The resistivity us atom fraction relationships for dilute solutions of cadmium, mercury, and tin in molten sodium have been determined. With these data and the resistivity capillary-reservoir technique, the electro-transport mobilities, effective valences, and the diflusion coefficients of the three solutes have been determined. The mobilities are found to be higher than in other molten alloys by a factor of around 20. The results are compared to the Mmgelsdorf model for electrotrmtsport. The high values found for the mobility to diffusion coefficient ratio indicate that small quantities of the alkali metals should be susceptible to purification from many solutes by means of electrotransport. PASSAGE of a direct electric current through a liquid metal containing a solute will usually cause a relative motion between the solute and solvent atoms of the alloy. This electrotransport phenomenon may be described experimentally in terms of the mobility of the solute atoms, i.e., the drift velocity of the solute relative to the solvent per unit electric field. In dilute solutions of liquid alloys this relative mobility becomes a measure of the velocity of the solute with respect to the observer since the motion of the solvent is negligible. The mobility is a significant parameter in evaluating the potential usefulness of electrotransport for such things as purification or solute control upon solidification. Prior to around 1958, quantitative data for the mobility of solutes in liquid metals were restricted to some solutes in liquid mercury. Since that time ad- ditional data have been reported for the mobility of solutes in liquid mercury, bismuth, tin, and lead, as shown in Table I. In 1963 Drakin et al.11 reported some values of a transport number for mercury and thallium in molten sodium and potassium. When these values were converted to mobilities, it was found that the mobilities were higher than any of the previously reported values by a factor of around 20, as shown in Table I. Drakin's experimental technique did not eliminate the presence of back-diffusion and consequently his data were expected to be lower than the true values. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the mobility of a number of solutes in molten sodium with an experimental technique which eliminates back-diffusion errors. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used to determine the mobility was a resistivity capillary-reservoir technique which had previously been used with a high degree of precision on Sn-Bi alloys.4 This technique consists of dipping the vertical Pyrex capillary cell shown in Fig. 1 into a molten bath of alloy while the bath and capillary are under vacuum. THE graphic methods and records described in this article have been developed, with satisfactory results, for the use of executives of the Chino Copper Co., in Hurley, N. Mex. Particular attention is directed to the use of large wall-charts, the quick reference display of large charts, the scale notation of metallurgical charts, the inclusion of mesh extraction on screen analysis diagrams. To properly comprehend the operation and metallurgical results from a concentrating plant, a daily record of essential data is kept, usually involving the dry weight of ore milled or treated, dry weight of concentrate or metal produced, assay values of heading, assay values of tailing, assay values of concentrate, and percentage of extraction or recovery. In addition it is often necessary to record moisture, pulp density, or dilution; percentage of weight of oils and reagents employed; screen analyses of grinding conditions, oversize, etc.; assay values of non-valuable or interfering substances; cost data; and such special information as may be required.

