Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps

FahRENHORST and schmid1 observed that zinc single crystals work hardened less rapidly when strained in liquid air (- 185°C)than in a bath at -82°C, whereas at higher temperatures the rate of work hardening decreased with increasing temperature, as would be expected. Cadmium and magnesium showed no such decrease at -185°C. At that time the observed anomaly for zinc at liquid air temperature probably seemed insignificant. However it later was confirmed2 by experiments in liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and in the mixture solid carbon dioxide-acetone (-77"C) and therefore appeared to be real. seeger3 then suggested that the anomaly might be due to the different wetting of the zinc crystals by the cooling media. Recently a new confirmation was obtained,4 however the cooling media again were different: the rate of strain hardening was found to be lower in liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen than in pentane cooled to various temperatures down to -126°C. Ekperiments will now be reported in which the medium surrounding the specimen at the different temperatures was the same, namely gaseous air. The single crystals were made from "Overcor 99.99" zinc. They were grown in a vertical traveling furnace on seeds of nearly the same orientations. The diameter of the crystals was 5 mm and the length between shoulders 140 mm. The brass shoulders were stuck to the crystals by means of araldite. A thin steel wire was fixed to each shoulder and served to fasten the specimen to a Houns-field tensile testing machine. The crystals with the shoulders and part of the wires were surrounded by two concentric cylindrical containers. The coolant. either liquid air or ground solid carbon dioxide, was poured into the outer container only. During cooling the containers rested on a support which was removed when the straining was started. In order to check the temperature which the crystals would attain inside the inner container, a hollow bar of zinc in which a thermocouple was fitted was first mounted in the apparatus as a substitute for a crystal. It appeared that a constant temperature, respectively - 183° and -72°C, was attained inside the bar, if a soaking time of the order of 1 hr was allowed and if the outer container was constantly kept filled. Accordingly, this procedure was adopted for every tensile test. To take account of the large scatter, fourteen tensile tests were performed with liquid air and seven with solid carbon dioxide. The orientation of the crystals and the results are presented in the table, in which the symbols have the following meaning: 1 : temperature x : initial angle between basal plane and specimen axis : initial angle between slip direction and specimen axis a : shear strain at fracture 0: average rate of strain hardening = —-——- 100 t0 and Te representing respectively the critical shear stress and the shear stress at fracture. Despite the scatter of the a- and 8— values which is of the same order of magnitude as in the work reported by Seeger and Trzuble,4 it is evident that the strain hardening rate is significantly lower at -183°C thanat-72°C. The table also contains the average values calculated from Seeger and Trauble&apos;s results at the corresponding temperatures: z.e., four results at -183oC and two at-70°, -71°C. These authors calculated 9 in a slightly different way, but this is unimportant. The agreement between the a-values shows that both sets of experiments are comparable despite the differences in experimental techniques. The rates of strain hardening also agree and it may therefore be concluded that the anomaly is not

An economic appraisal of the western phosphate industrial potentials made between 1945 and 1948 revealed possibilities for a considerable expansion in the production of high analysis phosphate fertilizer. The most significant facts are: (1) a rapidly increasing and a much larger potential market which might be reached from the western deposits, (2) the existence of large undeveloped deposits of phosphate rock, (3) potential energy from sulphuric acid, coal, or hydroelectric power in the general vicinity of the deposits. The challenge to the mining and metallurgical engineering profession is in the economical development of phosphate mines and in improving processes for utilization of the western ores and the recovery of byproducts to make the expanded western industry satisfactorily compete with the industry in the East and South in meeting the fertilizer needs of the Midwest and Far West.

