The mined geologic burial of high-level nuclear waste is how the favored option for disposal. The underground repositories must keep the waste away from the biosphere for very long times - several thousands to tens of thousands of years. Also, access must be maintained to the vaults for several tens of years, so that the waste can be retrieved, if necessary. Both the excavation of the underground chambers, and the radiogenic heating will disturb the rock mass. The overall rock mechanics problem is to understand and predict the processes associated with these perturbations, and their impact oh the isolation and containment of the waste (3)**. The specific rock. mechanics issues which have been identified for the three candidate hard rocks (basalt, granite, and tuff), are summarized in Table 1. The table also indicates the level of adequacy of our knowledge in the areas of the various issues. Such an evaluation is consistent with the general consensus of the rock mechanics profession, as explained in several key reports and publications (1 to 11). The main shortcomings of today's rock mechanics for waste repositories can be summarized as: ? lack of resolution for remote mapping of fractures in rock masses ? great difficulty in testing large volumes of rocks to determine their mechanical properties.

In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

Future Florida phosphate reserves contain higher MgO than presently mined deposits. The high MgO content is contributed by dolomite and Mg-rich clay, palygorskite. Selective flocculation was attempted to reduce the MgO content of apatite in synthetic mixtures of apatite with dolomite and palygorskie. Mixed mineral selectivity was predicted in the apatite-dolomite and apatite- palygorskite systems with Poly(ethy1ene oxide) (PEO) flocculant. Loss of selectivity in the mixed mineral systems was primarily attributed to heteroflocculation, which was minimized by addition of a Site Blocking Agent (SBA), a lower molecular weight fraction of PEO, prior to addition of the flocculant. A 80:20 mixture of apatite-dolomite (or palygorskite) was upgraded as 95% apatite at more than 80% recovery level in the product fraction.

Introduction It is generally accepted as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulps from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" of relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that coarse gold particles can contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations. But, while the process of sampling is probably the major source of error, the analytical process cannot be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. To maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must also be kept in control. One method of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard materials, whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared, nor can they be prepared, to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for both preparation (i.e., comminution and splitting) and fire assaying and then come to conclusions only about the fire-assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would, in most cases, completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay-standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process. Because the objective of the assay standard is to provide information about the fire assaying, it is necessary to control the sampling error of the standard material, so that it is only a minor constituent of the discrepancies observed in any assay results. To do this requires that the particle size of the standard material be reduced to a point where the relative standard deviation of the sampling error (i.e... the standard deviation of the errors divided by the average gold content of the material) is 2% or less. For all but very homogeneous mineralization, this means that the material must be reduced to 100% -150 mesh before the sampling errors are adequately controlled. However, even reducing the particle size can contribute to sampling problems. The liberation of gold may cause segregation that can cause large sampling fluctuations that are not easily controlled while maintaining the desired grade. Because, in most cases, the standard material would already be in the "pulp" state when it is submitted to a lab for assay, it is not possible to entirely conceal the nature of the sample from the lab. This is a problem inherent in using assay standard material. Because of the contribution of sampling to error generation in the assay process, the use of "coarse" material does not solve the problem of submitting a totally "blind" standard to the lab. In the sections that follow, the selection, preparation, testing and use of gold fire assay standard material is discussed. While some may dismiss the production of standard material as folly, it is possible to produce and utilize standard material to stabilize and improve the fire-assay process to produce more reliable assay results. Material selection It is desirable to use material that has as nearly the same metallurgical characteristics as the samples with which the standards will be included. However, this is usually difficult. For many reasons, including the particle size at which a significant amount of the gold mineral is liberated, the sampling characteristics of even -150-mesh material may preclude the use of geologically and metallurgically similar ore as a standard. It is usually easier to get material having desirable grade characteristics with the necessary sampling properties than it is to find geologically and metallurgically similar material with the required sampling characteristics. High-grade standards are especially difficult to find and prepare. This is because, as grade increases, the size of the gold particles usually increases. Larger gold particles are liberated and tend to segregate during comminution, and the homogeneity of the material cannot be maintained. For grades much above 3 g/t (0.088 oz/ton), it is very difficult to find material that has the proper sampling properties. Old mill tailings are likely candidates for assay standards. Some of these have sufficiently homogeneous mineral contents, so that the sampling errors can be effectively controlled. Where mill tailings are either not available or are not acceptable, mineralization that has exhibited homogeneous results in reassays of the pulp material is also a good candidate for the standard. Finally, the mineralized rock being sampled may (and should) be used if adequate homogeneity in the -150mesh material exists. "Adequate" ("acceptable") homogeneity is defined below.) One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

Early flotation dealt primarily with the bulk concentration of sulphide minerals or the separation of one sulphide from another and was referred to as oil flotation because oils and fats were used as reagents. The separation or concentration of one nonmetallic mineral from another developed later with the use of fatty acids. Fatty acids are organic acids present usually as glycerides in tall oil and oils of fish, peanut, cottenseed, soya beans and ethers of veg¬etable and animal origin. Some, of these oils and their derivatives were used by the Phoenicians as early as 600 B.C. in making soap, and the use of such reagents in mineral dressing is referred to as "soap flotation". The first use of oleic acid for the recovery of minerals was the early agglomeration process.' The coarse particles of ore, from 1/16 to 1/4 inch diameter, were coated with large amounts of soap or oil and after screaming from the gangue were recovered by screening, hydraulic or table classification. In 1886, a patent was issued to Mrs. Carrie Everson in which the essential feature was the constituted commingling of pulverized ore, fat or an oil, either animal, mineral, or vegetable, for the purpose of effecting .a. union of the free metal or metallic portion of the ore with such admixed material whereby the same may be changed in subsequent separation of quartz or other rock therefrom by washing or other suitable means. The patent mentions the use of red, cotton seed, caster, sperm and linseed oils, In the early use of collectors the amount of oil for froth flotation was often 2 to 6 per cent by weight of the ore rather than pounds per ton.