Emulsions have long occupied an important position in many industries. In the petroleum industry, where enhanced oil recovery techniques such as steam stimulation, flooding, etc. are being increasingly practiced, emulsions are very frequently produced. Characterization of these emulsions are an important prerequisite for monitoring and evaluation of the recovery processes. Emulsion properties will also determine the type of treatment required to separate and recover the oil phase. A variety of laboratory, pilot-scale and field-generated emulsions were characterized. Coulter technique results for size analysis are compared with microscopy (image analysis) and laser light scattering methods; Coulter determined oil contents are compared with gravimetric and volumetric methods of analysis.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. The upper part of the series consists mostly of gray or green schists but includes a few lenticular beds of jasper and a banded iron formation con-

The investigation presented in this paper was performd to develop a relationship between the dewpoint pressure of a hydrocarbon reservoir fluid and its composition, temperature and characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction. This is part of an over-all program to develop correlations for the essential properties of reservoir fluids with the composition, temperature and pressure. In all, 579 dewpoint pressures, determined experimentally on 480 different condensate systems along with their compositions and temperatures, were obtained from the literature and from previously unpublished sources. Compositions were expressed in terms of mol fractions of methane through heptanes-plus, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, and the molecular weight and specific gravity of the heptanes-plus fraction. Distribution of the samples assured a good representation of most of the major oil-producing areas in the world. A multiple regression analysis program written for the IBhl 7094 digital computer was used to compare numerous equations and to calculate their coefficients. The final equation containing 11 coefficients resulted in an average absolute deviation of 7.4 percent for all the samples. Segregation of data on the basis of one or more variables did not materially improve the results. The correlation developed is useful in predicting the dewpoint pressure of condensate reservoir fluids from variables normally measured in the laboratory. INTRODUCTION In any discussion of the dewpoint of hydrocarbon mixtures, it should be noted that there are two kinds of dewpoints which must be distinguished. The first type, or normal dewpoint, usually occurs at low pressures as dry gas is compressed to the point where liquid first forms. The second type, sometimes called the retrograde dewpoint, occurs when a gas mixture containing heavy hydrocarbons in solution is depressured until a liquid is formed. The first type, as applied to condensate mixtures, would normally be below atmospheric pressure and would be of no interest in reservoir performance. The second type is of great significance in interpreting reservoir behavior and is the property referred to throughout this paper. Laboratory measurement of dewpoints is laborious, expensive and subject to many errors, and it is desirable to find a reasonably accurate method to predict dewpoint pressures from the composition and other readily available properties normally measured on the fluids. A possible method of calculating dewpoint pressures would be to employ a set of equilibrium ratios (K-values). 1 However, the K-values themselves depend on composition as well as temperature and pressure; presently their use adds nothing to the accuracy of predicting dewpoints. If future correlations provide a significantly better method of estimating K-values for heavy hydrocarbons, they may be of greater use. REVIEW OF LITERATURE In 1944, Olds, Sage and Lacey 2 studied the behavior of fluids from the Paloma field. Properties of seven mixtures were studied at temperatures ranging from 100 to 250 F and at pressures up to 5,000 psia. From the information obtained, the influence of composition and temperature upon the dewpoint was determined. It was found that removal of the intermediate molecular weight components from the mixture resulted in considerable increases in the dewpoint pressures. Results indicated that the effect of changes in temperature was relatively minor when compared with the effect of modifying the mixture by removing the intermediate components. Thus, removal of propane and butanes resulted in an increase in dewpoint pressure more than 10 times greater than a change in temperature from 100 to 250 F. The authors stated that althouah

The mines of The Tennessee Copper Co. are in the Ducktown Basin, in southeastern Tennessee. The ore is a heavy sulphide consisting principally of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and in places running as high as 95 per cent sulphur and iron. Operating mines are the Burra Burra and Eureka. Development ' of the Boyd ore body was started in 1940. Late in 1939 the decision was made to change from fuse and cap to all electric blasting and at the same time electric cap lamps were installed to replace carbide. These changes were made to improve the safety and working conditions in the mines. Both the Bureau of Mines and explosives manufacturers recommended electric blasting as a safety measure. Until that rime, electric blasting had been used only for shaft sinking and in places where it was absolutely essential for safety. Very few men had had experience in this type of blasting, as the places where it was required were those that also required direct