Feldspar is the earth's most abundant mineral group. The feldspars are aluminum silicate minerals belonging to the tectosilicate class. Feldspars are the most widespread of any mineral group and are estimated to constitute 60% of the earth's crust. They make up a large percentage of the exposed rocks as well as soils, clays, and other unconsolidated sediments. Feldspars are widely used in the glass and ceramic industry and are principal components in rock classification schemes. Feldspar minerals and their production are important contributors to the domestic and world economies and standard of living. In 1990, the United States produced 630 kt of feldspar minerals, and world production was estimated to be more than 5 Mt. Feldspar mineral production in the United States has a long and interesting history (Feitler, 1967, Rogers Jr. et al., 1983). The first commercial production in the United States occurred in about 1825 and came from pegmatite bodies located in Connecticut, where feldspar was mined, hand sorted, and shipped to England. Feldspar production grew during the 19th and 20th centuries with important developments in production location, integrated mine and processing facilities, and the development of the flotation process for feldspar by the US Bureau of Mines and the feldspar industry. The first commercial feldspar flotation plant began operations-in Kona, NC, in 1946, some six years after this process had been developed. In 1990, the domestic feldspar industry consisted of 12 operating companies with mines and processing plants located throughout the United States (see Table 1). During the last 25 years, the domestic feldspar industry has been dynamic, marked by new plant construction and capacity expansion at older plants. The industry has also seen plant closures, changes in ownership of existing operations, the consolidation of the Canadian nepheline syenite industry, and the increase of imported feldspar products. The industry has been affected by contractions in its major end-use markets brought about by economic cycles, product substitution, and environmental effects, such as recycling, land-use controversy, and air and water pollution. Despite problems, the industry remains mature and highly competitive. GEOLOGY Mineralogy The common feldspar group of minerals form a single crystalline phase or solid solution series of minerals. Fig. 1 is a ternary phase diagram that shows the feldspar mineralogy-KAlSi,O8, NaAlSi3O8, and CaAl2Si2O8. The end-member compositions are also referred to as potassium, sodium, and calcium feldspar. The feldspars whose chemistry ranges between the potassium and sodium end-members are known as alkali feldspars, while those between the sodium and calcium end-members are plagioclase feldspars. These feldspar groups can be further subdivided based on structural and compositional features within the alkali or plagioclase feldspar series. The distinction between and the proportion of members of the two feldspar groups are important to the classification of igneous rocks (Deer et al., 1966). Perthites are the exsolution product of an initially homogeneous potassium-sodium feldspar solid solution which forms (in an environment of decreasing temperature) a heterogeneous intergrowth of sodium-rich feldspar lamellae in a host crystal of potassium feldspar. Antiperthites are exsolution products in which the host mineral is sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar and the intergrowths are potassium-rich feldspar.

As the 2011 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2011 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 330. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2011 Transactions is the second Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely in electronic format. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will better serve the mining community. Based on the feedback from the 2010 Transactions in e-book format, I believe that the transition to the all-digital format was the proper decision. The 2011 Transactions contain some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a 10-year profile of roof and rib fall trends from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a new cross-disciplinary application of the tools of epidemiology to assess and mitigate risk in coal mines . This 2011 Transactions comprise of a total of 82 technical papers (626 pages including index), including all 19 papers published in 2011 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 63) and all 32 papers published in 2011 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 28). Additionally, this volume contains 31 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 82 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2011 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. From a gathering storm of climate change based legislation that could potentially overwhelm the mining industry, to the nuts and bolts of mineral processing and just about everything in between, about 100 mining and mineral processing professionals heard it at all at the 60th annual Colorado MPD Meeting April 22-24 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. With a sweeping agenda under the banner ?What in the world is new in mining and metallurgy? attendees were treated to four sessions and 21 presentations that covered the range of mining industry issues. Bill Reid, president, chief executive officer and director of Gold Resources Corp., spoke about his company?s El Aquila gold project in Mexico. With five projects in Mexico, Gold Resources Corps. is aiming to become a low-cost gold and silver producer. Its flagship property, the El Aguila gold project, is a high-grade gold and silver property with significant base metal credits of copper, lead and zinc. Production of the El Aguila project was targeted for mid-2009. Reid said that three high-grade deposits have been discovered at the El Aguila project. They include the high-grade ?manto? style El Aguila openpit deposit, the El Aire high-grade polyme-tallic vein system, which is underground, and the underground La Arista high-grade polymetallic vein system. The project is located 120 km (75 miles) south-east of the capital city of Oaxaca, Mexico. Reid said the property has yielded several exceptional gold and silver surface samples, including a 36-g/t (1.1 oz/st) gold sample and a 3,100-g/t (90 oz/st) silver sample. The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple-seam surface coal mine located in the northwest comer of New Mexico. The property is situated entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation. It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long-term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners power plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners powerplant consumes 7.2 Mt to 7.7 Mt/a (8 million to 8.5 million stpy) of coal. The Navajo Mine has estimated reserves totaling 1 Gt (1. I billion st) of strip minable coal. Only about one-third of that total is presently committed to the generating station. As development continued over the years, mining operations advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utility's demand for coal. To optimize the committed reserve and provide competitively priced coal to the customer, the Navajo Mine began developing a new pit in June 1986. The Dixon Pit boxcut development was completed in April 1987. About 6 hm3 (7.9 million cu yd) were stripped, uncovering 929 kt (1 million st) of coal. Strip ratio was 7.74:1 including 36.8% rehandle of prime yardage. This case study of the fourth production cut highlights a variety of dragline stripping techniques including highwall bench (overburden) side cast, intermediate highwall bench (parting-interburden) side cast and spoilside bench (partings-interburden) stripping methods. The Dixon Pit offers considerable challenges in the surface recovery of up to seven seams of coal within the 1432 m (4700 ft) of total pit length.

