There are two types of shovels currently used primarily as mining tools-the stripping shovel and the quarry-mine (Q-M) shovel. The two types have basically the same features, the main difference being in size. The stripping units are giant four-crawler shovels that operate by placing overburden alongside in a mined-out area. The Q-M units, on the other hand, are two-crawler shovels that usually load into trucks or trains. Powering Systems A typical stripping or Q-M shovel is fully electric, receiving power through a trailing cable that is connected to a large motor-generator set with multiple generators. In the full Ward-Leonard system, each generator furnishes d-c power to separate motors which drive the mechanisms for the principal motions of the shovel-hoist, crowd and swing.

RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. IT is well known that iron markedly improves the physical properties and casting characteristics of aluminum bronzes. The use of 1 to 4 per cent iron as the principal modifying addition has become common practice in many foundries melting aluminum bronzes. Although the beneficial effects of iron are unquestioned, there is some uncertainty regarding the structural changes caused by it in the basic copper-alumi-num system. It is agreed that a new constituent appears in abundance when the iron content reaches 2 to 4 per cent. This constituent, which frequently occurs in shapes resembling clover leaves, is sometimes assumed to be an aluminum-iron intermetallic compound. If this were correct we might expect a change in the structural relationships of the matrix in the direction of decreased aluminum content. On the other hand, it has been reported that iron has a negligible effect in altering the fundamental relationships of copper-aluminum alloys1. Others2,3 have reported an additive coefficient. Apparently it will be necessary to know the equilibrium relationships between the phases of the copper-aluminum-iron alloy system to establish any such theory as fact. When this has been done it may very well be that a further revision in the structural relationships may be necessary to describe the changes to be expected in commercial cast alloys. YEARS of experience and research have shown that molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium are among the most useful and effective elements in augmenting the high-temperature strength of heat-treatable, ferritic steels. Grün, for example, in conducting an early survey of the strengthening effects of various elements in annealed, low-carbon steel at 750° and 930°F (400° and 500°C), found molybdenum and vanadium to be the most effective.' Holtmann comprehensively studied the strengthening effects of molybdenum and vanadium in quenched and tempered steels at 930°F as a function of microstructure and carbon content.' He found creep strength to be related to the saturation of the austenite at the austenitizing temperature, such that strength is increased by alloying until the y loop is reached—the terminus of complete austenitization. Beyond this degree of alloying, the inability to heat treat will result in lower strength, at least for low and moderate creep temperatures. Tungsten, owing to higher cost than molybdenum, has been little used in ferritic high-temperature steels. As a result, very few investigations have been made of its high-temperature strengthening ability, and reliable data on its effectiveness are not available. Grün rated tungsten far less effective than molybdenum at 930°F (500°C) on a weight-percentage basis.' However, Tammann has found that tungsten is as effective as molybdenum in raising the recrystallization temperature of iron. For this reason Smith, in a review of the subject, has advocated a re-examination of the influence of tungsten on the high-temperature strength of steel.' In any study of the effects of alloying additions on high-temperature properties, recognition must be made of the many variables involved, some of which can be controlled but have been ignored in innumerable investigations of the past, and some of which are difficult or even impossible to control. One cannot, for example, assign a definite strengthening index to any one alloying element, for this will be dependent upon the microstructure (heat treatment and mechanical treatment), testing con- ditions (temperature, time, and stress), and the complete composition of the steel (accompanying alloying elements, impurities, etc.). One ever-appear ing variable, hardness or tensile strength at room temperature, may be eliminated by heat treating all of the alloys to a single hardness level. An attempt may be made to control the variable of primary quenched structure by oil or water quenching the test specimen. The control of such variables may not be possible in cases of widely varying compositions, but at least such deviations should be recognized. Material and Procedure The alloys, made as 30-lb ingots in an induction furnace, all had the same base composition of about 0.18 pct C, 0.85 pct Mn, and 0.48 pct Si. They were grouped as follows: Mo Group—Containing up to 5.2 pct Mo. W Group-Containing up to 6.0 pct W. V Group—Containing up to 3.3 pct V. Mo-V Group—Containing up to 2.7 pct Mo and up to 1.4 pct V. Mo-W Group—Containing up to 2.5 pct Mo and up to 2.5 pct W. The steels, listed in Table I, were forged to ¾ in. sq bars and the material for the high-temperature, rupture-test specimens was further swaged to %-in. round bars.

