This publication reviews recent U.S. Bureau of Mines studies of frictional ignition of a methane-air environment by coal mining bits cutting into sandstone and the effectiveness of remedial techniques to reduce the likelihood of frictional ignition. Frictional ignition with a mining bit always involves a worn bit having a wear flat on the tip of the bit. The worn bit forms hot spots on the surface of the sandstone because of frictional abrasion. The hot spots then can ignite the methane-air environment. A small wear flat forms a small hot spot, which does not give ignition, while a large wear flat forms a large hot spot, which gives ignition. The likelihood of frictional ignition can be somewhat reduced by using a mushroom-shaped tungsten-carbide bit tip on the mining bit and by increasing the bit clearance angle; it can be significantly reduced by using a water spray nozzle in back of each bit, which is carefully oriented to direct the water spray onto the sandstone surface directly behind the bit and thereby cool the hot spots formed by the worn bit. A bit replacement schedule must be used to avoid the formation of a dangerously worn bit.

Modern underground coal mines can be very large, having a total connected load in excess of l5 000 hp. These mines generally have many miles of high-power conveyor belts and 15 or more miles of high-voltage power cables at distribution voltages of 12.47, 13.2, 13.8, or 14.4 kV. The shielded cables used in mine power distribution systems have a significant level of capacitance, on the order of 110 pF/ft. This level of capacitance, in an extensive power distribution system at today's voltage levels, can cause significant charging currents during a ground fault. This paper addresses the potential detrimental effects of capacitance charging currents during line-to-ground faults in mine power distribution systems. A representative mine power system is modeled, and simulations with faults at various locations are conducted to evaluate the effects of this capacitance on the level of fault current and relay selectivity. This paper also includes results of capacitance measurements made on mine power feeder cables used to validate the simulation model.

Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Recent chemical and petrological studies of the banded aplites at The Pinnacles and Big Hill by Vernon (19B1) confirmed their similarity, but indicated an origin by metasomatic replacement of pre-existing folded and metamorphosed rocks. O processo de micro soldagem se mostra eficiente para a união de Ligas com Memória de Forma (LMF) do sistema NiTi devido a alta precisão e localização do calor, diminuindo os tamanhos da zona fundida (ZF) e da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA), promovendo melhorias nas propriedades mecânicas destes tipos de juntas. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral determinar as variações das propriedades termomecânicas em juntas soldadas de fios de NiTi. Para o trabalho, fios superelásticos de uma LMF NiTi (ASTM F2063) com 0,9 mm de diâmetro, foram divididos em dois grupos: (a) fios sem tratamento térmico (NiTiA) e (b) fios com tratamento térmico a 400°C durante 20 minutos (NiTi400). Em seguida estes fios foram soldados pelo processo TIG, utilizando a microsoldadora Micromelt (EDG Equipamentos e Controles). A caracterização termomecânica dos fios íntegros e microsoldados foi realizada utilizando ensaios de calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC), análise dinâmico-mecânica (DMA), ensaios de tração uniaxial, microscopia óptica (MO), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microindentação Vickers. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do processo TIG ao soldar os fios NiTi de ambos os grupos. As juntas soldadas apresentaram propriedades de superelasticidade semelhante aos fios íntegros e a análise da fratura dos fios com solda mostra características dúcteis.

Flotation schemes for the separation of molybdenite from other minerals are based on utilizing the Inherent hydrophobicity of molygdenite (Fuerstenau1). This natural floatability was attributed to the crystalline structure of molybdenite by Gaudin et al.2 who suggested that any surface formed by the rupture of van der Wall's bonds should be hydrophobic and, therefore, naturally floatable. Other authors argued that "natural floatability" is dependent of adsorption of hydrocarbon ions and/or molecu1es on the surface of the minerals. This theory, albeit-c questioned 1,2 has long been recognized in actual practice of molybdenite flotation as the latter in carried out with hydrocarbons, such as fuel oil, kerosene and stove oil. Although conferring ready floatability to molybdenite, these presents generally have little effect on other sulphides and silicates. However, talc is a noteworthy exception because of its innate floatability4. Not withstanding the reason for this behavior which has also been attributed to crystal structure2 its end results as in the case of molybdenite is an immediate flotation response to frothing oils arid kerosene, as was observed by Baranovski5, Sutherland and Wark6.

The Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District has historically had the greatest mining and exploration activity within the district. Between 1880 and 1983, the mines within the Juneau Gold Belt produced 6.7 MM oz gold, 3.1 MM oz silver, and 45 MM lbs lead, which had a total value of about $157,000,000 at the time of production. This report summarizes Bureau of Mines work completed in 1986, the second year of the Juneau Mining District study. Fifty mines, prospects, and occurrences were examined and 638 samples were collected for analysis during 1986. Metallurgical samples were collected from seven deposits and preliminary tests of cyanide amenability have been completed for five of these. The simultaneous discovery by private industry and the Bureau of gold-bearing quartz veins cutting diorite gneiss recently exposed by the retreat of the Herbert Glacier is the most notable result of work during 1986. This location yielded gold values up to 7 oz/st.

This is the final report of work done under contract H0210060 for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program was to show the feasibility of using plastic liners containing sand and other fillers as a means of roof support in coal and other mines. This laboratory study was conducted in two phases, namely: Phase I, directed toward determining which state-of-the-art resin systems might have utility as a means of roof support in a coal mine, consisted of a canvass of resin manufacturers to learn which resins were available commercially that might have utility for this application. The resins submitted by the manufacturers were evaluated in a number of simple tests to define which of them would be most suitable for roof support use.

A statistical study of machinability led the writer to examine existing data in regard to a thermal conductivity-mechanical properties relationship. Various functional relationships were proposed and the multiple correlation determined by statistical methods discussed in detail in the 1iterature.4 The relationship having the greatest engineering and statistical significance is discussed below. The data for cast and wrought aluminum alloys''2 have been compiled and analyzed separately. The results of these analyses are presented in Table I. The empirical equations for estimating the thermal conductivity (cal sec-' cm-I °C) are: for cast aluminum alloys K = 0.584 -0.00984/ -0.00263 Hb [1] and for wrought aluminum alloys K = 0.604 -0.00424l- 0.00170 Hb [2] where 1 and Hb are the percentage elongation and Brinell hardness number. Results of a similar analysis pertaining to stainless steel3 are also given in Table I. This empirical equation for estimating thermal conductivity (Btu per sq ft per hr per °F per in.) is K = 216.19- 1.716l - 0.0997 Hb [3] The relationship between electrical resistivity and mechanical properties was also examined for aluminum alloys using the same statistical method. The following pages discuss the objectives, the background, and scope of work of an industrial engineering analysis of far-,n haulage systems in underground retreat coal mining. This study ran concurrently with an existing industrial engineering study of methods of improving safety and production efficiency in underground pillar extraction. 1. OBJECTIVES The objective of this project was to provide basic data inputs that will inpart knowledge as to the major constraint to pillar extraction sections. Furthermore, the industrial engineering study will suggest ways to optimize haulage systems and to develop more efficient work practices and operational techniques that will maximize equipment utilization.

IN 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KC1) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H20). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY OF DEPOSITS The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado Rivera distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 2o E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 2o E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. Avmin have developed a flowsheet for the refining of copper, nickel and cobalt from Nkomati concentrates. Cobalt is recovered from calcium-saturated solution using Cyanex® 272. Nickel is subsequently extracted using versatic acid. The loaded organic is stripped using spent electrolyte, producing advance electrolyte for recovery of nickel by electrowinning. Cobalt was recovered with >99.5% extraction efficiency, reducing cobalt from 1.8 g/l to <10 mg/l. The cobalt/nickel ratio in the cobalt product solution was >1500. Nickel solvent extraction was optimized to recover 99%, reducing the nickel concentration from 32 g/l to <0.3 g/l, while minimizing calcium deportment to the nickel electrowinning circuit.