The tensile behavior of bcc ordered P&apos; AuZn single crystals (CsCl structure) has been investigated under varying conditions of temperature, composition, and orientation. Between -0.2 and 0.4 T, multi-stage hardening occurs fm stoichiometric and nonstoichio-metric crystals oriented near the middle of the primary stereographic triangle. At higher and lower temperatures, parabolic type hardening occurs, followed by work - softening at the higher temperatwes. Deviations from stoichiometry give rise to increased flow stresses. Multi-stage hardening was observed for most orientations, except along the [loll-[lll] boundary and near the [001] corner of the stereo -graphic triangle, where parabolic type hardening occurs. Along two slip systems, (hk0)[001] and (, operate simultaneously while in the [001] comer, slip occurs mainly on the system. Electron microscopy of deformed crystals revealed bundles of edge dislocations forming walls approximately Perpendicular to the glide plane. In general the plasticity of 4&apos; AuZn closely resembles the plasticity of bcc crystals. In recent years, considerable interest has arisen concerning the mechanical properties of the CsCl type intermetallic compounds Ag Mg,&apos;- Fe co,&apos; and Ni Al.&apos;-&apos; The compound P&apos;AuZn is structurally similar. It has a low and congruent melting point of 725"~,&apos;" remains ordered up to the melting point,16 and pos-esses a range of solid solubility from 47.5 to 52.0 at. pct Au at room temperature.15 The present paper reports the results of an investigation on the general tensile behavior of material in single crystal form. Some dislocation configurations characteristic of the deformed state are also reported. The results of a detailed study of the slip geometry in AuZn are presented in a separate paper.17 PROCEDURE Alloy preparation, crystal growing techniques, and the procedure followed in selecting specimens of minimum composition variation are reported elsewhere.17 Dumb-bell shaped tensile specimens were prepared by carefully machining single crystals in a jewellers&apos; lathe to a gage length of 0.80 in. and diam of 0.090 in. Back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns and room temperature tensile tests revealed that machining damage could be eliminated by electrochemically polishing 0.005 in. from the machined surface followed by annealing at 300°C for 1 hr. Specimens were polished in fresh 5 pct KCN solution (40°C, 12 v). Experiments were performed by gripping specimens in a self-aligning pin-chuck and threaded collet system, then straining in a floor model Instron tensile machine. All tests were performed in duplicate. Experimental variables included temperature, composition, and orientation. Unless otherwise stated the strain rate was 2.5 x 10"3 per sec. Liquid testing environments included nitrogen (WOK), nitrogen cooled petroleum ether (133" to 293"K), and silicone oil (293" to 488°K). Resolved shear stress-shear strain curves were electronically computed from autographically recorded load-elongation curves. Stress and strain were resolved on the macroscopic noncrystallographic (hkO) [001] system operative under the specific test conditions of temperature, strain rate, and orientation reported earlier.17 RESULTS The temperature dependence of the work-hardening curves is shown in Fig. 1 for gold-rich crystals of 51.0 at. pct Au oriented near the center of the stereo-graphic triangle. Over the range of intermediate temperatures from -200" to 400°K, they are very similar to those classically observed for fcc metals (reviewed by Nabarro et al.).&apos;&apos; The beginning of deformation is characterized by a region of decreasing hardening rate, stage 0, which is followed by a region of low linear hardening, stage I, and then a region of higher linear hardening, stage 11. At the higher temperatures, stage 111 is observed, a region of decreasing hardening rate. Over the intermediate temperature range, the extent of stage 0 and of the slow transition between stages I and I1 decreases with increasing temperature. Total ductility is large, often greater than 300 pct shear. As the temperature is either increased or decreased, the extent of stage I is decreased, giving rise to parabolic type flow and reduced ductility. Similar temperature effects have been reported for bcc ~r~stals.~~-~~ Below -14O°K, hardening is terminated in brittle fracture while above -400°K. initial hardening is followed first by work-softening and then by chisel-edge type ductile fracture. THE Committee-on Production Control, at its meeting held during the last annual session in February, 1930, evidenced great interest in problems of stabilization affecting all mineral industries. . No immediate program of activity for the Committee as a- unit was decided on, however,, and efforts during the past pear have consisted lirgely of further stressing the economic aspects of mineral production and of the action by committee members, :.serving in their individual capacities, in sponsoring constructive changes, in specific, industries. Of greatest interest to the general subject of production control in 1930 was the very definite advance toward better coordination of demand and supply in the petroleum industry. Furthermore, since opinion both within and without the oil industry now favors a constructive program, and with a gradual change in legal precedents, it seems not unreasonable to expect greater progress in the near future.

