The South Works high-tonnage billet caster was started in late March 1971, with the first heat being successfully cast to completion. Currently, over 31,500 tons per month are being produced. U. S. Steel designed and built this caster with the objective of producing quality-steel billets for critical bar, rod, and wire applications. The essential design parameters were based on studies conducted on the Research Laboratory's pilot caster, also located at South works. 1,2,3)* The caster is a four-strand, straight-mold machine that produces 7.5-inch- square billets at rates exceeding 300 tons per hour. An in-line-reduction mill reduces each strand to either 6-inch-, 5-inch-, or 4-inch-square billets.

The secondary re crystallization behavior of two vacuum-melted, nominally 3 pct Si-Fe alloys has been studied, one alloy being produced from pure electrolytic iron and semiconductor-grade silicon and the other from commercial-purity hot band. The vacuum-melted and vacuum-remelted alloys were found to develop {110}(hhl) and {lll)(hkl), respectively, on annealing in high vacuum and {100}(0kl) and {11l}(hkl), respectively on annealing in pure hydrogen of dew point, < — 60°C. H2S doping of the hydrogen or annealing in commercial argon was found to effect a reversal for the vacuum-remelted alloy from (111) to (100) secondary recrys-tallization, while prolonged vacuum annealing at 2 x 10-6 Tow resulted in a tertiary re crystallization from (111} to (110). The growth selection of the {lll}(hkl) component was found to be governed predominantly by the {111}/planar misorientation, the maximum deviation of the resulting secondaries being 5 deg. It is considered that the driving force for {111}(hkl) secondary recrystallization arises from the preferential lowering of ?111, possibly by phosphorus or nitrogen diffusion, just as oxygen and sulfur under certain conditions have been found to preferentially lower ?100. When heavily cold-rolled metals are annealed at high temperatures, primary recrystallization usually occurs rapidly and may be followed by considerable grain growth. However, in the presence of a fine dispersion of inclusions1"3 or with a strong matrix preferred orientation4&apos;&apos; the matrix may be stabilized and a secondary recrystallization may then be effected. Also, in vacuum-melted Si-Fe it has been shown possible to develop {100}(001) and {110}(001)6 surface energy driven secondary recrystallization textures. Further, it has been found that, on annealing very pure metals, grain growth normally ceases when a grain size approximately twice the strip thickness is acquired, due to the formation of V-shaped thermal grooves which result in an equilibrium being set up between surface and grain boundary stresses. If, however, a surface energy difference ??s, exists between adjacent grains (of the order of a few percent of the grain boundary energy ?b), then according to Mullins8 a secondary recrystallization may be effected, since the grains having lowest ?s would grow at the expense of their higher-energy neighbors. For clean bee metal surfaces ?110 should be lowest; however, for 3 pct Fe-Si (100) secondary structures have frequently been developed and have been attributed by Walter and Dunn9 to an alteration of the relative surface energies due to the preferential chemisorption of oxygen on (100) planes. Kohler,10 however, indicated that this reversal may be achieved by employing minute quantities of highly polar compounds in the annealing atmosphere, i.e., sulfur compounds, in par- ticular H2S being beneficial in (100) growth. This work has been verified by Kramer" using {100)/{110} bicrystals, while Mager12 demonstrated the importance of sulfur diffusion within the strip. Detert13 has intimated that carbon may be responsible for the preferential lowering of ?110 although no direct evidence has appeared yet to support this supposition. It must , be appreciated that the above-mentioned examples of surface energy driven secondary recrystallization were obtained with very pure vacuum-melted materials with oxygen contents (which is now known to be a critical factor") less than 35 ppm. During the course of a textural study on Si-Fe it has been found that under certain conditions (111) secondary recrystallization can be obtained by what is believed to be a surface energy growth selection mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to briefly describe this result and to try and postulate the possible causes. EXPERIMENTAL Two vacuum-induction-melted, nominally 3 pct Si-Fe alloys were produced, one from pure electrolytic iron and semiconductor-grade silicon designated A and the other from commercial-purity hot band, designated B.