supervision. It was necessary for the mining staff to work out methods, procedure, and equipment to be used. In this they were ably assisted by representatives of the explosives manufacturers. Many mistakes were made and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the original plan and installation, show the major difficulties encountered. the remedies applied, and present the practices now being followed. Comparison of costs of the two methods will also be discussed. About six months were required to make the change and eliminate fuse and cap blasting entirely. The first electric blasting stations were installed in November 1939 and the last fuse was taken underground in May 1940. A very unusual condition forced the use of fuse for a short time in one heading after May, but that will be discussed later. Original Equipment and Installation A power line is generally recommended as a source of current where permanent blasting stations are used. The plan worked out for electric blasting was to tap 220-volt alternating-current lines when they were available and use 250-volt direct current from the trolley wire at all other places. A blasting machine would be available at each shaft for places where there were no regular blasting stations and could be used if a regular station should fail. The equipment decided on was No. 16 duplex reinforced lamp cord for lines to within about 50 ft. of the working place and No. 20 lead wire from that point to the shots. An open double-pole, double-throw switch with slate base was put in the circuit, so connected that the down position would close the line to the shots 2nd the up position would connect it to the Iine from the power contactor. This switch was located in the circuit as close to the blast as was safe (should the shots explode when it was placed in the shooting

This paper describes a metallographic investigation of the influence of tungsten or molybdenum additions upon the transformation and precipitation reactions occurring in Co-rich Co-Cr alloys. It is shown that tungsten has little effect upon the a-ß transformation temperature range, while molybdenum tends to raise it. Both elements tend to promote the formation of ? phase, molybdenum being more potent in this respect than tungsten. HIGH temperature alloys, that is, alloys which have load-carrying ability at elevated temperatures, have been developed at an increasing rate during the past few years. This has resulted from the requirements in the design of modern aircraft engines. Although many alloys of this type are available, they have been developed on an empirical basis. Metallurgists do not have a clear understanding of the phases or structures that are responsible for these high temperature properties. In order to determine why these alloys possess this particular ability, a project was started at Battelle Memorial Institute with the object of learning more about the fundamental factors which promote high temperature strength in alloys. This study was to include a correlation of microstructure and the high temperature properties of Vitallium, an alloy which is widely used for high temperature service. Vitallium is a complex material both from the standpoint of composition and microstructure. Consequently, it was necessary to obtain informa- tion regarding the phase relationships in this alloy. The Co-Cr binary diagram was determined as the first phase of this investigation.' A second paper described the effects of iron, nickel, or nitrogen on the reactions occurring in the Co-rich end of this system.' The present paper covers a continuation of this investigation in which the effects of tungsten or molybdenum on the reactions occurring in Co-rich, Co-Cr-base alloys were determined. Preparation of 'rest Materials Two series of ternary Co-Cr-base alloys, representing Co-Cr ratios of 80:20 and 68:32 ( Cr x 100 =20 and 32 ) , were prepared containing ( Co + Cr = up to 6 pct W and up to 12 pct Mo. Melting stock consisted of electrolytic Co, electrolytic Cr, 99.9 pct pure W, and 99.9 pct pure Mo. Table I lists the chemical analyses of these materials. (written discussion).¬When ;we regard the number of British thermal units running into the billions that-must be applied to metallurgical slags in the United States, we cannot but conclude that the physical chemistry of-slags is a very important subject when measured in dollars and cents. A further contemplation of the subject shows us that it has been hitherto treated in too purely a practical manner. It is needless to comment at length on the cost of these heat units and on the cost of fluxes to produce these metallurgical slags, for, it amounts to tens of millions of dollars annually. Accordingly, this research is of value to the country. But we must,all balance our results against our efforts. Therefore, while the speaker is unwilling to criticise unduly this meritorious research, lie does criticise it in the interest of the profession for the reason that it seems to him too highly theoretical. The article is much too, scientific to produce results at a minimum cost. Let us explain our meaning. It has been said that there are always two sides to a question. It may be further said that there are always three sides to a question, the two extremes and the middle ground. In any industrial research there are the highly theoretical side, the purely practical side, and the theoretico-practical side. To study a slag and be practical in the studying, there is something needed that represents in the laboratory (or in microcosm) what actually happens macrocosmically in the blast furnace. There is such a thing as the art of metallurgical research occupying the middle ground between theory and practice.