There are several exceptions from the practical operating viewpoint that might be taken with the paper. The author recommends using a "curve" in plotting safety factors of ropes and suggests that the U. S. Bureau of Mines change its present "step curve" method to the "curve" method. From an engineering theoretical point of view that is possible, but from a practical standpoint it is not possible. Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16 in. to 1/4 in. which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient. If ropes were manufactured in the diameter gradients of 1/1000 of an inch or thereabouts, the curve method could be used. Also, from a practical standpoint, if an operator is to hoist from a depth of 4000 ft, for example, he will determine the size of the rope necessary for that depth, and it is only natural that he will have safety factor to spare at lesser depths, and in plotting this excess capacity the natural end result is a curve. The U. S. Bureau of Mines tables are set up so that the operator will know what size rope at the required safety factor he will need at his maximum depth. He is not concerned with lesser depths. W. A. Boyer (author&apos;s reply)-Mr. Grant states, "Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16" to 1/4" which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient." There is no connection or relationship between the "size" pattern gradient and the present "factor of safety" step pattern gradient. The inherent factor of safety values for any particular size of rope with a given connected load when plotted for various depths is a curve, and with modern rope material and construction the inherent factor of safety curve is quite far removed from the present recommended factor of safety step curve. This is shown quite clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of my paper.

THE emphasis in some political quarters on hemispheric unity and defense indicates Latin American mineral resources should be more extensively developed. However, United States mining companies have, in many instances, been discouraged by the laws of southern neighbors. At the same time, some of the countries have liberalized their mining laws in an effort to attract investments from the United States. The resultant confusion has been detrimental to all concerned. Ownership of Mineral Deposits Examination of the mining codes of Latin American countries shows that, without exception, governments reserve the right of direct ownership of all mineral resources. Ownership can be divided between the Feredal Government and the states or among the Federal Government, the states, and private individuals. However, in the majority of the nations constitutional authority vests all mineral rights solely in the Federal Government. Mexico is the only country that has expressed Federal ownership as imprescriptible; the other republics have not defined the exact significance of government ownership. The implication derived from the general economic and political climate is that all mineral resources are ultimately to be regarded as a national heritage. Whether a concession granted to an individual or corporation carries any right of private property is shaded with a variety of meanings. The exceptions at one extreme are Argentina and Bolivia, whose laws state explicitly that a concession granted to a juridical person is an act of the state, and the land becomes the private property of the individual, and the concessions constitute real property. However, in Mexico mining concessions or grants do not create rights of fee-simple ownership. The concession only conveys the exclusive right to explore, develop, and work the deposits. The mining property remains the property of the state. In some instances exploitation concessions represent a compromise between private and government ownership. In Honduras the period granted to a mining enterprise is fixed at 90 years. At the end of that time, the enterprise and all installations revert to the state without compensation.

All acid mine drain waters, regardless of source, share certain characteristics; but they do differ in exact chemical composition, degree of acidity, and total solids content. Any serious program to treat such waters must recognize these differences and apply to each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of each specific case the technique which offers the best promise of technical and economic success. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Mines and Mineral Industries has originated and funded studies of many different treatment means. Neutralization with lime is now being used on 200 different polluted streams in Pennsylvania, and multistage flash evaporation has been selected for a particularly large and troublesome outfall near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A 5 x 106 gpd plant for this latter site is now being designed by Westinghouse Electric Corp. which developed a concentration process based on multistage flash evaporation as part of the State&apos;s research program.

SPEED is essentiaI in this war program and it is hard to keep up with developments. When the title of this paper was chosen, the contemplated magnesium production for which plants were then under construction was some 200,000 tons of metal per year or sixty times the 3350-ton production in prewar 1939. A few- days later an analysis of the President&apos;s 185,000-plane pro-gram, incendiary bomb schedules, and the additional requirements of the Army. Navy and Maritime Commission made it apparent that a much greater amount of magnesium must be provided in 1943. The new figures are huge but the censor will not per-mit their disclosure.