The kinetics of the sulfation of MnO,, MnzO3, and Mn3O4 in SO,, SO3, and O, mixtures was examined and the descending order of sulfation rates at temperatures near 400°C was found to be Mn,O3 > MnO, > Mn3O4. The respective activation energies for the thermal decomposition of MnO, and Mn,O, are 39 and 47 kcal. At 900°C, the thernzal decomposition of MnSO, to MnzO3 is slower than that to Mn3O4. The respective activation energies are 62 and 51 kcal, respectitely. MANGANESE is used to improve the hot workability of steel in the proportions of approximately 13.5 Ib of ferromanganese per ton of steel produced. This requirement accounts for about 95 pct of its large industrial market in North America. The remaining 5 pct is used in the battery and chemical industries. In most North American ores, the percentage of manganese and the manganese-to-iron ratio are not suitable for the direct production of ferromanganese. Hence, most of the North American requirements for manganese are satisfied by importing ore. Typically, many of the studies done on native low-grade manganese resources have been directed toward the production of ore substittes" and the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slags.3 Of the wide variety of processes which have been proposed, the most popular involve compounds in the Mn-S-O system. The thermodynamic properties of manganese and its compounds were reviewed by ah&apos; in 1960 and, more recently, lngrahams discussed the thermodynamics of some of the reactions involved in the Mn-S-O system at normal roasting temperatures. The conditions for producing manganese sulfide during the reduction roasting of manganese sulfate are discussed by Fuller and Edlund.9 A novel scheme was proposed recently by zimmerley7 for utilizing waste sulfur dioxide from stack gases to recover the manganese from ocean-mined manganese nodules. Very little of the work published on manganese compounds has been related to reaction rates. Singleton et 1.&apos; studied the rates of reaction on the MnO-C and Mn7C3-3MnO systems and observed linear and parabolic kinetics respectively in the systems. Tatievskaya et a1.&apos; studied the low-temperature reduction of Mn&, MnO,, and Mn& in HZ and CO, and reported activation energies in the range 1628 kcal. In this paper, the rates of some of the decomposition and formation reactions involving MnSO4, MnOz, MnzO3, and Mn3O4 will be examined after the conditions for the thermodynamic stability of the individual compounds have been designated. CONDITIONS FOR STABILITY OF MnSO4, MnOz, MnZO3, AND Mn3O4 The areas of stability for h&apos;hSO4, MnOz, MnzO3, and h3O4 were established from the data of Mah4 and Ingrahams and are shown in the predominance area diagram,10 logpq- logpsq, in Fig. 1. The diagram is drawn for two temperatures, 700°K, solid lines, and 1100°K, dotted lines. The sketch for the lower temperature includes the conditions likely to prevail in the Zimmerley patent7 when manganese nodules react with sulfur dioxide and that for the higher temperature indicates the conditions for recovering MnzO3 or Mn3O4 from MnSO4 during a roasting reaction. From the fact that the boundary between the areas of stability of MnOz and hSO4 at 700°K is parallel to the abscissa, it is evident that MnOz and SO2 should react together to produce MnSO4, irrespective of the oxygen pressure in the system. If the source of sulfur for sulfation were from waste flue gases, it is likely that the oxygen content of the gas stream would be more than sufficient to oxidize any MnsO4 to MnzO3, 107 atm of O2 required, or even to convert any Mnz03 to MnOz, 0.02 atm OZ required, prior to sulfation. At 1100°K, the diagram indicates that MnSO4 may be converted directly to either MnzO3 of Mn3O4, depending upon the prevailing partial pressure of oxygen. When the gas stream contains more than 1 pct Oz, logpq = -2, only MnzO3 would be recovered from an experiment done under equilibrium conditions. At oxygen partial pressures of less than 1 pct, one would expect to bring about a reversible exchange between MnSO4 and Mn3O4 by appropriate adjustment of the partial pressure of SOZ. These various reactions will be described in the subsequent kinetic experiments.

