It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). Bauxite is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and in the production of a number of useful chemicals as well as of aluminous cement "ciment fondu." An important and growing use is in the manufacture of refractory products. Composition Dana and earlier mineralogists gave the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.21120 and the composition as A1202, 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. A specific mineral of this composition has, however, never been identified by either microscopic, chemical or X ray examination, and therefore it is concluded that bauxite is a rock consisting of one or more aluminum minerals together with impurities. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203. 3H20 (A1203, 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1202, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct) ; diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1203, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mediterranean region in Europe is predominantly boehmite, as in France and Istria, subordinately a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, as in Dalmatia, or of boehmite (or gibbsite) and diaspore, as in Greece. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite, but boehmite in appreciable amount occurs in many places. Corundum (A1202) is not included un¬der bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities in variable amount, including silica in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloy site, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulfide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous, ferruginous, and phosphatic bauxite and siliceous and aluminous iron ores and manganese ores and nickel and chrome laterites. Phosphorus and manganese minerals locally form important impurities in bauxite deposits. Properties Gibbsite is white or light shades of gray, cream or pink. Its hardness is 2.5 to 3.5; specific gravity, 2.3 to 2.4; crystal system, monoclinic, crystals tabular parallel to 001, often fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic; luster, vitreous to pearly; generally translucent; cleavage, parallel to 001; disassociation temperature, approximately 300°C. Boehmite, a relatively new and important mineral described by J. Boehm15 in 1925, confirmed and named by J. de Lapparen64 in 1930, has some properties not yet definitely determined. The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, Ill., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four coyentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade Auorspar.2-3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 19214 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Alines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. INTRODUCTION Relative permeabilities are factual data necessary to any prediction of reservoir production behavior. One important problem in determining relative permeabilities of porous media to gas is the effect of gas slippage on these determinations. Since certain aspects of the slippage phenomenon still remain unknown, this study is particularly concerned with that problem. The validity of the theory of gas slippage as it is applied to the flow of gas through porous media has been well established. 1,2,3 Therefore, in determining the permeabilities of porous media to gas by ordinary laboratory procedure, i.e., at atmospheric pressure, the slippage correction should be considered. Rose3 performed experiments on gas relative permeabilities which indicated that the effect of gas slippage on the measured effective gas permeabilities at various liquid saturations decreased with an increase in liquid saturation. Following Rose, it was substantiated experimentally' that the effective gas permeabilities at the various liquid saturations extrapolated to infinite mean pressure were the same as the non-wetting liquid permeabilities at the same saturations. This same paper also presented data which showed that the magnitude of the slippage between those values of gas effective permeability determined at atmospheric pressure and those found by extrapolation to infinite mean pressure decreased with an increase in liquid saturation. However, these experiments were not performed at liquid saturations above 30 per cent. Therefore, the purpose of this experimental work was to determine the effect of gas slippage on permeability measurements at liquid saturations in excesh of 30 per cent. APPARATUS Five core samples were used In this work: two synthetic Alundum samples (A-1, and A-2). a Nichols Buff sandstone sample (NB-13), and two samples from producing formations, a Soso sandstone (S-1), and a vugu-lar dolomitic limestone (R-7). The core samples ranged in permeability from 32 to 663 md. These cores were chosen because they represented a fairly wide range of permeabilities and probably a considerable difference in pore size and pore size distribution. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus which consists of an air dehydration filter A, two Moore null-matic sub-pressure regulators B and C, the differential oil manometer D, the core holder E, the flowmeter F, the soap reservoir G, and a mercury manometer H measuring the downstream pressure. The interesting features of the apparatus are the two Moore vacuum-pressure regulators. The regulators permit the rapid establishment and easy control during flow at sub-atmospheric pressures of both the differential and downstream pressures, and prevent the surging action of the vacuum pump from disturbing the system during flow. Provided there are no leaks in the system, these regulators will maintain without measurable change selected downstream and differential pressure. Specifically, regulator B controls the downstream pressure and regulator C controls the differential pressure. In opera-

Most minerals have experienced a slow hut perceptible decline in their annual primary production growth over the past hundred years. This decline is due to a combination of factors: (1) increased recycling; (2) exhaustion of the more accessible or higher grade ores; (3) partial substitution; (4) the more efficient use of materials; (5) progressive saturation of markets as living standards rise. Therefore, future demand for new mineral resources will probably be lower than anticipated. As the world population stabilizes, this slowdown in production growth will become even more pronounced.

