Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

Push-pull fatigue tests have been carried out at 4.2°K, 77oK, and room temperature on two poly crystalline materials of widely different stacking-fault energy (?): pure copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm) and the Cu-8 wt pct A1 alloy (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm). Constant stress-amplilude was imposed and measurement was made of the plastic-strain amplitude (ep) at saturation. Lives extended from 104 to 106 cycles. Designating lives at the various temperatures by NRT, N77, and N4.2. the ratios N77/NNT and N4.2/N77 ranged from 3.5 to 18 under the condition of common Ep . Metallo-graphic examination revealed different crack morphology in Cu-8 Al fatigued at room temperature, and at 77" and 4.2oK. At room temperature, cracks lay in or near grain and lain boundavies; at 77o and 4.2oK. cvacks were transcrystalline. Tests on single crystals of Cu-8 A1 showed that such a change in the cracking mode in polycrystallitle material accounted for a factor of- about 3.25 in N77/NRT . The longer life at lower tewperatztre (conslant cp) has heels attributed to two deuelopinents: a reduced production of the dislocation tangles and subgrain boundaries which serve as paths of rapid cracking, and suppression of oxygen chetni-sorption at the crack tip It was concluded that in both materials the luller accounted for an extension of the life at 4.2oK beyond that at room temperature by a factor of 15. XV ECENT experiments on the fatigue of Cu-A1 alloys in the so-called high-cycle range (greater than lo4 cycles) have emphasized the importance of stacking-fault energy (y) as a quantity affecting crack propagation rate and fatigue life.1,2 It was found in comparisons at essentially fixed plastic-strain amplitude that crack growth rate decreased by a factor of about 5 over the composition range from copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm) to Cu-8 wt pct Al (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm). The argument was made that, when stacking-fault energy is high, cross slip and climb are favored, so that dislocation tangles and/or subgrain boundaries form more readily under cyclic loading. Since the boundaries and tangles act as paths of rapid crack propagation ,3, 4 life is shortened as a result. However, when stacking-fault energy is reduced (as by alloying), cross slip and climb become more difficult, with the result that substructure formation is retarded and growth rate is also reduced. A purpose of the present work was to investigate the substructure effect in relation to temperature. As temperature is lowered, ? is varied only slightly (if at all), but decreased thermal activation can interfere with cross slip and climb. Thus substructure formation could be curtailed and life increased. Fatigue life in the high-cycle range is also known to be strongly influenced by environment. Working with copper, Wadsworth and Hutchings observed that life in a vacuum of 10-8 mm Hg exceeded life in air by a factor of 20.5 They isolated oxygen as the agent that furthered cracking. While the details are still unclear, a requirement in any mechanism of oxygen-accelerated cracking is that there be chemisorption at the crack tip. That could prevent welding on the compression half cycle,= interfere with reversal of slip,1, 6 or aid in breaking metal-metal bonds at the crack tip.5'7 In the work being reported here, temperature was lowered by immersion in liquid nitrogen and helium, which also served to reduce both the oxygen concentration and chemisorption rate. A possible effect upon life, i.e., a lengthening, had to be recognized. Several researchers have determined fatigue lives at low temperatures presenting their results in the form of stress amplitude (S) vs cycles in life (N) curves.8-11 Such curves reflect, primarily, the fact that metal is strengthened by lowering temperature; effects of substructure and changing environment tend to be masked. The difficulty can be overcome by comparisons based on identical plastic-strain amplitudes, and in the present work the dependence of life on both plastic strain and stress amplitude was established. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The principal materials were polycrystal-line copper (? - 70 ergs per sq cm)" and the Cu-8 wt pct Al alloy (? - 2.8 ergs per sq cm),I3 the latter being near the limit of solubility of aluminum in copper and having, therefore, the lowest stacking-fault energy in the CU-Al system. Specimens were machined from 0.118-in.-diam cold-swaged rods of high-purity (99.999 pct) copper and the Cu-8 Al alloy, the latter produced initially in a graphite boat by induction vacuum melting a mixture of 99.999 pct Cu and 99.99 pct Al. The machined specimens were annealed to produce mean grain diameters of about 0.070 mm in copper and 0.190 mm in the alloy. Specimen dimensions are given in Fig. 1. Values of the tensile yield stress, ultimate strength, uniform strain (determined by the Considgre construction), and reduction of area, for both materials at 4.2oK, 77oK, and room temperature, are listed in Table I. The Florida legislature allocated funding for the Florida State Fire Marshal (FSFM) to review the applicability of the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) Report of Investigations (RI) 8507 blast vibration limits with respect to Florida and its soils. The study also discusses whether the current blasting vibration limits set by statute are still appropriate, including a review of measured vibration amplitudes and frequencies, structure responses, and theoretical analyses of material strength and strains.