The surfrrce-diffusion coefficients (DJ for Aulg8 on (100) and (111) surfaces of copper have been determined between 1050" and 780°C using a new avuzlysis imd experimental procedure. The results are: D, has also been determined fm cua4 at 870°C, and the values found are 4.5 times larger than those measured by the grain boundary grooving technique for the same surface orientations. This difference is felt to result from the approximate nature of the mathematical solution used in the present work. Attempts to measure D, for silver on copper and silver surfaces indicated a means of matter transport different from surface diffision was dominant in moving tracer from the source out over the surface. Cnlculations and experiment both indicate that this is the flow of silver through the vapor phase which completely masks the much smaller flow due to surface diffusion. The previous self-difhsion studies of D, for silver and copper are discussed in terms of our own analysis and found to yield values of D, factors of lo5 or more greater than those found by the grain boundary grooving tech -nique. UNTIL about 5 years ago it was widely believed that the activation energy for surface diffusion, AH, , was less than that for grain boundary diffusion, AHb,, which in turn was less than that for diffusion through the lattice, AHz.&apos; This was concluded from various evidence that D,> Db>Dl, and one tracer study of D, for silver on silver from which AH, was inferred.2 In 1959 Mullins and Shewmon demonstrated that D, could be determined from the kinetics of the growth of grain-boundary grooves.3 Using this procedure, Gjostein measured D, on copper between 800" and 1050°C and found that the activation energy was roughly equal to AHl .4 Subsequent work on copper,5" silver,&apos;,&apos; and goldg between the melting temperature T, and 0.87 T, confirmed that AH, as determined using the grain boundary grooving or scratch-relaxation technique was equal to or greater than AHz. During the same period, Drew and Pye again determined AH, for silver on silver using a tracer techniquelo and a mathematical solution similar to that of Nicker son and arker.&apos; Though the values of D, Drew and Pye measured at any given temperature were about 200 times smaller than those reported by Nickerson and Parker, they again found a low activation energy of about 10 kcal, or about one fifth that found at the higher temperatures with the mass transport technique. A distinguishing characteristic of these two previous tracer studies is that they have worked at low temperatures (-1/2 T,) where they felt volume diffusion was negligible and then analyzed these data as if all tracer atoms leaving the source flowed out into and remained in a homogeneous high-diffusivity surface layer of undefined thickness. This is totally different from the model used in the mass-transport studies or the studies of grain boundary diffusion, which assume the high-diffusivity surface layer to be only a few angstroms thick. If this latter model is applied to the earlier tracer studies, it is shown that the tracer has really pe!etrated into the lattice a mean distance of 1000A. Thus the tracer distribution observed after an anneal is thought to be due to the combined effects of surface and volume diffusion. Independent of the relative validity of the two models, it seems evident to us that any comparison of the values of D, as determined in these two ways is meaningless and misleading, since the values of D, and AH, obtained in these two ways would be totally different for the same physical distributions of tracer. Once the fundamental difference in the approaches of the two techniques is established, we are faced with the question of which model better approximates physical reality. Here all the evidence seems to be on the side of the &apos;&apos;thin surface layer" analysis. In fact, the authors of Refs. 2 and 9 do not argue for the "thick-layer model" we have described; they simply invoke it through the equation they use to calculate D, . The primary evidence for the thin-film approach is: a) grain boundary grooves and scratches widen in proportion to tU4 and Mullins&apos; rigorous analysis shows that this is only valid for a surface layer which is quite thin relative to the width of the groove;11 b) all accepted or seriously discussed models of solid-vapor interfaces and high-angle grain boundaries assume that the disturbed region of the interface is at most a few a0 thick. With the above in mind, it was desirable to determine D, using a radioactive tracer and a "thin-

Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu&apos;s. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation&apos;s energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu&apos;s by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

THE first authentic description of an iron bath for the deposition of iron is probably that of Bottger in 1846, who used a bath containing ferrous sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1.869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is said to have worked out his process. Jacobi1 in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein&apos;s process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeSO4 + (NH4)2S04. Lenz2 described ?some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein&apos;s bath, FeSO4 + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. So far as is known, Siemens did not carry out his patent

