One of the steps in an ore reserve estimate is customarily a rigorous calculation of the in situ grade of the orebody itself. The result of this calculation is usually reduced by some purely arbitrary factor to force the calculation to agree with the observed grade of ore actually mined. The failure of the calculation to realistically depict the grade of ore actually extracted is in many instances not the result of either an incorrect calculation procedure or of sloppy mining practice, but is a direct consequence of unsuspected irregularities in the contact between the orebody and the surrounding wall rock. A pattern of holes spaced at 1.5-3.Om foot intervals, drilled as part of a pre-development program, will often reveal that a presumed "regular' ore/waste contact is, in fact, so highly irregular that it will be next to impossible to separate ore from waste during mining. In such an instance, 'fingers' of waste projecting into the mining block will substitute for equal volumes of ore left outside the mining limits. As a result, the grade of material actually mined will be less than the grade envisioned for the orebody. The volume of waste substituting for ore in the mining block is about 0.4X, where X = the average error in projecting the ore/waste contact between alternate holes in the test pattern, and is expressed in units of volume per unit of area of the contact surface.

Since the advent of machine coated paper in the mid 1930's, the kaolin industry has had a remarkable growth, In 1935 the domestic production of kaolin was 500, 000 tons and in 1970 the estimated production was in excess of 3. 5 million tons. The process industries which use kaolin most extensively are paper, rubber, paint, ceramics, plastics, catalyst manufacturers, ink, and pharmaceutical. The paper industry is by far the largest consumer of kaolin using approximately 70 per cent of the total tonnage mined and beneficiated. Up until 1970 the major kaolin producers were able to expand rapidly enough to supply the demand but for the first time in thirty years the demand is expected to be in excess of mining and beneficiation capacity through at least 1975. The major reason for this is the expansion of coated paper production in Europe and Japan. Two areas supply the lion's share of kaolin for the world markets. These are the Cornwall area in extreme southwestern England and a limited area of Georgia and South Carolina in the southeastern U. S. The English kaolins are primary - (found in decomposed granite) whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are secondary - (found in lenticular, continuous beds in the Tuscaloosa formation of Cretaceous age. ) The English kaolins are mined by hydraulic methods whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are mined by dragline or shovel and benefidated by using a wet process for the majority of the production and/or a dry

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

Ambient electromagnetic (EM) noise (natural or manmade) is a major limiting factor for the design and operation of many electronic devices, including through-the-earth (TTE) communications and tracking systems. Extensive studies on EM noise were conducted by the US Bureau of Mines in the 1970s and 1980s. Changes in the design and operation of electrical equipment since then, however, have resulted in changes in the EM noise environment. This paper reviews past research on surveying EM noise in the extremely low-frequency (ELF) and very-low-frequency (VLF) bands, which are the operating bands for TTE systems, and introduces a new battery-powered, rugged, portable measurement system for surveying EM noise in mining environments. Examples of surveyed EM noise measurement results in and above an active underground coal mine, using the new system, are presented in terms of absolute magnetic field strength levels. A new metric, average noise level (ANL), is introduced to characterize the noise level relative to a particular frequency band for a specific location. It is found that EM noise in mining environments varies significantly with time and location. EM noise levels at frequencies of 30 Hz that shifted from power harmonics (e.g., 90, 150, 210, 270 Hz) are relatively low and their variation with time can be statistically modeled by a Gaussian distribution. The conclusions and findings presented in this paper can help better design and operate TTE communications and tracking systems in underground mines.

When Eugene Bailey asked me to contribute to this session on "Canadian exploration - 1976", it took a little coaxing before he got me to agree. My immediate reaction was, what could i say about Canadian exploration that already had not been said a hundred times in the past few years; secondly, why include a banking person in such a discussion? Everyone knows banks only come into the picture after the discovery has been made and feasibility well established and validated. Rather than wrestle with these misgivings, I decided to take the easy way out and go on blind faith in Eugene - that is, he asked me so he must think that I could come up with some useful thoughts and at least touch upon some of the pros and cons of exploration in Canada. The object of the whole exploration exercise is to Find economic deposits, once they are found, one cannot really move them elsewhere to mine them. It follows, therefore, that we should really be speaking about the pros and cons of mining In Canada and my treatise will eventually lean in this direction. In any event and before getting down to the pros and cons, let us take a quick look at the history of mineral resource development in our country since the end of world war II. At that time, we were producing well under one billion dollars worth of mineral products including hydrocarbons.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump…) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch…), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment) Intermediate gearboxes are not required when a motor is used with a rated speed that directly matches the speed requirement of the driven equipment. Furthermore the VSD can be used to smoothly start the motor and to vary speed during operation, which means that it satisfies both requirements."

The ball mill grinding circuit has widespread application in mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy and research. It faces some challenges because a grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which high interaction between loops, variation of system parameters with time, and time delays are problems. In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning proportional–integral–derivative (FLST-PID) controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of ball mill grinding circuits. It is combined with an improved disturbance observer (IDOB) to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit.

INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. Acid neutralization titrations were applied to the characterization of soil and overburden for the control and prediction of acid rock drainage in the coal fields of the eastern United States in the 1970?s (1). These became known as the Sobek methods as a result of the early United States Environmental Protection Agency publication and the methods have been modified (2) to be adapted to many applications in the metal mining sector (3,4,5,6,), and, as a result, there are a large number of acid neutralization potential methods being used that are referred to as Modified Sobek methods. Standardization of neutralization potential methods for metal bearing ores and related materials based on carbonate carbon, rather than titration, commenced in the 1990?s through the American Society of Methods and Materials (ASTM) Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metal Ores and Related Materials Subcommittee E01.02 on Ores, Concentrates and Related Metallurgical Materials (7). A subcommittee section, E01.02.05 on Environmental Methods, was organized to coordinate the method and material standardization efforts of ASTM and the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) Prediction Committee (8), which took on the project of standardization of the acid neutralization potential acidity titration method (ANPA) to supplement the carbonate carbon method in E1915 (9) for application to samples which have metal carbonates (10), in particular, which result in overestimation of the neutralization potential using the carbonate carbon methods (11).

A series of diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in the Pittsburgh Research Center's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine products-of combustion (POC) spread rates along a single entry under zero imposed airflow conditions. Six experiments with an average fire intensity of 330 kW and three experiments with an average fire intensity of 30 kW were con- ducted in a 180 m long entry which had an average 2 m height and 4 m width. POC spread rates were measured by the response time of diffusion type CO detectors, positioned at 30 m intervals, to CO concentrations 5 ppm above ambient. For the 330 kW fires, average POC spread rates of 0.22, 0.1 3, and 0.06 m/s were determined at 30, 60, and 90 m distances from the fire. For the 30 kW fires these average spread rates were reduced to 0.08, 0.04, and 0.04 m/s. The measured maximum roof layer temperature 30 m from two of the 330 kW fire was 30 and 36"C, which is less than the 57°C alarm point of a typical mine thermal sensor. It was determined that smoke detectors can be more effective for mine fire detection than CO detectors. The experimentally determined POC spread rates can be used to provide guidance for specification of sensor spacing to improve early fire detection at zero or very low air flows.

"In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

Longwall-induced deformations could jeopardize the mechanical integrity of shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine. The in situ and induced fracture networks surrounding the gas well could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. Hence, this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) develops a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to characterize the fractures in the overburden based on geomechanical analyses of mining-induced fracture apertures at a study site in southwestern Pennsylvania. The apertures from the geomechanical model are used to develop a stochastic DFN model of the site in fracture flow code (FFC). Multiple realizations of the stochastic DFN model that replicate potential fracture geometries are simulated, and the fracture permeability is compared with field measurements. A maximum field measurement of 5.03 × 10− 12 m2 (5080 mD) and 3.82 × 10− 13 m2 (386 mD) was estimated over the abutment pillar at the Sewickley and Uniontown horizon, respectively. The results show that the average permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with the field measurements. In addition, the comparison of all the field measurements and 100 DFN realizations show the model is representative of field conditions. These findings provide critical information regarding fracture characteristics in the overburden, which will further be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a casing breach for an unconventional gas well.

Froth flotation technology is the backbone of the minerals pro-cessing industry where minerals are concentrated by selective separa-tion; either direct or in-direct flotation. In direct flotation useful minerals are conditioned to become hydrophobic (water-repellant) and attach to air bubbles while impurities (non-useful particles) remain in water. The hydrophobic particles are transported by air-bubbles to the top froth (foam) layer in flotation tank which can be removed as a concentrate. There are many factors that controls this selective separation process such as: particle’s degree of hydrophobicity, size, mass loading, air holdup and bubble size distribution. Turbulent fluctuation of the slurry in the tank is another important factor that controls the collisions rate between particles and bubbles and hence attachment rates. The turbu-lent fluctuations are measured by the local distribution of turbulent dissipation rates. Conventional flotation machines are restrained by residence time of the slurry that is about 3-5 minutes that results in a large footprint and limits the capacity of flotation plants. The designers of conventional flotation machines try to reduce the footprint of flota-tion tank by scaling up the flotation machines to increase plant throughput. The scale-up process reduces the specif power consump-tion and the local distribution of shear rates and turbulence dissipation rates. This scale-up results in a larger mean bubble size and lower particle-bubble attachment rates.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) was established in 1932 in response to proposed regulations that would have threatened prospectors in Ontario. From there, the association grew to represent the interests of Canada?s mineral exploration and development industry. The PDAC?s mission statement reads: ?The PDAC exists to protect and promote the interests of the Canadian mineral exploration sector and to ensure a robust mining industry in Canada. The PDAC will encourage the highest standards of technical, environment, safety and social practices in Canada and internationally. ?Today, the PDAC?s 6,000 individual members include prospectors, developers, geoscientists, consultants, mining executives and students. In addition, the association?s membership includes 950 corporate members, representing senior, mid-sized and junior mining companies in addition to organizations that provide services and equipment to the mining industry. In 2010, the PDAC adopted its e3 Plus principles, a framework to guide its membership in responsible exploration.