To forecast the future of coal intelligently, one must first consider the market outlook. Coal can be used for many purposes, but currently about 25% of it goes into metallurgical coke, while 75% serves as fuel. Coal for metallurgical coke should show a modest growth for at least the next decade, primarily because of increased exports, but the important factor in the coal outlook is energy. Today, this country faces a serious shortage of energy, and its requirements are growing at an almost unbelievable rate. Last year the United States consumed 68 quadrillion Btu, or double the energy it consumed in 1950, and, if projections are correct, this figure will grow to 150 quadrillion Btu by 1990. Thus, in one working lifetime, the nation&apos;s energy consumption is expected to increase by roughly five times. The future of coal hinges on its degree of participation in meeting this energy need. The Federal Power Commission predicts that coal consumed by electric utilities will increase about 4-576 per yr, reaching 472 million tons by 1980 and 615 million tons by 1990. If this projection proves correct, 1980 consumption will be double that of last year and, even more startling, the utility industry alone will use more coal in 1990 than the entire coal industry produced in 1970. This is a tremendous increase, but in view of the projected energy growth, it is difficult to see how this country&apos;s needs can be satisfied with- out a coal contribution of this magnitude. Unless some new source such as solar energy is discovered, it must be assumed that the projected energy will come principally from the present-day sources-oil, gas, nuclear materials and coal.

There are four main requirements to be considered in selecting a wire rope that will provide the best service. A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and choosing a rope with qualities that will best enable it to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A Good Rope Choice Matches Strength with Stress A wire rope should be (1) strong enough to sup- port the maximum load anticipated with a proper safety factor, (2) able to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires, (3) able to withstand surface abuse such as abrasion, pounding, and wire scrubbing, and (4) able to take abuse such as crushing and distortion.

THE amount of research done in the last few years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Desch1 in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl&apos;s paper in 1936 2 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for its review and bibliography is an article by A. I. Krynitsky.3 While considerable material has appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertain-ing to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approxi-mately the same composition alpha brass has been determined at three temperatures.