The operation of gas-condensate fields is comparatively new and involves physical principles with which the industry was not prcviously familiar. It has been necessary to devise methods for testing gas-condensate wells and to correlate laboratory and field data. In this paper new methods are advanced for interpreting well G.P.M.† tests whereby dilution by dry gas can be estimated and information supplied on revaporization of condensates by dry gas. Inaccuracies in well test data are discussed. Changes in flow rates can cause changes in the G.P.M. of the effluent and it may take some time for a well to become stabilized after an important change in flow rate. Retrograde tests as usually conducted cannot be directly compared with field G.P.M. data, because the retrograde tests usually include solution gas in the condensates, which are reported On the cumulative basis whereas field data (G.P.M.) usually report pentaneS PlUS on a rate or instantaneous basis. Introduction Though long known to physicists, the phenomena Of retrograde condensation became known to the oil and gas industry Only in recent years, when deeper drilling disclosed that the behavior of vapors under changing pressures was different in high-pressure reservoirs than under the low-pressure operations with which the industry was familiar. These deep, high-pressure reservoirs in which condensation and vaporization behaved inversely to the accustomed manner became known as "gas-distillate," or preferably "gas-condensate" fields. Partly to prevent precipitation and retention of liquids in the reservoir, but still more to prevent the waste of residue gas, the operation known as "recycling," or preferably "cycling," was instituted, in which the residue gas is reinjected into the reservoir, thus maintaining pressure and driving the wet gas to the producing wells. For lack of field experience to serve as a guide, the industry had to assume that theory and laboratory experiments could accurately forecast retrograde behaviors in operating these gas-condensate fields, but it is obvious that these assumptions should be checked at the first opportunities against actual field experience. To make such checks, it is necessary to accumulate a large quantity of reliable field data, but experience has shown that it is difficult to obtain reliable field data and that the laboratory data as usually presented are not in directly comparable form. The problems of correlation involve the complex phase behavior on the one hand, and a knowledge of field data and a visualization of underground conditions on the other hand. This paper is an approach from field experience, The purposes of this article are to discuss the sources of uncertainty in the data and to present methods of analyzing, interpreting and correlating laboratory and field data. Data mostly from lower Gulf Coast fields are presented, from which some conclusions can be derived, but better data from more sources than those available to the writer will be required before satisfactory answers to many questions can be obtained. This paper is presented to stimulate the analysis and publication of data from other fields, the reexamination of field and laboratory methods, and the taking of more complete and reliable field tests. For these purposes, the writer presents some speculations that otherwise would not be appropriate.

