This study was carried out in Ichadih to map the sulfide/gold mineralization using combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) methods. No geophysical analysis has been carried out to delineate such ore deposits in the area. Thus, the study provides a different approach for approximate location and extension of the quartz reef associated with sulfide/gold mineralization. It also provides the elementary idea for further detailed subsurface investigation in terms of geological and geophysical approach.

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. Iron Mountain Mine Rehabilitation Project Brief History The Iron Mountain Mine is located in Northern California approximately 12 miles northwest of Redding. The ore body is a large, very dense pyritic intrusion, discovered in 1860, and initially minded for silver. The silver played out quickly and 34 years later the ore body was mined for copper. Copper mining was scheduled to cease in 1939, but WWII prolonged the closure. After WWII, the pyrite ore was mined to produce sulfuric acid. In 1949 when large amounts of cheaper sulfuric acid were being generated by the oil industry the underground mine shut down. Little was done with the site conditions until 1970 when the U.S. Bureau of Mines began monitoring the pH of the effluent. The initial pH readings were around 2.0. This was lower than anyone expected. Laboratory tests showed that when the ore from the mine was submerged in water, the pH of the water would stabilize above 4.0. However, the pH got steadily lower. In 1989 with the ph around 0.7, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required the owner to build a capture and treatment facility. During this initial period, the majority of the effort was spent on the treatment plant. The relationship between the mine owner and the EPA was basically an adversarial relationship from the very beginning. In 2001, North Pacific Research was hired to upgrade the capture and control facility. The general layout of the Iron Mountain Mine is shown in Figure 1.

There is a strong demand for nickel metal due to quick development of stainless steel and new electrical materials, most of which is extracted from sulfide resources, resulting in a serious depletion of sulfide resources. Therefore, more attentions have been paying to extracting nickel from nickel laterite, which accounts for some 50% of total nickel metal production. In this paper prereducing?magnetic separation?reduction smelting process is developed to manufacture ferronickel rom two types of nickel laterite DN and GN, assaying 1.42% 1.83% Ni and 49.09% 26.08%Fetotal, respectively. Mineralogy of two types of nickel laterite was determined and optimization of process parameters was conducted to manufacture ferronickel. Prereduction?magnetic concentration process is used to upgrade low grade nickel laterite firstly, two kinds of Ni-Fe concentrates being prepared of DN assaying 2.26% Ni and 69.45% Fetotal and GN containing 2.76% Ni and 38.00% Fetotal. Finally, two types of ferronickel were produced by reduction smelting of prereduced concentrates DN and GN, DN and GN ferronickel contains 2.97% Ni and 6.58%Ni, 89.25%Fetotal and 89.95%Fetotal, respectively. The total recoveries of Ni and Fe of the two ferronickel are beyond 90% and 80%, respectively. There is significant difference in grade of magnetic concentrates and ferronickel between DN and GN laterite due to their different mineralogy, the former belongs to limonitic laterite and the latter saponite one. There are some advantages for this process to manufacture ferronickel from nickel laterite, including effectively upgrading low grade nickel laterite by prereducing?magnetic separation technique, higher throughput and lower energy available for reduction smelting section due to some 40% gangue being rejected in pre-upgrading section, and much less metallurgical coke consumption by using non-coking coal as reductant for prereducing?magnetic separation?smelting process.

"In June or July 2005, the European Commission will present its Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources proposal to the Council and European Parliament, one of the seven Thematic Strategies to be developed and implemented under the 6th European Environment Action Programme in support of the European Union’s Sustainable Development Strategy defined by the European Union’s Head of State at the Göteborg European Council, in June 2001. The time scale for this Thematic Strategy is 25 years (2005-2030). This paper discusses some of the key issues related to the EU minerals and metals industry that needs to be addressed by the Strategy. These are: - the need for access to mineral reserves in the EU and abroad; - the need to strenghten the capacity of developing countries to sustainably promote and regulate the use of their mineral potential; - the need for an EU mineral resources intelligence capacity. There are additional important needs, which are not discussed in this paper, such as: - the need to foster further innovation in mining, ore beneficiation and metallurgical technologies; - the need to integrate and simplify the exisitng complex regulatory framework applicable to the EU mining industry and to effectively implement existing legislation."