R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

A determination of feasibility of a new surface mining project requires a study in orderly fashion through the procedures outlined in Section 2 and the previous two chapters of this section. The information and data collected as described in Chapters 3.1 and 3.2 must be correlated, and the many variables that affect the venture must be reviewed. This review will furnish the mining engineer with the information required to make a preliminary evaluation of estimated profit in the venture. It is at this time that management must make yet another decision whether to drop or continue the project. 3.3-1. Maps. For the purpose of collecting, outlining, and correlating a large portion of the data required for a surface mining feasibility study, maps are essential. A map to a mining engineer is like a sheet of music to a musician, or a blueprint to a designer. It provides a pictorial method of presenting mining information not only for practical application in estimating and planning, but also for demonstration of physical relationships to those charged with decision-making responsibilities. GENERAL AREA MAP. The first step in the process of graphic information assembly is the preparation of a "small scale" general area map. Such a map may cover a mining district, a market area, a watershed area or district, or the whole or a section of a geologic feature such as an iron formation or coal seam. An example of such a general area map is shown in Fig. 3.3-la which outlines the various coal mining areas in the vicinity of a proposed "mine-mouth" power station, the Liddell Power Station Project. If Quadrangle Maps of the United States Geological Survey, or their equivalent, are available for an area, a common and very effective technique is to superimpose mining data on these maps, either directly or by means of transparent overlays. The effects of methods of crystal growing, wafer sawing, polishing, routine handling, diffusion, and epitaxial growth on the defects in GaAs are reviewed and studied using reflection and transmission X-ray topographic techniques. In general, it was found that boat-grown crystals exhibited fewer defects than Czochralski crystals, although all crystals showed large numbers of precipitates visible when examined in the electron microscope. Mechanical surface treatments such as sawing and mechanical polishing introduce damage to a depth of about 5 µ, most of which can be removed by suitable chemical or chem-mechanical polishing. In addition, defects can be introduced through routine handling of wafers, for example with metallic tweezers. These defects can be quite severe, and have been observed 20 µ below the wafer surface. Defects can also be introduced through diffusion and epitaxial growth. These defects, which include precipitates, growth pyramids, stacking faults, dislocations, and so forth, can be detrimental to device fabrication. It is shown that wafers or films which appear defect-free optically can contain defects visible in the X-ray topographs. WHILE the use of GaAs in the semiconductor industry has increased very rapidly in the last few years, due mainly to the recent development of many important GaAs devices,1,2 the major limit to the production of commercial quantities of many GaAs devices remains a severe lack of suitable materials technology. This lack is apparent in two critical areas. First, production quantities of high-quality GaAs crystals, reproducibly doped and precipitate-free, simply are not available commercially, although some reasonable quality material is available on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Second, in comparison to silicon technology, little is known about the effects of processing variables on the defects either present in as-grown GaAs or introduced through processing and handling of wafers. These areas are now receiving some attention from semiconductor device manufacturers, who are studying defects in GaAs in order to better understand how either to prevent their occurrence or to cope with their existence. Most investigations of the defects in GaAs have been made by optical microscopy3-5 or transmission electron microscopy techniques.'-' Recently, however, the imaging techniques of X-ray topography, electron mi-croprobe analysis, and scanning electron microscopy are being applied to the study of GaAs.9-14 In the case of X-ray topography, a one-to-one image is obtained that must be photographically enlarged. In compensa- tion, the defects within entire wafers may be imaged by simple scanning (Lang technique15) if the wafer is reasonably perfect, or by using the scan oscillation technique developed by Schwuttke16 if the wafer is warped or distorted. The purpose of this paper is to both review and extend the general application of X-ray topographic techniques to GaAs. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of growth and process variables on the quality and perfection of both bulk and epitaxial GaAs. Reference to optical or electron microscopy results will be made when useful. Since the effects on defects of a wide variety of processing variables such as crystal growing, sawing, polishing, diffusion, and epitaxial growth will be somewhat superficially reviewed, a fairly extensive bibliography of the most important recent results in these areas is included. However, for completeness, important defects will be illustrated here, although such defects have been previously shown by others. While this paper is concerned with defects rather than with the physics of X-ray scattering, the mechanisms of contrast formation in the topographs will of necessity be briefly mentioned. EXPERIMENTAL GaAs crystals, both boat-grown18 and Czochralski-grown,'8 containing a variety of dopants of various concentrations, were purchased from outside vendors. Wafers were sliced from the crystals using a Hamco ID saw and were mechanically polished using 1 µ diamond paste. Chem-mechanical polishing was done in bromine-methanol as described by Sullivan and Kolb.18 Chemical polishing was done using a modified sulfuric-peroxide solution, 11 parts H2SO4, 1 part 30 pct H2O2, 1 part DI water.5 Zinc diffusion was carried out in a closed tube, using a 10 pct Zn-In source at 825°C for 1 hr. Oxide masking techniques were used to select the area to be diffused. Epitaxial wafers were either purchased or prepared here. All epitaxial runs prepared here were carried out using a Ga-GaAs-AsC13 source in a closed tube at a substrate temperature of 750°C. Wafers were chem-mechanically polished and gas-etched prior to deposition. The X-ray topographs were taken on a Krystallos Lang camera, operating in the transmission scanning geometry (Lang technique15) or in the reflection scanning geometry (modified Berg-Barrett technique20,21). MoKa, radiation was used for all transmission topographs using a Jarrell-Ash 100-µ spot focus. CuKal radiation was used for all reflection topographs using a General Electric CA-7 1-mm spot focus X- ray tube. Topographs were printed from an intermediate contrast inversion film, so the contrast shown in all figures here is the same as that of the original 50-µ-thick emulsion L4 Iiford nuclear plate used to record the topograph.

Using published surface-diffusion (D,) data and published sintering equations, it is shouln that surface difusion should dominate the neck-growth stage of intering for all materials in which D, has been measured (six metals and A1as). Also, grain boundary diffusion can be expected to contribute appreciably to shrinkage and possibly to neck growth below some critical temperature of the order of 70 pct 01- the absolute melting temperatuve. In view of the widespread conclusion in previous sintering work that volume diffusion dowzinates neck gvowth, experiments were conducted using spherical copper powders to test this conclusion. Scaling studies on neck growth at 950°and 1020°C clearly demonstrated that suyface diffusion dorninates. Kinetic studies on shrinkage gave more equivocal results that indicated an increasing role of' grain boundary transport at lower temperatures. Five diarszeters from 100 to 300 u were used in the scaling sludy and a temperature range of -650' 10 950 C was covered in the shrinkage studies. All experiments were conducted in dvy hydrogen. In 1949, Kuczynski published his now classic paper on the determination of the transport mechanism in sintering from the time laws of neck growth. In the interim, these laws have been applied to many systems and slightly modified by several authors. Essentially all these authors concluded that, for crystal- line materials, the dominant transport mechanism in neck growth is volume diffusion. This stems from the observation that the neck radius increases about as t"5 and that the activation energy approximates that for lattice diffusion. A related but independent series of studies stems from Mullins' rigorous analysis of the growth of the groove formed where a grain boundary meets a free surface." xperimental work stemming from this analysis has shown that for each crystalline material studied (Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe, Pt, Al2O3) surface diffusion was clearly the dominant transport mechanism for groove widths up to the order 10 to 20 p. The ratio of the quantity of material being carried by lattice diffusion to that carried by surface diffusion increases linearly with the groove width, so surface diffusion is dominant for all widths under 10 to 20 u. The analysis of the relative contributions of surface and volume diffusion to grain boundary grooving, and to neck growth in sintering, shows that they are quite similar. Thus, using the available surface-diffusion data and the approximate equations of Kuczynski, or the more rigorous recent equations of Nichols and Mullins, 3 it can be shown that the small necks between particles must grow almost entirely by surface diffusion. The purpose of this study was to re-examine the basis for the conclusion that the neck-growth stage of sintering proceeds by volume diffusion. Using spherical copper powders, of several different diameters, precise experimental measurements were made of both neck growth and shrinkage. Application of Herring's scaling laws to the neck-growth data clearly indicated that neck growth occurred by surface transport, even though the neck radius increased as or Using the recent analysis of Mullins and Nichols as well as published data on surface diffusion, it is shown that the observed time law, as well as actual rate of neck growth, can be satisfactorily explained by a surface-diffusion mechanism.