Electric furnace installation and tough-pitch copper-casting operation at Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. are described. General layout, power supply and control, refractories, induction pour hearth, casting equipment, metal temperature control, and oxygen-content control are discussed. E LECTRIC furnace at Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. was put into operation in August 1949. The installation was designed primarily to melt electrolytic copper cathodes and to produce vertically cast tough-pitch shapes. To meet emergencies during reverberatory furnace shut-downs, provision was made for casting horizontal tough-pitch wire bars. Due to the ease with which metal temperatures, melting rates, oxygen content, and casting hours can be altered to suit production demands, the electric furnace has met the requirements admirably. General Layout The plant has been described by H. S. McKnight' and by J. H. Schloen and E. M. Elkin.2 Since these papers were written, the electric furnace has been installed in a 140 ft extension of the original casting building. The extension, 264 ft in width, is divided into one 24 ft and four 60 ft bays, each a continuation of similar bays in the older building. Fig. l, a partial floor plan of the extension, shows the location of major equipment. Power Supply and Control Power for the electric furnace and its auxiliary equipment is delivered by Quebec Hydro over two 12 kv three-phase, 60 cycle pole lines. One line is in use, while the second serves as an emergency standby. Connections for the electric furnace from these lines, which also feed the refinery power house, are made to a substation on Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. property. Connections between this substation and the furnace transformer room are in underground conduit. The are-furnace transformer, 550 v auxiliary-equipment transformer, and 12 kv switchgear are in the transformer room near the furnace. Stepdown from 12 kv to are-furnace voltages is done by a 7500 kva oil-immersed water-cooled three-phase 60 cycle transformer. This unusually high kva rating is available because the arc furnace and transformer were adapted from a steel-melting unit. Secondary voltages are available in 16 steps between 251 and 95 v (across phases). A four-position tap changer, operated from the furnace switchboard is connected to taps yielding 199, 164.5, 127, and 115 v, respectively. The transformer primary feeder is equipped with a General Electric Magne-Blast circuit breaker. The pour hearth, casting wheel, bosh conveyor, and other auxiliary equipment are fed by a 12 kv to 550 v, 750 kva three-phase 60 cycle transformer. Graphite electrodes, 14 in., with tapered nipples are held in the are-furnace electrode arms with steel wedges. The arms, fed from the transformer secondary busbars by flexible cable bundles, are actuated by winch cables. Direct-current motors operating the winches are supplied by a 250 v motor-generator set. Power input to the furnace is controlled from the furnace switchboard. The board has the usual combination of remote controls for the 12 kv breaker and transformer tap changer, meters, overload relays, automatic and manual electrode motion controls, switchgear, etc. When power is on the furnace, automatic electrode feed is used; the power draw on a given voltage tap then is governed by current-limiting rheostats. The rheostats work through a Westinghouse bal-lanced-beam control circuit which, in turn, operates reversing contactors in the winch motor circuits. Arc Furnace The arc furnace is a standard-type NT Pittsburgh 'Lectromelt with inside shell diameter 12 ft 3¾ in. By hydraulic-lift cylinders, the furnace can be tilted forward to 39 ½ ° and backward to 5" from horizontal. A roof-swing cylinder is also installed but not used. Fig. 2 shows refractory-lining details. With the lining as shown, operating life between repairs is 6 to 9 months of two-shift casting operation. Charge slot, skim door, and roof refractories then are replaced completely, and any necessary repairs made to side walls. Bottom life is longer and the original under courses are still in service, while the top course was replaced in October 1951. The launder is lined with high chrome-magnesite trough brick backed by fireclay and insulating brick. The trough is covered with fireclay brick and asbestos sheet. IN a previous communications the improvement in strength, harden-ability and color, occasioned by replacing gold in a typical gold-silver-copper alloy by various amounts of platinum, or palladium, was discussed. In the present paper the results of further studies upon the constitution and the nature of the hardening transformation in these alloys are pre-sented. This research may be summarized as follows: 1. The liquidus and solidus have been determined for the alloys of the palladium and platinum series. Cooling curves were utilized for deter-mining the liquidus of the palladium alloys but this method proved unsuitable for the platinum alloys so that a, novel quenching method was utilized for the latter. Both the liquidus and solidus of the palladium alloys increase steadily with the palladium content. The liquidus of the platinum alloys increases rapidly with the platinum content, while the solidus temperature increases with the platinum content up to about 14 atomic per cent platinum, but suffers no further increase with additional increments of platinum up to 20 atomic per cent at least, owing to a peritectic reaction. 2. Palladium, and even more effectively platinum, reduces the rate of grain growth. Owing to this fact and to the increase in the solidus temperature, "overheating" does little or no damage to alloys containing reasonable quantities of these elements. This is confirmed both by tensile tests and metallographic examination. 3. The excess phase present in one of the high-platinum-content alloys has been isolated and chemically analyzed and was found to consist almost wholly of platinum, gold, and copper, evidently derived from the compound AuCu, by the partial replacement of gold by platinum.

