The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format'ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys. Most previous work on sedimentation of coal1 and mineral2,3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer,4 shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-division line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions.

AT the Tulsa meeting of the A. P. I., the following reso-lutions, expressive of the policy of that organization, were among those adopted: RESOLVED, That we endorse the conclusion of the Federal Oil Conservation Board in its report of September, 1926, that the prevention of the waste of gas incident to the pro-duction of oil is of paramount importance in the conserva-tion and economical production of oil, and the president of the Institute is requested to appoint a committee of seven to devise and suggest to this board, or the executive com-mittee, such measures as will enable the industry, while continuing to meet the consumption requirements for pe-troleum and its products, to conserve in its natural state such reserves of petroleum as may not then be required for consumption. RESOLVED, That the president of the Institute appoint a committee of seven to formulate and recommend to this board or its executive committee, at the earliest practicable date, a program of legislation; Federal and State, to be advocated by the Institute giving sanction and effect to agreements by oil producers for the curtailment of produc-tion in pools where and during periods when there is over-production, having for their purpose the economical and orderly production of oil.

A number of cases of low-temperature, intergranu2ar brittle fracture of metals containing small amounts of certain impurities, have now been identified. Some degree of understanding of this phenomenon exists for the simpler binary systems of a metal and a single impurity, but the profound effects of other impurities and alloying elements in modifying this type of behavior remain unexplained. Current research in this area is reviewed and some of the newer techniques of investigation which should make possible a more quantitative study of the structure and composition of grain boundaries in impure metals are described. To indicate the subject matter of this lecture, we may begin by reviewing the experimental observations concerning low-temperature intergranular brittleness in impure metals, particularly those examples in which the embrittlement appears to result from what has been called "equilibrium grain boundary segregation."' These are the systems in which it has been impossible, at least up to now, to detect the presence of any second phase film at the brittle interfaces. When second phase films are present they are usually readily detectable by fractographic methods, often appearing as epitaxial films in geometric or dendritic patterns. An example is shown in Fig. 1 for the case grain boundary carbides in a sensitized stainless steel which failed by intergranular brittle fracture at 78?k2 In contrast to this type of embrittlement there are numerous examples of low-temperature intergranular embrittlement in which the fractographs are essentially featureless, for example, that of an oxygen-embrittled iron shown in Fig. 2. The only second phase particles visible are the small, widely separated, round oxide particles typical of the bulk material. The fracture surface is extremely smooth and the fracture path appears to follow the intergranular interface without deviation. This type of fractograph also implies that crack propagation has occurred without plastic deformation at the crack tip, since localized slip or twinning ahead of the crack would be expected to distort the interface and be readily visible in the fractograph. Such indications are occasionally seen in these fractographs, but are not characteristic. A second example of this type of fractograph is shown in Fig. 3, which is from a temper-embrittled, carbon-free, Fe-Cr-Ni alloy containing Sb, broken at 1OO?C.3 The similarity to the oxygen embrittled iron case will be apparent. In the case of the temper embrittled Cr-Ni ferrite containing antimony, it is possible to remove the embrittlement by suitable thermal treatment. The grain boundaries may then be examined by thin film transmission in the electron microscope for the material in both the nonembrittled condition and in the embrittled condition. Activities of silicon in Ni-Si melts have beelz determined in the temperature range 1480° to 1610°C from electromotive-force measurements involving the cells The data obtained are used to derive the activities of nickel and the integal free energies of mixing. Entropies of mixing are calculated from the free energies of mixing as obtained in the present study and the heats of mixing as available in the literature. ACTIVITIES in Fe-Si and Co-Si melts have been determined recently by the authors&apos; using galvanic cells consisting of alloy, an oxygen electrode, and an oxide melt as electrolyte. The present paper deals with activities in Ni-Si melts as measured with the same technique. A schematic diagram of the cell is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy and the electrolyte consisting of CaO and SiO2 are contained together in a silica-glass crucible. During the experiment the silica glass crystallizes to cristobalite on the surface of the crucible. Nickel contents of the electrolyte are very small (<0.1 pct as checked with chemical analysis), because of the noble character of nickel in comparison with silicon. A tapered silica tube is connected to the crucible through which a platinum or molybdenum wire is inserted, as shown in Fig. 1. A platinum tube reaches the surface of the CaO-SiO2 electrolyte from above. The platinum tube is provided with four holes on its side, through which oxygen of 1 atm pressure is blown over the electrolyte. The cell reaction is given by the equation Si(metal) + O2(gas) = SiO2(electrolyte) [3] and the galvanic electromotive force of the cell is given by the formula

