A novel system for the depression of pyrite and the ash-forming minerals has been developed. A metal ion, including but not restricted to Fe+2, is added to form a hydroxide coating on the pyrite or ash-forming mineral. A polymeric depressant is then added to attach to this re-surfaced mineral. Nearly 200 flotation tests with a 11 different coals indicate the effectiveness of this system. Many of the important process variables such as the coal source, frother-collector system, grind size and procedure, pH, metal ion, and depressant type and concentration have been studied.

Confined explosions are a major risk in underground coal mine operations. Depending on confinement, ignition location and obstacles in the flame path, methane explosions can transition to detonations. This research focuses on explosion experiments in a reactor with diameter of 71 cm and length of 30.5 m, along with developing the corresponding computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model that captures the observed flame behavior. The results show that the 2D and 3D CFD models are able predict the experimental flame front propagation velocity, but the 3D model shows more explicit conformity than the 2D model.

INTRODUCTION There are now over twenty years since the radiological characteristics of the brazilian regions of Araxá, Tapira and Barreiros, three locations adjacent to each other, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, started being surveyed by investigators from the Instituto de Biofísica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IB/UFRJ), Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), and New York University (NYU) (Roser and Cullen, 1958; Cullen et al, 1980). The importance of the Araxá apatite – Ca5,(P04)3(OH, F, Cl) - and pyrochlore - NaCaNB206F - for the production of large quantities of fertilizers and niobium was early recognized (Roser and Cullen, 1958). Interesting data have been gathered and published throughout the years on the contents of naturally occurring radionuclides in geologic materials, soils, grass, foods and waters of the Araxá region (Eisenbud, et al., 1964; Penna Franca, et al., 1965a, b; Roser et al., 1966; Penna Franca et al., 1970; Cullen, 1977; Penna Franca, 1977; Cullen and Paschoa, 1978; and Cullen et al., 1980). The radioactivity of the Araxá region is associated with mineral deposits of niobium rich pyrochlore and phosphate rich apatite. There are in this region mineral ores with 3 to 5% pyrochlore with 2 to 2.5% Th as Th02 and 50 to 150 ppm U308 in the matrix, while the apatite deposits contain up to 150 ppm U308 and a thorium concentration similar to that of the pyrochlore deposits (Paschoa and Palacios, 1981). As an indication of the high thorium content of the Araxá soils the 228Ra and 224Ra activity concentrations were reported to range from 10.6±0.2 to 62.4±0.7 pCi228Ra/g soil in 7 samples and 2.1±0.1 to 104±1 pCi224Ra/g soil in 19 samples (Cullen, et al., 1966). The uptake of radium isotopes by edible roots vegatables and fruits growing in the soils of the Araxá region can be illustrated by the data listed in Table I. The biological availability of natural radium isotopes in some segments of the Araxá soil allows a large variation in the 228Ra, 224Ra and 226Ra concentrations in vegetables and edible roots, as can be seen in Table I. This fact makes quite difficult a quantitative local assessment of the radiological implications of mining the Araxá mineral deposits of pyrochlore and apatite for production of niobium and phosphate fertilizers, respectively; since one cannot easily separate the naturally occurring from the technogically enhanced radionuclide contents of foods. The position of the city of Araxá inside the contour of the state of Minas Gerais appears in the upper part of Figure 1, which shows the outlined map of Brazil with the positions of the cities Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro also indicated. The lower part of Figure 1 is a representation of the Araxá region in an expanded scale, which indicates the locations of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits in relation to the city of Araxá, as well as the nearby hydrographic basins. The distance between the city of Araxá and the pyrochlore deposit is about 8 km, and between the pyrochlore and apatite deposits is 4 km. This paper deals tentatively with the radiological implications of the industrial operations taking place in the Araxá region for the exploration of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits. However, one must bear in mind, firstly, that the radiological implications of these industrial activities are by far too complex to be covered adequately by the limited amount of data to be presented in this paper, and secondly, that such implications cannot be considered of local character only. INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS The commercial exploration of the Araxá deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started only few years ago, motivated by the increasing demand of niobium and phosphate fertilizers in Brazil and the world. As a consequence of the industrial operations in Araxá, a redistribution of the uranium, thorium, and radium originally present in the local deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started occurring in the seventies, with possible radiological implications for the Araxá region and its immediate surroundings, not to mention the destinations of the end products of such industrial operations. A literature review on the radioactivity associated with the extration industries of selected minerals was made by the USEPA (Bliss, 1978). The low level radioactive wastes of the industries for copper ore mining and rare metals processing have been object of particular attention (Fitzgerald, Jr., 1976; Eng, et al., 1979), but the short and long term implications of the radioactivity associated with the niobium industry were also subjects of concern (Knight and Makepeace, 1978). Recently, high 232Th and 226Ra concentrations in samples from the tin mining industry in West Malaysia were reported (Hu et al., 1981). The increasing public interest in a useful framework for an assessment and classification of mineral resources (1) is documented by the recently published international classification scheme of the United Nations (1979) and the revision of the classification system of USBM/USGS (2) (1980). Moreover, various classification systems are currently discussed by the mining industry. In spite of major improvements in respect of the concepts, definitions, and taxonomy of ore classification, it has been recognized that the recent practice to classify mineral resources does not create truly reproductible results, i.e. an assessment to the various categories which is free from personal bias or corporate interests. Following are geostatistical methods proposed for a standardization and quantification of various terms in ore classification. After critical review of present practices, we will establish a precise link between the classical terms such as "measured", "indicated", and "inferred" reserves and the geostatistical concept of estimation errors. Moreover, we will demonstrate, how the basic criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery can be taken into account by geostatistics. A specific algorithm will be proposed to block out and to classify reserves according to the degree of geologic assurance. . We will also show computerized methods which perform complete classification procedures, and will also exemplify them with typical case studies.

