Design and optimization of open pit limits are of paramount importance because they provide information for evaluating the economic potential of a mineral deposit and for developing short and long range mine plans. Many algorithms and their modifications have been used to design and optimize open pit limits. These algorithms have provided mine planning engineers with pertinent information in designing, optimizing and extracting ore reserves by open pit technology. However, they do not address the random field properties associated with the ore grades and reserves and commodity prices, and thus, fail to yield the truly optimized pit limits in any time horizon. In this paper, a new algorithm, MCSIMFNN, which overcomes these limitations is proposed and used to optimize open pit limits. The random field properties of the ore grade and reserves have been modelled using the modified conditional simulation based on the best linear unbiased estimation and local average subdivision techniques. Artificial neural networks are used to classify the blocks into classes based on their conditioned values. The error back propagation algorithm, in the neural networks, is used to optimize the pit limits by minimizing the desired and actual outputs error in a multi- layer perceptron under the pit wall slope constraints. The optimized pit value obtained by this algorithm has been compared to that from the Lerchs-Grossman's algorithm in a case study. The results are the same, but in random multivariable states, the MCSI MFNN algorithm is the most suitable for pit optimization. The method is also fast since it mimics the operation of the brain in the solution of the pit optimization problem.

Although coal mine tunnels such as the main haulageways or roadways are the lifelines of coal mines, little attention has been paid to them in terms of pre-construction planning and design. This paper presents the results of research aimed at improving design methods for coal mine tunnels. Studies of the current practice and design needs in the United States were performed for coal mine development entries. A design approach evolved for coal mine tunnels is presented. It is based on field investigations and laboratory model studies aimed at integrating into reinforcement guidelines for coal tunnels. An up-to-date bibliography on coal mine tunnels is provided.

Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water-bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited number of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quantify the magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted such a study at a mine site in Greene County, PA. A total of eight water wells were drilled, and hydrologic parameters, such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield, were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water-level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

The leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was investigated by using the rotating-disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effects of rotation speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions and catalysts on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in terms of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the Eh-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was very slow at temperatures below 100 °C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of the palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to he 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

"Rock dust is applied in underground coal mines to prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. The application is conducted either dry or wet. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages however the formation of caked rock dust particles is cited as a significant concern for wet applications. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of modifying the rock dust particle surfaces to repel water and each other by the addition of oleic acid (OA) and sodium oleate (NaOL). At a NaOL dosage of 2 lbs/ton, a contact angle of 112o was measured indicating strong surface hydrophobicity and ability to repel water. FTIR studies indicated a chemisorption mechanism which is necessary for long term stability of the surface modification. The dispersion rate of the modified rock dust samples was elevated by the application of both OA and NaOL thereby indicating a significant reduction or elimination of the detrimental effect of caking. Tests in an explosion chamber showed a 79% reduction in the dust explosion potential relative to untreated rock test applied by the wet technique. INTRODUCTION Mine explosions have been a long-time threat to underground coal miners attracting significant attention to the accumulations of combustible dusts and gasses. In the presence of sufficient oxygen and heat, the accumulations of combustible dust and gass can lead to large-scale underground coal mine explosions [Harris et al., 2010]. To alleviate the problem, rock dust such as limestone can serve both as a thermal inhibitor and a heat sink to inert the coal dust explosibility thereby prohibiting the occurrence of dust explosions [Richmond et al., 1975; Amyotte et al., 1995; Dastidar et al., 1997; Man et al., 2009]. The dispersibility of the rock dust is an important characteristic that determines the degree of explosion prevention [Greenwald et al., 1938; Mozumdar et al., 1974; Amyotte et al., 1995]. Unfortunately, the environmental conditions of an underground mine has the potential to cause caking of the rock dust which reduces the dispersive characteristics needed. The dispersive property of rock dust can be enhanced by modification of the particle surface properties by the application of chemical additives [Greenwald et al., 1938; Mozumdar et al., 1974; Spence, 2004; Vogt, 2011; Doidge et al. 2014]. The major mechanism for rock dust caking is the adsorption of water which forms liquid bridges at the particle-particle contact points where saturated solutions of soluble powder ingredients are present. Changes in temperature or relative humidity result in solvent (water) evaporation and the formation of dry bridges [Rumpf, 1958; Specht, 2006]. One method to prevent caking is creating hydrophobic rock dust to repel water from the solid surface thereby preventing the formation of liquid and solid bridges."