(communication to the Secretary *).-From an extended study of the Oatman and Secret Pass districts of Mohave County, Arizona, I believe that the genesis of the ore deposits, in most cases, is directly connected with rhyolitic intrusions later than the Tertiary flows; and that the developments of, the future will prove these intrusives to be the primary source of the ore. In support of this opinion I will instance the Wilhelm-Eclipse dike in Secret Pass and the Murdock, Nellie, Black Range dike and ledge in the southern part of the Oatman district. The Wilhelm-Eclipse dike is a very fine-grained light-colored siliceous rhyolite dike with a strike of N.45W. traversing the full length of the Secret Pass district about midway between two major faults which mark the easterly and westerly boundaries of the district. Subboundaries may be revealed in aluminum by the formation of pits on the surface during cooling from elevated temperatures. The pits do not form in the vicinity of high- or low-angle boundaries. They are attributed to the condensation of vacancies from a super saturation produced during coolirzg. Using the vacancy pit and Schulz X-ray techniques for observing low-angle boundaries, a study was made of the transition from the nearly perfect seed to the striated structuke characterist-ic of aluminum crystals grown from the melt. It was found that the individual striation boundaries develop by the coalescence of very small-angle boundaries, as well as by the addition of individual dislocations. Several mechanisms for the formation of striations are discussed. Evidence was found suggesting that a super-saturation of vacancies exists near a growing interface, and it is proposed that the resulting climb of existing dislocalions produces "half&apos;-loops" at the interface, which combine to form the low-angle striation boundaries. LINEAGE, or "striation" boundaries, have been studied in detail by Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1,2 in crystals of tin grown from the melt, and by Atwater and Chalmers3 in lead. They found that single crystals grown from the melt consist of regions which are separated by subboundaries that lie roughly parallel to the growth direction. A difference in orientation of 0.5 to 3 deg exists between the striated regions; the misorientation is such that the lattice of one region could be brought into coincidence with the lattice of its neighbor by a rotation about an axis approximately parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal. They observed an incubation distance for the formation of striations which increased with decreasing growth rate. They also found that in any crystal, the sum of all rotations of the lattice in one sense, in going from one striation to the next, is very nearly equal to the sum of all the rotations in the opposite sense. A striation boundary, which is a low-angle grain boundary, can be described as an array of dislocations. If it is assumed that suitable dislocations are introduced into the crystal during solidification, the formation of striation boundaries can be explained as a result of the migration of the disloca- tions into arrays. The formation of arrays is energetically favorable since the energy of an assembly of dislocations can be reduced by the interaction of the stress fields when a suitable array is formed. This investigation presents and interprets new information concerning the nature and origin of striation boundaries in aluminum. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single crystals of high-purity aluminum (Alcoa 99.992 pct) were prepared by horizontal growth from the melt.&apos;&apos; The specimens were subsequently electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid kept between -10° and 0°C in a bath of dry ice and alcohol. The current density was approximately 6 amps per sq in. Doherty and Davis9 have shown that in aluminum sub-boundaries with misorientations of not less than several seconds of arc may be revealed by the vacancy pit technique. During cooling from elevated temperatures pits form on electropolished surfaces of aluminum crystals as a result of the condensation of vacancies.11 Pits do not form in the vicinity of small- or large-angle grain boundaries, presumably because such boundaries act as sinks for vacancies. Boundaries of misorientations down to 3 sec of arc are revealed as pit-free regions, see Fig. 1. The Schulz X-ray technique12 was used to determine the angular misorientations of subboundaries. In this method, white radiation from a micro-focus X-ray tube is used to produce an image of a fairly large area of a single crystal surface. Subboundaries cause splitting in the diffracted image, see Fig. 2. Misorientations down to about 15 sec of arc may be observed with this technique. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION Figure 1 shows a striated aluminum crystal grown at 10 cm per hr etched by the vacancy pit technique. An incubation distance of about 1 cm is observed before the initiation of striation boundaries. Fig. 2 is a Schulz X-ray photograph of a striated crystal similar to that shown in Fig. 1. A large area of the crystal was studied by means of a series of photographs. Fig. 2, which is a reflection from the (100) plane, included about the first 4 cm of crystal to freeze. INTRODUCTION The development of refining processes involving gas injection into liquid metals has seen the evolution of a variety of designs [I]. During the last few years or so the top, bottom and side blown processes have, essentially, been combined to produce a series of mixed gas blowing schemes (eg. the LBE [2,3] and LD-OB processes [4,5]). Although, a variety of mixed gas blowing processes have been carefully engineered and recorded operational experience now attests to their effectiveness, optimising their design and operational performance is another matter. Detailed process analysis of such operations is impeded by the complex nature of the physical and chemical processes involved: . fluid flow behaviour of the liquid metal and injected gases, . chemical reactions in the vessel, . mass and heat transfer within the fluid phases in the vessel, . influence of the geometry (eg. location of the tuyeres, etc.), . monitoring the operational performance. By and large, design and operating parameters evolve from a combination of laboratory scale experiments, pilot plant work and, of course, practical engineering experience. Conventionally, the gas-liquid system used to model the industrial process is air-water, for a number of valid reasons including – . visual demonstration plus geometric and (to some extent) dynamic similarity, . the fact that the system demonstrates, at least, qualitatively many of the complex features of gas injection - interaction between the gas and the liquid - the nature of the gas flow behaviour - qualitative indications of mass transfer rates Important experimental contributions to the understanding of gas liquid systems include the work of Brimacombe [6], Wraith [7], T.Robertson [8], D.Robertson [9], Guthrie [10] and Szekely [11] (these references provide starting points to identify the major published work in this area). Although air-water systems have been instrumental in providing a great deal of qualitative insight into the fluid flow behaviour of the processes, reliable quantitative predictions are more problematic. A number of workers (notably Brimacombe and colleagues [6, 12])have demonstrated that different gas-liquid systems can lead to wide variations in behaviour. Other limitations of physical modelling include the assumptions of isothermal flow, scale- up of turbulent flow behaviour and the inability to directly include the effects of chemical reactions. The above limitations in physical modelling, therefore, yield a natural role for mathematical modelling provided that it can be made comprehensive enough whilst remaining cost-effective. The major physical processes involved in gas injection systems may be summarised as . behaviour of the gas envelope structure in moving through the liquid metal . the global movement of the liquid metal . momentum interaction between the liquid metal and the injected gas . heat transfer and mass exchange via the chemical react ions. The behaviour of gas envelopes forming at a tuyere and then moving through the liquid has been investigated thoroughly by a large number of workers. Such models are generally based upon simple physic- al concepts derived from visual observation. An early model by Davidson and Schuler (DS), based upon a force balance between the liquid inertia and a combination of the bouyancy and momentum forces on the envelope, has proved to be a useful tool in predicting bubble volumes at detachment [13]. The DS model has been successfully modified in a number of ways [14-17] to cope with heat transfer and reactive transfer rates, etc. Furthermore, the basic ideas summarised above have also been confirmed on industrial converters by both Guthrie [I8] and Brimacombe [19]. Models have also been developed to predict the behaviour of the "chemical" component of some gas-liquid systems. However, one thing is clear; all gas-liquid reactive systems are governed by the degree to which effective mixing occurs. As such, the processes are dominated by the behaviour of the heat and mass exchange of the two phase fluid flow system. THIS subject may be controversial. Personal preferences influence the final selection of cyclones, and side issues such as costs, floor areas, head room, and ease of replacing worn parts all enter the picture, but the following comments and data should apply to most cyclone selection problems. Broadly, the uses for cyclones in wet classification may be divided into three fields: 1) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed rate and sizing vary and the products vary. For example, feed may be divided into a sand product and a slime product. 2) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed varies, one product to have constant sizing. This calls for adjustment in either the apex or the vortex aperture. 3) Closed circuit operation, the finished product to have constant sizing. Most classification jobs fall in this category.

