The increased pace of globalization in the mining industry has presented more opportunities for Canadian service companies to participate in ventures abroad. However, varying cultures, laws, competitive environments and contracting philosophies in other countries make it impossible to take for granted what is normal in the Canadian context. The author discusses some of his experiences and situations encountered in over 30 years in the diamond drilling industry, the last third of which were primarily focused on projects outside of this country.

With thousands of kilometers of buried oil and gas pipelines throughout the country, carrying flammable, high-energy hydrocarbons, the integrity and safety of this transportation and distribution network are paramount. The pipeline industry has the primary responsibility for pipeline safety and has in many ways taken the lead in dealing with safety issues. Over recent years, regulatory demands have increased, requiring operators to comprehensively evaluate their pipelines through indirect and direct inspections and to manage risk through integrity programs. Mechanistic and correlative models have been developed that assist in the prediction of pipeline integrity and the determination of reassessment intervals. These lifetime prediction models are based on decades of laboratory research as well as pipeline operating data, material data, and field monitoring data pertaining to soil conditions and CP. An overview is presented of an integrated approach towards the development of such models for the evaluation of external cracking and corrosion of transmission lines.

In these days, when mass production seems to be the watchword of all industrial companies, nothing is left undone to attain this end. Transportation, where necessary, becomes a question of very great importance. For this reason every mechanical contrivance known to man is employed, with its resultant advantages. So successful has man's ingenuity been that, offhand, we are inclined to say that practically all transportation on a large scale is done mechanically, that is, where speed and economy are desiderata. Granting this, one would think that to read a paper on the horse before your honourable and highly technical Society would surely be a waste of time, and that any Company employing old-fashioned 'horse' power would certainly be very much behind the time, to say the least. However, the fact remains that the biggest industry in our country today-coal mining-must use horse power to a great extent, being compelled -both by considerations of economy and by necessity. For this reason,' in the production of coal under present conditions, the pit horse is of great importance to this industry and is to be considered seriously as one of the units that help to make coal mining a success or a failure. Hence, in employing horses as a power for transportation, care must be exercised in selecting the animals, and the care of this power must be considered as seriously as any other department of such an organization. In selecting a pit horse, several things must be borne in mind, that is, one must get as much horse power as possible in as compact a form as is practicable. This determines the type of horse we must use, which is of very great importance under our present conditions of coal mining. With low roof, steep grades, and forced production, a distinct type of animal must be selected.

"Representatives of various industries and the Canadian coast Guard formed a Bulk Cargoes Committee three years ago. In 1976 and 1978, I have attended the meeting which take place once per year here in Ottawa as representative of the Canadian Mineral Processors, Dave Hendricks from Granisle accepted the charge in 1977. Our Secretary, Bob Bruce, has suggested repeatedly that I report to the Membership on the deliberations to this group. Twice I found good excuses; this year I did not. I was reluctant to address you since the Committee's deliberation proceeded at a pace which might be identified as Government squared. The Committee advises a Government agency which in turn negotiates with foreign Government agencies.At the outset, I will describe the developments which led to the formation of the Committee and its purpose.The Canadian Mining Industry ships annually millions of tons of products to overseas customers; be it iron ore, coal, fertilizer, or base metal concentrates. Most loadings are in vessels of foreign registry and all will be directly affected by Canadian or International regulations of the transport of such bulk commodities. The major shipping nations are members of an Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO). This organization elaborates regulations which govern shipment of all cargo, bulk materials and concentrates included. At IMCO'S deliberations, Canada has one vote, one voice on the Consultative Committee and is represented by our Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has over the years been in contact with industries when discussions concerned shipment of bulk cargoes. In the early sixties, a ""Concentrate Committee"" did exist. It consisted of metallurgists from a number of mining companies and Government representatives. This committee was instrumental in the development of what became known as the ""Concentrate Code"", legislation which has evolved into the Canadian Bulk Cargoes Code as it is known today. The concepts of the flow moisture point and transportable moisture limit originated from its work. Incidentally, both criteria are widely accepted and utilized world-wide. The Concentrate Committee faded away once the Concentrate Code has been adopted."