INTRODUCTION To be effective and useful, monitoring of tunnel construction must be carefully planned throughout all steps. A vital and frequently overlooked step is a clear definition of the specific purposes of the instrumentation. Most tunnel construction monitoring has in the past been of benefit to research, the advancement of tunneling practice, wittingly or not. The development of monitoring instrumentation for the benefit of the project from which the data are recovered has very significant potential for risk and cost reduction of soft ground tunneling. A systematic approach to tunnel construction monitoring, from conception to full implementation, includes at least the following nine tasks or steps: Definition of benefits and purposes; design and project specification to draw full benefits; selection of monitoring parameters; selection of instruments and writing of specifications for procurement and installation; procurement and installation; reading and maintenance; data storage and retrieval; interpretation; implementation. Some of these steps are fairly easy and resolved through the use of established theories and technologies. The difficult ones are those that require the bending of minds, those that involve changes in the ways engineers design soft ground tunnels, the way owners pay for tunnels, and the construction is managed, inspected and controlled. Anaconda has been active In the Bingham mining district near Tooele, Utah since 1914 when the company acquired International Smelting & Refining Co. Over the years both custom ores and complex Pb-Zn-Cu ores from the district were milled and smelted at International. In 1948 Anaconda acquired the property that covers the present Carr Fork ore body. Since that time active exploration took place in the 50's followed by detailed geological evaluation in the 60's. Convinced that high grade Cu deposits would be found at depth, a deep drilling program commenced in the late 60?s, with intersection of the ore zone in 1969. Following extensive deep drilling in the early 70?s, a feasibility study was conducted in 73-74 with board approval given Sept. 6, 1974. The 9,000 t/d mine-mill complex was budgeted at $217 MM over a 5 year schedule with start-up in Sept., 1979. The following discussion includes the concentrator and surface facility portion of the budget or approximately $60 MM of the scope. Special emphasis will be made on equipment selection and layout.

A proactive design and construct approach was used to remediate the Warm Springs Ponds Complex near Anaconda, Montana under "Superfund". The pond complex is used for treatment/settlement of heavy metals and is a repository for 19,000,000 cubic yards of tailings, precipitates and associated sediments. Remediation has resulted in treatment/settling capacity for flows up to the 100-year flood (3,300 cfs); expansion from 5 to 11 ponds in series requiring 12.5 miles of new or improved embankments with associated hydraulic structures; flood protection for the 0.5 Probable Maximum -Flood (PMF) (70,000 cfs); and closure of exposed tailings along with aquatic and terrestrial habitat enhancement.

The lining of the tunnel and shafts for a new section of New York City's- water system required extensive components to produce, deliver and place a continuous tunnel linning. The project placed approximately 153,000 CM (200,000 cy) of concrete for 5,340 M (17,520) of drill and blast 7.3 M (24 ft.) ID tunnel, located at depths of 152 M (500 ft.) to 213 M (700 ft.) . This section of tunnel will be connected to the surface water distribution system via four shafts of varying diameters ranging from 5.8 M (19 ft.) ID to 1.5 M (5 ft.) ID . All work was done beneath the streets of Manhattan under the rigid constraints of the City of New York and the Bureau of Water Supply regulations.

