A 16.5-kt/day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in Northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. A gravity block caving method has been selected for mining the ore. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. The shafts are being sunk under contract and the conveyor decline is being driven by Molycorp. The driving of the decline began in February, 1979 with a 10-man mining class. By the first of May, enough men had been trained to begin a continuous operation and by March 1, 1980 the face had reached the 1500 m mark. The heading is being driven with trackless rubber-tired equipment using a three-boom drill jumbo, 2.7 m3 LHD units and 7.3 m3 trucks. Ground support has been by rock bolts and wire mesh, followed by Fibercrete. A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity - 9 Gg of molybdenum per year - to be reached in 1984.

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

The study of minero-petrographical characteristics and the subsequent textural and structural characterization of an ore mineral represents the first step of each industrial processing whose aim is the beneficiation of each valuable mineral phase present inside the ore. Analytical, mineralogical and petrographical, chemical and multispectral image analyses based investigations, applied to eclogitic ore samples deriving form "in situ" sampling campaigns, were applied. These procedures enabled to point out some textural and structural aspects characteristics of ore litotypes belonging to eclogitic-amphibolitic dikes. Such dikes are characterized by a paragenesis constituted mainly by siliceous gangue and accessory "useful titanium minerals" as rutile [TiO2], "pseudolilmenite", ilmenite [FeTiO3] and sphene [CaTiSiO5]. In the beneficiation process applied to ore s is of preliminary importance to establish a strategy in order to obtain a recovery of high quality "mono-minerals concentrates" as rutile, "pseudolimenite", ilmenite and phene. To reach this goal is thus necessary to develop a preliminary study of the textural, structural, petrochemical and minerochemical characteristics of the samples. Different ore samples (eclogitic rocks), resulting from sampling campaigns carried out in the Piampaludo area (Sassello district: Savona, Northern Italy), are examined.

Beneath some of New York?s most iconic buildings ? The Met Life Building, the Helmsley Building, the Waldorf Astoria ? crews are busily at work on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s long-awaited East Side Access (ESA) project. In fact, it is 14 floors beneath the famed Grand Central Station where one of the centerpieces of the project, the new Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station terminal, is being blasted and carved into shape. When completed in 2016, the $7.3-billion ESA project will increase LIRR?s capacity into Manhattan and significantly relieve congestion at Penn Station. Currently, 37 LIRR trains per rush hour roll into the crowded Penn Station where many riders must then transfer to subway trains to complete their commute. When completed, the ESA tunnels will bring an estimated 160,000 riders directly to Grand Central Station, saving those riders 30 to 40 minutes. Studies have found that more people work within walking distance of Grand Central than Penn Station. ?The benefits of the project are tremendous,? MTA Capital Construction President Michael Horodniceanu told more than 340 industry professionals attending the UCA of SME?s George A. Fox Conference in New York on Jan. 26. ?The ESA is the first expansion of the LIRR in 100 years. It will increase the East River tunnel capacity by 50 percent and will help support job growth around Grand Central.?

The potential for the wide-spread commercialization of superconductivity, the disappearance of all resistance to a direct current (D.C.) electric flow, began in 1986-87 with the development by Bednorz and Muller at IBM's Zurich Laboratory of an yttrium -barium -copper oxide conductor which attained zero resistance at 90t:. Although the status of superconductivity is still pre-bench scale, it is useful to forecast its probable effects on the copper industry. I t should not be forgotten that at their inception, the impacts of transistors, semi-conductors, thin films and fiber optics on the electric/electronics sector of this industry, were largely underestimated. Superconductors are not metals, but a class of ceramics. They represent an efficiency increase of one or more orders of magnitude. If their development is to be a boon to the copper industry, rather than a reduction of metal demand through miniaturization or material substitution, vastly expanded copper containing electrical uses must be in prospect. In this paper the projected uses of high temperature superconductivity are examined, followed by the remaining problems to be overcome. Assuming success, a time horizon for maturation is estimated. The penalties for the non-recognition of new markets and material substitution are shown on the basis of past forecasts. Finally, the application of successful superconductivity to the copper industry over the forecast period is estimated.