If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 5th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 4th edition (1975) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Review. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. The Industrial Minerals Directory 1977, 1st ed., Metal Bulletin Books, Ltd., London, provides addresses of organizations in the field. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 18th annual meeting in 1982, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geological and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications: New Publications of the Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, 329 National Center, Reston, VA 22092 and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, US Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975. Four major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, Mineral Trade Notes, and Minerals and Materials. The last two are particularly good for news of foreign developments. The Bureau of Mines Employee Directory, available at all USBM offices, lists addresses and telephone numbers for all offices as well as same for all commodity and area specialists.

PART I.-QUALITATIVE, SPECTRUM ANALYSIS THOSE chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which, the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates maybe checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages; the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. THE. extraordinary volume of work done in this period, and the multiplicity of subject matter, make a year-by-year historical account undesirable, if the account is not to be an assembly of unrelated fragments. We shall, instead, undertake to narrate the development in this period of each of the branches of the subject separately, hoping that their interrelations will be self-evident. There is a certain arbitrariness in the selection of subject matter in the following sections. The development of important engineering alloys-for example, high-speed steel-is disregarded, for it is the primary purpose of this account to relate the advances in ideas, the growth of the science of metals; other historical accounts relate these parallel advances. Nor are advances in techniques stressed, though occasionally the most important are noted; nor is the progress described in allied fields such as welding, cutting, etc.; for though these developments have very frequently made possible the advances herein related, they are far too numerous to recount in anything short of a ponderous volume. There is a more serious arbitrariness, however; it is not an easy matter to draw the boundaries of physical metallurgy, and some contiguous subjects have been omitted that perhaps should have been included, such as, for example, corrosion, gases in metals, the magnetic behavior of metals and alloys, and certain other fields in the physics of metals. Meramec Mining Co., owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Co. and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corp., is engaged in mining, concentrating and pelletizing iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located about 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under some 1300 ft of limestone, dolomite, shale, and sandstone. It runs from east to west for about 1/2 mile and varies in width up to a maximum of around 600 ft. The orebody dips about 80" S. The ore is high grade magnetite with some local zones of specular hematite. The Precambrian country rock is rhyolite porphyry.

An investigation was made of the lensile proper-ties of recrystallized high-purity tungsten and a W-1 pel ThO2 dispersed-phase alloy over the temperature region of 800° to 2400°C. The thoria addition resulted in a modest strengthening effect over the entire temperature region. A decrease in ductility of both materials occurred above 0.5 Tm which was caused by void formation. Current theories of IT has long been recognized that a second phase of hard particles has a strengthening effect on a pure metal. At low or intermediate temperatures (<0.5 Tm), the strengthening effect is thought to arise mainly from the interaction of dislocations with dispersed particles. Above 0.5 Tm, dynamic recovery processes greatly alter the deformation mechanisms from those simply involving glide, and grain bound- strengthening by a dispersed second phase do not adequately explain the tensile results. Melallographic examination suggests that the improved strength of tire alloy results from the effect of thoria on the mierostructure. Stress-dependent thermally activated processes were found to occur high temperatures. aries may act as sources of weakness rather than strength because of grain boundary sliding. Grain boundary sliding at high temperatures has been postulated to be the primary factor giving rise to the formation of voids or cavities at grain boundaries1-3 which in turn cause premature failure and poor ductility.4 Voids, once formed, can grow by the condensation of vacancies from the equilibrium concentration&apos; or from the excess vacancies produced by the deformation.4,5 The high-temperature tensile properties of unalloyed tungsten have previously been investigated by Sikora and Ha116 and also by Taylor and Boone.7 The purpose of the present work was to investigate