The stability of floors of large drydocks and wagon tipper sheds at coal terminals is an important matter but quite difficult to solve. Anchors can be used to join floors to foundations thus ensuring the stability of floors by the self-weight of floors and the pull of anchors. In this paper, the author describes the structures and types of the anchors used in the floors of the drydock in Beihai Shipyard and the wagon tipper shed at Shijiu Port, both in Shandong Province China, the determination of bearing capacity of anchors in rock bed of highly weathered granite, the comparison between prestressed anchors and non-prestressed anchors, the construction technology of anchors and the analysis of field experimental data.

"In producing multilayer films for magnetic data storage applications, the interfacial roughness must be controlled in order to obtain high quality materials with reproducible properties. The present understanding of the effect of roughness on multilayer properties such as magnetoresistance is sketchy, particularly for electrodeposited films. In this study, quantitative atomic force microscopy was used to characterize surface morphology before and after Ni films of varying thickness were deposited on Cu cathodes. A multinuclear multilayer growth mechanism is supported by both the deposition conditions and the AFM images, and a multinuclear multilayer model gave a satisfactory fit to measurements of the density of peaks on ultrathin Ni films between 0 and 8 nm thick.Alloys consisting of alternating ferro-and paramagnetic layers have begun to replace Permalloy in the sensing elements of magnetic hard drives. The operating principle of the new read heads is giant magnetoresistance (GMR), and they are smaller and more sensitive than previous inductive heads (1). Experimental studies on sputtered multilayers have emphasized the role of layer thickness and interlayer roughness in determining the presence and size of the GMR effect (e.g., 2,3,4,5,6). However, roughness in electrodeposited multilayers has rarely been measured, even though read heads are likely to continue to be made by this process for some time to come. Cu/Ni can be considered a model system for understanding processing-microstructure-property relationships in electrodeposited multilayers and is the most widely investigated of all such systems (e.g., 7,8,9,10,11,12). Nevertheless, the roughness of the interfaces in Cu/Ni electrodeposits has not been systematically characterized by quantitative techniques, and in all studies reported so far, the total deposit thicknesses were considerably greater than the 10 nm needed for most sensor applications (1). The thinnest such films were about 50 nm (7)."

"Suncor Energy Inc., located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, commenced pilot scale operation using a CPT 4’ diameter flotation column in March 2003. This larger scale trial follows two previously successful flotation column bench scale tests. They included an April 2002 trial with a 2.4” inner diameter column from the University of Alberta and a 20” diameter CPT column in August 2002. The column receives middlings stream feed from one of Suncor’s deep cone separation cells and is operated in parallel with a set of WEMCO flotation cells. The recovery, tails losses, and concentrate quality are being compared between the two systems. The column, to date, has been tested with all types of run of mine ore grades. Variables such as wash water flow and temperature, sparger nozzle size and location, sparger air/water flow rates, and column residence time has been adjusted to achieve better recovery and final product quality.Used in many mineral processing applications, column flotation is primarily used for the final stage of sulphide cleaning and flotation of phosphate or iron ore. As well, mechanical cells are often used in combination with a column to retrofit an operation and to produce a cleaner product.Initial results prove that this is the first successful application of a flotation column in an oilsand application. If viable, it will be an inexpensive process for recovery of bitumen from a middlings stream and able to produce a final product suitable for froth treatment.INTRODUCTIONSuncor’s oilsand is surface mined from the Athabasca Oilsand deposit north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The oilsand is then mixed with hot process water (HPW) and the bitumen is slurried in a pipeline. Large separation cells as shown in Figure 1 float off the bitumen product, which is then steam or static deaerated and sent to Secondary Extraction for further cleaning. The tails stream from the cell is sent to the Final Tails Pumphouse (FTPH) for processing. The tailings flotation froth product gets recycled to the separation cell oilsand feed. The tailings are pumped from the FTPH to tailings ponds. The middlings stream is drawn off the separation cell approximately 9’ from the froth overflow level. It runs down, by gravity, to the scavenger banks for bitumen recovery. It was from this stream off of the Line 6 Separation Cell that the feed to the Canadian Process Technologies Inc (CPT) flotation column was taken."