Because conventional (physical) methods of ore dressing are not suitable for reducing the phosphorus contents of high-phosphorous manganese ores from Andhra Pradesh (AP) and the adjoining area in southern Orissa, India, the adoption of chemical methods becomes imperative. An attempt was therefore made to reduce the phosphorus content of partially beneficiated manganese ores from AP by roasting with sodium carbonate and then leaching with hot water. However, due to the higher phosphorus contents of the manganese ores from Nishikhal mines in southern Orissa, and because of their apparent resistance to dephosphorization by roasting with Na2CO3 alone, a mixture of Na2CO3 and NaCl was found to be necessary to reduce the phosphorus content to below 0.15%. Free-energy calculations at 700°C and above indicated that Na2CO3 (or Na2O as the active component) is a more active reagent than NaCl. Various process parameters, such as the temperature and time of roasting, the amount of sodium carbonate and the temperature and time of leaching, were studied to arrive at the optimum conditions for dephosphorization.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty-acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption (over silica surfaces) and high reactivity of fatty-acid collectors toward apatite under slightly acidic conditions (pH 5 - 6.5). The process was successful in upgrading various Florida and North Carolina phosphate samples containing 7.7% to 15.3% P205 and 62.3% to 77.2% siliceous gangue (Insol). The resulting concentrates assayed 28.1 % to 33.1 % P205 and 4.1 % to 9.9% Insol, with high P205 recoveries of 81.8% to 92.2%. Depending on the degree of surface contamination of the silica particles in the flotation feed, one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to achieve higher-grade phosphate concentrates.

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

"Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

In the spring of 1959 while visiting the offices of the US Geological Survey (USGS) in the Denver Federal Center, I had a chance encounter with Paul Theobold, a former but, at that time, casual associate. Paul mentioned to me the results of his work on stream sediment geochemistry (Theobold and Thompson, 1959). Using panned concentrates, Theobold and Thompson had discovered a tungsten anomaly in Clear Creek and followed it upstream to its source on Woods Creek, a small tributary to the West Fork of Clear Creek. The specific source was a debris cone about 0.8 km (0.5 mile) upstream from the mine yard at the Urad molybdenite deposit. Because of the genetic and zonal association of tungsten and molybdenum at Climax, I found this very interesting. Accordingly, I related this information to Robert Henderson, general manager of western operations for Climax, and asked his permission to do some follow-up work. He, in turn, telephoned Frank Coolbaugh, the president of Amax, telling him of my interest and saying that, "Climax would take care of it." On my first visit to Urad, my companions (Dave Jonson, Bruce MacKenzie, and Dick Baker) and I were confronted by a "Cousin Jack" caretaker who made up for his diminutive stature by a "pistolover" that hung down almost to his knee and by a watchdog that was one-half wolf and one-half mean sled dog. We retreated discretely to Clear Creek and then climbed up the "back" side of Red Mountain by separate routes, across the ridge crest, and part of the way down the "front" side, sampling as we went. Although much of the ground was covered with snow, we found lots of puzzling but friendly looking rocks and the geochemical results were interesting. A geologic map of central Colorado showing the location of the Urad-Henderson and Climax deposits is shown in Fig. I.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines experimental test program which evaluated the effectiveness of using high explosives to enhance orebody permeability. To determine the effect of stress on the fracture network generated by blasting, fifteen single-hole laboratory tests in granite blocks up to .067 m3 (2.4 ft3) in size were blasted using .12 to .20m (4.8 to 8.0 in) of 1.6xl0-3-, 3.2xl0-3-, or 6.5xl0-3-kg (25-, 50-, or 100-grain) detonating cord. In situ stresses were simulated using polyaxial load cells to apply uniform stresses of 1.72xl06 to 1.76xl07 Pa (250 to 2550 psi). All of the blocks were sawed to expose the blast-induced fracture patterns for analysis.

Contrary to active subsidence, which occurs concurrently with mining operations, or is completed within a few days following coal extraction, delayed subsidence may take many years to appear at the surface after coal mines are abandoned. There are two principal morphological types of delayed subsidence: troughs, which are shallow depressions, and sinks, which are steep-sided crown pits. Both types are damaging to surface structures, and a variety of methods have been introduced to deal with the problem, ranging from subsidence insurance to site restitution. In planning insurance or restitution measures, a predictive model is of value in estimating the magnitude of the problem and the size of long-term budgetary commitments. Only one model is known, which was developed for the Bureau of Mines by GAI Consultants of Monroeville (l,2,3). The GAI model is presented in qualitative terms. This report develops a formal basis for the model and tests a numerical implementation on one of the best-described study areas, Allleqheny County in Pennsylvania.

An attempt was made to beneficiate low-grade, high-phosphorus manganese ores of the Garividi-Garbham region of Andhra Pradesh, India, by using wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The distribution behavior of both mass and chemical constituents in different size fractions of a typical highly weathered ore sample was studied to obtain information about the liberation characteristics of various chemical constituents. Magnetic separation indicated that in the +208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the magnetic fractions. However, in the -208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the nonmagnetic fraction because of a lower recovery of the magnetic fraction. Variations in field intensity between 1.3 and 1.75 T had little effect on the recovery and the grade of concentrate. The results also demonstrated that phosphorus was associated with all three major constituent phases, namely, oxides of Mn and Fe and aluminosilicate gangue minerals.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."