, The solution of the housing and sanitation problem in mining communities, keeping in view both economic and humanitarian aspects, demands the best thought of the management of such enterprises. Upon the solution depend the health and comfort of the employee and his family, and as a consequence his contentment and efficiency. The following description covcrs briefly the methods installed for Witherbee, Sherman & Co. The operation of the system has been for about two years under the direct supervision of T. A. Hammond, Land Agent, and I am indebted to him for a compilation of the results. Sanitation The sanitary service covers 238 tenements. The installation cost was about $22 per tenement, as follows: Privy, $15; privy box, $3; proportion of incinerator cost, $2; garbage can, $2. The operating cost is $1 per month for each tenement. In considering the installation of an ordinary village system of water supply and sewerage two difficulties were encountered: First, lack of a sufficient quantity of water; there is no stream large enough, as Mineville is situated very close to the divide between the Lake Champlain and Hudson River watersheds. A storage reservoir was tried, but the only location available, among glacial hills, would not hold water. Second, the expense of digging ditches for the distribution of water and sewer pipes is so great as to be prohibitive; Mineville is built chiefly in a valley covered in the bottom with drift, in this case a combination of boulders and hard pan. Digging in this material costs 80c. to $1 per cubic yard, and pipes must be placed 41/2 ft. down to be below frost. The houses are scattered along 4 miles of streets, the oldest having been built in the original forest 65 years ago. The newer houses have gone up a few at a time wherevcr a clear space could be found and the slopes were not too steep. This has advantages, as it separates the dwellings into

Four counties in Indiana- LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland-have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or near high population areas and have no surface-mineable limestone deposits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Mineable seams suitable for aggregate are 120-150 m (400-500 ft) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 m (300 ft) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 m (2,000 ft) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

The transient one-dimensional heat-conduction equation is solved for two semi-infinite media, at different initial temperatures, brought into (poor) thermal contact. It is shown that the two interface temperatures gradually approach the well-known, instantaneously assumed, common interface temperature of the case of zero contact resistance. The present analysis, with slight modifications, may be used in fair approximation also for the class of problems involving a change of phase. One particular application of the boundary value problem solved in this paper concerns the determination of the temerature distribution in metal castings and molds.P This problem has been treated extensively by analytical methods (see e.g., the literature listed in Refs. 1 to 4) by electrical analogs (see e.g., Refs. 11 to 14) and also by experimental methods (see the literature listed in Refs. 4, 5), but prior to the work of Pellini and Ruddle the experimental results were rather unreliable. Immediate motivation for the work described in this paper was to better understand the results of Pellini,&apos; which are typified by the curves of Fig. 1. Pellini cast 20-in. high, 7-in. sq steel ingots into cast-iron molds of various thicknesses. He measured the temperatures at mid-height, at a number of stations in the casting and the mold, and obtained the cooling curves shown in Fig. 1. The most conspicuous thing about Fig. 1 is the large temperature discontinuity at the interface between casting and mold, due presumably to the shrinking away of the casting from the wall and the attendant creation of an airgap, as the casting cools. Such a contact resistance slows down the anticipated freezing rate; an analytical prediction of this is of much interest in foundry practice. The determination of the effect of contact resistance in the presence of a change of phase will be dealt with, by an approximate method, in a separate paper.&apos; In the present paper the much simpler problem is considered in which there is contact resistance but no change of phase. This problem frequently arises in the analysis of aircraft structures.