Solutions to the diffusion equation for a line source located anywhere in a region bounded by a circular discontinuity are presented. Such solutions follow automatically from the Green&apos;s function presented by Jaeger.4 Petroleum industry applications of this problem would include transient compressible fluid flow in porous media bounded by a discontinuity. Since several recent papers have treated the subject in less general form, it would appear that many workers in this area of the petroleum industry are not aware of Jaeger&apos;s work. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In several trearments1,2,3 of the transient flow of compressible fluids in porous media it was convenient to consider a region to be bounded by a circular discontinuity. In such a region (Fig. I), the properties in Region 1, r < a, are constant but different from the properties in Region 2, r > a. Hurst, l using the Laplace transform, obtained solutions for a line source located in the center of such a porous medium. The purpose of this work is to point out that a much earlier paper by Jaeger4 presents the solution for a line source located anywhere inside the discontinuity. The assumption is made that a line source may be used to approximate a well. In the following material it is convenient to use the terms source and well as being equivalent; however, the reader should remember the distinction in applications. SOLUTIONS Jaeger presented the Green&apos;s function for a line source, or well, in the composite region shown in Fig. 1. HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied. William F. Hosford, Jr. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)—Dr. Hauser has used a very interesting method to study the interaction of dislocations on different slip systems, but it should be pointed out that the analysis of the experiments is subject to a serious criticism. He states that "the effect of the compression can be adequately described by one slip system." The effect of frictional constraint during the compression makes this quite unlikely. When a block of metal is compressed its lateral expansion requires a sliding of the metal over the compression platens. The role of friction in the interface between the deforming metal and the platens is to increase the normal force required for the compression. Analyses1213 have shown that, in general, the additional force, p, required for the compression is a function of l/h where is the coefficient of friction, I is the length of the speci- men in contact with the platens. For a constant COefficient of friction, isho&apos; shows that P should increase exponentially with pl/h for both plane strain and axially symmetric compression. For a compression specimen, Fig. 7, whose cross section perpendicular to the compression axis is a rectangle whith one dimension L, much larger than the other W, a much larger force would be required for appreciable flow parallel to L than for flow parallel to U7. Therefore lateral strain in the W direction, EW, should be much greater than the lateral strain in the L direction EL. Since L/H = 14.5 for Dr. Hauser&apos;s crystals, and since no lubrication was used, it seems questionable that appreciable lengthening of the crystals could occur. Because the theories of frictional constraint have been derived for isotropic polycrystalline materials, it was decided to make experimental measurements on a single crystal. A section 3.590 in. long was sawed from an aluminum single crystal with a square section of 0.249 in., so that L/W= 14.4. This crystal was tested in compression between dry ground steel platens. Fig. 8 shows the orientation of the crystal and the axis of compression. The face for compression was chosen so that the operation of the single-slip system which would be predicted in the absence of friction would lead to a larger strain in the length direction than in the width direction. The dimensional changes of the width and length as well as the height were measured frequently during the compression with micrometers. Width strains were calculated from the average of readings near each end and at the center. A plot of the length strain, EL, against the width strain E w is given in Fig. 9. The slope indicates that the EL amounted to only 2.5 pct of cw. Other compression tests on similar crystals with shorter lengths also showed severely limited elongation. Even for a crystal with L/W = A.0, EL was only about 26 pct of cw. Because of the frequent interruptions of the tests for dimensional measurements should have decreased the frictional constraint by allowing a reseating of the platens, even smaller elongations under continuous testing seem probable. These tests on long narrow crystals show that essentially plane strain conditions prevailed. We may assume that Dr. Hauser&apos;s crystals deformed similarly. Discussion of the paper of E. L. deGolyer, to be presented at the Colorado meeting, September, 1918, and printed in Bulletin No. 137, May, 1918, pp. 987 to1000. J. A. UDDEN,* Austin, Tex. (written discussiont).-I have read Mr. E. L. deGolyer&apos;s paper on The Theory of Volcanic Origin of Salt. Domes, with a great deal of interest. It seems to me a very able summary and discussion of the various theories set forth to account for the origin of our salt domes on the coast. It has always appeared to me that what we need is more observations on the facts involved and I regret very much that so far we have not been able to devote much time to the study of our salt-dome fields on the coast in this State. One feature that I do not find mentioned in Mr. deGolyer&apos;s paper is the so-called "cap. rock" overlying the salt. The nature of this rock seems to vary from a coarsely crystalline limestone to a fine-grained limestone containing sand and in which the limestone seems to be intersticially introduced material. We should be prepared to accept, if necessary, "more than one theory. To my mind, the igneous theory and the artesian theory, if I may so call it, may very well both be true. The "squeeze" theory and the artesian .theory may,, it seems tome also, jointly explain the phenomena. Neither the volcanic nor the salt "squeeze" theory explains the presence of the cap rock. The latter certainly does not explain the extensive sulphur deposits which occur in association with the cap rock. Whichever additional theory will be found best to explain the salt-dome structures, when we shall know them better, it seems to me that the theory first advanced by R. T. Hill and later elaborated by G. D. Harris, is not likely to be entirely replaced. Whatever cause has first set into action an upward circulation of gases and liquids in our salt domes, it seems to me that to a gentle circulation of the kind postulated by their theory is to be ascribed the uppermost and the later phenomena in our salt domes on the coast, with which we are most familiar; such as the cap rock, the sulphur, and the gypsum and anhydrite deposits.

