Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. In 1890 the population of that State was 49,000 and in 1900 it was 180,000.Statistics in respect of gold are reasonably complete, even for the years prior to Federation, and it is interesting to note that the gold declared as...

Walker at the time President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an institution familiarly known as M. I. T. I immediately proceeded to take advantage of that privilege by departing for Steelton, Pennsylvania, where I understood I was eagerly awaited by the educated officials of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

A 1/2-ton experimental coke oven was installed ac the Bureau of Mines Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial slot-type ovens. Because of the small force exerted on the oven walls in most tests conducted to date (probably owing to the practice of charging coals and blends at a moisture content approximating that normal to commercial plants operating in this district), little information has been obtained about expansion properties. Two sole-heated ovens have therefore been constructed and used as supplementary equipment for determining the expansion properties of coals tested in the Tuscaloosa oven. The reasons for constructing the Tuscaloosa oven, the details of design, the operating, characteristics of the oven and the reproducibility of results have been discussed in previous publications. 3 4 5/ The present report deals with the effects of substituting various high- and low-volatile coals for components of a selected base blend carbonized under conditions similar to those normally used for producing foundry coke. Results of tests of 11 coals and 14 blends indicate that several blends tested rave cokes having physical properties very similar to those produced from the reference blend.

ONE of a recent batch of samples from the Serra da Baliza, in the state of Parana, Brazil, contained asphalt and a dark heavy oil; and workmen on the railway from Porto União to Uruguay discovered asphalt, coming from eruptives that outcrop along the Rio de Peixe. The occurrence f asphalt in the triassic eruptives of southern Brazil, however, has been known a long time, according to Dr. Gonzaga de Campos. It is generally believed that the Botacatú sandstone is always a hard vitrified rock, from the metamorphic action f. the overflowing eruptive contacts. In this region, however, the contact metamorphism is almost nil; the sandstone is slightly hardened in a narrow zone about 20 to 30 cm. wide. In many places, the sandstone is so friable as to be easily reduced to sand, which is used-.in, mortar for building in Guara-puava and Palmas. South and west from Porto União,. this bench of sandstone is about. 50 m. thick, and is capped by a heavy bed. f basic eruptives, many of which are amygdaloids. Dr. Geo: P. Merrill, after studying the triassic eruptives collected by the Coal Commission, reached the conclusion that. "All these rocks are of typical basalt-diabases, not in any essential different other than in structure. An interesting mineralogical phase is its paucity in olivine, which in many cases is completely lacking. Professor Hussak, who carefully studied these rocks and their accessory minerals, decided that in the dikes they are granular (diabase) and, that in the lava sheets, porphyritic (augite-porphyrite or melaphyre), and that the latter pass evidently to normal diabases and are always typical of effusive rocks. The examination f many slides from dikes and sheets leads us to adopt the opinion of Professor Hussak; the rocks of the dikes are of ophitic structure, while that of the sheets show a great variety f structure and may vary from almost granular to basaltic. The great paucity in olivine had been noted by Hussak, who classes as melaphyres, the porphyritic triassic rocks in Brazil which contain olivine.

Extensive investigation has been conducted to determine the causes of a series of roof falls occurring in a room-and-pillar working located in southern West Virginia. Underground observation, along with laboratory testings and finite element analyses were conducted to search for possible mechanisms for the roof falls. Results of the investigation have led to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the roof falls. Necessary modifications of mine layout and roof support plan are proposed for improving safety and profitability at the mine.

The environment in which the surface mining industry operates today is considerably different than that of a few years ago. Increased pressure from the public, government, labor and internal industry factors calling for the fulfillment of rapidly changing expectations is especially intense in the surface coal mining industry. Such things as requirements for increased production, the Mine Health and Safety Act, environmental concerns and land reclamation, shortages of qualified and enthusiastic employees and market cycles coupled with price competition are but some of the specific items that are requiring the surface mining industry to better utilize equipment, materials, and labor resources available, There is one technical tool available which will assist management to increase productivity, improve cost control and assist in planning, organizing and operating surface mines. Industrial Engineering is that tool. Before a discussion of specific applications of Industrial Engineering to surface mining is conducted, it is worthwhile to review a definition of Industrial Engineering and the history of its development. The following definition has been adopted by the American Institute of Industrial Engineers: "Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of men, materials and equipment. It draws upon specialized know- ledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems."

Horizontal belt filters are typically used for separation of relatively free filtering solids where good post treatment is required. He horizontal belt filter is a continuous filter with an endless cloth supported on a grooved carrier belt. The belt and cloth are driven around two rollers across a series of evacuated suction boxes. The feed suspension is introduced at one end of the filter and deliquored to produce a cake at the other end. The benefits of using horizontal belt filters are good cake washing, continuous and visible processing, fully automatic operation, flexibility, high capacity and relative high speeds of operation. If required, horizontal belt filters enable efficient counter-current washings to minimize the usage of wash liquid. The horizontal belt filter has applications in the following: [? Gravity assists the cake formation and the feed can be introduced in multiple stages. 2.2 Cake Washing Once the cake is formed, wash liquor/water can be introduced onto the top of the cake via a wash launder or sprays. Multiple wash stages, co-current, counter-current or direct washing can be added by increasing the length of the filter.

