Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

his paper describes a study of an altered mining extraction and the resulting Rockmass response at VALE?s Creighton Mine. Typically, the deep mining zones have strict stope extraction guidelines to ensure safety and productivity; however, these guidelines offer low flexibility or few options for stope sequencing. The 402 O. B. being in a good rock mass, at moderate depth and stress regime at Creighton, offered an opportunity to drive a more flexible mining sequence with stopes and a pillar. A three-phased approach was used to mitigate risk of the mining plan: 1- Numerical modelling to fully anticipate rock mass response to the proposed mining sequences. 2- In situ seismic monitoring to collect stress and seismic activity data. 3- Analysis of the in situ data to correlate to the modelling results. The creation and the extraction of a pillar in the 402 O. B. was successfully completed. The recorded seismic activity agrees well with the numerical modelling since most of the seismic activity is localised in the hangingwall where the deviatoric stress corresponds to an early damage process. The moderate levels of deviatoric stress cause localised failure with low level of seismic activity.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

The Bohemia mining district is a small but intensely mineralized area in western Oregon . For its size , it has made a substantial although somewhat sporadic production of gold throughout a long period of years . The veins also contain lead, zinc , and copper, but in the past these metals have not been recovered in important amounts . In reviewing the progress of mining activity in the district , an effort has been made to gather under one cover all available information on former operations , including methods of mining , production, and geology pertinent to the ore deposits , problems encountered, and other factual data that may affect future mining in the district . A special effort has been made to assemble as many maps of former workings as possible in order that these may be preserved and readily available to assist in future exploration. The data presented herein are based on brief reconnaissance examinations made during several weeks spent in the field in September 1946. These are supplemented by information obtained from various individuals actively or formerly connected with operations in the district . Only the principal properties and several of the more outstanding prospects were actually examined. Many of the older workings were inaccessible.

Since the 1957 initiation of deposition of mill tailings at the Heath Steele mine, New Brunswick, periodic detailed studies of the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy have been conducted, thereby providing a unique opportunity to examine the geochemical evolution of a sulfide rich mine>tailings impoundment. When deposited, the tailings contained about 85 wt% sulfide minerals, 1 wt% to 3 wt% carbonate minerals, and 12 wt% to 14 wt% alumino silicate minerals. Mineralogical examination of samples of the tailings from deep in the impoundment indicates that little oxidation occurred prior to tailings deposition. The mill process-water deposited with the tailings was neutral to slightly basic and contained low concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As. Sampling of the tailings five years after deposition indicated that sulfide-oxidation reactions, occurring near the tailings surface, had decreased the tailings-water pH and increased the concentrations of Fe, S042-, Cu, Zn and Pb (up to 10 000 mglL, 25 000 mg/L, 2.5 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 4.5 mg/L, respectively). In 1975, ten years after decommissioning, the tailings could be divided into three zones: an upper oxidation zone in which sulfide oxidation is actively occurring, a hardpan layer, 15 cm to 20 cm thick, composed of tailings cemented by secondary Fe minerals, and an underlying reduction zone in which the tailings are relatively tin oxidized (Boorman and Watson, 1976). Chemical analyses indicated the presence of low-pH waters containing very high concentrations of SOi-, Fe, and other metals (up to 63 600 mg/L SO42-, 28 600 mg/L Fe, 10 mg/L Pb, 600 mg/L Cu and 4000 mg/L Zn), suggesting that there was a period of intense sulfide oxidation between five and ten years after tailings deposition. More recent sampling, conducted some 20 years after the end of tailings deposition, indicates that relatively little change has occurred in the last ten years, thereby suggesting that the hardpan layer has provided an impediment to the downward movement of dissolved constituents. Analyses of the tailings solids show increased accumulations of many metals at or near the depth of the hardpan layer. Evaluations of the long-term evolution of the tailings can be enhanced by comparison of descriptions of the tailings with descriptions of the gossan that overlay the massivesulfide orebody prior to mining. At Heath Steele, this comparison suggests that many of the mechanisms controlling the distribution of metals in the tailings will probably persist over geologic time.