The subject of the Coast Range batholith and its eastern contact zone needs no introduction to British Columbia mining men. Because of its reputed potentialities, this zone has aroused much interest. Because it has touched the pockets of the people by actually producing dividend-paying mines, it has been able, more particularly in certain isolated sections, to retain and accentuate that interest. However, the Stikine River section of the zone has never had the good fortune to have a mine developed, which, through profits or lack of profits, could create such interest. The Cassiar district, beyond the Stikine River area, has been a lure to the prospector for over half a century and was still strong enough in the last few years to attract close to a million dollars in capital and labour. All of this has passed through the Stikine river area, has looked at it, and ignored it. Sufficient interest has never been aroused in the area to bring forth an effort to see what is there, in spite of the fact that it belongs to the same zone in which some of our richest mining camps are located. Because the contact zone of the Coast Range batholith has long been recognized as an ore producer of considerable potentiality, the Geological Survey some years ago formulated a plan to map as much of this area as possible in order to assist in promoting its development. This plan has been furthered during the last fifteen years whenever opportunity presented itself, until today a fairly large part of the area has been covered. The work which has been done on the Stikine during the last two years is the beginning on what is the largest remaining gap in the general plan.

Arguably the SMC Test® has become the most popular laboratory hardness test in the world with over 17,000 tests having been completed to date, covering over 650 different ore bodies. It is now routinely used in design, optimisation and orebody profiling projects. The test is unique in that from relatively small amounts of drill core it simultaneously provides parameters that are used in simulation modelling of AG/SAG and crushing circuits as well as work indices that are used in power-based equations for predicting the specific energies of AG/SAG/Crushing and HPGR circuits. The very large data base that has been accumulated has provided the opportunity to study the differences in variability from deposit to deposit. This paper describes and discusses the trends that have become apparent from the study of this data base. Recommendations for appropriate selection of sample numbers are also made which are based on these trends.

"The virtue of spray drying is that it is a drying method, and so far the only one by which it is possible in one operation to divide a mineral concentrate into its basic primary particles.,In so doing, each particle gets the same treatment and the result is a dry concentrate more homogeneous than any other known concentrate drying process. This is particularly good for a flash furnace requiring a bone dry finely divided feed. The spray dryer also features a very short residence time and due to the very quick operation the solids are kept cool thus preventing any risk of fire or explosions on these pyrophoric materials.There are many spray dryers now in operation in the mining industry and one of the latest applications is in South Africa where a spray dryer is treating a copper-nickel platinum concentrate which is, after drying, fed toan electric arc furnace. Experience has shown that the concentrate should contain 4% moisture for the furnace, and this is achieved by drying the concentrate bone dry and then back-mixing with thickener underflow pulp to provide an extremely homogeneous feed to the smelter. As mentioned before, mixing with pulp would be more of an advantage because we would not be evaporating water which would have to be added again afterwards.One of the first spray dryers to go in was at Western Mining Corporation in Kambalda in Western Australia. "Although we have no uranium- producing mines as yet in British Columbia, uranium, associated with gold and cobalt, has been found in two deposits in amounts such that the combined value of the metals not only warrants the further exploration of these deposits, but also encourages the search elsewhere in the Province for other similar deposits.Where uranium-bearing veins have been found in British Columbia, the uranium mineral is the crystalline variety of uranium oxide, uraninite, rather than the massive, non-crystalline variety, pitchblende, such as found in the Great Bear Lake deposit and in other similar deposits along the southwestern margin of the Precambrian shield.The principal occurrences of uranium known so far in British Columbia are associated with bodies of granodiorite and quartz diorite along the eastern side of the Coast Range belt of batholiths. In this part of the Province, interesting amounts of uranium occur on the Gem property in the Bridge River area and on the Victoria property south of Hazelton; and smaller amounts occur on the Red Rose, Rocher Debouze, Delta, and Ohio properties, also south of Hazelton. At the Gem and the Victoria, the uranium mineral, identified as uraninite, occurs in deposits that also contain abundant cobalt-nickel sulpharsenides, and molybdenite.At these properties, the uraninite occurs as clusters of small black crystals of sub-metallic lustre that may be seen upon careful -searching of a highly radioactive specimen with a hand lens. Under the microscope, the uraninite is seen to be in the form of cubes or modifications of cubes that may occur as individual grains widely scattered throughout the gangue or may be gathered into clusters of several grains. The grain size of the uraninite is in general small. Although a few clusters of grains are up to about 10 mesh in diameter, the individual grains, whether in clusters or widely disseminated, are rarely more than 400 mesh in diameter."