IN ingots of silicon-killed carbon steel made without addition of - aluminum, transparent spherical or nearly spherical inclusions, up to about 0.15-mm diameter, are generally present. They may be glassy or crystallized, wholly or partially. In steels of high carbon contents they consist of silica,4,12 in steels of lower carbon contents arid, in consequence, higher oxygen contents, of iron-manganese-silicate with higher iron and manganese contents the lower the carbon content. Small silicate inclusions, about 0.01 mm or smaller, may occur, just as sulphide inclusions do, in portions that have been the last or nearly the last to freeze,10,12,17 this location being verified by primary etching.10 Hence, it may be concluded that they have separated from liquid steel that has become enriched in oxygen through segregation during freezing. Silicate inclusions with a diameter larger than about 0.02 mm appear, at least in ingots of moderate size, to be distributed at random in relation to the primary structure and therefore may be assumed to have existed as droplets in the liquid steel before freezing started at the point in question. The average size of such large inclusions has been found to increase toward the axis17 and their amount to increase from the top downward in the axial region .2,10 It has been assumed that this accumulation is a result of the droplets being brought down by the slowly settling metal crystals.2 It has been suggested that large silicate inclusions generally form,6 or may form," by coagulation of smaller ones, or by small drops being caught by larger ones during the rising of the latter.9 The occasional occurrence of a large inclusion surrounded by a swarm of small ones has been taken as a proof of this mechanism but, as suggested later, may be explained in another way. It has been pointed out that an inclusion droplet in the liquid steel may grow at the expense of an adjacent one, which implies diffusion of soluble inclusion-forming elements in the liquid steel.15 Further, it has been pointed out that, on cooling in ladle or mold, the metal-silicate equilibrium is displaced in the direction of separation of silicate. Thus inclusions may grow in size and amount.2,3,8,12,13,17,19,20 The exposure of the liquid steel to the oxygen of the air during tapping and pouring, and the consequent reaction, has been mentioned as a source of the formation of inclusions19,20 but this possibility has not received particular attention. Further, the admixture of furnace slag during tapping' or of refractory material from various sources1,20 has been considered. The inclusions due to the latter may be recognized, however, through their resistance to hydrofluoric acid, imparted by the alumina content. A series of Al-Cu alloys has been cast from constant superheat to solidify either with a hot top or with a free liquid/air interface. All the other variables which affect relative fluid motions were kept constant except the imposition of slow rotations m oscillations of the mold. Depending upon the exact circumstances, evi-dence could be found for the nucleation of equiaxed grains from dendrite bits detached from the columnar zone, or from the free surface, or from solid bits induced at pouring; a special experiment showed the solute buildup during ingot solidification and by inference the reality of constitutional supercooling. All methods of grain nucleation are thus supported. When solidification is arranged in a static mold the columnar- to-equiaxed transition occurs by one of these nucleation paths, subject to the natural decay of temperature gradients which promotes nucleation or the survival of nuclei. But when solidification is forced under special fluid flows it may display odd transitions. In one of these the equiaxed zone is synihesized from. dendrite bits detached from the solid/liquid interface. These survive under the concurrent lowering of temperature gradients and eventually cause transition by impeding columnar growth. GRAIN structure control is desired because real experience shows that specific properties are associated with specific cast grain structures. But since control is thus a matter of need and does not require understanding, much of casting remains art. For example, the manipulation of relative fluid motions in simple ingots provides a control of grain structure development,1-4 but theoretical insight is not required in order to broaden its potential applicability. Fortunately, however, once a variable like fluid flow is recognized it can also provide paths toward new insight. New observations using this variable have provided an insight which is curious. All the theories or descriptions of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) seem to be supported as long as the appropriate experiment is carried out. In order to develop this idea, let us ignore segregation, the chill zone (until a later section of this paper), and the origin and development of the columnar zone.