Barrick Gold Corporation in conjunction with SNC Lavalin Engineers and Constructors have developed basic engineering design for counter current decantation thickener (CCD) plants capable of processing 44 000 t/d. To achieve this throughput in a single train, the largest high-rate thickeners installed to date have been utilized in concert with large process slurry and solution transport systems. Process reliability and plant operability and maintainability have been carefully considered in order to develop a practical, yet cost effective design. The design also incorporates the challenges associated with installation of large equipment and structures in a remote location, with a climatically hostile environment, situated in a high seismic activity zone.

O menor erro possível em um protocolo de amostragem é chamado de erro fundamental de amostragem (FSE), o qual está associado à heterogeneidade constitucional do minério e pode ser estimado através de testes de heterogeneidade. A realização do teste de heterogeneidade com minério fonte de zinco, proveniente da mina de Vazante, permitiu concluir que a heterogeneidade da willemita é menor que a heterogeneidade de minérios de ouro e maior que a de minérios fonte de alumínio, por exemplo. Além disso, os resultados do teste de heterogeneidade permitiram a otimização do protocolo de preparação de amostras do laboratório físico, reduzindo o erro total de 13,4% para 6,0% sem investimentos em infraestrutura de laboratório.

Due to environmental concerns in urban construction, many typically simple projects become very complex or feasibly impossible. The introduction of relatively new concepts has redefined "impossible", again simplifying these projects and making them "possible". Case Study One covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York. Innovations in the design, material and installation method solved many typically inherent problems on projects of this type and resulted in cantilevered walls that supported a 35ft (10.668m) excavation. Design predictions and actual measured deflections of this wall were within millimeters. Case Study Two covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Hodogaya Bypass in Yokohama, Japan. Innovations in equipment development allowed for a cantilevered retaining wall to be constructed without affecting the adjacent right-of-way, dramatic reduction of the overall construction duration and installation of tubular piles in soils with SPT N values greater than 160.

Consider the case of a mining company with N investment opportunities in projects of different commodities. The problem is: since the company has limitation of capital, equipments, technical staffs, etc, what is the best portfolio of production projects in order to maximize expectations from shareholders? In the no-longer past, the traditional method for the selection of portfolio of projects was the rank-an-cut method. But, this does not properly account for the risk to which the company is exposed. The Markowitz?s Mean-Variance is an advance because the risk of the NPV can be estimated at the level of the company or even division of the corporation. The final product of the Markowitz?s model is the efficient frontier, in which, the manager can clearly understand the maximum return from existing assets and the associated risk level - but this model does not recommend which one is the best portfolio. In this paper we present a model to select the best portfolio considering not only economic indicators, but also requirements of production, constraint in investments, etc. We show that if investors are diversified, managers should select projects with highest return, regardless of risk. However, in practice, if bonuses of managers are tied to their performance, the choice for portfolio with lower return and risk can happen. Numerical application considering typical portfolio of large mining company is used as example.

Many investigators measured surface forces between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces using atomic force microscope (AFM). Some investigators observed long-range attractions and attributed them to the presence of hydrophobic forces, while others suggested that they are artifacts of the nano-bubbles and cavities associated with the hydrophobic surfaces. Still others suggested that the long-range attractions are due to the electrostatic interactions between charged patches present on opposing surfaces and hence are unrelated to surface hydrophobicity. In the present work, we have measured long-range attractions between gold- (or silver-) coated surfaces hydrophobized in potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions at pH 9.2 under controlled potential conditions. The results of our AFM force measurements are consistent with those of the contact angle and voltammetry experiments, indicating that the long-range attractions are hydrophobic forces.

Some of the major challenges associated with underground mining at depth and/or under high extraction ratios are related to the resulting high stress levels, which can lead to the failure and collapse of the rock mass surrounding the excavations. Sudden and violent failures, which can have severe consequences, represent the highest degree of difficulty in terms of underground personnel exposure, erratic and unpredictable production, ground rehabilitation requirements, possible reserve losses and overall mining costs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

Designing a blast is a complex planning task, which for optimization, includes deciding the bench geometry with respect to the rock properties & geology of the area, capacity of the excavators, choice of explosives & detonation method, tiring sequence, etc. Optimization of blast design needs a detailed comprehensive study of all the above intersecting elements. Preblast & Post blast surveys are required for further improvements in blast designs. However, the choice of blast design depends upon the the requisite blasting results opted for and the cost you are ready to pay for the same. The blasting operation, in general, also involves numerous side effects namely, ground vibrations, fly rocks, dust, noise & gas pollution, air blast effect etc. Again these effects can be made tolerable up to a certain extent depending upon the limitations of the environmental obligations as may be specified by the concerned authorities.

Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). As the U.S. coal industry scrambles to cope with serious economic difficulties, it is appropriate to examine some other difficulties that have their origin in certain provisions of that ten year old law, and that bear directly on the economic viability of surface coal mining in the west. This paper focuses briefly on three technical issues in the reclamation of surface coal mines in arid regions, and suggests that innovation can resolve these issues. The coal industry operates within a narrow legal context, defined in 1977. In enacting SMCRA, Congress listed among the purposes of the Act ?... to...strike a balance between protection of the environment, agricultural productivity and the Nation's need for coal as an essential source of energy." I maintain that such a balance has never been struck, particularly with regard to the reclamation of mines in the west. One reason is that when SMCRA was enacted its supporters were aware of uncertainties about the potential for successful reclamation of western surface mines. Over the intervening years, as a recent Congressional study report (OTA, 1986) points out, "...the risks these uncertainties may pose to the long term success of western reclamation have been reduced significantly." Unfortunately, SMCRA's enforcement agency, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) has not yet recognized this fact, and the western coal industry is paying the price.

Ah electronic thermogravirnetric balance was used to measure the veductioiz rule o single cirpric oxide particles suspended in a stream of hydrogen. Very jzne thermocouples embedded in lie center and at the surface of the sphere recorded the variation of terw perature during reduction. In contrast to iron oxide reduction, where in most instances the rate of interface reactiokl is controlling, the heat- and mass-transfer phenotnena play a predolrinant role in the reduction of cupric oxide. The correlation of experitnental data or tnass lransfev lhrough the boundary layer at Reynolds nunlber 0-4 50 was as jollocs: ThE reduction of cupric oxide by hydrogen is represented by the equation: It is a highly exothermic reaction and the amount of heat released varies only slightly with temperature (-21,430 cal per g-mole at 400°C). Most of the published studies on this system have been conducted at temperatures in the range of 34 to 280c.l-&apos; The concensus of opinion has been that at temperatures below 200°C the reaction is preceded by an induction period during which there is very little or no reduction. The length of this period diminishes as the temperature of the reaction is increased1l5 and aseawa found that at 280°C reduction starts practically immediately when the oxide is exposed to hydrogen gas. The existence of an induction, or incubation, period has led experimenters to believe that the reduction of CuO by hydrogen is catalyzed by metallic copper.&apos; Boldurev and rmolaev found that mechanical additions of powdered copper to oxide did not affect its reduction, although metallic copper produced during the reduction seemed to have a catalytic effect. At least three other authors2&apos;5&apos;7 have reported that addition of copper had no effect on the rate of reduction. Pease and alor&apos; observed that water vapor had a strong inhibiting effect on the reduction at 1503C, but its effect was greatly diminished at 200 C. Pavlychenko and Rubinchik5 studied this reaction at 159 to 235 C and found that, once the reaction had been initiated, there was no inhibiting effect due to the introduction of water in the hydrogen stream; at temperatures above 183°C there was no inhibiting effect due to water vapor, either before or during reaction. The same authors noted that the rate of reduction was independent of pressure in the range of 200 to 700 mm Hg. aseawa investigated the kinetics of the CuO-Hz system at 160 to 280°C and estimated the apparent activation energy at 14,000 cal per g-mole. A similar value (13,500 1200 cal per g-mole) was reported by ond&apos; in the temperature range 148 to 216°C. Bond also reported that there was no incubation period and that water vapor had no inhibiting effect on reduction at temperatures above 190 C. The above studies have been conducted at temperatures below 280°C and the physical configuration of the system under investigation has not been defined adequately. However, it is well-known that the mechanism of gas-solid reactions depends on a number of in series physical and chemical rate prcesses.&apos;&apos; It is, therefore, essential to include among the experimental factors the geometry of the solid system and the mass-transport characteristics of the reducing gas. Scott studied the reduction of packed beds of cupric oxide cylinders by Hz-He streams of very low hydrogen concentrations at temperatures 400 to 600 C, pressure of 10 to 30 atm, and gas velocity from 0.18 to 5.8 ft per sec (3 < Rep < 30). The reduction rate was found to be mainly controlled by diffusion through the boundary layer and through the pores of the reduced copper phase. The following correlation was proposed: Scott in an earlier work studied the reduction of fixed beds of cupric oxide wire and found that the rate of flow of the gas stream through the bed had a controlling effect on the rate of reduction. The same mass-transfer phenomenon was observed by Bond and clark13 on a similar reduction system. The analogy between mass and heat transfer through the boundary layer which exists between a solid surface and the bulk stream stems from the similarity of the differential equations representing these phenomena