The major goal of this study is to decrease iron content in wet-process phosphoric acid. Reducing the amount of post-precipitated sludge in the acid is another important objective in this investigation. In order to achieve these goals, research efforts have focused on bench scale testing of an iron-chelating reagent to remove iron from phosphoric acid produced from South Florida high-iron and -magnesium phosphate concentrate, and plant testing using freshly produced concentrated acids for reducing the post- precipitated sludge. The data obtained in the above studies suggest that the addition point of the precipitating reagent is very important, as the precipitated iron compound has higher solubility at higher P2O5 concentrations. Up to 60% Fe2O3 removal efficiency is achieved depending on the amount of the reagent, concentration of acid used, and operating conditions. The addition of precipitating reagents to freshly concentrated phosphoric acid leads to a decrease of up to 84% in sludge volume percentage depending on acid type and clarification conditions. Decreasing the volume percentage of the sludge facilitates acid handling as well as decreases the adherent water- soluble P205 leading to lower total P2O losses.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. "This paper outlines a comprehensive, cost-effective testing program for the acid-ferric sulfate heap leaching of oxide, supergene and primary copper ores. It is based on extensive experience in copper heap leaching and uses the many technological advances in the field developed over the past several decades. The approach described requires firstly a detailed resource evaluation, then a hydrodynamic characterization of representative samples and, finally, a focused metallurgical testing program. The principles communicated here can be applied to other acid leachable minerals. The program varies considerably from conventional testing in its disciplined, orderly, step-by-step approach, its application of hydrological and chemical principles to leaching, and its reliance on fewer, more tightly controlled column tests. The purpose of the test program is to optimize the financial, time and other resources devoted to the program, while minimizing the financial risks to the development company or companies and the project funding providers. IntroductionThe major goal of any process development testing program should be the successful implementation of the project. With respect to heap leaching, the metallurgical testing program plays a critical role in the larger objective, as described in Scheffel (2013, 2014). McNulty’s series of papers (1998, 2004, 2014) confirm that the success of any project is directly proportional to the extent and quality of the testing program on which the process is designed.Therefore, a key development objective is to conduct a well-focused metallurgical test program. While the primary focus of this paper is copper, the acid leaching of any substance would benefit from a similar approach.This paper addresses primarily the sulfate system, which is compatible with the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. Nicol et al. (2011) described the advantages of the chloride leaching of copper sulfide minerals. United States patents Nos. US 2009/0173188 A1, US 8,597,933 B2 and US2015/0232963 A1, assigned to BHP Chile Inc. and BHP Billiton S.A. Ltd, describe methods for both the oxidative and nonoxidative leaching of primary and secondary copper sulfides. Reyes (2013) and Ipinza and Flaquer (2014) described commercial applications of chloride-based heap leaching. The testing disciplines discussed in this paper will also apply to the development of an acidic chloride leaching system."

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. Certain types of jigs remove fine sand.Reciprocating tables; recover fine iron particles from sand discarded by above processes.Magnetic separation; applicable to the commercial separation of the magnetic oxide of iron from gangue material. From a scientific standpoint it is possible to separate certain hematites and limonites from their gangue:(g) Miscellaneous processes; comprise dry concentration, electro-static separation and other processes."

The research presented here was initiated to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The problem of increasing the recovery rate of copper from these dumps is or great importance considering there are by conservative estimate in excess of fifteen billion pounds of copper located in dumps in the western United States. At this time, there is an increased interest in recovering copper from these dumps on a large scale. Large tonnages of low-grade material are being placed on the waste dumps of most copper mining operations in the western United States each day. The size of these dumps ranges from 5.5 million tons at Mineral Park, Arizona, to 4 billion tons at Kennecott's Utah operation (1). Leach solutions are recycled and contain ferrous and ferric sulfates. Large quantities of dissolved aluminum, magnesium and calcium salts may also be present. To this solution make up water is added to maintain the solution inventory and sulfuric acid is added for pH adjustment. Iron is introduced into the leach solution by the dissolution of the iron-containing sulfide and oxidized minerals present in the ore deposit. In addition to the iron from dump leaching, iron is also introduced during the precipitation process when the pregnant solution is passed over metallic scrap iron if cementation is used to reduce the copper in solution.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100,000 Mtpd throughput rates. Nowadays and moving forward virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250,000 Mtpd now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 cells and nowadays to the 660 m3 machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed herein. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

"History - How did you get into mining and involved with SME?Unlike many past presidents, I do not come from a mining lineage. I liked math in high school and believed I wanted to be an engineer. I told my math teacher that, and he laughed in my face. I believe that humiliation is what carried me through engineering school. At the time my ability to go to college relied on how inexpensive I could make it. My brother told me that there were a lot of scholarships in mining engineering, and I should apply to mining schools. As usual, he was right and I was off to the University of Idaho to study. My first summer break I got a job with Hecla at a mine in Arizona. I was a laborer on a shotcrete crew. I knew after the first summer that I loved underground mining, and I never considered changing disciplines. Looking back, I was working in miserable conditions (hot, humid), on a miserable job (shotcrete), where I got injured, and two summer student roommates died in a car accident on the commute home after work. I had every reason to hate the industry, as I had seen virtually everything bad about what we do. But I didn’t, I loved it. I said I was good at math, I never said I was smart.I joined SME in college because I was told to by the head of the mining school, Dr. Jack Hoskins. You did what Jack told you to do. I got involved because I went to an annual meeting and the papers in the underground sessions were terrible. I refer to bad papers as the “Tensile strength on cable bolts in sub-arctic regions on Tuesday” papers. Real snoring fodder. I don’t remember who I was complaining to, but they told me to quit my grumbling and fix it. So I chaired a session, and tried to get only good quality papers, something that has been my mantra for years with the Mining & Exploration Division. I also volunteered to help the local sections too. Then one day I woke up as president.What is your opinion of the health of the mining industry?The mining industry is in bad shape. Coal is under attack and will likely never recover to its former greatness. Our President has banned new coal leases, and the state of California is forcing people it does business with to divest their interests in coal companies. And that all happened in just in a few short weeks this January. Usually in America you get a trial before you are given a death sentence, but not with coal."

