This report investigates the mechanical behavior of fine soils in a lunar environment in engineering gravity-flow bins. The ultrahigh vacuum, absence of moisture, and a lunar gravity one-sixth that of earth gravity represents a unique environment, both advantageous and detrimental to these systems. On earth, moisture and gases contained in powder masses can be responsible for complex descriptions of gravity flow. Their absence appear to simplify the lunar soil behavior. However, simulation of the lunar gravity and vacuum complicates the development of experimental data for designing bins. The properties of a dry soil powder, its behavior under one-dimensional compression, and its torsional and direct shearing strength under earth atmosphere are described in part 1 of this paper. These properties provide the parameters for a finite-element analysis to optimize the design of bins, to be described by Dr. William Pariseau in part 2. Shear tests assess the failure criteria for the material. Compression tests provide modulus and (Ko) stress-ratio values from the loading portion of the compression cycle, duplicating the condition of a bin at rest with the discharge closed. During the unloading portion of the compression cycle (soil overconsolidated), the residual Ko values rise. It is postulated that this phenomenon creates a high-lateral stress in bins when they approach incipient flow. Assessment of the Ko value, overconsolidation ratio, and the void ratio state is proposed as a criterion to determine the flowability of powder.

This document reports the results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems used in coal mines. This work was conducted under a program whose original goal not only involved the development of practical and effective electronic systems for operational communications, but also for monitoring, at a central location, remote instruments at key positions in a mine. About half way through the originally proposed three year effort, the program was redirected to phase out the communication effort at the end of two years and to concentrate the program" resources on the investigation of new monitoring system concepts developed by this research. Thus, the work reported here is incomplete relative to the originally pro- posed program. However, the work was carried to the point of providing sufficient evidence to aid in the comparison of certain new communication concepts. For the concepts chosen for this study, the work was stopped short of hardware development and field testing, Several reports in the form of Master's theses and a Doctoral Dissertation have resulted from this research. They each report in considerable detail the results of several individual" contributions to this program. In preparing this report, an attempt has been made to provide a complete description of the significant results but with- out burdening the reader with the minute details. These more detailed reports are referenced heavily for the convenience of those interested. PRESENT COMMUNICATION METHODS Two types of communication systems are presently used In coal mines. They are: 1, Various forms of telephone systems, and 2. Carrier current radio systems using the trolley line as the interconnection circuit. Carrier current radio is used almost exclusively for control of rail trafflc by the dispatcher. Almost all other communication uses the telephone system, Telephone lines generally extend to areas where trolley lines are not present such as the outside offices and warehouse. Therefore the telephone system provides the primary means of voice communication. Telephones - Telephone systems employed in American coal mines fall into three categories. 1. Paging type telephone systems - these systems have individual stations which use battery powered transistor audio amplifiers to boost signal levels for normal communication. When in the page mode,

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

"A group of bisbenzylisoouinoline alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silica-induced fibrosis in animal models [1, 2]. The objective the present study was to characterize the binding of several of these alkaloids to phosphatidylcholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods, respectively. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, chiral configurations, and double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is a highly effective agent in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, certain analogues of tetrandrine such as curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In conclusion, the results of these studies indicate that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of this class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds. These data also suggest that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.INTRODUCTIONInhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of silicosis. This fibrotic disease is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lungs with the progressive development of pulmonary dysfunction [3, 4]. Many theories concerning the etiology of silicosis involve silica-induced activation of alveolar macrophages. Evidence indicates that in vitro silica exposures result in the generation of chemiluminescence, and the release of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from alveolar macrophages [5]. Activation of alveolar macrophages has also been demonstrated after intratracheal instillation or inhalation of silica [5, 6]. Such excess release of reactive products from pulmonary phagocytes has been associated with damage to the lung parenchyma [7, 8]. In addition, silica exposure results in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages, which enhance proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by these pneumocytes [9-12]."