The importation of liquid fuels in Brazil amounts to about 1,300,000 tons; 30 per cent of this total being gasoline for automobiles and airplanes. Statistics show an increasing consumption of gasoline notwithstanding the use, daily greater, of fuel alcohol, a domestic fuel of low cost in the producing areas. The Brazilian market for petroleum products has shown a tendency to grow as the country has steadily developed— expansion of the industries in the areas already developed, and also the recent occupation and population of new zones. The war has brought many difficulties to Brazil. It has limited the importation of petroleum products, which came mostly from the United States, Venezuela and Mexico. During the first days of the present crisis automobile and truck traffic was vastly curtailed; but the national activity in the production of more fuel alcohol, and principally in the development of producer gas, has done much to provide a solution for the transportation crisis threatened at the beginning of the gasoline shortage. Many thousands of cars and trucks in Brazil are now burning producer gas made from charcoal. Producer gas for automobiles has been improved by Brazilian engineers and many new types have appeared. - Production There is only one producing oil field in Brazil—the one in the State of Baia, near the Baia de Todos os Santos. The first producing oil well was drilled in Lobato in 1939 by the Federal Government following studies carried on in that area by Oscar Cordeiro, S. Froes Abreu, G. Paiva and J. Amarai. The field and laboratory work done by these men was published in 1936 in a paper entitled " ContribuicBes para a Geologiado Petroleo no Reconcavo (Baia)," which indicated the potentialities of the area as an oil producer. After the discovery of the first producing well, the Brazilian Government issued a decree establishing an area, 60 km. in radius, as a National Reservation. This first well was drilled in Lobato. In no other locality in Brazil is any petroleum produced. Although many wells have been drilled in the southern part of Brazil, on the northeastern coast and in the Amazon Basin, they yield nothing. Actual production is below 1000 bbl. daily. The producing area covers Itaparica Island, Candeias and Arath, Joanes Island and Lobato. Since very little geological information was available, especially about subsurface structure, it was necessary to drill several wildcats in order to collect the data essential in the choosing of good locations. The United Geophysical Co. was contracted to perform a geophysical survey to clear up the major problems concerning the oil deposits in the Reconcavo beds. The best wells in Reconcavo are on Itaparica Island, where the daily flow amounts to about zoo bbl.; in other sectors production is considerably lower and most of the wells are pumping. In the Aratfi sector, near an area of very light oil, there is an important gas field, with wells producing about I0,000,000 cu. ft. daily.

When an oil operator becomes a party to a proration agreement he may wonder, with good cause, whether production prorated .today is merely deferred until tomorrow or whether oil might be lost. Various types of evidence obtained from production records when studied quantitatively are of great assistance in arriving at definite conclusions. A study of individual examples cited in this paper leads towards some solution of the problem, particularly when they are considered in the aggregate. Many production curves on various pay horizons were studied. A disappointingly large number of these were of contributory value, but inconclusive. However, there were enough curves of similar type from the Wilcox sand at Earlsboro, Bowlegs, Seminole City, the Cromwell horizon at Little River, and the Simpson dolomite at Valley Center, Kansas, from which reasonably definite conclusions were drawn. Assuming that deferred production is later made up with no increase in ultimate recovery, a curve (Fig. 1) shows the normal flowing and pumping life of a composite well, contructed by the family curve method. The initial production of the well shown is 1700 bbl. daily and the allowed production is 25 per cent. On this basis the average daily allowed rate for the first month is 425 bb1., or the area BCDE, which is equivalent to the area AFDG under the normal decline curve. The potential production for the second month is 1500 bbl. and the allowed production 375 bbl. daily. By this procedure a potential curve for each succeeding month is obtained (points A, H, I, J and K). If the well is opened it should produce somewhere near its potential curve for a short period and then decline at a more rapid rate than the potential curve. This theoretical analysis is basic. Actual examples exhibiting all points raised by the ideal curve are rare. An investigation of the Cr-Mo-Ni ternary system and attendant binaries has been completed. Some changes in the binary diagrams are shown to be necessary. The 1250°C section of the ternary and the liquidus surface have been delineated. A system of invariant reactions existing above 1250°C has been suggested. BECAUSE chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are important not only as bases for alloying systems but also as major alloying additions for other refractory metals, a study of the phase diagrams is of great interest and importance. In addition there are interesting features of theoretical value, a number of which are of prime consideration in this work. The major aim was to determine the ternary phase diagram of these metals at and above 1250°C, with sufficient attention given to lower temperatures to permit an understanding of the conditions existing at 1250°C and above. To understand ternary systems it is essential that accurate information concerning the binary systems be available, which in turn presupposes thorough knowledge of the constituent elements. On the basis of this investigation not only were significant inaccuracies indicated in the binary systems but much consideration had to be given to one of the elements, that is, chromium. The observation has been made that chromium undergoes a crystal transformation at a temperature near its melting point. Much of the experimental data leading to the detection of this transformation and the effects of this hypothesis on the form of the Cr-Ni phase diagram have already been reported' . and will not be repeated here. The experimental methods employed in the investigation have also been covered.'-" he purity of the molybdenum utilized in this work showed by qualitative spectrographic analysis that chromium, copper, iron, silicon, and tungsten were present in quantities of 0.1 to 0.001 wt pct. During the course of the investigation more than 100 melts were made, weighing from 150 to 200 grams each. Each of these melts was sectioned for chemical analysis and for specimens for examination in the as-cast and various heat-treated conditions by X-ray and metallographic means. All X-ray diffraction patterns reproduced here were made using chromium Ka radiation although iron and copper targets were used on occasions during the investigation. Experimental Results Mo-Ni-System: The most recent comprehensive investigation of the Mo-Ni system was made by Ellinger' in 1942; the diagram as shown in the American Society for Metals Handbook is based on his work. The work done on the system in this investigation substantiated the general form of the diagram although some differences were observed. These are indicated by a comparison of Ellinger's diagram and Fig. 1, the latter showing the results of pertinent thermal analyses made in this research. Y.:—Do I understand correctly that the rolls are at first simple cylinders, one longer than the other, and that flanges are subsequently formed on the longer roll as the result of wear only ? Mr. Payne :—The flanges are formed by the wearing of the shorter roll into the other, which is about an inch longer. When the roll-shells are new, the longer one has machined at each end a ridge about 1/8 in. or 0.25 in. higher than the face. These slight projections help to center and steady the rolls, by locating the flanges in advance. Possibly they might be left off at the start; but Mr. Frazee has found it better, in machining the new roll-shells, to turn such small flanges upon the longer one. In his practice the feed-stream is extended a short distance beyond the two ends of the shorter roll-shell. This allows a small amount of crushing to be done between the flange-ftices and the vertical ends of the shorter roll-shell, which prevents any ridges from forming at the ends of the shorter roll-shell.

The Meadow River No. 1 preparation plant, owned by Sewell Coal Co. which is a subsidiary of the Pittston Co., was commissioned in the spring of 1974. A survey of the environmental noise levels was conducted, and the dominant noise sources identified. An engineering program was initiated to reduce the prevailing levels to a point that the operator's exposure would be within compliance with the MESA regulation for ear protection. The program was continued until compliance was achieved and the attenuation factors for each abatement device recorded. The highlights of this program will be presented with a discussion of the practicality of the devices utilized.

In the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals arc blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper. The Surface Mining Act of 1977 required a study by the National Academy of Sciences regarding the special mine reclamation requirements of Alaska. The status of mines operating and planned in Alaska will be presented. New mines opening in Alaska must establish a baseline inventory of plants and animals in the mine site area as well as determine pre-mining air and water quality. Current work in these areas will be summarized. Reclamation practices in Alaska and other Arctic countries as practiced currently will be described. A summary of current research in Alaska dealing with revegetation on surface mined lanais, re-establishment of animal populations, and water treatment processes necessary in this pristine environment will be discussed. Included will be future predictions of the direction of mine reclamation in Alaska as more mines enter the industry.
