The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a temperabilidade de uma liga Fe-Ni-Cr. Amostras do material foram submetidas a temperaturas de encharque de 800ºC e 1100ºC e resfriadas utilizando salmoura e nitrogênio líquido. Para a caracterização do material, foram realizadas análises de EDS, MEV e DRX para se determinar, respectivamente, a composição química das fases, a microestrutura e a transformação de fases que podem ter ocorrido. Os resultados microestruturais não mostraram evidencias de transformação de fase, mas que houve o surgimento de maclas de deformação associadas à ciclagem térmica. No entanto a difração de raios-x para amostras tratadas a 800ºC, com aparentemente segregação intergranular, evidenciou alguma transformação de fase.

Advancements in support technology have occurred to a large extent because of the demands of the mine operators. Shield supports are no exception. The most notable changes in shield technology in the past decade have been increases in shield capacity and life expectancy, which have increased by a factor of 4 and 7 respectively since the inception of the shield support 25 years ago. The purpose of this paper is to set goals for the future generations of longwall shields. These goals include: (1) 100,000 cycle life expectancy, (2) improved hydraulic diagnostic capability, (3) smart load control with adjustable setting pressure algorithms, (4) composite material design to reduce weight and increase shield width, (5) constant set leg cylinder design, (6) improved joint design to reduce wear and stress, (7) advancements in leg cylinder socket design, and (8) an instrumented shield to measure in-service structural component loading. These design issues will continue to push the envelope in longwall shield technology that has provided the safest and most productive mining system employed in the history of mining. In preparation for this, a historical examination of shield failures is made and recent trends in shield design are evaluated. Design practices to improve structural margins of current designs are also addressed.

The problem of separating the constituents of a mixed gas has assumed increasing importance to chemical technology during the last several decades. Metallurgical practice, dealing mostly with the application of gases as fuel, such as for the oxidation or reduction of ores, has not often confronted an important need for such separations. If theory occasionally has indicated advantages in the use of purified or separated gases, as for example the "dry" blast for the iron furnace or oxygen-enriched blast for a variety of smelting operations, the economics of the proposals has not often been satisfactory. It has seemed evident that the practice of the chemical plant was too expensive with regard to installation or material costs, or both, for the needs of the basic smelting industries and indeed was applicable commercially to metallurgical purposes only when the metals in question were especially valuable or pure. This bulletin deals with a new mechanical means of attacking the problem of separation. Although it is improbable that any one type of separation could hope to find universal application, the method described is to be regarded as an alternative to conventional means that has attractive possibilities in certain instances. It extends the number of methods previously available by one that has not before been applied commercially and that utilizes a well-known property of gases that never has received effective technologic attention.

"Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) residue was mixed with shale and fly ash as the main materials to make solidification/sintering brick for the utilization of the residue from EMD production. The effects of sintering temperature, sintering time, solid waste content and cooling process on its mechanical properties and toxic elements solidification were investigated according to compressive strength and leaching toxicity. The results showed that the calcined residue had capability of solidifying toxic metals and exhibited perfect strength after treated in the optimal parameters of EMD residue below 50%, temperature at 1000-1100°C, time3-5h, and semi-quenched at 600°C1 InstructionSolid clay-brick holds the leading position among building materials for a very long time in China. The traditional technique of making clay-brick has the drawbacks of backward process, simple facilities and single product. Since Chinese Reform and Opening-up, urban-rural construction and real estate have been booming with the rapidly development of national economy and science technology. The problems of ruining fertile land, environment contamination and high energy consumption in the traditional technique of clay-brick making have not been solved yet. On the other hand, more than 7 billion tons of industrial wastes are accumulated over years which occupies over 6.7 million hectares filed and causes serious environmental problems[1-31. Strategy present in ""The Chinese Agenda of the 21st Century"" required the production of wall materials less energy conservation, land saving and waste recycling.Coal gangue[4-9l, fly ash[I0- 13l, sludge from waste water treatment and tailings of gypsum, pyrite, copper mine, high silicon containing iron, asbestos and ects [l4-lSJ are the solid wastes used for brick making around the world. There are two kinds of process for brick making, high temperature sintering and low temperature steam curing[19•201. Although the technology of two brick making made great progress and got widely application in construction field, no precedent for preparing sintering-bricks with EMD residue as materials occurred in China because of its complicated processing technics and lack of sufficient practical experience to guarantee the bricks' quality.In this study, EMD residue was mixed with shale and fly ash as the main materials to make solidification/sintering brick. "Abstract Vibration limits for buildings with respect to ground vibrations from pile driving published in international standards are reviewed. At first, relevant vibration parameters are defined and the evaluation of vibration records is described. The sensitivity of structures to different vibration parameters (displacement, velocity and acceleration) is discussed. Most vibration standards relate to blasting activities, the dynamic characteristics of which can be significantly different to those from construction activities and in particular, pile driving. Several vibration standards are reviewed. The Swedish vibration standard is described in detail, as it is the only one accounting for several important factors, such as ground conditions, building material, and type of building foundation. Many standards limit the guidance to values based on the dominant vibration frequency and a wide scatter of frequency-dependent vibration limits exists. It is difficult to compare limiting values of ground vibrations proposed in different standards.1. INTRODUCTIONFor poor ground conditions, placing structures on piles is the most common foundation solution, while sheet piles are widely used to support deep excavations. Piles and sheet piles must often be installed in the close vicinity to buildings, structures or installations in the ground, which can be affected by ground movements and vibrations, (Massarsch and Fellenius, 2014). In many areas, environmental concerns with respect to noise and ground vibrations can restrict or even prohibit driving of piles or sheet piles or reduce the efficiency of installation. The design engineer must prescribe – often at an early stage of a project — the permissible levels of ground vibrations in order to minimize the potential risk of building damage. When seeking guidance from the literature, little or practically no applicable information can be found on how to assess permissible levels of ground vibrations."