Working with junior mining companies as a valuer, my experience with regulators is that simplicity works and the sales comparison method is the way to go. What I like about Mr. Ellis?s approach (as in his Table 7) is the integration of commodity prices with the timing of acquisitions and the implication of price changes in gold on the adjustment of individual project valuations. However, the sample gold-related appraisals in Ellis?s paper are pre-2008 transactions and readers should be made aware of the current market for such projects. Before moving on, to be noted is that the effective date of the Las Brisas appraisal (Ellis?s sample Appraisal 3) is Feb. 10, 2006; given that the subject value of Transaction 9, Choco 10 in Ellis?s Table 6 was listed as $353 million for a 95% interest in the con-cession, I am uncomfortable accepting that the acquisition was suddenly worth the adjusted value of $1,205 million (as given in Ellis?s Table 7). In some cases, illiquidity discounts can apply, and commodity-wise, in the one-month period between the acquisition in January 2006 and the adjustment to the Las Brisas conditions as of February 10, 2006, the indicated gold price change was only 41 cents/g ($12.60/oz); i.e., from $17.50/g to $17.91/g ($544.40/oz to $557/oz).

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

In a short section of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system approximately 222.5 m (730 ft) of 6.4 m (21 ft) diameter twin-tube tunnels separated by a 1.8 m (6 ft) narrow pillar were designed to pass under a major eight lane freeway and a metropolitan intersection with only 3.7 m (12 ft) to 5.8 m (19 ft) of loose fill and alluvium cover. The design considerations and the chemical grouting program used to stabilize the alluvial materials is discussed. Also included is a discussion of the novel shield used for tunnel excavation and the effects of the subsequent fire.

Corrosion has long been identified as a potential risk to the long-term ground support stability due to degradation of internal ground support elements such as rock bolts but also to surface support from mesh, straps, bolt plates, and ancillary support of utilities such as hangers. The emphasis is to understand the corrosion mechanisms on the primary ground support elements and any supplemental steel or arch sets. The water and chemical processes from oxidation(rust), stress corrosion cracking, and even the electrical charge created during these reactions contribute to the corrosion of the steel support elements. The main goals are to mitigate the effects of corrosion and to be able to predict those areas of high water or high sulphide for potential rehab maps. It is also essential to identify and classify the visible corrosion as part of damage mapping and provide bolt testing to those areas of suspected internal damage from corrosion. This is important to get an estimate of the support longevity or expected life before rehab to minimize the overall cost of the operation.

