General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. The convenience of mechanical arrangements for handling ingots, blooms, billets, bars, beams, etc., and feeding them to the rolls, is so universally recognized as to require no demonstration. In the rolling of heavy beams, such as are now coming into general use, such arrangements are practically essential, by reason of the difficulty and expense of the manual handling of the large masses of metal treated. I submit herewith the drawings of a rolling-mill feed-table, designed and patented by myself, which I think will be found simple in construction and operation, not likely to get . out of order, and efficient in performing the work for which it is intended. Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, taken on the line I I of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line II II of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line III III of Figs. 1 and 2. As the details of the drawings are numbered throughout, and the same number always indicates the same part, I cannot more clearly describe the mechanism than by giving the following key to these numbers: Nos. 2 and 3 are the sets of rolls (here shown as three-high rolls, though that is not absolutely necessary). Nos. 4, 4 are the two feed-tables, one on each side of the rolls. The uide frames of the tables are made of parallel channel-bars. I HAVE chosen for my subject a mining district which in an article published four years ago I referred to in the following words: "One of the un- usual anomalies of mining development and history is that a district having added thirty or more millions of wealth to a principal mining state, situated within four to six miles of two transcontinental railways and two auto highways, and within 150 miles of the most widely advertised part of the United States, should have been so completely lost sight of that probably not one mining man in ten can tell offhand where it is situated." But this district never was a dead one: it was only slumbering. During the past four months, day by day, it has been emerging from that state of slumber.

"A field test was performed to investigate the applicability of electroosmosis with the injection of saline solution of Taipei silty clay. The calcium chloride solution and sodium silicate solution were used as the saline solution for the injection in this test. The results of this study indicate that injection using calcium chloride solution and sodium silicate solution during the electroosmosis to increase drained water from cathode and electro-chemical reaction can greatly improve the effect of electroosmosis and shorten the time of treatment. The results of field vane tests showed that the undrained shear strength after treatment increased an average of approximately 120% for a treatment period of 24 days.INTRODUCTIONThe first field application of electroosmosis in soil was demonstrated by Casagrande in 1939. Since then, more complete field applications of electroosmosis such as Bjerrum (1967), Fetzer (1967), and Lo et al. (1991b) have been made.The results of field electroosmotic work for a period of 120 days were presented by Bjerrum et al. ( 1967). The mean undrained shear strength, Su, increased from 18 to about 40 kPa, with a uniform surface settlement of about 0.5 m. Lo et al. (1991b), with a more sophisticated installation and a relatively larger spacing, also had positive results. For a 3 m electrode spacing during the treatment of a period of 33 days, the mean Su increased from 18 to about 25 kPa. Although the effect of the electroosmosis could be applied in the field based on the above examples, the response remained slow. For actual field work, the application of electroosmosis will be limited due to short project schedules and request of the effect of improvement."

Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

In the 1990?s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead?s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to Department of Interior agencies and others concerned with the planning of the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . The field investigations in Meagher County were made during tually all 1948 ; Vir- known metallic mineral occurrences within the county were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated . The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long-inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings are caved; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

OUR combined economic activities have as their goal the maximum of individual well-being and national security. In this age of intense international competition the two objectives are closely related. For many decades, the maximum of well-being and ability to maintain national security have moved generally upward. The best single measure-perhaps the only adequate measure -of the level of the rising goal is the per capita real national income (national income corrected for price changes). For centuries before the industrial revolution the income of the world's population changed little from generation to generation. In our country prior to 1800 the growth of national income was hardly measurable from decade to decade. Since 1850, perhaps since the "industrial revolution," the growth of per capita real income has been increasing geometrically. "AbstractThe paper identifies the major components of price change which affect the determination of the internal rate of return of a mining project. It illustrates several price indexes which may be used to measure general price increases, identifying techniques which might incorporate them into mine valuation procedures. The ""hurdle rate"" for new investment is discussed.IntroductionDECISIONS regarding the value of an orebody and whether or when to mine an orebody are based on an estimate of the cash flows which would be associated with its exploitation. These pro-forma cash flows represent cash in or out of a possible mineable deposit and include exploration and construction costs, sales revenues, operating expenses, taxes, debt borrowings, interest and debt repayment. It has long been recognized that when combining the cash flows occurring over the life of the mine, dollars received or paid out early have greater value than those received or paid out later. This time value of money has been incorporated into mine evaluation calculations through the use of present-value or discounting techniques. Another factor affecting mine valuation, inflation, is not accounted for by valuation techniques now in use. In recent years, price changes have become more volatile. In the past, price change could easily be ignored when evaluating potential mines. Today, the combination of larger investments and greater price volatility leads to great concern about the effects of price change on mine valuation."

The effect of change in slag composition upon metal losses to the slag and the relationship between slag composition and slag matte separation was investigated at 1400°C. The synthetic slags containing CaO, MgO, SiO2,, A1,0, and FeO were similar to those employed in the electric furnace smelting of sulphide Cu-Ni concentrates containing PGM (Precious Group Metals) from the Merensky Reef of South Africa. The matte with a grade of 9.3% Cu and 16.0% Ni was a typical electric furnace product. The results indicated that the Cu and Ni solubility in the slag increases with the increase of the basicity ratio and CaO and MgO contents of the slag. At constant CaO/MgO ratios the rise in basicity decreases the metal losses. When FeO and SiO2 contents of the slag are kept constant, the substitution of MgO with CaO decreases the metal losses. The relationship between slag composition and matte-slag separation was found to depend primarily on the basicity ratio and the FeO content of the slag. The net effect comes from a strong interaction of the two in such a way that increasing basicity and decreasing FeO contents deteriorate the clean separation of the two phases.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

The United States was the world’s largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1995. According to estimates from the US Geological Survey(USGS), boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 1.1 Mt(1.2 million st) yielding 602 kt (663,000 st) of B2O3 for an estimated value of $462 million. This level of production exceeded 1994 revised production figures by about 9%. The United States continued to provide nearly all its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. During 1995, about 900 people worked in domestic boron mines and plants, about the same as in1994. USGS estimated total world production of boron during 1995 to be about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), yielding about 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st) of B2O3. World production in 1995 was about equal to revised 1994 levels.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and constructed an apparatus that is capable of measuring concentrations of high-molecular-weight polymers in solution at 10 ppm and less. A means for determining low concentrations of polymeric solutions was devised that was independent of slight fluctuations in solvent quality in order to measure polymers in effluent prior to recycling of the recovered solution. The concentrations of polymers ore related to a measured pressure drop observed during turbulent flow of the solution. Low concentrations of polymers of ethylene oxide and acrylamide (frequently used as flocculants for clay waste systems) in aqueous and salt solutions have been successfully measured on the apparatus constructed by the Bureau.

The fire end explosion hazard of excessive coal-dust deposits in mines has been recognized for many years, and important measures have been developed for reducing dust formation and to alley loose dust near its source. Nevertheless, in the course of normal mining it has been estimated that 1 to 3 percent (in some thin, friable seams up to 10 percent) of the total coal mined is reduced to dust of through-20-mesh fineness. In highly mechanized, continuous mining operations the production of fines is even greater. Most dust is trapped near its point of origin and removed from the mine, but large quantities are transported by the air current and by haulage into entries, where the greatest proportion settles on the floor and the balance on the rib and roof surfaces. The latter is generally finer in particle size than the floor dust; this, coupled with its more advantageous position for dispersion, makes the rib-roof dust (also to be referred to as overhead dust) a greater potential explosion hazard.