The discovery of eight new oil fields, two of which may be of major importance, was the outstanding record in Michigan this year. These new fields have helped to support the declining production from old areas and place the total of 18,559,000 bbl. in line with the past six or seven years. Thus, it appears that Michigan is doing its part in maintaining the production of the country in the third year of the war. The new fields are in the central basin area where oil was first discovered in Michigan, thus tending to focus attention on the deeper part of the lower peninsula of the state. Through 1944 the state of Michigan has produced a total of 222,-641,580 bbl. of crude oil from 100 pools, many of which arc relatively small. Among the previous1y discovered fields Reed City is still the outstanding producer, with Fork, Headquarters, and Adams following in the order named. The Reed City pool produced a little over 5,000,00 bbl., which was more than one third of the state&apos;s total for the year. Almost two thirds of the year&apos;s total oil production came from fields discovered in the past five years. Maps A map of the oil and gas fields of Michigan in 1943, published in the A.I.M.E. report for 1944,* shows the main producing areas and should be referred to if information in regard to their location is desired. The producing zones are shown in the columnar section in the same publi- cation." The data in Tables I and 2 have been carefully &apos; checked and every effort has been made to show as complcte information as possible. New Discoveries and New Developments Eight new producing areas were discovered during 1944 which, in order of importance, are: Deep River Field.—The discovery well in the Deep River field was drilled by Don Rayburn and others, and should be listed as a chance discovery, as, from a geological standpoint, it was not considered favorable until oil was found at a depth of 2838 ft. in a dolomitic layer in the top of the Dundee limestone. The first well was completed in January 1944, with an initial production of 2500 bbl. By the end of the year 15 wells had been completed, proying an area 2 1/2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Coldttater Field.-The Coldwater field was discovered in August 1944, by the Sohio Oil Co. Production is from secondary dolomite at the top of the Dundee at a depth of 3703 ft. To the end of 1944 nine wells had been drilled on 40-acre spacing. Essexville Field.—Essexville field was discovered by United Drillers and Producers, Inc. Eight wells had been completed to the Dundee lime by the end of 1944, and prospects were good for further development during 1945. Hilliards Field.—Hilliards field was discovered by Cook and Fortney. Production is from the Traverse lime at an average depth of 1588 feet,

WE are approaching the depletion of our principal source of iron ore-the Great Lakes deposits, which have provided 85% of the nation&apos;s requirements for the past fifty years. This situation presents a threat to our standard of living and our position as a world power. Fortunately, in the Great Lakes region there are still tremendous quantities of potential iron ore in the form of the low iron, high silica rock called taconite. The economical extraction of iron from taconite will insure our future steel supply if no new deposits available to the United States even in time of war are discovered. In the new process presented here, the iron is reduced directly by a simple method and then separated from the silica. The product is "feed," not to the blast furnace, but to the steel plant. This process requires very much less plant, less physical and chemical treatment, and less fuel and auxiliary materials than the conventional ore concentration-blast furnace method. In my opinion, this new, fundamentally different approach offers a better hope for the solution of the iron ore problem.