+ It can initial temperature, and may be regarded as semi-infinite. We suppose the thermal properties in the two media to be time, temperature, and space independent; there are no sources or sinks within the media. In Fig. 2(a) we illustrate, schematically, the case of no contact resistance. The semi-infinite media "0" and "2:&apos; initially at temperatures 8 (- m) and 8(+ -), respectively, are brought into contact at time t =0. A common interface temperature 8,i = is instantaneously established, and thereafter remains constant. Temperature curves are drawn for three instants of time. When there is contact resistance between the two media, the temperature equalization occurs as sketched in Fig. 2(b). Fig. 2(c) illustrates a temperature curve, using the dimension-less notation Barber-Weiner-Boley6 have stated the equations [23a, b] given below, which govern the heat transfer in the two media, and solved them for a rather complicated special case. In their example both media "O" and "2" are finite, are insulated at their far ends, and there is steady heat input into medium 2. In Eq. [27] we give the general solution of the most important special case, where the two media are semi-infinite and there are no sources or sinks. In this case the results may be stated in simple closed form. In Fig. 3, to be discussed in the next section, we illustrate the variation of the interface temperature when steel at 2760" is brought into contact with iron at 100". This example, if we disregard the effect of the heat of fusion, is comparable to Pellini&apos;s experimental results, Fig. 1. (Unfortunately, however, experimental determination of the interface temperatures was difficult to carry out, and hence Fig. 1 is not very accurate near the interface.) In Figs. 4 and 5 of the following section, we similarly compare Pellini&apos;s sandcasting tests with analytical results for the case where steel at 2760" is brought into contact with sand at 100". It will be pointed out that, insofar as the interface temperatures are concerned, heat of fusion has a minor effect, and so the present approximation, with small modifications, may be

INTERESTING developments going on in European coal mines look to: (1) increasing mechanization; 12) concentration of mining; (3) improvement in safety appliances; and (4) studies in bettering roof supports and. incident to this, studies of the way a roof behaves under different conditions of support and methods of mining and back-filling. Mechanization and concentration off mining is being adapted to a considerable extent in Great Britain coincident with the development of conveyors. Belt conveyors, shaker-pan conveyors, and a combination of the two are used. For pitching seams not steep enough for the coal to run in station-chutes, the. shaker-pan conveyor is more popular. For large outputs from a contiguous face, the double-unit system of face layout-that is, the conveyors meeting at a common point-is favored.

The kinetics of silicate adsorption from aqueous colloidal (SO2 . nH2O) silicate sols on thoria (ThO 2) surfaces were determined at 100, 150 and 200°C in an autoclave system. The amount of chemisorbed silica on the thoria surface was determined by means of infrared spectroscopy. First order kinetics were observed in all cases with the anomalous result that the first order rate constant was found to vary with the initial amount of silica added to the system. These results have been correlated quantitatively by means of a strain model of adsorption involving two types of surface silicate bonding, both of which may be readily observed in the infrared spectrum. Initial adsorption occurs rapidly to produce one type of surface silicate followed by a slow transition to a second type of surface bonding, the latter transition representing the slow step in the adsorption process. Initial interest in silicate adsorption on thoria arose from the dispersive effect silica has on finely divided thoria in aqueous suspensions. Spaepen et al studied the equilibrium adsorption of silica on thoria and noted increased adsorption up to approximately 215°C with a notable decrease in adsorption at temperatures above 215°C. Similar results were observed by Cho and Wadsworth2 who identified two types of surface silica by infrared spectroscopy. At temperatures of 100°C and above, rapid initial adsorption occurred producing a surface species with maximum infrared absorbance at 9.4 After extended periods of time, the 9.4 species converted to a more strongly bonded surface silicate with maximum infrared absorbance at 10.3. The latter was very strongly bonded and difficult to remove by desorption in hot distilled water, while the 9.4 species could be removed more readily by similar treatment. The 9.4 and 10.3-p species were distinguishable from free unadsorbed silica which had maximum infrared absorbance at 9.1 The kinetics of the formation of the strongly chemisorbed silica (10.3) on thoria as determined by infrared examination are presented in this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As a source of silicate, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) or Ludox HS (30.25% SO2), DU Pont colloidal silica in aqueous suspensions, was added directly to a thoria slurry made up of one liter of distilled water and one gram of thoria. The thoria used was designated D-16-650 and was received from the Chemical Technology Div. of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. It was prepared by firing thorium oxalate at 650°C. The D-16 thoria had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 sq m per g as determined by nitrogen adsorption.* This thoria &apos;Determined by Unlon Carbide Nuclear Co., ORNL. had a total adsorption capacity for silicate of approximately 19.4 mg of silica per gram of thoria.1 This amounts to approximately one SiO2 molecule for every surface thoria site. In all cases in this study.