THE simultaneous influence of time and temperature upon the tempering process in steel is well known. Hollomon and Jaffe¹ have expressed the effect of time and temperature upon the progress of tempering by a single parameter, T (c + log t); where T is the absolute temperature; t, the tempering time; and c, a constant characteristic of the steel and treatment. It was found that when hardness data for plain carbon and low alloy steels were plotted vs. this parameter, a master tempering curve was obtained which satisfied all the data for a given steel and a given hardening treatment. Roberts, Grobe, and Moersch² successfully applied the tempering parameter to various tool steels, including high speed steel for tempering times ranging from 6 min to 100 hr. The influence of tempering time and temperature upon the physical properties of high speed steel has also been extensively investigated.'" Recently, the use of induction heating for very rapid tempering treatments has received attention. The authors% have shown that tempering treatments of only a few seconds duration may be successfully applied to plain carbon and low alloy steel. However, the influence of such short tempering treatments in high speed steel has not been explored. Since high speed steel is a highly alloyed steel exhibiting physical reactions during tempering that are often relatively slow and large in magnitude, it is an interesting steel for the study of tempering reactions. It was the purpose of the present investigation, therefore, to study the early progress of reactions leading to secondary hardness in high speed steel, type 6-5-4-2, and to determine if induction-tempering treatments of a few seconds duration are able to produce results equal to those of more conventional long-time tempering cycles. Experimental Details The chemical compositions for two different heats of W-Mo high speed steel used in this study are given in Table I. Table II summarizes the heat treatment given various groups of specimens cut 21/2 in. long and centerless ground to ¼ in. diam. Hardening treatments consisted of preheating to 1600°F (870°C) for V2 hr and then oil quenching from 2250°F (1230°C). Heat I was subjected to the high temperature in a salt bath for 3 min, while specimens of heat II were austenitized in a carbon-block muffle furnace for 10 min. Specimens of series E were immediately refrigerated to — 318°F (— 195°C) in liquid nitrogen following the hardening treatment to transform the major portion of the retained aus-tenite. Specimens of series F and G were subzero cooled to — 100°F (-75°C) in a dry ice-alcohol mixture. Induction tempering was performed with a Lepel high frequency converter operating at a frequency of approximately 300,000 cycles per sec. Heating cycles were controlled and recorded for each specimen using a chromel-alumel thermocouple, percussion welded to the surface of the specimen, and a modified high speed instrument with a timer previously used and described.' Temperature oscillation of the specimens, while being held at the tempering temperature, was ± 15°F (8°C). Tempering Treatments: After hardening, specimens were tempered between 900" and 1500°F (480" and 815°C) to study the progress of retained austenite decomposition and secondary hardening. The specimens tempered in salt for 1 hr (series C, G, and I) were considered to represent conventional treatment and are used for comparison with rapid tempering treatments. Several induction-tempering cycles were employed: 1—flash tempering, i.e., induction heating to the tempering temperature and immediately cooling (series A, E, and F); 2—induction heating for 60 sec at temperature (series B); and 3—double-induction tempering by two successive heating and cooling cycles (series D). All specimens tempered by induction were heated at an initial rate of 450°F (250°C) per sec except those of series E, which were heated at an initial rate of 1300 °F