"The third phase of the Bagram Drainage System project at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan included construction of a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel. The tunnel penetrated mostly stiff to hard clayey and silty soils. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to use pipe-jacking with a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) instead of the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance method was evaluated and supported using hand calculations. Contractor support was provided throughout the project by providing design reviews and instrumentation monitoring during construction. This paper compares the value-engineering proposal to the specified method and describes the construction conditions encountered. INTRODUCTION As part of a larger improvement project at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel was constructed to provide additional capacity for Coyote Creek to pass below several critical structures, including taxiways and the main runway, for mitigation of recurring flooding (see Figures 1 and 2). Overburden over the tunnel crown ranged from about 3 m to 5.5 m. An existing cast-in-place twin barrel concrete culvert runs approximately parallel to the new tunnel and is within about 8 m at its closest point. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) method (steel ribs and lagging or steel liner plate with a carrier pipe later grouted in-place) called for installation of the required drainage pipe by pipe-jacking (one-pass installation) using a slurry microtunnel boring machine (MTBM). The critical nature of the operations at the air base resulted in significant construction coordination challenges and a greater than usual need to avoid excessive settlements. Substantial restrictions were placed on drilling of investigative borings and installing instrumentation near runways and taxiways due to drill mast height. The prime contractor was SERKA TAAHHUT INSAAT A. S. (SERKA), the microtunneling subcontractor was Ludwig Pfeiffer Microtunnel GmbH & Co.KG (Pfeiffer), the jacking pipe designer was Gollwitzer Pipe and Shaft Technology GmbH (Gollwitzer), and the contractor’s tunnel engineer was Lachel & Associates, Inc. (Lachel). Lachel provided contractor support throughout the project including preparation of a VECP/Design Summary (including interpretation of existing and new geotechnical information), design reviews for jacking pipe, estimating settlement of an existing drainage structure above the new tunnel, and instrumentation planning, monitoring, and analysis during construction."

Environmental protection, economic prosperity and respect of the need for social equity promotion, constitute a prerequisite for any modern industry aiming to operate in a sustainable manner. The Natural Stone industry in Europe, a sector comprising mainly of SMEs, despite the fact that consists a dynamic extraction sector, often lucks the resources to apply novel techniques and management schemes towards achieving sustainable performance. I-STONE, an EU Integrated Project funded by the 6th Framework Programme, is aiming to contribute in the improved performance of the Natural Stone industry. A primary project objective is the re-engineering of the stone production chain, in order among others to considerably in-crease its efficiency and productivity, and minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed. The present paper, resulting from the research con-ducted on environmental management within I-STONE, is focusing on the use of sustainable indicators as a tool for the assessment of the stone industry?s performance. Based on Commission Decisions and reported studies, a list of indicators was selected and used within I-STONE, including environmental and socio-economic indicators. A set of selected environmental indicators were quantified based on operational data of a number of Greek and Portuguese quarries examined as case studies. The analysis indicated that an integrated strategy, including the application of novel operation techniques and equipment, waste minimization and systematic environmental monitoring and reporting, constitute key factors for the sustainable operation of natural stone industry.

Jerry is the maintenance planning supervisor and is in charge of preventative maintenance and maintenance scheduling. Jerry's group uses predictive tools to monitor and predict the equipment failure throughout the mine, from pumps to shovels to motors, you name it. The title of Jerry's talk is "If You're Not Using Predictive Tools, You're Behind the Curve." I’ll turn it over to Jerry.

Underground mine roof bolting is a crucial operation for miners’ safety and mine sustainability. Since roof bolting is a manual or human-supervised operation, miners’ safety is at risk due to dust or rock falls. Traditional machine learning algorithms have shown limitations to detecting drillable areas, mainly due to harsh lighting conditions. The authors propose an adaptive deep-learning framework for autonomous roof bolting. The proposed framework is based on implementing a binary semantic segmentation algorithm on color images to classify pixels that belong to rock from those that belong to non-rock. Significantly, the proposed framework implements deep learning semantic segmentation on images from traditional and neuromorphic vision sensors in underground mines. The performance of the proposed model shows an impressive accuracy level of at least 98% at a low number of training epochs with smooth learning curves. The high accuracy enables the implementation of autonomous roof bolting, greatly improving miners’ safety and operational efficiency while reducing human exposure to safety hazards. This research will advance the use of deep learning in mining automation and has the potential to revolutionize the traditional mining industry.
