The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar, através da Espectroscopia UV-Vis, os diferentes estados de oxidação da Polianilina (PAni) obtida pela síntese química, através da reação da anilina em meio ácido e persulfato de amônio como agente oxidante, sob agitação constante e baixa temperatura. A caracterização da condutividade elétrica foi determinada através da técnica de medidas de 4 pontas. Foi possível verificar a obtenção de um polímero com características condutoras, através da observação, nos Espectros UV-Vis, dos picos que caracterizam o sal esmeraldina, sendo este o estado de oxidação da PAni que apresenta propriedades condutoras. Além disso, conseguiu-se obter valores de condutividade elétrica relevantes para confirmar a obtenção da PAni condutora.

The increase in electrical resistivity, ?pT,at 78°K was measured as a function of elongation, E, at 78°K for a 2 pct (approximately) by weight finely divided alumina in silver material. The amount of increase in electrical resistivity (?pT) is a function of the amount of alumina present and can be represented by: ?pT = cen where c and n are constants. The constant c increases and the exponent n decreases with increasing alumina content. Approximately 33 pct of the resistivity increase is recovered upon annealing at room temperature. RECENTLY, dispersed phase alloys' have shown promise for use at elevated temperatures. These materials have a high creep resistance, a high-temperature strength considerably above that of the pure matrix, and a high electrical conductivity. These materials also show other properties such as retardation of re crystallization and resistance to flow even above the melting point of the matrix.' It is believed that high-temperature creep is retarded in these materials because the dispersed phase blocks the motion of dislocations. According to schoeck3 and also Weertman,4 the rate controlling process is the climb of dislocations around the dispersed phase particles. Any mechanical property of these materials, or any other material for that matter, can be explained on the basis of defect structures and their interrelations. It would certainly be interesting to learn something about the effect of a dispersed phase on dislocation densities and also their effect on point defect concentrations following cold work. This is the purpose of the research discussed herein. The method used was the measurement of the electrical resistivity as a function of elongation at low temperatures. This scheme has already been applied to the studies of pure metals.5 Electrical resistivity measurements conducted on pure metals such as copper, silver, gold, and so forth, have indicated that defects such as vacancies and dislocations are formed during deformation.5 It has been shown by van Bueren6 that the resistivity change, ?p, should increase with elongation, E, according to the following relation: Ap=Al/2 + B£3/2 where A and B are constants of the system; ?p is in µ? cm. The first term refers to the amount of resistivity change associated with line defects and the second term with the change associated with point defects. A later calculation yielded exponents of 3/4 and 5/4, respectively.6 Manintveld7 has shown that the resistivity of copper increases with strain according to a 3/2 power law, whereas van Bueren has shown that the resistivity of silver increases according to a 5/4 power law. Assuming then that van Bueren's calculations are correct, it appears that line defects contribute very little to the electrical resistivity. There is some doubt, however, as to the validity of van Bueren's expressions for all cubic metals.' In fact, the data on copper and silver are not conclusive. In this in-

The advantages of producing a fine mill feed have been recognized for many years. The extent to which fine crushing can be carried out will vary and depends on the ore characteristics, plant and crusher design. Unfortunately, the ore characteristics are generally beyond our control, so the concentration of effort lies primarily on the plant arrangement, equipment design and operation Where fine crushing should stop and grinding begin is controversial and is influenced greatly by personal opinions and experiences. Often, this break point will be different if consideration is being given to a new plant in comparison to a modest expansion. Most new plant designs employ the largest and most efficient equipment. The modification of existing plants becomes more complex because of the space requirements and the related equipment already in operation. Fine crushing is, of course, a relative term. Obtaining a final crusher product of minus 3/4" is commonplace today and can occasionally be obtained in an open circuit final crushing stage.

These notes are submitted, not as a discussion of the modern practice of electrolytic-copper refining, but as the record of a refinery that was among the pioneers in the field and that is to-day, and has been for 17 years, operating under conditions not to be found in any similar plant in the country. I refer to the current density, which is at least 60 per cent. higher than that regularly employed elsewhere, and to the fact that the anodes treated are the direct product of the converter rather than of the reverberatory furnace. The writer has no knowledge of any other refinery treating anodes of this character.

"INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 65 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. on the south shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation started in the fall of 1965 with a capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition was put into operation late in 1968 to bring the nominal capacity up to 8,000 tpd. The present milling rate is 11,000 tpd.With a feed grade of approximately 2.9% Pb and 6.0% Zn the annual concentrate production amounts to roughly 130,000 SDT of lead concentrate and 370,000 SDT of zinc concentrate for a total of 1/2 million tons of product.This tonnage is moved by railroad. Pine Point is served by the Great Slave Lake Division (G.S.L.) of the Canadian National Railways which connects to the Northern Alberta Railway System (N.A.R.) at Roma Junction, at Peace River, Alberta. The system in turn connects to the CNR and the CPR in Edmonton, Alberta. From here the concentrates move inland chiefly to Trail, B.C., with some shipment to other Canadian and U.S. smelters, and to the port facilities of Pacific Coast Terminals at New Westminster, B.C. for offshore export.This paper will focus on the problems associated with the movement of lead and zinc concentrates from Pine Point to port facilities on the west coast."

En este sentido, el objetivo del trabajo estriba en seleccionar la alternativa más conveniente y así cuantificar los costos y beneficios derivados de la construcción de un camino de vinculación entre los proyectos mencionados y las localidades de Rodeo o Las Flores. La metodología aplicada es la comparación entre costos y beneficios entre las situaciones “con proyecto” (obra ejecutada) y “sin proyecto” (situación actual), de forma que en un futuro, la construcción del camino estudiado posibilitará el abastecimiento de insumos a los yacimientos ubicados en el Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan.

Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 6oo,ooo lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgCO3), usually is associated with limestone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgCO3CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amorphous) forms.2 The more common crystalline mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories. The deposits are extensive, some veins being hundreds of feet wide. The boundaries of the veins are indefinite, and the magnesite is interfingered with dolomite. Calcite, talc, serpentine, quartz and shale are disseminated through the deposits. The quality of the ore cannot be determined by appearance or by simple tests; chemical analysis is required. These features make it difficult to determine the boundaries or total quantity of workable ore.3 Only the higher-grade ores are mined, and a considerable proportion of the magnesite content is discarded by hand-sorting and log-washing methods. After calcining, the sorted product meets the specifications for usual refractory material, as it contains approximately 81 per cent MgO, 7 per cent Si02, 6 per cent CaO and 6 per cent Fe203 + A1203. A sample of the reject material had the following analysis after calcining: 65.4 per cent MgO, 6.3 CaO, 21.1 Si02 and 6.5 R203. The percentage reported as R203 includes compounds whose chlorides are acid-soluble but give precipitates in ammoniacal solution that are ignited and weighed. The more common constituents are Fe203, A1203 and Ti02. The sorted magnesite product is not the best grade, even for refractory purposes, and leaves much to be desired for a reduction process. The rejected material contains a large proportion of magnesite. It is apparent that an effective concentration method would yield a higher recovery and a better product. The bacterium?Mvcobacterium Phlei has a demonstrated potential to be used for the flocculation of a variety of finely divided minerals. The microorganism possesses both hydrophobic surface and high negatively electrostatic charge. It can adhere to many mineral surfaces ?if the charge and hydrophobic interaction? between the microorganism and the minerals are favorable to adhesion. Experimental results showed that the dolomitic phosphate slime from Florida and fine hematite can be :readily flocculated from dilute suspension.. In the case of dolomitic phosphate slime, a consolidated sediment containing 24'-25 weight% :solids can be obtained from .a dilute slurry .in a short time. Sediments obtained from hematite flocculation are rather massive and more .consolidated than phosphate slime. Mycobacterium Phlei has a specificity for selective flocculation of hydrophobic fine coal particles from pyrite and ash containing minerals. Because of mutual hydrophobic interaction of coal and Mycobacterium Phlei, it was noticed that coal particles appear to be strongly held in the aggregate by adhesion or bridging of bacteria. However, Mycobacterium Phlei is not a good flocculant for either associated pyrite or ash present in coal.

Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

Através dela, foi possível realizar cinco experimentos em amostras metálicas submetidas a diferentes preparos, dentre eles: análise qualitativa, cálculo do parâmetro de rede, análise de orientação preferencial, análise de tamanho de cristalito e análise quantitativa. Os resultados obtidos foram condizentes com o previsto pela teoria, ratificando a eficiência da técnica.

