Pearson (British Iron and Steel Research Association, London, England)—Dr. Wagner has referred to the work of Richardson and Dancy and Gellner and Richardson on the reduction at 900°C of wustite films on iron. He has assumed that iron ions and electrons migrate backwards to the iron-wustite interface and that the reduced iron grows on the metal substrate. This would be a possible explanation of the results of these workers were it not for the fact that, as stated by Gellner and Richardson but not stressed, this growth in the center of the specimen can occur even

The sum of $250 was appropriated to the Chicago Section. The President was authorized to appoint five members of the Board of Directors, including himself as Chairman, to discuss with other technical societies the proper organization for handling all matters of joint interest to the profession of engineering as distinct from purely technical activities, and to submit its findings in the form of recommendations to the Board of-Directors. Charles F. Rand was appointed a Trustee of the United Engineering Society to succeed himself. John H. Janeway was elected a member of the Library Board, vice Karl Eilers, resigned. Alexander C. Humphreys was elected a member of the Library Board to succeed himself.

The solution used in the following method for phosphorns-determination is the filtrate obtained in the nitric and sulphuric acid method for the determination of silicon (Transactions, vii., 346). This filtrate, being easily and quickly obtained, and always quite free from silica, is a desirable one for phosphorus-precipitation. Consolidation Coal Co. is solving the abrasion problem and cutting maintenance costs at its Georgetown preparation plant by using ceramic alumina tiles from The Carborundum Co. The Georgetown complex handles the output of four deep mines and three strip mines in the Cadiz, Ohio, area-washing about 73 000 tons (80,000 st) weekly. Plant superintendent Duke Zinko is using wear-resistant Dura-frax® tiles in several applications, replacing wear plates, profile rubber, and other materials he has tried over the years.

As a service to its readers, MINING ENGINEERING is publishing the mineral industry portion of the 1957 list of Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in the United States. This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers. ECPD is merely authorized by its constituent organizations to publish a list of accredited engineering curricula for use as desired by those agencies which require such a list. It has no authority to impose any restrictions or standardizations on schools. (Date following school refers to year of initial accrediting.)

The scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given' of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores.

The petition for the formation of a Tulsa Section was granted. The final budget for the year 1917, and the tentative budget for the year 1918, were adopted. The Secretary was instructed to continue to send the Bulletin to all members whose dues have been remitted on account of their being in the war service, but to hold the Transactions and send them on request to the address furnished for the purpose. The issues of the Bulletin were presented to the Federal Fuel Administration, at its request, with the compliments of the Institute. Fifty-nine Members, five Associates, and fifteen Junior Members were elected. The resignation of one member was accepted. The clues of four members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. An extension of time for the payment of clues was granted to four members, upon request.

The typical block coal of the Brazil (Indiana) District differs in chemical composition but little from the coking coals of Western Pennsylvania. The physical difference, however, is quite marked; the latter has a cuboid structure made up of bituminous particles lying against each other, so that under the action of heat fusion throughout the mass readily takes place, while block coal is formed of alternate layers of rich bituminous matter and a charcoal-like substance, which is not only very slow of combustion, but so retards the transmission of heat that agglutination is prevented, and the coal burns away layer by layer, retaining its form until consumed. A three day international mining convention was held At the city hall of Nelson, B. C., June 19-21. It was held under the auspices of the Nelson-Slocan and British Columbia Mining Men's Club, the Northwest Mining Association of Spokane, the Kootenay Mine Owners' Association, assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver, Chamber of Mines, the City of Nelson, the Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and the Nelson Board of Trade. The technical program was in charge of Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and Western Branch and Kootenay-Boundary Branch, The Canadian Mining Institute. The first day was given over to the judging of mining exhibits and manufacturer's displays; the organization of a branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, and the reception of visitors from Spokane. On Friday afternoon a joint session of the Canadian Mining Institute and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held.

AS in former years, Pechelbronn, in Alsace, was the most important producer in 1936, with 484,453 bbl., of which 283,151 from drilling and 201,302 from mining showed a slight increase in comparison with the preceding year. Gabian, in France and Tliouanet, in Algeria, are nearly exhausted. At Gabian, four wells drilled in intermittent exploitation produced during the year 2893 bbl. Four wildcats, one of which is producing, constituted all the activity in research on French territory. In Morocco, some wildcats have been drilled in search for new fields and exploratory drilling has been done in Tselfat and in Djebel Bou Draa in known fields, but the results have been inconsiderable. In Tunisia there was a gas outburst in Kebir 1, which is the first practical result obtained. In Madagascar, the Andrafiavelo region has been left and a new region has been tried in Folakara with the Tsimororo. In French Equatorial Africa, one drilling is in progress.

Some statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. * In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted.

It is well to understand at once that converter gas is always mixed with copper blast-furnace gas at Copperhill before entering the Glover tower, and, at times, roaster gas is also added along with the converter and blast-furnace gas. Fig. 1 is introduced to show the variations in the sulfur dioxide content of the gas and the ability of the acid-plant operator to control the variations, resulting in a very even grade at the Gay-Lussac tower entrance. The sulfur dioxide content of the gas entering the Gay-Lussac tower must be low and regular to assure low niter consumption. The blast-furnace gas alone is rather uniform as regards sulfur dioxide content and the variations, as shown in Fig. 1, are chiefly caused by converter changes—out for charging, slag pouring, copper pouring, and, of course, the "finish." The combined gas during the converter finish is, at times, almost free of oxygen and the sulfur dioxide content reaches 13.0 per cent. At such times air is added at the Glover tower.

A good mining engineer is supposed to make a good mine. What then makes a good mining engineer? There certainly are a lot of answers to that question. The answers depend on whether you are one, work for one, or employ one. There are several cliches about mining engineers, and there is some truth in them-as there usually is in any stereotype. Hollywood chose Jeff Chandler to portray a mining engineer in Foxfire. The image here was of an almost one-man mining operation. When Chandler picked up a jackhammer, cradled it in his gut and started drilling out a tunnel round, it gave one the hives. I would have liked to see him finish just one round that way. There are limits to what even the most hairy-chested of us will try. We can assume that Hollywood feels it needs to over- draw any profession to add impact.

Bosqui, has completely revised the book. Its comprehensive picture of ore dressing and hydrometallurgical methods are of importance to mining engineers and operators throughout the entire field. Operating data and methods, flowsheets, testing procedures, and many miscellaneous methods of extracting bullion are given. The book is divided into two sections, the first discussing principal unit processes involved in gold and silver recovery, and the second describing with flow diagrams a number of typical treatment plants selected from the more important gold and silver mining areas in various parts of the world. International Conference on Coal Preparation in Paris. English Language edition of transactions.-The transactions of the recent conference in Paris will be presented in the form of 6 issues of the revue de l'Industrie Minerale, and may be purchased for 3000 francs per set.