Tlze condition of superplasticity or neck-resistanl flow that results front high strain-rate sensitivity has been observed in isothermal tension tests on several titanium alloys and one of zirconium hi general, il was associated with reasonably fine-grain micro-structures being stvained in the transformation range at rates below i - 10 -3 sec-&apos;. The metallographic mean-free path, L, was measured at room temperature after rapid cooling from the temperature of test-ing. The flow stress of Ti-GAL-4V at 950°C was proportional to La at different constanl <; the value of a decreased with increasing. E but at E< 1.5 x 10-4 sec-1 it varied only from 0.9 to 1.25. The findings were interpreted to mean that viscous boundary shear is the rate-controlling process of deformation at high levels of strain rate sensitivity in these materials. Elongation of over 1000 pet could be obtained, but a1 temperatures so high and rates so low that any practical application of the full effect would probably be difficult. As the transformation range was narrowed, by turning from Ti-6AL-4V to Ti-5Al-2.5sn to nomznally pure titanium, the allowable temperature varialion was correspondingly reduced. Superplasticily was not found in Armco iron, presumably because the transformation range was too narrow to allow the developtnenl of a reasonably stable microstructure for isolhermal lesting. THE work represented by this paper grew out of a recent study of texture hardening in a(hcp) titanium and zirconium-alloy sheet,&apos; of which part has now been published.2 It was found that, with heating, the tensile plastic-anisotropy index, R,* was decreased from well above 1 towards 1 as the temperature range for the a(hcp) -ß(bcc) phase change was entered. The clearest example of that trend is illustrated with previously unpublished data in Fig. 1. It might have been thought that such a development resulted simply from introduction of the cubic and therefore plastically less anisotropic phase. However, the accompanying change in the index of tensile strain-rate sensitivity, m = a log a/a log E, was rapidly upwards, to a high of 0.85 in some cases (also illustrated in Fig. 1). At the same time, the total tensile elongation rose to a maximum and the flow strength dropped away as R (and m) approached 1. Taken together, the observations cannot be understood as resulting from the presence of cubic phase, per se. It has been concluded instead that they reflect the largely noncrystallographic deformation which characterizes superplasticity. As demonstrated in other recent work? a necessary condition for super-plasticity is strain-rate sensitivity of flow stress sufficiently high that m is above a lower limit of -0.3. The origin of large m has been traced, in turn, to grain size so small that a substantial amount of viscous deformation is introduced by such processes as Nabarro-Herring diffusional flow4 and/or grain boundary shear.5,6 Because of problems in the processing of titanium and zirconium alloys—problems of high strength, limited ductility, and excessive springback, originating largely in slip resistance-it was natural to wonder if something useful might be done with superplasticity in those materials. Therefore experiments were made for more closely identifying and generally bounding the phenomenon with temperature and strain-rate limits, before attempting to decide about its exploitation. The results are being reported here. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The two of primary interest were the titanium alloys of nominal composition (in wt pct) 5A1-2.5Sn and 6A1-4V. Others were a 4A1-1/4O2 titanium alloy, titanium of commercial purity (RC-70), Zircaloy-4. and Armco iron. All were received as annealed 3/16 in. thick sheet, except RC-70 which was & in. thick, and tested in that condition. Details of transformation temperature and grain size are given in Table I. The results of dilatometry for the measurement of transformation temperatures were unsatisfactory. Data were finally obtained by metallographic examination of each specimen after test, to determine from the amount of transformed 4 where the specimen had been heated in relation to the critical temperatures. A program has been conducted to determine the feasibility of providing a borehole liner for Kelly Bar drilled boreholes in Southern Florida. The concept was to drill the borehole with the Kelly Bar and with it still in the borehole insert a tube which would remain in the unstable ground after withdrawl of the bar. The tube then will provide an unobstructed borehole for the charging of explosives upon completion of the drilling the shot pattern.

Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

An acid-extraction procedure developed in Germany for determining mineral matter in coal was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine its application to American coals. It was found to be suitable for all ranks of coal from anthracite to lignite if modified slightly for coals containing considerable quantities of calcium compounds, such as calcite or calcium humate. The precision of the method is satisfactory, and the results are probably closer to the true content of mineral matter than those obtained by empirical formulas. The method requires considerably more analytical data than the Parr or approximation formulas but is no more time consuming than obtaining the necessary data for the King, Maries, and Crossley formula (theoretically the most comprehensive empirical formula used). An appendix to this report includes a detailed description of a recommended procedure.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. This extends to sample preparation too when reducing particle size and dividing the sample in the process.CITATION:Vogel, D A, 2017. "The Xstrata Nickel Raglan concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high-grade nickel ore, the plant’s current capacity is 1.3 million tonnes per year due to various optimization projects. In 2011 and 2012, the Metallurgical group, with assistance from BBA, updated and optimized the variables affecting SAG throughput in order to optimize process stability while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This project consisted of reviewing the control strategy and completely updating the pre-existing Fuzzy Logic controller. This paper describes the successful update of the controller including a complete revision of control rules, a new process control strategy and the integration of new process variables, most notably mill rotational speed. It will also show how this new approach has provided a simple and robust way of delivering both an increase in throughput while reducing process variability.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Mine concentrator is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. It has been in operation since 1997 and was originally designed to treat 800,000 tonnes of ore annually. The Raglan Agreement held with the Makivik Corporation and the Inuit communities limits the annual tonnage of ore that can be processed at 1.32 million tonnes.The ore is processed in a 24 foot variable speed, semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). The conversion from Autogenous Grinding (AG) to SAG was completed in 2006. Before the ore is processed by the SAG, its size is analyzed by a Wipfrag camera that provides a granulometry estimate. A cone crusher reduces the SAG’s discharge screen’s oversize material. A 14 foot diameter ball mill ensures final grinding before the flotation stage.Many control strategies were used at the SAG over the past few years. Fuzzy Logic was first used in 2007 in order to control tonnage feed to the SAG. This first version only measured the value of the variables without taking into account their rate of change. Revisions were made over the course of the last few years to improve controller performance. Other variables were added such as slurry density and crusher Closed Side Setting (CSS). The previous revision of the Fuzzy Logic was done in 2009 with a review of the rules only."

This camp is just now startled by the alarming suggestion that unless there shall speedily be an appreciation in the value of silver, and a decrease in the cost of salt, it will be prudent business policy to close the Alice mines and mills until the conditions of production are more favorable. Such an event would be a great blow to the prosperity of Butte. It would throw some hundreds of men out of employment, and it might lead to the adoption of the same policy by other companies, which, like the Alice, have not been able to pay dividends to their shareholders for a long time. The question arises, and becomes emphatic: If, under the present adverse conditions, the mines and mills cannot be made to pay a proper profit, why should they continue to be worked ? The owners mentally ask: Shall we go on exhausting our mines, pouring out a stream of silver for the maintenance of the community, and the support of the rail ways, or shall we husband our reserves, withdraw the miners from our slopes, and wait for more favorable conditions ? This is the impending question, and all concerned dread to meet and answer it. Let us briefly review the situation and forecast, if possible, what the solution of&apos; the problem will be. It must be understood that the discussion does not include, or refer to, the immense copper-producing interests of the camp, which may or may not be upon a very much more satisfactory basis. It will be confined chiefly to the operations of the Alice company, sta tistics of which are at hand, without involving the other silver com panies in the conclusions beyond those inevitable from well-known facts, patent to all. There are at present in Butte and in its vicinity in the principal mills an aggregate of 290 stamps dropping upon silver-ores: Alice,...........80 stamps.