The literature defines rockbursts in slightly different ways based on their generation mechanisms, field phenomena, and degree of damage, but in a way that is almost consistent. Generally, a rockburst refers to seismic events that mainly happen in underground excavations, for purposes such as underground mining, road and railway tunnels, nuclear power, etc., and that are followed by the collapse and outburst of rocks. Long-term rockburst prediction can be abstracted as a classification problem mathematically, in which we can introduce deep learning to solve it. Further, using deep learning in rockburst prediction can overcome drawbacks such as subjectivity and inconsistency brought from previous traditional approaches. A rockburst data-set, was employed to evaluate the current method for predicting rockburst grade, and the good results of overall success rate were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed algorithms can speed up parameter optimization search, the proposed method is robust model and might hold a high potential to become a useful tool in rockburst prediction research.

BACKGROUND The development of public transportation in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area is, as in other cities, closely tied to the development of the area because of increases in population and commercial and industrial activity. Local transportation first appeared in the area in the 1870s when the population was fewer than 10,000 residents. Around 1910, after many consolidations of competitive interests, two large railway companies were formed: The Los Angeles Railway, which provided urban transportation in the Los Angeles City area, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which primarily provided suburban and interurban transportation. These two entities continued with their operations until after World War II, when the ownership passed on to the Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Metropolitan Coach Lines, respectively. By then the railroads needed new equipment, track rehabilitation, and, of course, more money-paying patrons. Lack of grade separation of railway facilities from other traffic increased commute times and encouraged travel by private automobiles. The romantic era of hopping on a Pacific Electric Company "Big Red Car" was coming to an end. As early as 1917, in fact, bus lines were substituted for unprofitable rail service. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LMTA) was established in 1951 by the California Legislature to study and plan for improvements in the public transportation facilities in the Los Angeles area. In March of 1958 the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority took over the operation of the two lines.

HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation. Thereafter, each case was dealt with on an individual basis, being based upon whether or not the tumour was of the oat cell type, a cumulative exposure in excess of 120 WLM; latency periods in excess of 10 years, commencement of mining prior to

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. The objective of this investigation was to verify the effectiveness of commercial and synthetic depressing agents in a complex oxidized zinc mineral flotation flowsheet using sodium sulfides and amine. The flotation tests were run on a finely-disseminated calamine ore grading 16.96% Zn and containing smithsonite, hemimorphite, cerussite, calcite, quartz and iron oxide, present essentially in colloidal form. The reagents used in the testing can be grouped into four classes: guar, starch, celluloses and acrylic polymers having various degrees of substitution and molecular weights. The depressants exhibiting the greatest selectivity towards the gangue (considered as a whole) are tripolyphosphate, polycarboxylic acids, methylcarboxylate guars and ethyl hydroxylic starch. In the rougher stage, the Zn recovery ranged from 70% to 80%, and the Zn grade ranged from 27% to 29%. In the Zn-Fe2O3 separation, the compounds ensuring the most efficient separation are the tripolyphosphate and the polycarboxylic acids. In the Zn-SiO2 separation, the compounds that exhibit the best separation efficiency are tripolyphosphate and guar of methylcarboxylic sodium salt. In the case of the Zn-Ca separation, methyl-carboxylic guar exerts the best depressing effect and does not adversely affect the Zn recovery. The separation provided by ethyl hydroxylic guar is also good, although not as good as the preceding reagent. Regarding the Zn-Al separation, the tripolyphosphate, the celluloses and the carboxylate guars are the best depressants. A hypothesis is advanced to interpret the depressing action of the most effective reagents.

Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). Unexpanded Graded perlite applications in: a) Phosphoric Fertilizers industry (additive in H3PO4 production), b) Foundry technology (slag-aid, insulating and heat resistance agent).

The major source of water for Southern Nevada is Lake Mead. However, the existing pump station located on Lake Mead is inadequate for one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. In order to keep up with the increasing demand for water in Las Vegas, a parallel system is being constructed. The intake for this system is being constructed approximately 68.58m (225ft) below the surface of Lake Mead. The lake tap consists of installing casing and secant piles to support the shaft collar, excavating a 21.34m (70ft) deep intake shaft, and installing a3.66m (12ft) diameter steel liner.

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.