This paper deals with basic physical phenomena, which when combined and interpreted, lead to the same mathematical equations that describe comminution phenomena. Thus, a physical model is described that corresponds to the mathematical model presented in the writer's previous papers. '12 In the mathematical model, the energy consumed in breakage is related to the volume or weight of material broken and the size of particles broken. The equation E=2.303 Ck-a log x1/x2 was derived by multiplying the volume or weight of each size in an ideal Gates-Gaudin-Schumann size distribution by an energy factor. The product of these two factors gives the energy distribution among the different sizes in a single size distribution. The energy of breakage of a specific constant weight of one size distribution to another size distribution is given by the equation E = constant/kn-1. In this case, where the volume or weight is constant, the energy is proportional to the size factor 1/kn-1. In what follows, a physical theory will be presented showing that the energy consumed in comminution is proportional to the volume or weight of the material broken and to the reciprocal of the size of this material raised to a constant exponent. THE VOLUME FACTOR The atomic theory of matter reveals that in solids, atoms or ions are arranged so as to be in equilibrium at specific distances from one another. Although the atoms or ions are oscillating, there is a definite determinable mean distance between them and this distance is a balance between repulsive and attractive electrical forces. It therefore requires force to separate the atoms or ions and when an outside force is applied, it first produces strain in increasing the distance between the atoms or ions. This strain increases to the breakage limit on application of sufficient force. In brittle materials, there is negligible plasticity and when an elastic limit is exceeded, breakage takes place. The work done is the force applied per unit area times the cross sectional area of the ideal particle multiplied by the maximum strain per unit length at right angles to the area times the length of the particle. Thus the work done is proportional to the area times the length, which is equivalent to the volume of the ideal particle. If more than one feed particle is considered broken, each particle must be subjected to sufficient strain so that the breakage limit of its contained atoms or ions is reached in order for the particle to be broken. Thus, the energy of breakage is proportional to the total volume of the particles broken. If the particles are of different sizes, the size factor must be included to get a correct determination of energy of breakage. In the preceding, it has been assumed that there is a constant binding force between the atoms throughout the volume being strained. This, of course, is not true. It is known that there are many irregularities in the structure of matter and the binding force differs markedly in different portions. But the differences are only discernible by examining extremely small subdivisions of matter. In one order of magnitude of volume, cracks can be discerned separately from non-cracked neighboring material. In a smaller subdivision of volume, lattice dislocations can be isolated. When these situations are brought into focus, mechanisms of their behavior can be learned, leading to a fuller understanding of phenomena that occur in larger scale subdivisions of matter. Very often, however, the mechanisms that operate in small scale subdivisions have negligible effect in those of large scale, and there still is a place for deriving a mechanism for large scale conditions. The quantum theory is extremely valuable for use with photons and electrons, but is of negligible use with ordinary atoms and molecules. This paper deals with relatively large scale subdivisions of volume present in comminution phenomena. Hence, the effects of cracks, lattice dislocations, misplaced atoms, etc., are smoothed out in an average, constant for each relatively large subdivision of volume. This attitude is supported by experience. If two 10 cc samples of the same ore were ground identically, the same product would be obtained. However, if two samples, each a cubic micron, were conceived to be broken, then one sample might contain a crack and the other not, hence a different product would be obtained. Using a new dternating-current potentiometer circuit and a specially designed four-terminal cell, the specific conductance of molten Cu2S-FeS mattes was measured as a function of temperature, from the liquidus to 1500°C, over the complete range of composition. The high conductivities, about 1500 ohm-I cm-l for FeS and 100 ohm-l cm-l for Cu,S, indicate that the conduction is electronic rather than ionic. Molten FeS has a negative temperature coefficient of specific conductance, resembling metallic conduction. Molten Cu,S has a positive temperature coefficient, resembling semiconduction. The binary roughly follows an additive rule of mixtures with respect to both magnitude and temperature coefficient of specific conductance. Metallic bonding in the liquid is postulated to explain these phenomena. MUCH has been learned in the past about the nature of liquids and the ionic or molecular