The Kivcet process is technologically the most advanced of the new lead smelting processes which have been developed over the past decade construction of the first commercial scale Kivcet lead smelter which has been designed by KHD Humboldt Wedag for Sociedad Complejo Metalurgico de Karachipampa is at present nearing completion in Bolivia. Some of the measures taken to minimise emission of harmful elements as well as methods employed to minimise energy consumption in the design of the smelter, are presented. Results of recent testwork which have added to the flexibility of the process are summarised.

The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Federal and State sulfur oxide emission and ambient air quality regulations have been implemented to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970. Primary and secondary air quality standards have been established at levels considered necessary to assure the protection of the health and welfare of the public. Standards of performance under this Act have been established to control the rate of sulfur oxide emissions from individual sources so as to protect and to improve the quality of the Nation's air. The new source standards of performance were made rigorous for large coal burning stationary sources. This has had a severe impact on the electric utilities that operate the coal fired steam electric plants which are the largest consumers of the Nation's coal production. States have taken different approaches in State Implementation Plans (SIPS) as approved by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have chosen to permit moderate SO2 emission rates from existing sources which are not in critical air basins. All are required to meet primary and secondary air quality standards and to limit sulfur oxide emissions from new large stationary sources to a minimum of 1.2 LBS of S02/MMBTU fired. This re- quires a fuel sulfur percentage of about 0.7 for a 12,000 BTU/lb coal. In an effort to develop strategies and technologies to conform to performance standards while continuing and hopefully expanding the utilization of the Nation's coal supply, the electric utilities, the Federal and State regulatory agencies, and other industries and government agencies are considering several alternatives. 1. Natural low sulfur coal 2. Flue gas desulfurization - (FGD) non-regenerative and regenerative 3. Coal gasification 4. Liquefaction and solvent refined coal 5. Fluidized bed combustion 6. Chemical coal cleaning 7. Physical coal cleaning Of these options, only the first and the last can be considered to be widely used in full commercial practice at this time. FGD has certainly demonstrated technical and operating feasibility and is close to being in full commercial practice but it remains to be seen if the large systems under construction are economically and environmentally optimum.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geomechanical environment is greatly constrained by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of geometry changes, can be reasonably predicted through a coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. Verification of the model has been tested using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

As one of the more important Industrials Minerals, gypsum occupies a significant place in the economy of the United States, particularly in that segment which can be loosely called the Construction Industry. For many years, products made from gypsum have been a major building material, and the usefulness and versatility of these products is such that their widespread use is expected to continue. In 1968, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the value of all gypsum products sold in the United States was 405,000,000 - and although this value has dipped from the 1964 high of $ 432,000,000, it is expected to trend upward in the next few years to equal and surpass this figure as the construction industry recovers from its current squeeze of "tight money" and high interest rates. There are many factors to be measured in determining the potential value of any mineral deposit, and how it might fit within its particular industry. What, then, are the qualities which a gypsum deposit must have in order to profitably participate in the four hundred million dollar plus business which is the gypsum industry? First let's consider the geology of gypsum, the geographic distribution of deposits, and the more important factors such as size, grade, capital requirements, and operating cost. Then, an understanding of the uses of gypsum, various types of products, and location of markets would be helpful, along with such other factors as the structure of the industry, price trends, etc.

Hydraulic slurrying and pumpability characteristics of phosphate matrix (ore) have not been quantitatively defined. An elemental triangular diagram analysis of rock/sediment texture is used to classify the nature of the ore; then related to empirical field data of hydraulic pressureand production yardage ratios. This experiment is applied as a geotechnical tool to provide empirical data of ore slurry and pumpability characteristics as key considerations in the design of slurry pipeline systems. A real texture variability maps are developed on a section of land to assist mine engineering planning.

A prevalent technique for the recovery of silver from wastes generated in silver-tungsten electrical contact fabrication is electrowinning. Such scrap is placed in a permeable plastic basket which constitutes the anode compartment and this basket is suspended in a larger cell in which the cathode is mounted. A silver nitrate solution is used as the electrolyte and, upon application of an electric field, the silver migrates to the cathode where it deposits out. At times, there is tungsten migration to the cathode compartment and consequent co-deposition with the silver. This W contamination, which may amount to several thousand ppm, necessitates additional purification of the deposited Ag and its removal would therefore be advantageous. The elimination of the W impurity would also extend the operating period of the cell with corresponding increase in the Ag output and savings in labor costs.

Canada's gypsum industry began more than 200 years ago in the Maritime provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's 10 provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.4 Mt (9.3 million st) of crude gypsum, and 17 processing plants manufactured 2.5 Mt (2.8 million st) of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production. However, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum pose a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.