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives – HydroStar® 4208, DXG-F7® and Cyquest® N-900 – using a potentiostatic technique. The current–time data obtained at 0.16V versus the SHE were analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A/m2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current–time data from the electrolyte without organic additives, and confirmed by SEM images, indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional growth under diffusion control. None of the organic additives studied at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L with 20 mg/L chloride changed the nucleation and growth mechanism, but the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.IntroductionElectrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high-purity copper metal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992).Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents – traditionally, guar products – are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper nodules and lead to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth and dense cathodes.Recently, the use of polysaccharides, such as HydroStar 4208 and DXG-F7, and polyacrylamides, such as Cyquest N-900, has been reported in commercial electrowinning tankhouses as replacements for guar (Ashford, Clayton and Sandoval, 2012; Robinson et al., 2013; Sandoval, Morales and Bernu, 2010). However, little information has been published on the effect of these new organic additives, especially regarding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of copper electrodeposits in their presence."

Ion exchange techniques have been growing fast and spectacularly in all phases of Science for the last two decades, but still its acceptance as a unit operation in Metallurgy is resisted. Mainly this is because ion exchange procedures are thought of as glamorous techniques by which only relatively expensive metals are to be recovered. Perhaps this concept comes from the early and basic marriage of uranium and other high price metals and ion exchange procedures. The general trend is that ion exchange technique requires equipment and materials which are too expensive to economically perform a chemical step whenever "cheap" commodities are produced. However, we are here presenting a means of utilization of waste hydrochloric acid by an ion exchange technique. We have studied this from the engineering and economic standpoint in a number of variations of the main procedure discussed here and we-conclude that under proper economic circumstances, the cost of the ion exchange material as well as the equipment and labor involved in the ion exchange section, is by no means unreasonable.

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

Le traitement de placage a pour but d'assurer une adhésion suffisante de la fibre dans une matrice métallique Iors de la fabrication éventuelle de materiaux composites.IntroductionCette communication se veut un compte-rendu de nos travaux sur Ie placage au cuivre de la fibre d'amiante chrysotile, en vue de I'incorporer éventuellernent dans une matrice métallique. La fibre d'amiante est constituée de fib rilles élementaires d'un diamètre d'environ 0.02 um qui ont une résistance en tension de I'ordre de celie de la fibre de verre ou de carbone(1). Pour être efficace, la fibre de renf'ort d'un matériau composite doit d'une part, avo ir des propriétés mécaniques intrinsèques élevées, et d'autre part, adhérer solidement â la matrice pour que Ie transfert de charge s'effectue sans qu'il y ait décohésion entre les composantes du matériau.La fibre d'amiante étant naturellement soyeuse, il faut la traiter superficiellement pour que l'adhésion avec la matrice soit suffisante. Ainsi, on recouvre la fibre de phénol-formaldéhyde(2) ou de silane(3) lorsqu'elle est employée avec une matrice polymere. Dans Ie cas d'une matrice métallique, ces dépôts organiques ne peuvent resister aux températures de mise en oeuvre, d'où l'intérêt de plaquer les fibres par un dépôt métallique.Dans cette étude, nous rapportons les résultats relatifs à la methode utilisée pour plaquer au cuivre la fibre d'amiante chrysotile. "The pressure oxidation of sulfide minerals at temperatures above 200°C enables the extraction of base metals, improves the extractability of gold from refractory ores, enables solubilisation of PGEs and can be used to hydrothermally upgrade base metal-containing feeds. Fundamental studies reveal that the solution chemistry (and mineralogy of the solids) during pressure oxidation can be manipulated with outcomes that include (1) increased leaching rates, (2) lower oxygen requirements and (3) the formation of chemically more stable residues. This paper presents examples describing how these outcomes might be achieved based upon fundamental investigations.INTRODUCTION The application of pressure oxidation to the processing of gold ores and concentrates dates back several decades and continues to be the process of choice at operations such as Pueblo Viejo (pyritic gold) which host the largest autoclave of its kind in the world (Barrick Gold Corporation, 2016). Commercial application to the processing of base metals and PGMs resides with long established processes such as the Sherritt process, ore specific applications such as by Noril’sk, at Sepon etc. or has not proceeded to date beyond pilot scale testing (e.g. Phelps Dodge, CESL, Activox, Platsol). Recently there has been significant interest in hydrothermal upgrading options for concentrates including the NONOX and Toowong processes (Rohner et al., 2016; Weidenbach et al., 2016). The latter options suggest directions where sound knowledge of the underlying fundamentals enables novel outcomes and efficiencies to be obtained. It comes as no surprise that investigations similar to those underpinning these developing processes can be traced back several decades. It is not the subject of this paper to provide a historical perspective of the relevant autoclave chemistries but rather, to present some potential opportunities suggested by studies in our laboratories. Topics to be discussed in this paper include (1) control of metal extraction rates, (2) control of iron-residue composition and (3) control of sulfur oxidation and hence acid generation and oxygen requirements. The work described will focus upon the pressure oxidation of a nickel concentrate."