Replacement of an existing movable bridge with a new low level fixed bridge would not accommodate potential future navigation traffic. In order to replace the existing bridge in a cost effective manner, while accommodating the potential future needs of the Port of Salem, a new bridge was proposed that would permit conversion to a vertical lift type movable bridge should a potential need for upstream navigation warrant such a project in the future. Drilled shafts were found to be the most desirable foundation type for the replacement of the Route 49 Bridge over Salem River. Their ability to resist scour, be constructed without cofferdams, adequately resist vessel collision forces, and accommodate conversion to a future vertical lift bridge allowed the project to meet both the needs of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Port of Salem.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

A complex rare metal ore, containing various valuable elements is used in this study. The mineralogy results indicate that the mineral composition of the raw ore is complex, and there are more than thirty-eight kinds of minerals in the raw ore, and the elements, such as Nb, Ti, Fe, REO, Be etc, always form isomorphism relationship. The REO content of the raw ore is 0.45%, and the contents of other rare metals Nb, Ta, Ti and Zr are 0.33%, 0.02%, 0.93% and 2.00% respectively, and the main gangue elements are Si and Al, and their contents are 71.84% and 8.5% respectively. The beneficiation-metallurgy combination process of ?preconcentration-reduction and magnetic separation-acidification and leaching-precipitation? is used to treat the raw ore. The preconcentration of raw ore is realized through high intensity magnetic separation, and the magnetic field intensity is 1.0T, and the rough concentrate with 2.88% REO and 1.95% Nbresidue can be obtained, and the iron recovery is 92.83%, and the REO recovery is 95.87%, and the Nbresidue is treated by hydrometallurgy process of ?acidification-leaching-precipitation?, then the rare earth oxide, niobium concentrate and zircon-bearing residue can be obtained, and the REO recovery is 80.10% and the Nbresidue and the gangue obtained from the high intensity magnetic separation process is separated by gravity separation, and then the zirconium concentrate can be obtained. The indexes of the beneficiation-metallurgy combination process used to treat the complex rare metal ore are as follows. The REO content of the rare earth oxide is 92.58% and the recovery is 58.44%. The Nb2O5 and 27.42% TFe can be obtained. Iron in rough concentrates is removed after reduction and low intensity magnetic separation, then the iron powder with Fe content over 88% and nonmagnetic rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 94.77%. The rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 80.04%. The mixture of the zircon-bearing 2O5 content of niobium concentrate is 28.34% and the recovery is 54.02%. The ZrO2 content of zirconium concentrate is 28.43% and the recovery is 52.35%. The TFe of iron powder is 89.53% and the recovery is 78.13%. Hydrometallurgical operations and many processes in the chemical industry require the separation of dissolved material from solids. One of the decisions which has to be made in designing a plant for such an operation is how this separation shall be accomplished. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth the general principles involved in such separations in order that the optimum flowsheet and equipment may be selected. Countercurrent Decantation with thickeners, or C.C.D. as it is generally known, is, of course, only one way of separating dissolved material from undis-solved. Other unit operations such as Countercurrent Filtration (C.C.F.) and Countercurrent Classification (C.C.C.) are widely used. The same principles may also be applied to centrifugally assisted decantation, as with nozzle or solid bowl type centrifugals, and to separations using screens, either gravity or centrifugal type. Another form of countercurrent washing applicable to granular materials is practiced in continuous ion exchange operations. All of these operations depend on two basic principles, or combinations of these principles. In C.C.D. type operations the solids are concentrated into the smallest possible volume of liquor in each step and the resulting pulp then mixed with a more dilute liquor and recon cen trated, the liquors separated from the more dilute stages being advanced to dilute the more concentrated liquor in a previous solids concentrate, as is shown in Fig. I. This will be termed the solids concentration-solution dilution principle, or, for short, solution dilution. countercurrent decantation- type circuits. The second principle used in washing solubles from solids is that of solids concentration-solution displacement. Here the solids are restrained from movement while wash solution is forced through the interstices in a counter-current fashion, as in Fig. 2. In the simplest application of this principle, once the "cake" has been formed, it is not disturbed until the operation is completed. In continuous filters, the cake is merely moved under the successive washes and the displaced filtrates removed as in Fig. 4. Often, however, after one or two displacement washes, a repulping step is introduced, the cake reformed and washed again. This procedure brings the solution dilution principle into play as well as the solution displacement principle. Doyon mine, Quebec, Canada evaluates the possibility of desulphurizing their tailings to produce material to be used in as cover over the acid generating tailings disposal site. Laboratory tests were conducted and showed that a single-layer cover made of desulphurized tailings placed over reactive tailings can prevent the generation of acid mine drainage. Modelling with the software Vadose/W was undertaken to optimize the design parameters, namely cover thickness, water table position, and residual sulphide content of desulphurized tailings following laboratory work. It was found that the optimal configuration includes a 1 m desulphurized tailings cover containing 0.8%S, with the water table kept at the interface between the reactive tailings and the cover. To maintain the cover performance to reduce oxygen flux towards acid-generating tailings even in the event of a long dry period, a sand layer is suggested to protect the cover from excessive evaporation. It is possible to reach the environmental objective chosen for Doyon mine (10 mol/m2/year) with the protective sand layer, even in extremely dry conditions.