This short article is quite different to the general run of papers that are presented to the Institute, but no apology is offered because I consider that first-aid and mine-rescue work are of equal importance to many other subjects that are dealt with in our Transactions. Members of the Institute should be as much interested in the safety of persons engaged in the mining industry as they are in the practical methods of modern mining. We must not only do our best to conserve life and property by adopting every known device to that end, but we must also prepare ourselves so that we may take prompt and effective action when life is in danger, or when property is subject to loss. The need for such preparation in Alberta is perhaps greater than in most places where mining is carried on, and we must spare no effort to assemble at every mine men who are well trained in first-aid and mine-rescue work. The large area over which the mines are distributed renders central training stations out of the question, hence the need for local rescue-teams. Hospitals with skilled staffs, close enough to the mines to be convenient, also seem to be out of the question; therefore the greater need of a high standard of first-aid training for the people in our mining camps. The Government mine-rescue cars are supplied with the equipment necessary for training persons in this essential work and also for dealing with disasters should they occur. The question then arises: are there a sufficient number of men who are trained ? If so we can rest assured that what is possible to be done will be done. But if a sufficient number of trained men are not available much loss of life and damage to property is likely to result.

Effective management methods are required to prevent employee injuries, equipment or environmental damage and process losses. Good leadership also provides for employees to perform their work in the safest and most efficient manners to attain optimum recoveries of the valuable minerals and produce high quality mill products. Equipment and processes must be designed, operated and maintained as required to assure safe and efficient mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry must contend with many challenges to attain and maintain a competitive position in today's global market. Canadian Mineral Processors play a vital role in meeting the challenges and achieving optimum mineral productivity.Ongoing technology developments and improvements continue to be imperative to maintain a viable mineral processing industry. The efficient implementation of technology developments requires a safety conscious, skillful and productive work force.In addition to technical and human resources, challenges may also include governments, labour unions or environmental advocates who at times may appear to be misguided or unrealistic. Canadian Mineral Processors must not allow themselves to be overwhelmed by these apparent obstacles but must use their demonstrated ingenuity to achieve successful solutions.It should be recognized that the majority of the Canadian work force are, in fact, a potentially talented and skillful people with ambitions to excel. As leaders of people, we must provide the methodology, incentive and direction that will allow our work forces to realize their ambitions. If the potentials of our work forces are not recognized and leadership is not properly exercised much loss will occur. That is, safe effective and efficient work will not be achieved."

The first application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls was in 1985 at a cement plant, for the purpose of capacity improvement. Then various circuit configurations were derived to achieve a reduction in overall specific energy consumption, by transferring more of the grinding required to the HPGR. In most circuit configurations, the recycle of fines is required for effective breakage between the rollers. By increasing the fines amount in the feed material to a specific level within the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and a higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained, resulting in compact flakes, including more fines. The fines recycle results in enhancement of the interparticle breakage. This paper will discuss the effect of the feed size distribution on HPGR performance.

Application of teleoperated and automated (or ?autonomous?) mobile equipment in underground metal mines represents a promising avenue for overcoming some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the overall effectiveness of autonomous loading and haulage equipment compared with conventional human-operated machines. Factors affecting availability, utilization, and production rate are explored, and an emphasis is placed on some problems and risks not present in conventional human-operated systems, as well as on the character and criticality of autonomous equipment. The need for a more in-depth analysis of factors affecting overall autonomous equipment effectiveness is stressed; these factors should be taken into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with recommendations and directions for future research.

Abstract - Mineral Resources and their subsequent conversion to Ore Reserves are of key importance to mining companies. Their reliable estimation is critical to both the confidence in a feasibility study, and also to the day-to-day operation of a mine. Together with sampling, assaying, geological and other errors introduced during interpretation and estimation, additional errors are likely to be introduced during the application of technical and economic parameters used for conversion of resources to reserves. There is thus a requirement for high-quality interpretation and estimation to be supported by high-quality data. Any company expecting to make sound investment or operational decisions must base this on both relevant and reliable information. An Ore Reserve statement generally contains a single set of grade and tonnage figures without a discussion of the potential inherent errors in these estimates. Some sensitivity studies may be run, but confidence limits are rarely quoted and, if they are, often do not take into account many of the factors that cause uncertainty in the grade and tonnage estimates. Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates thus carry certain errors leading to uncertainty and risk; some of these are unquantifiable for various reasons, for which the operator should be aware. This paper presents a review of the potential sources of error that might occur during a resource estimation program, which are carried through into the reserve estimate. A number of methods are discussed that allow the estimator to be more transparent about the inherent risks in his/her estimate. Emphasis is placed on data quality, and the requirement for strong quality management to be linked to continuous improvement.