INTRODUCTION Statistical analysis of results obtained by workers survey is very often limited to the determination of the collective dose and mean annual values. This information is not sufficent by itself for radiation protection purposes since the cumulative exposure of a worker during his working life is not taken into account. A more complete analysis would be obtained by considering both: [ ] These two notions are different. The former depends on the evolution of the protection with time and is related to annual limits (ICRP, 1977 and ICRP,1977 a). The second depends mainly on the works performed during the period of survey, the interference of protection evolution is weakened. So it is useful to foresee how the individual average annual doses would be when considering survey periods of 5, 10 years, or more. STUDIED POPULATION In order to analyse the two previously mentionned notions it is necessary to follow up a well defined population of workers which is continuously exposed to the radiological hazards on a long enough period. The selected population is that of the workers of the French uranium mines always present during the 1971-1979 period (9 years). The number of individuals is 937. The radiological hazards are: 1. exposure to radon and short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation. The workers of the uranium mines are exposed to these radiological risks in different ways according to the work performed. It is therefore necessary to subdivide the population into more homogeneous groups with respect to the radiological risks. Three groups are considered: - Group 1 : 227 individuals whose radon and dust exposures are always nil - Group 2 : 449 individuals whose radon and (or) dust exposures are different from 0 every year - Group 3 : 261 individuals represent a mixed category. Some features of these groups are given in table 1. [ ] The 937 followed individuals represent approximatively the half of the whole population of the French uranium mines. Taking into account the procedure adopted to select the studied population, it appears clearly that this population is not representative of the whole miner population. DOSIMETRIC RECORDS Three risk indicators are considered .Individual annual exposures to radon and its shortlived daughters. They are determined by ambient monitoring based on radon concentration measurements and recording of the times elapsed in the various workplaces. For each worker the annual exposure is represented by the mean annual air concentration and is expressed as a fraction of the maximum annual concentration (MAC). Given the administrative arrangements and the effective state of equilibrium between radon and its daughters, the maximum annual concentration is practically equivalent to 1 Working Level = 2.08 x 10- 5 jm-3. (UNSCEAR, 1977). . Individual annual exposures to long-lived ore dust which are also expressed in fraction of the maximum annual concentration. . Individual annual doses of external irradiation (X and [y] rays) expressed in mSv (= 10-3 Sievert). Irradiation monitoring is based on use of individual film badges.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by the natural topography of an open-pit mine. Due to such inversions, the air quality in open-pit mines deteriorates very rapidly. Transport of gaseous pollutants under arctic air inversion is complex and involves an interaction between flow, thermal and convective transport systems. This paper discusses the construction and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the effect of low influent velocity and large gust velocities on the contaminants profiles in the mine. It was found that while higher velocities may remove contaminants from the pit bottom, they may not remove the contaminants from the pit entirely, necessitating artificial mitigation measures.

This research program was a theoretical and experimental study to improve understanding of the mechanisms of flame extinguishment in methane-coal dust-air-suppressant mixtures. This final report is a summary of work conducted during this grant, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. Work under this new grant closely followed a recently completed contract for the Bureau of Mines that was conducted at this laboratory, and results of the earlier contract are also summarized in this report, as required in the grant work statement. The experimental effort was concentrated on supplementing the limited data available to describe laminar flames in methane-coal-air-suppressant mixtures. The theoretical effort was devoted to developing a comprehensive model that could be used to explain and extrapolate the experimental data. Selected for study were the following flames: Methane-air; methane-air plus KHCO , KNO3, K C204, KBr, Al203 or Monnex; methane-coal dust-air; coal dust-air with size, volatiles content, and concentration as variables, and coal dust-air plus KHCO3, KN03, KBr, NaCl or CaC03.