An auxiliary cross-pit mining system, working in tandem with the prime excavator, is evaluated technically, operationally and economically for application in the selective removal and replacement of soils and unconsolidated ovezburden. Previous studies on cross-pit technology and applications of this technology are briefly reviewed. Stratigraphy plus pit, operating and economic parameters are assumed and applied in the evaluation and comparison of a base case dragline system with two alternatives - a dragline/scraper-dozer combination and a drag- line/cross-pit system combination. The economics of the proposed cross-pit system favour it as a viable alternative to conventional systems.

Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

R. G. K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017. The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is reviewing explosion protection methods for use in gassy coal mines. This performance criteria guideline is an evaluation of three explosion protection methods of machines electrically powered with voltages up to 15 000 volts AC. A sufficient amount of basic research has been accomplished to verify that the explosion-proof and pressurized enclosure methods can provide adequate explosion protection with the present state of the art up to 15 000 volts AC. The routine application of the potted enclosure as a stand alone protection method requires further investigation or development in order to clarify performance criteria and verification-certification requirements. An extensive literature search, a series of high voltage tests, and a design evaluation of the three explosion protection methods performed at White Sands Test Facility indicates that the explosion-proof, pressurized, and potted enclosures can all be used to enclose up to 15 000 volts AC, if the performance criteria and verification-certification requirements recommended in this guideline are implemented.

The theme of the conference is "excellence", an epithet of special significance in tertiary education. It appears in the mission statements, goals and plans to achieve them of most, and quite possibly all, tertiary institutions in Australia. In the context of excellence, this paper examines the current statue of professional education in the principal mining industry related discipline of Mining Engineering. It furthermore, identifies and discusses a number of special problems in mining education that the tertiary sector has long endured. Some of these problems are becoming acute, and solutions will have to be found soon in order for the industry to be assured of the supply of well motivated and appropriately qualified young engineers and scientists necessary to achieve and maintain the excellent to which it aspires.

"The computer program DMC (Distinct Motion Code) [Taylor and Preece, 1989a] was developed in 1988 and 1989 to predict the motion of rock following a conventional blast. DMC executes very efficiently on a CRAY type computer due to the high degree of vectorization and also due to the use of spherical elements [TayIor and Preece, 1989b]. Bulking mechanisms developed specifically for use with spherical elements include rotation-induced dilatation and aspect ratio > 1.0 [Preece and Taylor, 19901. Rotation-induced dilatation allows the radius of the sphere to expand as a function ofsphere rotation to simulate the interaction of corners and sides of blocky rocks. An aspect ratio > 1.0 is achieved by kinematically tieing spheres together."

The metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand has grown up around the Witwatersrand gold mines. Most of the mines have now been abandoned, but deposits of waste material remain and have been surrounded, and in some instances covered, by urban and industrial sprawl. This paper describes the development of geotechnical measures for the abatement of air and water pollution from abandoned gold-residue dams in the Witwatersrand area. The measures include the stabilization of the surfaces of the dams to prevent wind and water erosion, the terracing of slopes to minimize erosion, and the construction of catchment walls and dams. The measures were developed in terms of the set of guidelines for environmental protection adopted by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1979.