The effect of 1ow-temperature stabilization anneals on the structure of the 0 phase Au-Cd alloys and on the diffusionless transformations observed in these alloys was examined by X-yay diffraction techniques. A phase separation in the ß-phase region was proposed to account for the experimenta1 results. The effects of quenching from elevated temperatures on the transformation behavior of these alloys were shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. IT has been shown that the high-temperature ß phase (CsCl structure) of the Au-Cd alloy system transforms to a phase having an orthorhombic (D2) ß&apos; structurel1-3 for compositions near 47.5 at. pct Cd and a tetragonal (4/m, m, m) ß" structure* in the vicinity of 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, crystallographically reversible, and occur on cooling at about 60° and 30°C respectively. The temperature interval from the beginning to the end of the transformation is of the order of 5°C in each case. Although the transformations are normally athermal, some of them have been reported to occur isothermally.= wechsler6,7 has shown that the effects of quenching a 49.0 at. pct Cd alloy from elevated temperatures are consistent with the retention of a nonequilibrium number of lattice vacancies. Annealing of these quench effects results in a broadening of the X-ray reflections.8 After a suitable quench, the 47.5 at. pct Cd alloy transforms to a phase having not the p&apos; orthorhombic structure but another structure which has properties similar to that of the ß" tetragonal structure.5.9 This change in the type of transformation has also been obtained after long anneals in the ß-phase region at about 70oC10 The present investigation was primarily concerned with the structural changes accompanying the above transformation phenomena. The change in transformation product and accompanying physical changes during an anneal in the ß phase have been termed stabilization effects. Experimental Procedure —The results reported in this investigation were obtained with the use of a Norelco diffractometer fitted with a temperature-controlled cryostat. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than ± 0.l°C during the measurements. CrKa radiation monochromated electronically with the use of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer was utilized. Specimens containing 47.5 and 50.0 at. pct Cd were prepared by sintering filings obtained from homogenized ingots of the proper alloy composition. (Gold of 99.999 pct purity and cadmium of 99.98 pct purity were used). All heat treatments were carried out with the specimens capsulated in vacuum ( < 10 % mm Hg) or in a He-H gas mixture. The quenching technique used in these experiments was to drop the pyrex capsule which contained the specimen from the annealing furnace into water, the temperature of which was controlled. The pyrex capsule shattered on contacting the water resulting in a relatively rapid quench. After the heat treatment, the specimens were mounted in the diffractometer and were left undisturbed in the diffractometer specimen holder during each sequence of measurements. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Low-Temperature Annealing—The transformations which were considered "normal" for these alloys were those obtained athermally during furnace cooling at approximately 50°C per hr after an elevated temperature anneal. Under these experimental conditions, the specimens were observed to transform to phases having structures whose diffraction patterns could be indexed as the ß&apos; orthorhombic structure for the 47.5 at. pct Cd and as the 0" tetragonal structure for the 50.0 at. pct Cd alloys. The transformation temperatures on cooling were approximately 60" and 30°C, respectively. Under the "normal" conditions both transformations were observed to go to completion, i.e., the entire volume of the ß phase was transformed to the product phase. In some specimens an extremely weak ß 110 reflection was observed at 20°C indicating that a small amount of retained ß was present. The effect of low-temperature annealing on the nature of the diffusionless transformations was examined for the 47.5 and 50.0 at, pct Cd alloy. The specimens were annealed in evacuated capsules at temperatures in the vicinity of 600°C (as specified in Table I) for 24 hr and were then cooled to 100°C at a rate of 50°C per hr. The specimens were then removed from the capsules and mounted in the diffractometer without allowing the specimen temperature to drop below 80°C. Annealing at the low temperatures was accomplished in the diffractometer by means of the cryostat which was mounted around the specimen. During the low-temperature anneals the lattice parameter, integral breadth of the reflections, and ratios of the integrated intensities of the fundamental and super lattice reflections for the 0 cubic phase were periodically