This is the first report published by the Bureau of Mines on washability characteristics of coal from beds in Tennessee. It is based principally upon screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of raw coal from a bed on the Cumberland Plateau. Stripping operations were undertaken recently on this bed by the Cumberland Collieries, Inc., near Chalybeate,Van Buren County, Tenn. The bed has not been definitely correlated, but it may be an extension of the Sewanee bed, which has been mined extensively in the Tracy City district to the south-vest and at points near Dunlap and Pikeville to the southeast and east. It was spoken of by officials of the Cumberland Collieries as the Sewanee bed at the time of sampling for this study. In a letter dated October 16, 1948, W. D. Hardeman, geologist of the Department of Conservation, Nashville, Tenn., states: "The stripping operations of the Cumberland Collieries near the old postoffice at Chalybeate are, I am fairly certain, in the upper part of the Whitwell shale, which carries the Sewanee coal. This coal may be a stray seam, but it probably can be correlated with the Sewanee coal, which is mined farther east. "There are no detailed geologic maps or reports covering the area, and this opinion is based on what was observed in visiting the strip mines in that general vicinity." The laboratory work upon which this report is based was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Cumberland Collieries, Inc.

"At the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Engineers at Kansas City, Mo., in June, 1919, the Bureau of Mines offered to cooperate with municipal fire departments for the purpose of obtaining information regarding composition of the air in burning buildings. (Katz, S. H., Statement made at Convention of International Assoc. of Fire Engineers: Fire and Water Eng., vol. 66, July 16, 1919, pp. 129-30, also Fireman's Herald, vol. 78, July 12, 1919, pp. 48.) The gas-mask laboratory of the Bureau's experiment station at Pittsburgh sent vacuum bottles for taking samples to fire chiefs in twenty-five cities, who had signified their intention to aid in this work. It was hoped to obtain one hundred or more samples, because statistics in quantity are necessary for drawing reliable conclusions concern-in the likelihoods of encountering irrespirable as in burning buildings. This far, eleven samples have been received by the laboratory. Results of analyses and pertinent data regarding these samples are given in the accompanyingEight of the eleven samples contained, no carbon monoxide; seven of the eight were taken above the ground level and one below ground. One sample taken above ground contained 0.03 per cent carbon monoxide, and this quantity is not dangerous to breathe for a limited time. Of the three samples taken below ground, one contained no carbon monoxide; the other two contained 0.10 and, 0.35 per cent, respectively. This indicates that in a burning building, the hazard from carbon monoxide is much greater below the ground level. The cause undoubtedly lies in the poorer ventilation that is usually found in cellars or basements. Abundance of ventilation provides the necessary air for complete combustion, or if incomplete combustion does occur, the carbon monoxide generated by the fire is greatly diluted with fresh air and swept away by the current. It may be noted that the highest proportion of carbon monoxide was found in a cellar where a fire as burning among piled cases. The difficult access of air to the burning parts facilitated the formation and lib ration of carbon monoxide. The smoke here was very light and no difficulty was experienced in breathing. Some of the air containing dense smoke showed little change from normal air by analysis. Thus the density of smoke or the irritation and difficulty it causes in breathing are no indication of the presence of poisonous gas. None of the samples shows important oxygen."

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. "The number of persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division,The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut—in in 1930 than in 1929."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe diamond drilling was conducted under the general supervision of McHenry Mosier, chief, Mining Development Branch, Minerals Technology Division, Region VIII, and the direct supervision of Kenneth M. Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

The mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect system permits mine paging telephones to be interconnected with the public phone system, thereby providing emergency and off-hours communications. The system, a push-to-talk, push-to-listen system, is compatible with any mine paging system utilizing dc voltage on the line to enable paging. A tone generator of the proper frequency enables an outside caller to page over mine pager system loudspeakers. A caller inside the mine can make an outgoing call to a preselected, preprogramed number with the use of a proper frequency tone generator. The system includes an automatic hangup timer that restricts the time off-line due to a wrong number or incorrect hangup to 20 seconds and 6 minutes, respectively.