lntermediate phases in the binary metal alloy systems Ti-Zn, Ti-Hg, Zr-Zn, Zr-Cd, and Zr-Hg have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction methods. Gamma-TiBHg and Zr3Hg have a beta tungsten structure; TiHg and ZrHg are analogous to ordered AuCu (L l0 type); delta-TixHg and ZrHg, are isomorphous with ordered AuCu,, (L l2 type); ZrZnz is face-centered cubic (C 15 type); TiZna crystallizes in a C 14 type structure; and Zrll-, occurs in cubic and tetragonal modifications in which a random distribution of atoms exists. Additional information for the intermediate phase TiZn, is presented. THE physical metallurgy of titanium and zir-conium when alloyed with elements in subgroup 11-B of the periodic table has received comparatively little attention in the literature. Laves and Wallbaum' reported the existence of several intermediate phases in the system Ti-Zn. They identified TiZn as a CsCl (B 2) structure and described TiZn, as an ordered Cu,Au (L 1, type) crystal structure. Gebhardt' investigated very limited zinc-rich regions in the systems Ti-Zn and Zr-Zn. Phase relationships in these partial constitution diagrams were deduced from the results of thermal analysis and metallography, X-ray results being inconclusive. The first zinc-rich intermediate phase in either system was not identified. More recently, Anderson, Boyle, and Ramsey" have had occasion to refer to a partial Ti-Zn phase diagram (unpublished data) covering the region 0 to 10 atomic pct Ti, wherein two intermediate phases corresponding approximately to TiZn,, and TiZn,, were indicated. The metals used in this investigation and typical analyses as determined by the suppliers are given in Table I. The iodide-process zirconium which was used was not hafnium free. Experimental Methods Alloy Preparation: The relative ease with which titanium and zirconium combine with other elements places extensive restrictions on the methods by which alloying can be achieved. The direct current electric arc melting procedure was found to be unsatisfactory for preparing these binary alloys and for this reason solid state diffusion methods were utilized. The iodide process titanium and zirconium rods were filed by hand. Fines were subjected to a magnetic separation and classified as to size as either finer than 200 mesh or coarser than 200 but finer than 80 mesh. Powder mixtures of various binary combinations of titanium and zirconium with zinc and cadmium were compacted in a 12 mm diameter die and then placed in Vycor or quartz vials which were evacuated and sealed. The mercury alloys were prepared in a similar manner; the proper weight of liquid mercury being placed in a vial with minus 200 mesh titanium or zirconium. These ampoules were then heat treated at various temperatures and times depending on the characteristics of the particular alloy system. Upon completion of the heat treatment the ampoules were cooled rapidly and the specimens weighed. The loss in weight varied from 1 to 3 pct (except as noted in the text) and for this reason the calculated compositions were accepted as a fair measure of the actual alloy compositions. X-Ray Dif raction Techniques: Powder diffraction experiments were conducted at room temperature with a 143.2 mm Debye-Scherrer X-ray camera in which the film was placed in the Straumanis arrangement. When copper radiation was used, a nickel filter was employed, and for the cobalt target a filter of iron oxide was used. In both cases, the /i? filter was placed between the X-ray target and the powder specimen which was mounted on a glass fiber. The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

This manuscript describes the Kivcet treatment of lead-bearing materials having high contents of copper and zinc. The tests were carried out on bulk concentrates from the Zyrianovsk Mining and Concentrating complex, "Kazzinc" JSC (Kazakhstan) with the following composition: Pb 37.6%, Cu 10.4% and Zn 6.8%. Two properties of the concentrate were under investigation: their calorific value and their desulphurization rate. By adding flux, the charge properties were brought close to the properties of high-grade lead sulphide concentrate. The charge was melted with high productivity. To ensure high copper recovery, Waelz residue was added to the charge. The residue contained more than 20% carbon and about 30% iron metal. The residue was partially replaced by coke that facilitates high copper recovery into the matte. The smelting achieved a production rate of 20 t/h with one burner. Lead recovery into the lead bullion was 88.8%; copper recovery into matte was 92.3%; zinc recovery into slag was 75.5%; and zinc recovery into the fume was 5.1%.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.