Native asphalt was produced in 1982 by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries, Inc., Uvalde County, Tex. Historically, gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, had been mined by American Gilsonite Co. and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. from properties near Bonanza, Uintah County, Utah. During 1982, Hydrocarbon Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Oberon Oil Co., entered into a joint venture with Miocene Resources Inc. of Novato, Calif, to form Hydrocarbon Resources Co. for the purpose of mining gilsonite about 50 miles south of Vernal, Uintah County, Utah. Under the agreement, Hydrocarbon Mining contributed gilsonite-bearing properties held by lease or sublease as well as mining equipment to the venture. The property contained leases totaling 760 acres with probable reserves of 268,000 tons of gilsonite. Miocene Resources provided the partnership with a minimum of $200,000 to develop two of the leases and were to be responsible for management of the mining operations.2

"Various full-scale test programs and installations of the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) have provided evidence that pre-concentration of the difficult to leach sulphide mineral through gravity can provide significant increases in economic recoveries. The continuous gravity concentrates are intensively treated either by re-grinding or Intensive Cyanidation. Data from various mine sites worldwide is presented. Treatment of complex ore bodies with this low cost methodology may render previously uneconomic ore bodies financially viable and assist in the recovery profile of transitional ore.INTRODUCTIONThe use of gravity is made extremely attractive in complex ore situations due to the low cost of operation, typically a few cents per ton operating cost and lack of chemicals.Gold mines which suffer from poor recovery due to complex mineralogy such as Stibnite, Arsenic, Carbon, Telluride, Silver and other pacifying agents such as Iron, which can form coatings, can all benefit from the process proposed in this paper. The key issue is not overall recovery as much as one of economic recovery. The key to this is maximised recovery at the lowest possible capital and operating cost. Other options such as flotation are reviewed but are not seen in many instances to be the panacea due to issues discussed in the paper. The use of the InLine Pressure Jig in the re-circulating load of the milling circuit is a cost effective means of recovering a sulphide/gold concentrate containing the complex mineral assemblages which require re-grinding and intensive leaching for optimised gold recovery.The benefits of Jig Assisted Grinding (JAG) are many and the challenge over the past years has been developing, understanding, implementing and evaluating the benefits of various flowsheet models. This has involved the reconciliation of results in plant scale trials back to the original laboratory test program. The following paper outlines the insights gained in this area through extensive work carried out by many people across both laboratories and plant sites in Australia and overseas. The examples in this paper are some of the work carried out on a few selected sites but similar work has been carried out on other sites such as Penjom, Granny Smith and Agnew. This work has eventuated in several installations which we believe have great importance in the future of the gold processing industry. They will lead the way forward to the modern all-gravity plants of the future.Compared to flotation, for the recovery of sulphides, gravity is a simple option. The simplicity generally translates to low capital and operating cost."

"Abstract The continued concentration of building activities in cramped areas of city centres means more underground construction and facilities. Demand to minimize execution time and any kind of disturbance to business, general traffic, people and nearby technical structures is increasing. To answer these challenges foundation business has to develop schedule-wise and technically reliable deep excavation and foundation solutions in vulnerable surroundings and challenging soil conditions.Drilled pipe pile wall – RD-pile wall – is a combination of Ruukki drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections. Individual RD piles, typical diameters between 219 mm to 610 mm, are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole hammer (DTH) using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings.RD-pile walls have been used as permanent and temporary retaining walls for different kinds of demanding excavations and structures, such as bridge foundation, as quay wall and as sealing structure in rehabilitation of an existing dam. Rigidity and watertightness of the lower end of the RDpile wall is being researched as well as fire design issues examined. One of the most fascinating RDpile wall solution is to utilize the wall as a permanent underground basement wall. Reliable and rigid connection to bedrock decreases the bending moment and deflection of the wall and good fire resistance in addition to large variety of pile dimensions and steel grades gives possibilities to design and execute a cost-efficient basement wall and foundations without temporary retaining wall works. 1. IntroductionIn northern Scandinavian soil conditions, installation of sheet pile walls, or even secant pile walls, is often problematic due to the existence of hard and large boulders in the overburden, and especially when the retaining wall structure should penetrate to or into the hard bedrock. On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid-1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers)."

One problem of reservoir engineering is the early estimation of the size of newly discovered reservoirs. Often these reservoirs are the expansion type in which sizeable pressure drops occur incident to the production of small fractions of the oil reserve, above the bubble point, and a material balance equation may be solved to find the reserve. The early form of this equation' considered only the compressibility of the oil. Later Hall2 showed that the compressible nature of the formation rock is a significant factor in production above the bubble point, and he presented a new equation which includes a formation (rock) compressibility term. This note presents a further extension of the material balance equation as applied to volumetric, unsat-urated reservoirs above the bubble point by including a term for the presence and compressible nature of the interstitial water.