"An in vitro study of the biologic responses of surface-modified and native silica and kaolin was made to provide comparative information on the supression of cytotoxicity by pulmonary surfactant. The release of alveolar macrophage cytoplasmic enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (IDH), and lysosomal enzymes B-N-acetylglocosaminidase (B-NAG) and B-ghucuronidase (B-GLUC) and sheep blood-cell hemolysis were moni¬tored as indicators of cell membrane damage and cytutoxicity. Surface modification of silica and kaolin with dipalmitoyl lecithin (UPI) resulted in complete abrogation of cytotoxicity of both minerals. These findings indicate that surface modification of minerals with different adsorption properties by pulmonary surfactant generally lessens their prompt adverse effects.INTRODUCTIONAcute and chronic silicosis are well-characterized clinical and pathologic entities resulting from the inhalation of crystalline silica (Morgan and Seaton, 1984). Kaolin, a layered aluminosilicate clay frequently mined and used in manufacturing, contains tetrahedral silica alternately layered with alumina octahedra. Kaolin is relatively .inert biologically, and distinctly greater pulmonary burdens are seen in patients with kaolinosis than are seen in patients with silicosis. Crystalline siliea (quartz) induces a significantly greater degree of fibrosis in exposed animals in vivo than does kaolin (Hamilton and Hardy, 1974; Parkes, 1982; Hunter, 1976; Sheers, 1964; Warraki and t-lerant, 1963; Lynch and Mciver, 1954; Lapenas et al., 1984).This difference in pulmonary disease associated with the two types of dust is not reflected by in vitro cytotoxicity as Jetermined by pulmonary macrophage bioassays or erythrocyte hemolysis. Cytotoxicity studies using crystalline silica and kaolin of similar size fractions show comparable bioassay response on a mass basis. These cellular bioassays, therefore, do not correlate with the relative in vivo pathogenicity of silicates."

Motion capture involves recording the position and global orientation of joint sensors of a real object, in most cases a real person performing some human activities. This information is usually recorded at uniformly spaced instances of time, or as it is often called frame-by-frame. Then the recorded motion data sets are processed and mapped into a skeleton hierarchy of a virtual, computer simulated human figure to control the motion of the virtual human in the computer simulation. In the first part of the paper we review several new techniques developed to facilitate the manipulation, noise reduction, storage and reuse of captured data, which have a potential to reduce the overall cost of motion simulation and improve its realism. In the second part of the paper we consider the real life problem of reducing a worker?s risk from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. We formulate a set of requirements to motion editing for this particular task and analyze the limitation of existing techniques

The Secretary of the Interior acting through the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey is authorized by the Strategic Materials (Public No. 117 - 76th Cong., Chapter 190 1st Sess.) to make investigation concerning essential minerals of which the quantities or grades obtainable from known domestic sources are inadequate. The Bureau of Mines, in carrying out its part of this program, may investigate deposits of such minerals in whatever manner may be necessary, in order to determine (1) the extent and quality of the are, (2) the most suitable method of mining and beneficiating it, and (3) the cost at which it may be produced. The essential objective in doing these things is to determine where and how supplies of minerals and metals of which domestic production is usually inadequate might be obtained in a national emergency, even though at higher cost than usual.

"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. The fundamental properties of dielectric separation were studied to provide insight into the design and operating characteristics of a dielectric separator. Force equations on mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. Responses to variations in the electrical voltage and frequency, feed rate, particle size, dielectric fluid, and dielectric constant were tested theoretically and experimentally, using a 5-cm-diam dielectric separator. High-dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume (EDFV) that surrounded each drum-electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter; spacing of less than 0.4 cm was required for a good separation. Dielectric separation was effective for separating minerals with dielectric constants that differed by approximately 2 or more.

Fibered, portland-cement-based gunite products were applied in the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine using a variety of pneumatic guns and gunning crews, The demonstrated wet-mix (with silica fume), dry-mix, and surface bonding products were sampled by the Bureau and subjected to a suite of engineering analyses. Gunite flexural and compressive strength, rebound, permeability, porosity, dust loading, shooting rate, crew requirements, and cost factors were evaluated. Steel, fiberglass, or polypropylene fibers were contained in all but two of the gunires tested. Both Bureau and private testing laboratory analyses are provided for some products. Electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed on the silica fume fraction of the wet-mix gunite to characterize the dust. Aggregate size fraction distribution analyses were performed to provide strength relationships. Results indicate that all of the commercially available fibered-gunite materials tested can provide beneficial sealant, spall prevention, or roof stability control attributes for underground mining environments when applied by an experienced crew using a well-maintained gun, in accordance with product manufacturers' recommendations and when used for the designated purpose.