Research is a much over-overworked word, sometimes a much abused word; the result of this has been that many who really need the word avoid it, shy away from it just as we do from that most useful word camouflage. We have not been altogether happy in our substitutes. Some years ago I spoilt a very good proposition by using the word investigation. There were those who thought that men and methods were to be investigated instead of simply processes. They expected disruption instead of co-ordination. The bad psychology up-set the scheme. The word experiment is even worse in its psychology. To the mind of the "practical" business man experiment denotes ignorance, waste of time and money and presupposes failure. It is not so long ago that the recognized way of improving the methods about a mine was to get a new manager. Until comparatively recently the average life of a boss in a mine in the West was under, rather than over, two years. Certainly was this the case in the smaller mines. Directors did not recognize that a cock-sure new boss was a greater experiment than a certain amount of feeling-his-way on the part of the old one. We always say that no two mines are the same but we are only now realizing to what extent the fine points of the game can and must be learnt on the job itself. One of the main differences between a small property and a large one lies in this study of the fine points of the game. In the early stages operation is the main point-get her going and keep her going.

Ni and samaria-doped ceria (Ni-SDC) cermet are desirable materials for making a solid oxide fuel cell anode working at intermediate temperature (800°C or lower) due to its good ionic/electronic conductivity at the reduced operating temperature. An advantage of the use of a Ni-SDC anode is the enlargement of the effective reaction zone in the interfacial area between the anode and the electrolyte. As a result of the mixed ionic/electronic conductivity of the anode, the electrode reaction rate is enhanced. Investigations into the properties of the ceria-based anode reveal that the performance of the anode is closely related to its microstructures, which are dependent on the composition and fabrication conditions of the ceramics. In this paper, a method for quantitative characterization and correlation of Ni-SDC cermet microstructures to the performance of an anode is investigated. A series of Ni-SDC anode samples are prepared by screen-printing (SP) and spin-coating (SC) techniques, and different microstructures of the samples are obtained through controlling the SP or SC conditions and the sintering temperature. Individual phases (Ni, SDC and pore) in the tri-phase boundary (TPB) microstructures in the electrode are differentiated and segmented from each other in optical and SEM images based on the differences in refractivity and atomic contrasts among the phases. The geometric properties of the segmented phases are characterized using image analysis methods, so that a quantitative skeleton illustrating the TPB microstructures of the Ni-SDC electrode is obtained. Statistical analysis of the distribution of the three phases in the TPB microstructures is performed and the relationship of the microstructures with the optimum electrode is interpreted in terms of the microstructure analysis data.

High-ranking new scientists and engineers -particularly those with the Ph.D. degree -find themselves in an apparently delightful situation; the glow of attention that surrounds them and the dazzling starting salaries that are offered to them may indeed be turning their heads a bit and the attitudes of some of them are sometimes expressed with a smugness that can find its equivalent only in freshmen. On the average, however, the new graduates are, without any doubt, the best trained ever, or at least they have been the most expensive to train in the universities.There appear to be exciting opportunities for competent, well-trained and educated scientists and engineers far beyond the numbers that can be annually produced, and the demands for excellence in depth as well as in breadth of training probably will continue to increase for many years to come. The problem is visible all around us in Canada that there is much more money to buy brains than there are brains to be bought."

Such a schedule should specify when and if blocks should be extracted in such a way as to maximize NPV, while satisfying wall-slope and production capacity constraints. It is well known that this problem can be modeled with integer programming (IP). However, integer programming is not used in practice because the size of typical block models makes such problems intractable to standard IP solvers. In this article we describe a scalable IP-based methodology for solving very large (millions of blocks) instances of this problem. We show that embedding standard IP technologies in a local-search based algorithm we are able to obtain near-optimal solutions to large problems in reasonable time. This methodology has been tested in several mine wide block models.