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as 1892, at Point Albino, Canada.4 The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence urea by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of west Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is mane of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen sulphide. A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc.Eng (Mining Engineering) degreeThe optimization of the cycle time to increase productivity at Ruashi Mining was an on-site project investigation conducted from December 2017 to January 2018. The main objective of the investigation was to determine the actual cycle time components. These comprise the queuing time, loading time, hauling time, and dumping time of ADTs (articulated dump trucks). Data was also collected on two hydraulic shovels to identify where these could be optimized. The actual cycle time obtained was compared to the theoretical cycle time to ascertain the constraints, which affect productivity. By applying Systems Thinking to the cycle time, man-made constraints of the actual cycle time were identified and recommendations to mitigate them suggested to optimize the cycle time. However, rainfall is a natural constraint that adversely affects the actual cycle time, and which cannot be mitigated.In addition, both the theoretical and actual cycle time were analysed, as well as the theoretical and actual productivity for the year 2017. Based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations were made to optimize the cycle time. IntroductionThe aim of the project was to increase Ruashi Mining’s productivity by 39%, from about 7.537 Mt of broken material mined to 12..367 Mt targeted in 2017.BackgroundRuashi Mining is a copper (main commodity), cobalt (by-product), and acid producer located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 10 km from the city of Lubumbashi. Figure 1 shows the location of the Ruashi Mining open pit.Ruashi Mining started production in 1911 and in 2005 the mine was registered as a DRC company owned by Metorex Group Limited. In November 2013, the Chinese company Jinchua Group International Resources Co. Ltd. bought a majority stake in the business. Ruashi Mining currently produces 38 000 t of copper and 4400 t of cobalt per annum. The company has contracted NB Mining (a contract mining company) to transport its ore. To optimize the productivity of the mine, considering ore flow delivery at Ruashi Mining, the cycle time is the indicator used in this project. The cycle time components were recorded on site using a stopwatch."

This paper discusses the worldwide market and cost environments for the bulk ferroalloys namely manganese alloys (ferromanganese, silicomanganese), ferrosilicon and ferrochrome (high-carbon ferrochrome, charge chrome). Annual average market prices since 1993 are presented graphically and analysed, and the main supply and demand trends for manganese, ferrosilicon and ferrochrome are summarized. The paper shows carbon and stainless steel output data for 1995, 2000 and 2005, mainly to demonstrate the rising importance of China as a ferroalloys market. Developments in ferroalloys capacity worldwide from 1991 to 2007 are discussed (plant start-ups and closures, ownership changes). Finally, the paper examines developments in the main cost factors for the bulk ferroalloys, i.e., chrome and manganese ore, electricity, carbon reductants and labour. Note that data for 2006 are estimated based on information available in November 2006.

