodity transactions in commerce and materials utilization in processes. Weighing and sampling inaccuracies can result in loss of income, product quality, and cost controls. So weighing and sampling accuracies are extremely important. They are the key components of managing the quantity and quality control aspects of bulk materials handling. This article will confine itself to the weighing systems and will deal with various aspects of system design, calibration, and operations. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field. Weighing methods To measure the gravimetric pull on a body being weighed (the load), the gravimetric force must be countered by an opposing force. Measuring this counter-balancing force thus becomes the measurement of weight. The conventional even-arm balance shows the concept of balancing an unknown mass with an equal known counterbalancing mass. But the loads encountered in industry generally range up to many thousands of pounds. So it is obvious that the even-arm approach is not practical. Thus, with the exception of direct load-bearing load cells, most of the weighing equipment uses some form of lever system. This is usually a combination of first- and second-class levers, to gain a mechanical advantage. These levers permit the load force to be counter-balanced and hence measured within a practical range. Lever systems not only perform this force-reducing action, they also serve to focus the load force at a single point, for convenient measurement. They align the force vertically in one direction so that measurement accuracy will not be affected by unrelated side forces. There are five basic methods of gravimetric weight measurements. That is, there are five basic types of opposing forces. • The first is the standard weight counterbalance. It uses a known weight to counterbalance the load directly or through a lever system.

In 1994 Western Mine Engineering, Inc., (WME), which is now InfoMine USA, Inc., set out to build a suite of stand-alone software programs that would provide their clients the means to estimate the costs of developing and operating mineral exploitation projects. After the first program (Sherpa for Surface Mines) was completed and launched, the developer (me) left WME to form Aventurine Engineering, Inc., in order to complete the series of applications. In the years since, four programs have either been developed or upgraded and enhanced. Applications were produced that estimate the costs of underground mining, placer mining, and project site reclamation. In addition, an application specifically designed to evaluate the economics of these projects, which was based upon a program previously developed for WME by Bill Willoughby of Willoughby & Associates, was redesigned and the code updated to a MicroSoft compatible platform. All these programs follow an engineering-based approach to cost estimating. Instead of relying on rules-of-thumb and statistical averages, they calculate all of the engineering and operational parameters needed to estimate costs. The premise is that the uncertainty associated with cost estimates should lie with the data available for the resource, not the approaches used to design and estimate the associated design parameters. In other words, it is acceptable that items such as the resource grades, deposit dimensions, ore and wall rock characteristics, and mill recovery rates carry with them some uncertainty, but parameters such as loader bucket capacities, truck speeds, pump horsepowers, hoist velocities, and grinding mill diameters can be calculated (although uncertain data might be used in those calculations). No additional uncertainties should be introduced because the cost-estimating procedure relied upon statistical manipulation or anecdotal inaccuracies. To that end, the programs rely upon calculation-based approaches to selecting and sizing machinery, assigning the required workforce, and determining the extent of the consumables needed to recover mineralized material at a rate defined by the client. And while calculation-based software is not unusual, more modern approaches work toward the development, accumulation, and manipulation of data. INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PROJECT GOALS In 2016 we had five separate programs completely disconnected from one another. Each was written in VisualBasic, a language that was falling from favor. In essence, the status in 2016 was a series of stand-alone programs (Figure 1) in which results from one needed to be manually entered as input into another.

The post-apartheid South African government has instituted a new minerals policy. As part of the new policy, minerals rights are now held by the national government, not as private property. In addition, the national government desires to see a greater participation of all South Africans in the corporate mining arena. At the same time, the national government has adopted a policy of a strong monetary unit compared to the U.S. Dollar. The combination of these tow policies has led to changes within the platinum mining industry.

INTRODUCTION The principal OSHA standards dealing with tunneling activities are found in 29 CFR Part 1926. A reference for the applicable subparts which apply to tunneling is included as Appendix A. In addition, some standards from 29 CFR Part 1910 have been identified as applicable to construction and are included in the recent printing of an interim vertical standard for construction (1910/1926 Project). The remainder of this presentation will be focused on past OSHA activities to revise Subpart S of 1926, the principal subpart dealing with tunnel construction.

Hanging Lake Joint Venture recently excavated two conventional 12.8 m (42 foot) diameter highway tunnels in the difficult ground conditions of Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. This paper outlines the type and success of the various Controlled Blasting Techniques that were used to minimize overbreak in the portal and tunnel excavations. The different Smoothwall and Cushion Charge loads used in the different ground types are described in detail. Delay Timing and Drilling Pattern variations are also discussed.

Graphite usage in the United States during 1994 was fairly strong. The hearty showing of the domestic economy, along with sound performances from the major industries that use graphite, helped make 1994 a solid year for the graphite industry. Supply Virtually all natural graphite is imported into the United States, as there is no domestic production. The primary producers are Brazil, Canada, China, Madagascar, Mexico, Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Mozambique is a new producer. It is now supplying a high-carbon, large-crystallite flake in large quantities. Sri Lanka continues to experience problems with one of its two mines, closing operations in December 1994. The synthetic graphite used domestically was produced primarily in the United States as a byproduct of electrode production. Synthetic graphite was also imported from Switzerland for specialized applications. The purified graphites/carbons, such as Desulco and ThermoPURE materials, were also produced domestically. There was a sufficient supply of all types of graphite to meet domestic demand.

Lognormal grade distributions are definitely the rule rather than the, exception in many types of deposits, including precious metals, uranium, and many others. The "normal theory" geostatistical techniques do not work well in these situations because the occasional high grade values, perhaps several orders of magnitude larger than the median, can overwhelm the rest of the data, resulting in variograms and Kriged estimates which are unrealistic or even ridiculous. Robust techniques for variogram modeling have been proposed, and truncation of high sample values can produce more reasonable Kriged estimates, but the technique of working with log transformed data appears to be the best method of handling lognormal data. This paper will discuss primarily the two parameter lognormal case, with some discussion of the three parameter lognormal, but no discussion of other methods of transforming data, such as disjunctive Kriging.

Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

When tunnel boring machines were first developed, the J. F. Shea Company elected not to use them until some of the bugs were worked out. When we did take the plunge, we learned a great many lessons in tunneling; amongst others, that tunneling with a TBM is more an art than a science. One of the most important factors that contributes to a successful TBM tunnel is the geology. A machine can be designed to handle almost any type of ground; however, if the ground is not uniform, compromises in design must be made to enable the machine to handle the various ground conditions. Even when the geologic formations are well defined, it is still impossible to predict how the formations will react when it is penetrated by a tunnel. This is where the design and performance of a tunnel boring machine runs into trouble. When the reactions are adverse, the contractor is left with three alternatives; park or pull the machine and drive conventional, fight through the formation with no changes, or modify the machine. We have made all three of these choices. The first, on the Tonner Tunnel in Southern California, we encountered an extremely tough sandstone where progress was measured in inches per day. Ultimately, we pulled the machine and drove conventional tunnel. The second, on the Vat Tunnel in Central Utah, another element was added to the geology - water, which we encountered in excess of 1,000 gpm at the heading. It was impossible to adapt the machine to handle this much water, so we have been carrying out a program of grouting ahead of the machine and then driving tunnel with the tunnel boring machine.