species in solution by means of electrical measurements. Thus, dielectric constants','2 have given information about molecular liquids such as water and benzene. Measurements of dielectric constant usually are impossible in electrically conducting liquids, such as aqueous solutions of ionic salts and molten ionic salts. However, measurements of electrical conductance and ionic transference have provided much knowledge about the latter systems.a-" In recent years, the ionic nature of certain molten metallurgical slags has been established by Derge and Martin7 through electrical conductance and electrolysis measurements. Chipman, Inouye, and Tom-linsonq ave studied the electrical conductance of molten FeO and report a high specific conductance of about 200 ohm-' cm-' (compared with 4 ohm" cm-' for an ordinary ionic liquid such as molten NaCl) and a positive temperature coefficient of conductance. They interpret these results in terms of p-type semiconduction by analogy to the situation in solid FeO.Y imnad and Derge" have studied cell efficiency in the electrolysis of molten FeO-SiO, systems and conclude that ordinary ionic conductance increases with SiO, content. Very recently, interest has been revived in the electrical conductance of liquid metals and liquid metallic solutions. Scala and Robertson1' report a close resemblance between the liquid and solid states with respect to thermal, structural, and compositional relationships. Molten sulphides have not received a great deal of attention. Bornemann and von Rauschenplat" measured the specific conductance of molten Cu2S as a function of temperature with a four-terminal cell using direct current. A high specific conductance and a positive temperature coefficient were found in that investigation." Using a two-electrode apparatus, Savelsberg" electrolyzed various molten sulphide mixtures. He concluded that pure molten Cu,S and FeS were electronic conductors but that the mixtures exhibited some ionic conduction. In the present investigation, the specific conductance of the industrially important Cu-Fe sulphide mattes was measured as a function of temperature and composition in order to investigate the mode of electrical conduction and the structure of these molten mattes. An alternating-current circuit was used to eliminate the effect of any possible electrode reactions. Apparatus The Conductance Cell: Due to the high specific conductance of the systems studied (10' to 10" ohm-' cm-'), the classical two-terminal cell and Wheat-stone bridge apparatus could not be used. A four-terminal cell was developed in order to eliminate lead resistance, and an ac potentiometer circuit was designed to give rapid and sufficiently accurate measurements of the cell resistance. A diagram of the conductivity cell is given in Fig. 1. The molten matte is contained in a dense alundum crucible, and spectrographic graphite rods that dip into the molten matte serve as the four conductance terminals. Two of the graphite rods on opposite sides of the cell serve as current-carrying leads, and the other two graphite rods are null-current probes that detect the potential drop across the cell. These graphite rods are contained in silica tubes, and the lower constricted portions of the two silica tubes define the column of liquid whose electrical resistance is being measured. In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (I) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is grealer the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this diflerence in depth of deoxidation is thai, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much more rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900" C.; that is, deoxidaion is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide presenx in the copper. In 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. An approximate analysis of this gas is: Hydrogen 38 per cent., carbon monoxide 30 per cent., illuminants 13 per cent., methane 10 per cent., ethane 3 per cent., carbon dioxide 3 per cent., nitrogen 2 per cent., oxygen 0.4 per cent. THE investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors' knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelens1 determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. .According, to this diagram, the liquids represents the separation of TiAl4 (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examination of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,2 reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiAl3 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. In order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and. abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chip-man,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic ope), hearth—the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO2-SiOz-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemis- try of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, SiO2, FeO, Fe2O3, P2O6, MnO, Al2O3 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. Review of Literature Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Krings,4 von Samson-Himmelstjerna,6 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. The writer has been interested for some time in trying to appraise our