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. The Federal Surface Mining Law enacted in 1978 is now being translated into regulations which must be followed in future coal mining. Substantial change to mining procedures is required to maintain stricter air and water control while mining and to return the mined out land to equal or better use than before. These changes do not come easy; and in most cases, they create a substantial additional cost. Based on field observations and mining studies, Caterpillar has been making suggestions on the use of their types of equipment to conform to the new standards at the least cost. This paper will be a brief review of some of the overburden stripping and reclamation methods suggested by Caterpillar. A production and cost comparison of dragline, scraper/dozer and truck, loader systems in 20 to 150 ft. Overburden conditions illustrates potential cost savings using mobile equipment.

"AbstractThe construction of a distribution centre of minerals for a global mining and resources cooperation demanded the control of deformations and displacement of the stack reclaimer facilities on very inhomogeneous subsoil conditions. The variation of quality from soft clay with CPT values below 1 MPa up to rock formations were the challenge in design and execution of all the foundation works.The advanced design considerations were resulting in a barrier wall system to limit the deformations of the up to 40 m deep bored pile of the stacker-reclaimers, whereas the layout of the barrier wall and the stiffness of the elements had a major impact on the residual lateral forces to be absorbed by the bearing structure.IntroductionA large international raw material distribution organisation is currently building an iron ore and pellet distribution centre on the north-western coast of Malaysia. The distribution centre will handle around 90 MTPA (million tons per annum) of iron ore and includes accompanying plants for loading and unloading iron ore and pellets, pelletizing plants as well as corresponding storage space for these raw materials. The total storage space extends about 800m north to south respectively 1400m east to west and is about 200m from the coastline. The project area is located in a wide valley basin, bounded by a range of hills to the north. The existence of soil with low bearing capability in the area designated for the plant meant that measurements for ground improvement were required in the storage areas, in order to combine the needs of iron ore and pellet storage areas with requirements of the loading facilities as the overall project demand.Project LayoutThe iron ore distribution centre and the pelletizing facility both consist of an import/export jetty, material handling facilities, pellet plant and the associated infrastructure. This publication describes the execution of ground improvement and foundation works for the loading and storage system, which consists of five rows of stockpiles and four intermediate rows of stacker-reclaimers. The total area of these systems comprises 278,881 m2 (Fig. 1)."

A new type of personal sampler for quantitative estimation of atmospheric concentrations of contaminant gases was first reported from this laboratory in 1972. The sampler requires no pumps or flow regulators and employs instead the motion of the gas molecules them-selves to furnish the power for sampling. Under this grant, work was completed on development of a kit for the field determination of both NO2 and NO. Detailed instructions for the preparation of the samplers and the use of the kit was supplied to the Technical Project Officer. Attempts were made to adapt the same type of sampler to the measurement of SO2 and CO. Both gas chromatographic and turbidimetric procedures for the final estimation of the S02 proved to be unsatisfactory. For CO no reagent was found which would react sufficiently rapidly with this gas to utilize the essential feature of the diffusion sampler, the maintenance of a diffusion gradient which is at least approximately numerically equal to the ambient concentration. A number of publications on use of the NO2 sampler, both at occupational and community air pollution levels, have resulted from this work.

The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a classic suspension bridge founded on concrete caissons. Caisson construction was complicated by the proximity of the existing bridge piers, only sixty feet away. High capacity plate anchors were used successfully to moor the new caissons in currents as strong as seven knots during construction.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

Records over the past ten years indicate that there is potential for serious multiple accidents due to engulfing associated with rockpasses. Significant attention is not usually given to the design of rockpasses, with the implication that mistakes leading to poor performance of the passes are often repeated. This paper outlines general guidelines for the design, support, operation and rehabilitation of rockpasses based on information obtained from the limited amount of literature on the subject.

The health & safety of all workers in an underground environment is paramount to the success of our operations. The diesel emission reduction projects are key to improving such an environment. However, care must be taken to reduce the risk to personnel during such tests and prevent exposure to other hazards. VALE Inco works in a close partnership with its unionized employees, manufactures, suppliers, researchers and government officials to ensure projects are done safely and efficiently to successful completion. The Creighton Mine Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) project is an example of such a project that is currently under way to evaluate new and innovative technology that will further our search for improved environment for our workplace. This paper will discuss the issues and processes that are followed to ensure Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) field tests are conducted safely and productively.

My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores
