CONSIDERABLE difference of opinion seems to exist as to whether the rate of air flow when a fan is placed on a given duct should be determined by the use of static pressure or total pressure characteristics. A little study will show that both methods are correct. Assume that a fan is connected to a duct by an expansion piece as shown in Fig. 1, and that steady flow is established. Considering the atmospheric pressure as zero pressure, let the static head at the outlet of the fan be h and the velocity at this point be v1. The total head at the outlet is then h + v1/2g? The total head at this point must be equal to the total head at the end of the duct plus the losses that have occurred between the two points. Let f be the friction loss in the straight duct, s the shock loss in the dif- fuser, and V2 the velocity at the end of the duct. Then h+ v12/2g=v22/2g + f + s FIG. 1.-FAN ON DUCT. An experimental survey has determined the occurrence of Ti2 Ni-type phases in binary and ternary alloys of Ti, Zr, or Hf with first, second, or third long-period transition metals and also in ternary systems in which 0 is the third component. The existence of eleven previously unreported isomorphs is cited and some approximate phase boundaries are given. Lattice parameters are reported for the new phases. The periodic table relationships involved in the occurrence of the phase are discussed. A previous paper&apos; reported the occurrence of a group of Ti2Ni-type phases (structure-type E93) containing Zr in combination with Rh, Ir, and Pt, and Hf in combination with Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt, and cited evidence to show that all of the Zr phases and the Hf-Pd phase are not binary phases but occur only when 0 is present. More recently one of the present authors found that in the ternary systems of Ti and 0 with Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni the occurrence of the Ti2Ni-type phase could be correlated qualitatively with valency electron concentration, and that the role of 0 appeared to be that of an electron acceptor.&apos; This paper describes the results of a broader investigation of the occurrence of Ti2Ni-type phases in binary and ternary systems containing Ti, Zr, or Hf. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by arc melting. The purity of the metals Zr, Rh, Hf, Ir, Pd, and Pt was given in the previous paper.&apos; The additional materials used for this work were metals with a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and reagent grade ZrO2, TiO2, Cr2O3, and NiO. Chemical analysis of several alloys in each system indicated good agreement between intended compositions and cast-button compositions. For the heat treatment precautions were taken to avoid oxygen contamination. The specimens were wrapped in Mo foil and sealed in fused quartz tubes at a room temperature pressure of 1 x mm of Hg. These capsules were then annealed in a vacuum furnace at an external pressure of 5 X mm of Hg. Since the major constituent in most of the alloys studied was the brittle Ti2Ni-type phase, Debye-Scherrer patterns with sharp lines could be obtained with powder crushed from the annealed solid samples without being reannealed. Metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and density determination techniques previously described1, 2 were used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-Oand Zr-Pt-O Systems-Figs. 1 through 3 show the approximate boundaries of the Ti2Ni-type phase fields at the temperatures indicated in the ternary systems Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-O and Zr-Pt-0. In each isothermal section the Ti2Ni-type phase field is labeled E and the unidentified binary phase found in the previous work&apos; is labeled ?. The dotted lines, which are not phase boundaries, correspond to the composition (Zr2 B)1-xOx. In each system the Ti2Ni-type phase field is displaced to the high-Zr side of this composition line. However, the departures from Zr2B stoichiometry for the metal components are not as high as Zr3B, as was inferred from the previous work. Lattice parameters of the Ti2Ni-type phases in the alloys shown as triangular data points in Figs. 1 through 3 are given in Table IA. The probable compositions of the Ti2Ni-type phases have been estimated from the isothermal sections. The Mg-Zr alloy ZA and Mg-Mn alloy AM503(S) are shown to have a markedly improved resistance to creep deformation after suitable heat treatments. This improvement makes them suitable for certain stress-bearing fuel element components in nuclear reactors. The extent of strengthening is described and an explanation of the behavior of both materials is given, based on a combination of strain-aging and grain growth. The increase in operating temperatures of fuel element components in Calder Hall type nuclear reactors has necessitated the development of magnesium base alloys with a very high resistance to creep at temperatures up to 500°C. Such alloys are not required for fuel element cans, which require high-creep ductility rather than strength, but for can supporting and stabilizing components, which are needed to support the imposed loads without deforming more than about 1 pct in times of up to 40,000 hr. The amount and type of alloying addition made to magnesium for these parts is limited by the necessity of keeping the cross-section to thermal neutrons as low as possible. The alloys must also possess a high resistance to oxidation in CO2. Alloys which have been developed for this application include ZA, an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.7 pct Zr and AM503(S), an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.75 pct Mn. In the as-extruded condition these alloys are very weak and ductile in creep but it has been found that they can be strengthened to a significant extent by heat treatment. This paper describes the method of developing a high-creep resistance in ZA and AM503(S), the extent of the strengthening produced and discusses the probable mechanisms of strengthening. TEST MATERIALS Specimens were taken from typical casts of ZA and AM503(S) alloys extruded into 2 1/4-in.-diam bars, supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd. Typical analyses of the bars were as follows: The as-extruded mean grain diameter was 0.001 to 0.002 in. for the ZA alloy and 0.003 in. for the AM503(S) alloy. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Extruded bars of ZA alloy, 2 1/4 in. in diameter and 9 in. long, were heat treated in electrical resistance furnaces in an atmosphere of flowing CO2 containing 50 to 300 ppm water, thereby reducing the extent of oxidation compared with that which would have occurred in air. Heat treatments were carried out at 600oc for times of 8, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr and material was subsequently both furnace cooled and water quenched. In order to measure the effect of time of heat treatment, specimens were creep tested at 400°C and 336 psi for about 1000 hr. Subsequently, the behavior of material heat treated for 96 hr at 600°C and furnace cooled was tested at a variety of stresses from 200° to 500°C. Tests were also conducted at 200o and 400°C on material in the as-extruded condition for comparative purposes. With the AM503(S) alloy, only the effect of heat treatment at 565°C for 4 hr was examined. It has been shown1 that such a heat treatment produces marked strengthening in this alloy. Tests on this material were conducted at a variety of stresses at 200°, 300°, and 400oc with comparative tests on as-extruded material at 200o and 400°C. The creep tests were carried out on machines using dead-weight loading and direct micrometer strain measurements on specimens 5 in. long and 0.357 in. diameter. At temperatures of 400° C and below, the creep tests were conducted in air, but at higher temperatures an atmosphere of CO2 was used. Grain size measurements were made on ZA in the extruded and heat treated states and on each specimen after creep testing. This was done by a line count of a minimum of 20 grains in two or three random fields in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The same method was used for measuring the grain size of as-extruded AM503(S), but the grain size of the heat treated material was so large that this method could not be employed. For heat-treated AM503(S) the large grained characteristics (between 0.1 and 1 in.) were confirmed by the measurement of individual grains. In the case of the ZA alloy, specimens taken from various stages in the program were analysed for hydrogen by a combustion method. A thoroughly modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal H. H. &. Coal Co.&apos;s new No. 8 shaft, or Cover-dale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur of the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh scam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with thcir remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. Mine Substation The transformer substation is adjacent to a. pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies. Main Switchboard The 2300-volt circuit is carried underground in a conduit from the transformer substation to an oil switch in the substation and supply hoist building. This is the main switch controlling the 2300-volt busbars mounted back to a twelve-panel black-slate switchboard. From the switchboard, 2300-volt circuits are carried to transformers feeding the street and house lighting systems and to other transformers furnishing power for the elevator and lighting circuits in the store building. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron has been measured as a function of pressure and temperature. Sieverts&apos; Law is obeyed at all pressures up to 1 atm and the temperature coefficient of solubility is 8 x 106 %/°C. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by the Sieverts&apos; method and by the sampling method. The solubility is decreased by Al, C, Co Cu, Ni, 0. Si atzd Sn, and it is increased by Cr, Cb, Mn, Mo, Ta, W, and V. Interaction coefficients eN, for the effect of these elements on nitrogen dissolved in liquid iron, are reported. 1 HE effect of nitrogen upon the properties of steel may be desirable or not, depending upon the composition, processing treatment, and the use of the product. To understand the behavior of nitrogen in the various steelmaking processes, it is necessary to have reliable fundamental data pertaining to the solubilities, rates of solution, and chemical reactions of nitrogen in steel, particularly in the liquid state. In an effort to extend our knowledge in these areas, an investigation of the thermodynamics and kinetics of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys was undertaken. The thermodynamic aspects of the study are presented in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron has received the attention of several investigators whose results are summarized in Table I. Reasonable agreement among the more recent researches1-l8 is found for the solubility of approximately 0.044 wt pct at 1600°C and 1-atm pressure of N,, for the temperature coefficient of solubility being small but positive, and for adherence to Sieverts&apos; law for pressures up to 1 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in a number of binary liquid iron alloys has been studied: Fe-A1,3 Fe-As,16 Fe-C,3, 71 18, 19, 20 Fe-Cr ,5,7, 10, 11, 15 21 Fe-Co,&apos;4, &apos;6 Fe-Cu,&apos;6 Fe-Mn,10, 11, 18 Fe-Mo,13, 16 Fe-Ni,10, 11, 13, 15, 16 Fe-O,16, 17, l9 Fe-p,7 Fe-S,l6 Fe-Sb,16 Fe-Se,lg Fe-Si,4) 97 &apos;77 187 19>2° Fe-Sn,16 and Fe-v.51 &apos;3 A few ternary systems have been studied, most of which were reviewed by ~angenberg" who applied the methods suggested by WagnerPz3 Chipman,24 Darken and G~rry, and Morris and Buehl26 for predicting solubilities in multicomponent alloys. INTRODUCTION India like USA has traditionally relied on bord and pillars as dominant underground method. Coal has generally been mined at shallow depth from relatively thick and horizontally bedded coal seams. These&apos; factors contributed towards large scale adoption of bard and pillar. After nationalisation of coal industry in two stages in 1971 and 1973, large scale mechanisation and modernisation programmes were undertaken. Longwall mining was identified as one of the major that area for increasing underground coal production. The idea to introduce longwall mining was mooted to increase productivity and to promote conservation and safety. The nationalised coal industry has already worked about twenty longwall faces with different types of support. The tempo of introducing longwall is catching up and a number of longwall programmes with, Self advancing supports of different types and Capacity are in active stage of implementation. The country has not yet started producing mechanised Supports and therefore supports and machineries are being imported from U.K. and other countries of the continent. The of the major problem faced in the longwall projects is to choose suitable type and capacity of supports. The suppliers and manufacturers of these supports are not competent enough to choose and offer the right type and capacity of supports as their knowledge and information about Indian strata conditions are extremely limited. The Central Wining Research Station (Q.!RS), has undertaken a research programme for evaluating the rock mechanical conditions obtaining in the proposed longwall locales and has worked out a method for selection of proper type and capacity of supports on the basis of projected strata behaviour at the proposed locale. STRATA CCNTROL FAILURES Indian coal industry had made some attempts to introduce longwall caving in the early fifties after a working group set up by the Government of India had recommended its adoption to increase productivity and to modernise mines. Approximately 20 longwall faces were tried in the major Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpurr between 1951 and 1968. The supports used consisted of 20T hydraulic props or 35140~ friction props. A number of these faces had suffered total strata control failures and a large number of support elements were lost. The Central Mining Research Station initiated a research programme to analyse these failures in the general background of behaviour of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. All the available data regarding the cases of failures were collected and physico-mechanical properties of overlying roof rocks were determined in the laboratory. Simultaneously, observations were continued to establish the behviour pattern of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. These studies were helpful in analysing the occurrences of collapse. BEHAVIOUR OF INDIAN COAL MEASURE STRATA The coal measure strata encountered in the principal Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpura are in general strong in nature however, the immediate roof (mostly up to 1.5 to 2 m) in most of the cases is weak and false bedded shale. ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,&apos; in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton&apos;s original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents. HISTORY OF BLASTING WITH EXPLOSIVES At one time workmen obtained stone blocks for building by grooving the rock with crude picks, driving wooden wedges into niches in the rock, and pouring water on the wedges; the swelling of the wood forced out the blocks. As late as the 17th century, fires were placed against the face of rock to crack it, and water was sometimes dashed on the heated rock to shatter it by sudden cooling. Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May 2 and 15, and June 19. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa.. ; Seattle, Wash.; Fayetteville, Ark. Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Worcester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It. was suggested that a member of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. DEFINITE improvement in its accident fatality rate in the coal-mining industry was recorded during 1941, based on preliminary figures for the period from January through October. Total production during this ten-month period was approximately 91 percent of the total production in all of 1940. The ten-month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1941 was 2.15 killed per million tons of coal mined, compared with a rate of 2.66 for the full year of 1940. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.55 in 1940 to 1.99 in ten months of 1941, and the anthracite rate from 3.62 to 3.53 in similar periods. The decrease is more apparent for the bituminous branch of the industry, as the high figure in 1940 was due to seven major disasters which brought death to 276 men. The same number of major explosions during ten months of 1941 caused only 64 lives to be lost. The severity of the explosions has been lower this year but a definite need still exists for reduction in this type of accident.

Rotary kilns are adaptable to many fuels, but this paper deals principally with the use of powdered coal. The observations and conclusions presented are based on rotary kilns used in the manufacture of basic refractories for steel furnaces. Solid fuels are pulverized for two principal reasons: (I) ease of control, and (2) rapidity of combustion. By the use of pulverized coal, the operator can increase or decrease the fuel supply by small increments and with very little time lag between the change of control and the resultant change in the flame. This is extremely important in this type of furnace, as the temperature range for maturing the clinker is very narrow. By fine grinding, it is possible to increase the rate of burning of the coal, thereby liberating great quantities of heat within a small space in a short time. Under given conditions, temperature is a measure of the heat liberated per unit of time. To attain the temperatures of 2950° to 3150ºF., which are encountered in the manufacture of various steel-furnace refractories, it is estimated that it is necessary to liberate 125,000 to 175,000 B.t.u. per cubic foot of the burning zone per hour. The manufacture of dolomitic refractories is a ceramic process and, as is true in most such processes, the material must be subjected to a certain critical temperature for a certain length of time in order to complete the reaction. If the time of reaction is reduced, the temperature must be increased; in other words, if the rate at which the material flows through the hot zone of the kiln is increased, the temperature of the hot zone must be increased to compensate for this shorter exposure to the flame. Firing with Pulverized Coal Fig. I is a line drawing of a rotary kiln with the attendant equipment indicated in their relative positions. The kiln proper consists of a sloping, refractory-lined steel tube rotating slowly about its longitudinal axis (0.75 r.p.m.), and is countercurrent in operation in that the raw feed is introduced at the stack end and gradually approaches the zone of highest temperature at the lower end, where the fuel is introduced. Before 1930, the usual method of firing a rotary kiln was to store the coal in the pulverized form and then feed from this storage to the kiln as needed. This proved unsatisfactory and dangerous because of dust explosions and the inability to obtain an even feed to the kiln caused by arching of the coal in storage and flooding of the coal feeders. In later years the practice has been to store the raw coal and grind it as it is needed. Such a layout is indicated in Fig. I. The coal is stored in bins, charged from the top and drawn from the bottom into recording scales and then into some type of unit pulverizer. There are a number of good pulverizers .on the market, each incorporating features that the manufacturer considers outstanding.

Mineral pigments give color, opacity, or body to paint, stucco, plaster, mortar, cement, linoleum, rubber, and similar materials. They must be finely divided, substantially insoluble, and generally inert for such uses. Inorganic pigments may be grouped somewhat arbitrarily as follows: A. Natural mineral pigments dug from the earth. 1. Those consisting mostly of iron oxides, such as hematite and limonite. 2. Those containing large amounts of clay or noncoloring matter, such as ocher, sienna, umber, and colored shales. 3. Those whose color is not due to iron oxide, such as Vandyke brown (including sap brown, an alkali extract of Vandyke brown), graphite, and terre verte. B. Synthetic pigments. 1. Those containing iron oxide as the essential coloring matter, such as "pure" reds, yellows, and blacks, and Venetian reds. 2. Those not containing iron oxide, but rather such compounds as lithopone, zinc white, titanium white, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and the like. Only groups A and B-1 are discussed here. All the pigments in those two categories, except Vandyke brown, sap brown, and some of the carbonaceous slates, contain, as their essential color constituents, one or more compounds of iron; namely, an oxide-limonite (2Fe2O3.H2O to Fe2O3.4H20), hematite (Fe2O3), or magnetite (Fe2O3.FeO). Man&apos;s first permanent coloring materials were earth pigments-the ochers, iron oxides, and various iron-stained clays. The caves occupied by prehistoric man and the arts of the ancient Chaldean, Egyptian, and Cretan civilizations bear mute witness to this and also testify to the beauty and permanence of earth colors. As the Roman era developed, earth pigments were pushed from their pre-eminent position by white lead and red lead and in the Middle Ages by zinc oxide. Today, of course, the number of acceptable pigments is very large and on a value basis the group of natural and synthetic earth pigments stands forth with $16,000,000 per year; it is surpassed by titanium, lead and zinc pigments. Of this sum,21 natural pigments supplied 31 pct of the tonnage and 16 pct of the value of the total finished pigment in 1957, the remainder representing the tonnage and value of sales of the synthetic iron oxide colors. The average value of finished natural pigments in 1958 was $80.62 per ton. The average value of manufactured pigments in the same year was $202 per ton. Of the 60,000 tons of manufactured colored pigments sold in 1958, the reds comprised 76 pct of the market and the yellows 20 pct. The reds furnished 68 pct of the value and the yellows 24 pct. Of the finished iron oxide pigments (natural and manufactured) sold in 1958, the reds dominated the market with 66 pct of the quantity and 63 pct of the value; yellows supplied 17 pct of the quantity and 20 pct of the value, and browns furnished 11 pct of the quantity and 10 pct of the value. The average value of the reds was approximately $152, and the average value of the yellows $190 per ton. The highest valued pigment in 1958, with almost 12 pct of the total tonnage and 21 pct of the value of the iron oxide pigment market, was manufactured red from calcined copperas valued at $286 per ton.

Activation of sphalerite with copper salts has long been thought of as a chemical reaction of the following form: ZnS + Cu++ [=] CuS + Zn++ [ 1 ] Early experimentation1-3 showed that the reaction seemed to be stopped by the coating of insoluble copper sulfide, but since the analytical methods were crude, it was only surmised that the reaction could proceed by diffusion. Probably the most conclusive evidence for reaction (Eq. 1) was obtained by Cooke,4 who found a stoichiometric replacement of Zn++ by Cu" after 50 days&apos; reaction at about 100°C. Cooke also found the sphalerite to be covered with a rather thick coating of covellite, which in¬dicates that activation is a continuing replacement of Zn++ by Cu" rather than diffusion of Cu" throughout the sphalerite lattice. However, the occurrence of diffusion at high temperatures has been observed.5,6

LONGYEAR.*-Mr. Collins is to be commended very highly for the brief summary he has made of the currently used methods of taking diamond-drill sludge samples and the principles involved in evaluating the results. This paper should stimulate further discussion and research on this vitally important problem. It is particularly imperative that geologists and engineers know when assay results on sludge recovery can be accepted quantitatively and when they must be considered only qualitatively. In most cases where the sludge recovery is less than 95 per cent or more than 125 per cent, it is safest to consider the assays as of qualitative value only. Certain cases, however, are known where a relatively small proportion of the sludge sampling will give a reasonably accurate measure of the value of the total sample. One such case is ore in which the valuable mineral is of approximately the same specific gravity as the waste mineral, such as chalcopyrite in a massive pyrite body. The essential point is to determine the degree of accuracy of sludge sampling in any given drilling project and to weigh the results accordingly. It should be emphasized, however, that sludge sampling can be made reliable in many localities where careless practice produces unreliable results. In many instances, it is desirable to empty the core barrel in the core shack instead of at the drill, so that the engineer can examine the core as it first comes from the core barrel. It should be pointed out, however, that the drill * E. J. Longyear Co., Minneapolis, Minnesota. runner should be permitted to study the core to guide his future drilling. It is hoped that with the return of more normal conditions after the war geologists, engineers, contractors, and manufacturers will be able to carry on more research along the lines of improved core-barrel design and drilling technique with the objective of increasing core recovery so as to eliminate as far as possible the necessity of relying upon sludge samples. H. M. ROBERTS.*-Whoever in the future will have to do with the search for ore bodies and their exploration will have frequent occasion to refer to the clear and comprehensive summary on diamond-drilling methods by John Collins. His review of the experience of the last 40 years in this technique is invaluable. As Dr. L. D. Ricketts wrote in 1932, "The principles on which an art is founded are usually few and necessarily basic in nature, but he who wishes to achieve the power to select his aides and give success to important undertakings that may be intrusted to him in the future must ordinarily undergo years of drudgery in order to gain the experience that will enable him to distinguish such fundamentals through the haze of reinforcing detail that clothes and tends to disguise them."[t] Ricketts went on to say that since the beginning of the century there has been much

ROTARY kilns are adaptable to many fuels, but this paper deals principally with the use of powdered coal. The observations and conclusions presented are based on rotary kilns used in the manufacture of basic refractories for steel furnaces. Solid fuels are pulverized for two principal reasons: (I) ease of control, and (2) rapidity of combustion. By the use of pulverized coal, the operator can increase or decrease the fuel supply by small increments and with very little time lag between the change of control and the resultant change in the flame. This is extremely important in this type of furnace, as the temperature range for maturing the clinker is very narrow. By fine grinding, it is possible to increase the rate of burning of the coal, thereby liberating great quantities of heat within a small space in a short time. Under given conditions, temperature is a measure of the heat liberated per unit of time. To attain the temperatures of 2950° to 3150°F., which are encountered in the manufacture of various steel-furnace refractories, it is estimated that it is necessary to liberate 125,000 to I75,000 B.t.u. per cubic foot of the burning zone per hour. The manufacture of dolomitic refractories is a ceramic process and, as is true in most such processes, the material must be subjected to a certain critical temperature for a certain length of time in order to complete the reaction. The cost and the speed of sinking a shaft are factors of so great importance in operating a mine, that the data given in Table I., herewith published, will be of interest and value to all engaged in practical mining; and for this reason the data are communicated for permanent and accessible record in our Transactions. The figures &apos;of cost cover the period from January 1, 1903, to May 31, 1903, during which time the total depth sunk was 858 ft. So far as I know, the cost of sinking per foot (£13,15s., 11.04d.) of a shaft of the dimensions 21 ft. by 6 ft. in hard rock, is the cheapest yet on record; and the speed of 213.5 ft. per month, which was attained during May, 1903, is also the best record for speed in sinking in rock so hard as that of this shaft. During the period from January 1 to May 31, 1903, there were 144 rounds worked, involving 4,032 holes, of a total depth of 28,963 ft. 2.4 in., which is equivalent to an average depth of 7 ft. 2.2 in. per hole bored. These data are of added interest from the fact that the work was done practically by native labor.

IT has been shown1,3 that many observed phenomena related to annealing textures in f.c.c. metals can be adequately accounted for, at least in a qualitative way, by considering the orientation dependence of the boundary mobility, without any hypotheses concerning preferred orientation of nuclei. It was noted1 that this approach is particularly successful in the common cases of primary recrystallization in highly cold-worked polycrys-talline metals, where nuclei occur in great abundance, and that in the other extreme case, where the number of nuclei is very limited, or even only a single crystal is grown, the orientation dependence of boundary mobility has only a small effect, or none at all, on the orientations resulting from annealing. Recently Dunn described examples3-6 where observed secondary recrystallization textures apparently cannot be accounted for on the basis of oriented growth alone, but also require oriented nuclei, or at least the absence of nuclei in certain orientation ranges. In general, the great difficulty in correlating the preferred orientation of recrystallized grains with that of nuclei is inherent in the fact that nuclei are by nature very small, and that they are usually identifiable as "nuclei" only after growth, i.e., after they have already been subject to growth selectivity. An investigation was carried out by Liebmann and Lücke,&apos; and also a very similar one by Graham and Cahn,&apos; to obtain quantitative information on the orientation depend- ence of boundary migration rates in the recrystallization of slightly deformed aluminum single-crystal rods or plates, in which artificially nucleated recrystallized grains of predetermined orientation were grown. Liebmann and Lücke foupd maximum boundary mobility for boundaries across which the misorientation corresponded to a rotation of 40 deg around a common [Ill] axis, in accordance with earlier conclusions.9,1 Also, they confirmed that such an orientation relationship predominates among crystals growing into slightly extended single crystals from presumably random artificial nuclei. On the other hand, Graham and Cahn found no preferred orientation among crystals grown in a similar manner. It is not as yet known how these observations may be reconciled with each other. The view has been expressed in various papers5&apos;10,21 that selective growth based on the orientation dependence of boundary mobility is not in itself sufficient to account for the formation of sharp re-crystallization textures, such as those often observed in highly deformed polycrystalline metals after annealing. The present work was undertaken to ascertain whether or not it is possible to obtain a sharp re-crystallization texture in a case where random nuclei are assuredly present in large numbers. It was previously found1&apos; that high-purity aluminum crystals rolled 80 pct on the (110) plane in the [1T2] direction, when suitable precautions are taken, may be annealed for periods of about 1000 sec at 350°C without recrystallization. It was also found that the reluctance to recrystallize in this case is due to the scarcity of material in sufficiently deviating orientations to serve as nuclei. By using such a matrix,