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys has been measured by the Sieverts&apos; method between 1550°and 1700°C. Solubility data and standard free energzes and enthalpies of solution for nitrogen in the alloys are presented. Interaction parameters are discussed and presented for binary and ternary alloys. MOST of the studies of nitrogen solubility in liquid metals have been directed toward the dilute alloys of iron. Several of these investigations have included measurements of the nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni al10s&apos;- and in Fe-Co alloys.435 There has been some work, however, that has extended across the e-i-" and F-CO" binaries. This investigation was undertaken to determine the nitrogen solubility in both binary and ternary alloys of the Fe-Ni-Co system. It was also hoped that the differences between earlier studies might be resolved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This investigation was made using a Sieverts&apos; apparatus described previously." The nickel (99.85 pct) and cobalt (99.9 pct) were obtained from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Ltd., and the iron (99.95 pct) was Fer-rovac-E obtained from Crucible Steel Co. Recrystal-lized alumina crucibles were used throughout the entire investigation with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. Melt temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer and the temperature scale calibrated against the melting points of the three pure metals. The emissivity of the melt was assumed to be a linear function of composition for all alloys, as has been shown for Fe-Ni alloys.lZ The emissivity of the pure metals at 1600°C were taken as 0.43 for iron, 0.44 for cobalt, and 0.45 for nickel. Using these emissivities, the trans mis sivity of the system was found to be 0.51 i 0.01. The Sieverts&apos; method was used for this study and followed the procedures outlined previously.l&apos; The individual metals were weighed to give about 100 g of alloy. The alloys were melted in the crucible under a partial pressure of argon. The system was evacuated, and the "hot volume" was measured with argon. To avoid the errors caused by vaporization, the melt was held under vacuum only long enough to ensure that all of the gas in the system had been removed. The influence of any small amount of vaporization on the "hot volume" was shown to be negligible by measuring the "hot volume" after a run. This measurement agreed with that made at the start of the run within the implicit error, 0.2 cc, caused by the limitations in accurately reading the buret. The solubility-pressure relationship was measured in the pure metals and in several alloy compositions throughout the ternary system. These measurements were made by admitting measured amounts of nitrogen to the system, and then determining the equilibrium nitrogen pressure above the melt. This method has the distinct advantage of higher accuracy, particularly at lower pressures, than measurements made by withdrawing gas from the system to reduce the pressure after determining the solubility at 1 atm nitrogen pressure. This latter method has a practical lower limit of about 0.4 atm where an increased error is encountered because the buret must be emptied to permit further measurements at lower pressures. By determining the relation between apparent solubility and pressure, it was possible to make a good estimate of the initial nitrogen content of the metal from the intercept of the solubility curve extrapolated to zero pressure.11 DISCUSSION The solubility data corrected to 1 atm nitrogen pressure are summarized in Table I. The reported solubility has been corrected for the initial nitrogen content of the alloys. The initial nitrogen contents fell between 0.0002 and 0.0010 wt pct, and were lower in the iron and nickel than in the cobalt. Sieverts&apos; law was obeyed in all alloys at pressures up to 1 atm. Examples of this behavior are shown in Fig. 1. The reaction for solution of nitrogen is Taking the standard state as 1 wt pct N in the alloy and the reference state as nitrogen at infinite dilution in the alloy, and noting the adherence to Sieverts&apos; law, K becomes the solubility of nitrogen in the alloy at 1 atm pressure. Thus the solubility data of Table I were used directly to calculate the standard free energy for the solution reaction. These results are also presented in Table I. The enthalpy of solution is also summarized in Table I as calculated from a form of the van&apos;t Hoff relation: Iron-Nickel System.