The Ashio copper-mine of the Furukawa Mining Co. is situated 18 miles from Nikko, and 109 miles north of Tokyo, near the center of Japan. The mine-waters are run over scrap-iron, whereby most of the copper is precipitated as cement-copper, leaving iron sulphate with some copper sulphate in solution. After using in the wet concentrating ore-dressing plant, the waste water contains clay and ore-slimes. The only avenue of disposal of this water is the Watarese river; but as this flows through valleys in which the water is used for irrigating the rice-crops, it is necessary to purify and clarify the water before discharge. The water amounts to from 600 to 700 cu. ft. (from 17 to 20 cu. m.) per minute, and averages about 0.00028 per cent. of copper, representing more than 18 tolls of copper per month. The TTT curves of 0.1 pct C, 13 pct Cr steels containing up to 12 pct Co have been determined in order to establish whether the effect of cobalt is similar to that observed m plain carbon steels. It is shown that cobalt increases the incubation time and decreases the transformation rate, though not in an uniform way. The bainitic transfornation is displaced to lower temperature and overlaps partially the martensitic zone. ThE effect of cobalt on the transformation of a plain carbon austenite has been studied by many investi-gators.&apos;-3 It was shown that cobalt displaces the TTT curves to shorter times and diminishes the harden-ability. The interpretations given for this effect of cobalt are conflicting. According to E. Houdremont,4 cobalt increases the transformation rate of austenite because it increases the diffusion of carbon as shown in the experiments of E. Houdremont and H.Schrader,&apos; R.Smoluchowski,5 and M. Blanter.6 On the other hand, M. Hawites and R. Mehl3 deny on the basis of their own experiments any effect of cobalt on the diffusion of carbon and they assume that an explanation should be found in an eventual effect of cobalt on the mechanism of nucleation and growth of pearlite. W. C. Hagel, G. M. Pound, and R. F. Mehl7 have shown by calorimetric measurements that cobalt increases the free energy of the austenite-pearlite transformation in an eutectoid steel and this result explains qualitatively the observed effect of cobalt on the rate of nucleation and growth of pearlite. The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive base metal sulphide deposit with surface dimensions of 168 m by 670 m. The steeply dipping ore- body has been evaluated to a depth of 1 524 m. To date, the mining of the orebody has been divided into three stages. The first stage of mining was an open pit operation which supplied ore from 1966 until 1977 when a depth of 219 m was reached at the widest or north end of the orebody. The second stage of mining, called No.1 Mine, was the development of an underground mine to replace the pit and recover the ore from the floor of the pit to a depth of 792 m. Development of the underground mine started in 1969. Full production of 273 000 tonnes per month was attained in 1977. The third stage of mining called No.2 Mine, was initiated to accommodate a production expansion and included the development of a second underground mining operation to recover the ore from the bottom of No.1 Mine, i.e. the 2600 level; to a depth as yet undetermined but most likely the 4600 foot level. Development of the No.2 Mine began in 1974. Full production of 91 000 tonnes per month will be achieved in 1982. The choice of the 2800 level as the partition between the two underground mines was based on the following factors: The 2600 level is the lowest level which can conveniently be mined through the No.1 Mine crusher on the 2800 level. Development and trial stoping methods for mining at depth could be evaluated in the 2600 to 2800 block utilizing the existing hoisting facilities of No.1 Mine. Early development of the ore in the 2600 to 2800 block would provide additional mill feed sooner than could be achieved by developing from No.2 Shaft. The underground mining plan then is to mine from the pit floor down to the 2600 foot level and at the same time mine from the 2800 level down to at least the 4600 foot level. PLANNING The Kidd Creek operations are designed to follow a logical mining sequence. The grade of ore supplied to the concentrator