determined. After annealing for the required time, the specimens were slowly cooled in the diffractometer and the diffraction patterns were recorded as a function of temperature. The rates of oxidation of tungsten have been determined at temperatures between 1320" and 3170°C and oxygen pressures to 1 amn using a surface -recession measurement technique. Above approximately 2000°C and 10-6 atm the rate is independent of temperature and can be calculated from gas collision theory assuming a constant reaction probability, e, of 0.06. Oxygen molecules react at surface sites where oxygen atoms have previously chemisorbed. This provides a direct pressure dependence at low pressures but at high pressures tungsten oxide molecule s form an adjacent gas boundary layer which lowers the PO2 at the tungsten surface. A correction for this effect using free-convection theory fits the rate data over the entire oxygen-pressure range from 10-8 to 1 atrn as well as data using O2-A mixtures. Below 10-6 atrn and above 2000°C, e decreases with increasing temperature because of desorption of oxygen atoms. Below 2000°C the rate decreases with decreasing temperature at all oxygen pressures following an apparent activation energy of 42 kcal per mole and depending on (Po2)n with n varying between 0.55 and 0.80. MOST of the previous tungsten oxidation studies have employed gravimetric methods and have been limited to temperatures below 1000°C where the weight loss associated with evaporation of tungsten oxides is negligible compared with the weight gain from oxidation.&apos; At higher temperatures, oxygen-consumption rates have been determined from pressure measurements, usually at constant flow rates, by Langmuir,2 Eisinger,3 Becker, Becker, and Brandes,4 and Anderson.5 The sensitivity of this method decreases with increasing pressure and, with the exception of Langmuir&apos;s work, these investigations were confined to pressures below 10-6 atm. Above approximately 1300°C, depending on the oxygen pressure, the rate of oxide evaporation is greater than the oxide-formation rate and the recession of the tungsten surface can be measured optically without interference from an oxide layer. This was first done by Perkins and crooks6 who heated tungsten rods in air pressures from 1 to 40 torr at temperatures between 1300" and 3000°C. The present investigation of the oxidation kinetics of tungsten at high temperatures emphasizes oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 1 atm. This is the range of interest for earth atmosphere re-entry applications of tungsten for which little data were previously available. APPARATUS The apparatus is a modification of the type used by Perkins and crooks.&apos; Ground tungsten seal rods, 6 in. long by 0.125 in. diam, were mounted vertically between two water-cooled electrodes, one fixed and the other having free vertical travel. The movable counter-weighted electrode is prevented from undergoing horizontal displacement by three sets of runners mounted at 120-deg intervals. Electrical contact is made by means of a water-cooled mercury pool. A 24-in. vacuum bell jar having a volume of approximately 267 liters was used as the reaction chamber with the sample holder mounted in the middle of the chamber. Power was supplied from an 800-amp dc variable power supply. Temperature readings were made by means of a Latronics automatic two-color recording pyrometer. With this instrument, corrections for emissivity are not necessary provided the spectral emissivi-ties at two closely spaced wavelengths are equal. Supporting measurements were made with a micro-optical pyrometer corrected for emissivity of bare tungsten and window absorptivity. The micro-optical pyrometer was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated tungsten lamp and both pyrometers were periodically checked against the melting points of tungsten and molybdenum using the oxidation apparatus. Above 10-6 atm, pressures were measured with an Alphatron gage calibrated against a McCleod gage. At 10-6 atm, a hot-filament ionization gage was employed. A magnified image of the self-illuminated tungsten rod was formed using a 360-mm objective lens mounted outside the bell jar. When the experiment exceeded 1 hr, the image was focused on a ground-glass plate about 10 ft from the tungsten rod at about X8 and the recession of the thickness of this image was monitored with a Gaertner cathe-tometer. When faster rates were encountered, a 35-mm time-lapse cinecamera with a telephoto lens and bellows extension was substituted for the ground-glass plate and cathetometer. Diameter recession rates were determined from the photograph image projected on the screen of an analytical film reader. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After installing the rod in the apparatus and cleaning it with acetone, the system was evacuated to 5 1 x 10-5 torr. Before oxygen was introduced,