industry's prospects for gasoline consumption over the next half dozen years or so. Anyone who has even approached the problem knows the intimate relationship to it of the number of automobiles in use— by automobiles I mean both passenger cars and trucks. Probably at least 90 per cent of our gasoline is used in automotive vehicles. Few of us in the oil industry needed to give much attention to the detailed figures, although the automobile industry seemed to interest itself in all sorts of calculations of replacement demand vs. new car demand, the average life of the car, the number scrapped, and the like. Probably many people in the oil industry, as well as outside it, were surprised at the way in which automobile registrations and gasoline consumption held up during the early years of the depression. Large-scale sand consolidation tests were conducted in an effort to determine the reasons for the successes and failures of this method of sand control. Several different consolidating materials were used in treating both clean and bentonitic sands that were packed in a chamber having a capacity of 3.3 cu ft. The results were essentially the same for all of the different consolidating materials, The data show that low-viscosity consolidating materials pumped at a relatively slow rate gave the best results. Where the formation has produced sand, the treating fluids can compress the formation, thus permitting the channeling of fluids to another horizon. Pressure-packing these zones before attempting to consolidate is recommended. Sands containing more than 4 per cent of water-swelling clays are not good candidates for consolidation. It is indicated that loose sand, particularly when it is bentonitic, can be fractured during the placement of the treating fluids. INTRODUCTION Sand production in oil and gas wells has plagued the industry for many years, and numerous cures for this problem have been suggested. Most methods have been successful to a certain degree, but the great variety of well conditions that exist in the different areas has magni- fied the problem and limited the successful use of the various systems. Four review papers1-4 present a wealth of information concerning the degrees of success that have been obtained by the different sand-control methods. The bridging of sand grains by the use of gravel packs and screens has been quite successful. However, these methods do not leave the casing clear for all types of multiple completions, and the cure does not last for the production life of the well in some instance:;. The control of loose sands by sand consolidation with resins has never been as successful as desired. It has always been hoped that such a treatment would eliminate all sand problems for the life of the well, but. initial applications, starting in the middle 1940's, were only moderately successful. Lott, et a1,3 reported a success ratio of approximately 50 per cent and made the following conclusions. The highest percentage of successes were obtained where: a. Consolidation of a zone was made at the time of initial completion or prior to the production of sand. b. The interval treated was less than 12 ft in length. c. Between 30 and 50 gill plastic/ft of producing interval was displaced through the perforations. REASONS FOR SAND CONSOLIDATION FAILURES Our own experiences in the field of sand consolidation point toward the following conditions as the major reasons for the failure of sand consolidation attempts. 1. Mud-plugged perforations and mud invasion of the formation. 2. Sand in the casing covering all or part of the perforations. This sand could be either formation sand or one of the coarser sands used as propping agents in hydraulic fracturing. 3. Holes in the casing. 4. Channels behind the casing. 5. Attempting to treat too long a perforated section. 6. Too high a percentage of water-swelling clays in the formation. 7. Formations that have produced sand. Recent attempts were made to treat perforated sections ranging from 10 to 30 ft, in wells that have produced sand, by using a straddle packer that was raised and lowered through the perforations as the consolidating material was being pumped. In most instances, the pressure required to pump fluid into the formation varied considerably as the tool was raised and lowered. This suggested the possibility that significant differences in permeability were present or that only part of the formation had produced sand. There were times when a sudden break in pressure indicated that a fracture was being formed. Research conducted several years ago concerning the problem of the control of water in air and gas drilling indicated that shale sections could be fractured quite easily. In addition, it was determined that it was easier to pump fluids into shale bodies by fracturing the shale itself, or the interface between the shale and sand, than to pump into a fluid-saturated formation. Formations that produce sand are usually adjacent to shale bodies and frequently have shale streaks of various thicknesses inter-bedded in the sand. A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. The projections H afford a grip for twisting when the two parts tend to stick together. The position of the sample in mercury is shown by I, and in other liquids by M.