is the result of following the mining plan. The philosophy of mining has been to mine downward in horizontal slices. In the case of No.1 Mine the slices are 122 m thick while in No.2 Mine the slices will be 183 m thick. The point of this approach is to mine the pillars immediately after creating them rather than allowing them to stand, deteriorate and generate uncontrollable situations. Two types of ore are handled separately to optimize recoverable values in concentrates. The &apos;A&apos; type ore is a copper zinc ore with some silver and little lead. The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger&apos;s, Allen&apos;s, or Stokes&apos;, over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. Discussion of the paper of H. 0. Hofman and C. R. Hayward, presented at the New Haven Meeting, February, 1909, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, June, 1909, pp. 513 to 529. GEORGE W. Hofman and Hayward deal with a branch of silver metallurgy that is on very uncertain ground, both as a commercial process and as a metallurgical science; moreover, its field is limited to few localities and to peculiar conditions. The literature on the subject is incomplete and full of conflicts. The paper under discussion clears u p no disputed points; on the contrary, because of hasty generalization, its tendency is towards further confusion. In Table I., the authors assume that each test-lot of 1,800 g. of ore contained exactly 5.499 g. of silver, that any variation in the quantity of silver recovered, however slight, should be ascribed to variation in the time of grinding. It is barely possible that the ore was mixed so uniformly as to justify this assumption; but those of us who know how difficult it is to get uniform samples of any ore in which silver mineral is present in rich particles will have a doubt on this point. The unlikelihood of getting absolutely uniform test-lots of ore also reflects on the data in Table II., on the effect of varying the amount of salt in a pan-charge. The authors say " The salt series was the last one that was investigated." This again raises a question as to whether the ore was split into test-lots at the time of sampling, or whether it was kept in bulk in such a way as to permit mechanical concentration of values before the end of the experiments. The conclusion following Table II.: " There is no reason, therefore, for going beyond six per cent. of salt," is hardly to the point. Equilibrium data are reported on the composition and densities of coexisting vapor and liquid phases as a function of Pressure and temperature for four hydrocarbon systems prepared from crude oil and natural gas. The data were observed over a range of pressures from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35&apos; to 250°F. The compositions of the hydrocarbon systems were such that the critical temperatures of the mixtures were lower than the range of the investigation. Under these conditions, it is shown that the composition of the systems has a marked effect upon both the absolute value of the equilibrium constants and the change of the constants with pressure for the several components comprising the system. From weight-balance considerations, it has been possible to construct the partial phase diagram of a mixture of a 49.9" A.P.I. crude oil and natural gas having a gas-oil ratio of 3660 cu. ft. per barrel. Descriptions of the apparatus used, the analytical procedure, the material used, and the equilibrium measurements are included. A knowledge of the physical behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures is fundamental to the treatment of many problems in the production, transportation and rehing of petroleum. The recent discoveries of pools having formation pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in. and higher, and the development of full-scale equipment to operate at pressures of 5000 lb. per sq. in. or more have greatly increased the need for knowledge of the composition, temperature, pressure and density relationships of coexisting vapor and liquid hydrocarbon phases. The following paper presents the results of investigations upon 22 mixtures of natural gas and crude oil of known com~o~itio~ that had been brought to equilibrium under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure.