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not, include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

It has been suggested, for some time, that the behavior of metals under high-temperature creep conditions is strongly influenced by the behavior of the grain boundaries present in the material. This has led to a number of investigations1-6 in which attempts were made to measure the properties of the grain boundaries themselves, both to determine their contribution to the creep process and to obtain further knowledge of their intrinsic structure and properties. The present investigation was undertaken to extend the observed data under more closely controlled experimental conditions and to attempt to clarify sonie of the discrepancies in the literature. A brief report of the preliminary results has been published.7 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For the present investigation, controlled orientation specimens were used having plane boundaries which terminated at the specimen surface. Trierys-tal specimens were used instead of the bicrystal type of Puttick and King,&apos; in order to simplify the gripping technique required to apply a shear stress along the boundary. The aluminum used was obtained from the Aluminum Francaise and was of 99.994 pct purity, containing 0.002 pct each of Cu, Fe, and Si. The aluminum tricrystals were grown horizontally from the melt, in graphite boats, and in an argon atmosphere, following the technique developed by Chalmers.&apos; The orientation of the tricrystals was controlled by using seed crystals separated by mica inserts. Thermal conditions were adjusted to produce tricrystals having boundaries which were macroscopically straight, parallel to the growth direction, and perpendicular to the top surface. Following growth, the tricrystals were carefully cut with a jeweller&apos;s saw to the test specimen shapes shown in Fig. l(a) and l(b). In Fig. 1(a), the boundaries subjected to shear stresses are indicated AB and CD: Points A and C are the ends of the mica inserts separating the seed crystals; points B and D are at lateral cuts made in the specimen. It was found that the slots left by the mica inserts at A and C had to be enlarged slightly, by cutting, to ensure that the boundary terminated freely at these points. A shear stress was applied to the boundarks by gripping the upper two legs in file-faced Inconel grips and suspending a weight from the lower part of the specimen held in similar grips, as shown schematically in the diagram. It ha been suggested that lormation fractures created by well stimulation treatments will adversely affect sweep-out efficrency in injection operations. Fluid-flow model studies involving vertical fractures of various lengths and fluid systems of various mobility ratios have been carried out to study this subject. In addition, limited data have been obtained on one model containing a horizontal fracture. It was found that relatively long and highly conductive fractures (not generally obtained fracturing operations) were required to affect the sweep-out efficiency substantially. In a given case in the field an approximate distinction can be made between the presence of long conductive fractures and shorter or less conductive ones. This is done with pressure build-up analyses along with data on the relationship of fracture length and conductivity to well productivity. This type analysis shows that usually the fractures induced are either short or of limited conductivity and therefore do not damage sweep-out efficiency. INTRODUCTION Improved well productivity and in-jectivity can frequently be exploited in injection operations. Higher total throughput can yield improved economics. On occasion, the achievement of an increased productivity or injectivity in specific wells can bring about a more uniform sweep of the reservoir. Higher rates can be exploited particularly in water floods of "depleted" reservoirs where a rapid "fill-up" is desired and where low pressures contribute to low well productivity. The creation of fractures local to the wellbore is an excellent means for achieving these objectives. Even though fracturing has been employed in some floods with success,1"3 there still seems to be some reluctance to employ this tool for fear of undue damage to the flood pattern and ultimate recovery. We therefore need to examine the influence which fractures of varying length may have on flood performance and then determine the length of fractures which obtain in the field with conventional fracture treatments. A substantial influence of fractures on the recovery obtained at breakthrough of the injected fluid has been presented by Crawford and Collins for equal fluid mobilities for the line-drive pattern.4,5 In addition, the influence which a fracture has on the production performance after breakthrough and on the ultimate recovery warrants consideration in reaching a conclusion concerning the use of induced fractures in flooding operations. This report presents this type of data for the five-spot injection pattern for several fluid mobilities. In arriving at some conclusion concerning the fracture lengths obtained in field operations we must examine the performance characteristic most affected by the fracture. This is the change in the flow system as reflected in the change in productivity and pressure build-up behavior. A study of these changes is also presented in this report. RESERVOIR ANALOGS The X-ray shadowgraph technique, employing miscible displacement in porous models, has been used in the study of the influence of fractures on pattern sweep-out efficiency. The X-ray shadowgraph procedure is described in detail in an earlier report8. Fractures were represented by leaving the proper portion of the model surface exposed to either injection or production. This assumes the fracture resistance to be negligible compared to that of the formation. Actually the flow resistance in propped fractures obtained in the field is sometimes not negligible so that the results with this model indicate the maximum influence of the fracture. Two types of models were necessary to represent vertical fractures in a five-spot flood. These pattern elements are illustrated in Fig. 1. In studying the influence of the horizontal fracture, only one well spacing length to thickness ratio of 50 was used. The pool unit of a Carter Electric Analyzer was used in studying the influence of fractures on productivity and build-up behavior. The square drainage system of a well was represented by a network of 576 elements of equal volume and resistance. One-fourth of this drainage area was studied as a model unit using a network of 144 condensers and resistors. Vertical fractures were represented by a shunt directed from the well perpendicular to the drainage boundary. Horizontal fractures were represented by a circular shunt. Resistance of a shunt was varied in representing different conductivities for the fractures. FRACTURE DIRECTION AND LENGTH The direction at which a vertical fracture extends into the formation and its length and conductivity influence the sweep behavior. The two

Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,&apos; and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.