INTRODUCTION Spokane Mining Research Center (BuMines) is researching sealants for underground coal mines to: 1. Reduce sloughing of shale roofs. 2. Reduce sloughing of coal ribs. 3. Seal block stoppings against air losses. 4. Construct stoppings by spraying over jute cloth or metal lath. 5. Render incombustible in-place polyurethane foam. Originally the work was directed towards reducing sloughing of shale roofs. Many underground coal mines have shale directly over the coal which weathers severely after exposure to the mine atmosphere. Lab investigations(l, 2, 3, 4) have shown that many shales separate into layers when immersed in water or stored in a high relative humidity environment. Upon drying or after removal from high humidity, the shales continue to separate. Underground coal mines become wet in the warmer months from condensation of the ventilating air. Conversely, the mines become dry in the cooler months from evaporation. The mines experience severe shale break-up during the summer and much less break-up during the winter. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show weathered shale roofs. in underground coal mines. Fig. 4 shows fallen shale on the entry floor. Sealing the shale reduces this sloughing problem.

Simulation models have been widely used to analyze the operations and characteristics of a variety of systems. Such models mimmick a projected reality by analyzing the interaction of the events, transactions, and facilities which combine to make up the system. The models are structured as a computer representation of the system components and their logical, precedence and timing relationships. The operation of the system is then simulated over some finite time interval to gather analytical and staistical data. This paper presents a method whereby bulk handling systems, either actual or proposed, may be analyzed by means of simulation models to project the enconomic consequences which may be expected from the system over some future time interval. An example is given to illustrate the construction of bulk handling simulation models, the derivation of performance data, and the analysis of the information with an eye to effective decision making.

Recent advances in personal computer technology allow movies of various types to be made and displayed on PC and Macintosh computers. An interesting application of this movie technology is animation of computerized geological models. These movies, which can be most easily constructed along rows, columns, and benches of block models, allow an ore body to be more easily and quickly visualized than the traditional method of flipping back and forth through various sections.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

A review and comparison is made of the circuitry utilized for dc crane control systems. Anti-parallel three phase full wave thyristor bridges for dc motor reversing and speed control are compared with a single three phase full wave thyristor bridge for speed control and either contactor or static switching for reversing control to obtain complete four quadrant operation for crane material handling. In recent years the Harnischfeger Corporation has developed a solid state adjustable voltage control system to control the speed and direction of dc motors for crane applications and handling materia1.1 Shunt wound dc motors are utilized and speed is controlled in the motor base speed operating region at constant torque by a thyristor, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), adjust- able armature voltage supply. The three phase thyristor bridge is the power controlling element of the dc adjustable voltage control. ELECTROTORQUE is the Harnischfeger Corporation registered trade name for this type of drive system. By controlling the gating signals or firing pulses to the thyristor bridge SCR's the dc output voltage can be varied over a wide range. This range is limited only by the magnitude of the ac applied voltage. To obtain operation of the motor in both directions two thristor bridges are connected in an anti-parallel arrangement. A typical schematic for two anti-parallel connected three phase SCR bridges is shown in Figure 1.

Nuclear radiation systems for gauging solids content in process slurries and level in crushers has demonstrated acceptance in ore processing. The use of nuclear radiation for moisture analysis of bulk materials is presently receiving acceptance in beneficiating and agglomerating processes. On the horizon is the use of nuclear activation methods for continuous, qualatative and quantitative analysis of concentrate. The common characteristics of these uses of radiation is the non-contacting nature of the measurement. Unquestionably, this is the dominant reason for acceptance of nuclear methods in level and slurry-gauging. Moisture activation analysis of a product using nuclear methods retain this advantage. However, and: more importantly, they offer new solutions to old problems. The nuclear method in addition to being non-contacting, is non-destructive and provides a continuous measurement of the process variable. The system responds: to the fundamental makeup of matter, mass and elemental composition, not to secondary properties such as temperature, resistivity, or dielectric constant. Measurement is a volume rather than a surface phenomenon, thus the results can provide a truer pricture of the measured variable.