= The details of questioning how equiaxed material forms in a casting may be divided in two. The first part is simply a questioning of the origin for equi-axed grains: are there fresh nuclei from heterogeneous nucleation, or dendrite bits broken off or melted from the columnar zone or elsewhere,6 or other solid bits surviving from the outset of freezing? The second is more complex, a questioning of the CET: does columnar growth slow down and allow the dominance of equiaxed grains, however they are formed, or do equi-axed grains take over and force columnar growth to stop? This "chicken-or-the-egg" second question can be quite useful, especially because it allows us to delineate the ordinary or NATURAL EQUIAXED ZONE and the induced or SYNTHETIC EQUIAXED ZONE. A natural equiaxed zone occurs if solidification proceeds in the absence of disturbances or extraneous forces such as ultrasonics, stirrings, and so forth. Both the CET theory proposed by Winegard and Chal-mers, 7requiring constitutional supercooling, and the CET theory suggested by Chalmers,8 requiring nuclea-tion only on pouring, pertain to the natural equiaxed zone. The best collating evidence to date for both these theories is contained in the work by Biloni and Chal-mers;9,10 the former theory7 is supported by special versions of the unidirectional growth experiment performed by Plaskett and winegardl1 and the latter theory' is supported in detail for the solidification of small ingots. An equiaxed zone can be synthesized when disturbances caused by forced fluid flows2-4 or other artificial means9,10 break off or melt off dendrite tips from an advancing solid/liquid interface,* if (and only if) temperature gradients in the melt are (forcibly) reduced enough to ensure the survival of these bits of dendrites, 2'3 Willful disturbances even so trivial as those produced by rapping a mold might be included here; as will be shown for example, this follows Southin's suggestion that the free liquid/air interface

The study of the influence of fluid mobilities on the sweepout pattern resulting from the injection of gas or water has been extended to cover the production period which follows breakthrough of the injected material. Mobility ratios over the range common in field operations (0.1 to 17) were studied for several pattern floods (five-spot, staggered, and direct line drive). The experimental data required for these studies were obtained by the use of the x-ray shadowgraph technique using miscible oil phases of different viscosities in porous plate mode1s of a reservoir element. From the shadowgraph pictures obtained before and after breakthrough of the injected fluid, flowing ratios at the producing well and cumulative volumes injected were calculated. The method for applying such data in predicting field behavior is illustrated for a water flood of a five-spot. For this case a range of mobility ratios of 0.5 to 5.0 results in: (I) nearly complete (95 to 100 per cent) sweepout pattern efficiencies at abandonment conditions, (2) production after breakthrough being responsible for as much as one-third of the total recovery at the lower mobility ratios, and (3) a twofold variation in the operating life of the reservoir. In determining the merits of a secondary recovery operation, the fraction of the reservoir which is ultimately to be swept by the injected fluid is of major importance. Because of its significance a large amount of research has been applied to the study of areal sweepout efficiency. Muskat, Wyckoff and Botset1,2 have presented the classic analysis of the pattern efficiency at breakthrough for several injection patterns in which the mobility of the fluids ahead of the injected phase front was equal to the mobility of the fluids behind the front. Aronofsky3 as extended this analysis of recovery at breakthrough through numerical computations and by the stepwise use of the potentiometric model to include the effect of different fluid mobilities ahead of and behind the invasion front on the line drive performance. Fay and Prats' have also employed numerical computations to show the influence of one other condition of fluid mobilities on the five spot flood. In a previous paper' a new method of attack on this problem which employed x-ray and porous plates was described. At that time experimental results were also presented which described the effect of fluid mobilities on the reservoir area contacted by the injected fluid at breakthrough for the five spot and direct line drive patterns. Most of the literature pertaining to sweepout pattern efficiency has emphasized the pattern which is obtained at breakthrough of the injected phase. THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concern-ing the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chal-cography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater.