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, CO, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward-sloping (20%) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward-sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used, due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results.

At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. "A coal bump is characterized by the sudden failure of one or more pillars and an associated release of kinetic energy. Although the geologic conditions surrounding coal bumps are often similar, their occurrence and magnitude are difficult to predict. This paper presents the development of an approach to assess the potential for coal bumps in room and pillar mines through the use of energy concepts and special consideration of the interface properties between the coal and overlying rock. Back analyses were performed on the widespread collapse of a room and pillar mine with an associated 3.9 local magnitude seismic event. Pillar and mine-scale models were constructed using the distinct element method to simulate the mining stages leading up to the collapse. A variety of loading conditions, material properties, and interface properties were evaluated for their effect on unstable failure of single pillars, and the mine-scale model was used to study the evolution of failure during progressive mining. The extent of unstable failure was quantified in these models by calculating the total kinetic energy released during each mining stage. Through the parametric analysis of single pillar models, it was found that softening parameters in either the coal or the coal/rock interface can individually facilitate unstable failure of pillars, but the combination of the two in a single model produced a much higher release of energy during failure. The results of the mine-scale model further illustrated the trend as the combination of softening parameters in the coal and coal/rock interface produced a series of failures which most accurately reflected the collapse event at the mine. The method of room and pillar stability analysis demonstrated in this study effectively explores the potential for large coal bumps. INTRODUCTION The analysis of coal pillar behavior is challenging because natural variability in geologic conditions requires estimation of material strengths and predicted loads for a given mining situation. Large width-to-height (w/h) ratio pillars and deep overburden present an additional challenge, as the failure behavior of such pillars is more complex and may involve unstable, sudden collapse. Empirical methods have improved the success of coal pillar design for a wide range of conditions, but for deep cover and squat pillar geometries, less accuracy has been achieved in predicting pillar performance (Mark 2000). As with any empirical approach, more back analysis and the consideration of new variables may help improve understanding and accuracy of future designs. This paper presents a study of pillar stability through the back analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse, which occurred in August of 2007. Pillar-scale models are utilized for the calibration of material properties and assessment of potential instability under varying conditions, and mine-scale models are constructed in an attempt to reproduce widespread failure and correlate with observations at the mine. Special consideration is given to the properties of the coal and the coal/rock interface, and kinetic energy is calculated throughout the course of the simulations to gauge the level of instability when pillar failure occurs. Models were constructed using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) (Itasca, 2014)."

Materials which are likely to produce Acid Rock Drainage (ARV) can be identified with a reasonable degree of certainty. However, it is not currently possible to predict the concentrations of future contaminant discharges with similar confidence. One way of overcoming this problem is to model the uncertainty in knowledge related to estimates of future contaminant concentrations, and utilize this information in a decision model to decide on acceptable levels of expenditure on ARV control measures. The paper presents a risk modeling approach and proposes a decision model.

Earlier publications from The University of Alabama have indicated that column flotation performance is improved when operating at low pulp levels and when the feed is directed into the froth phase. To validate these early observations a series of tests were performed in which the position of the feed entry to the column and the pulp-froth interface were systematically varied. The optimum grade-recovery relationship was achieved with high feed entry (WA) of column height) and very low pulp levels (<10% of column height). The position of the pulp-froth interface appears to be the more critical variable. When operating in this mode (1. e. at low pulp levels) column flotation becomes. in reality. a froth separation process.

The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has conducted tests to determine the effectiveness of two methods for reducing diesel particulate emissions in underground coal mines. Both methods involved collection of the particulate material before being released into the environment. One method utilized a disposable pleated paper filter attached to the tail pipe; the other utilized a reusable wire mesh screen attached to the tail pipe. This paper describes the instrumentation and testing used to evaluate both control methods. Results of respirable dust and diesel particulate measurements made underground are presented and analyzed.

Measurements have been made of the rate of capture of single particles of strongly hydrophobic, surface-methylated, quartz, of sizes ranging from 12 to 40 pm diam., by single rising bubbles of diam. 0.5 to 1.1 mm. The results agree closely with the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic collision rates, indicating that, in this system, every collision results in capture and retention of a particle.

Adsorption of nonionic/anionic surfactant mixtures on kaolinite has been studied, with •Sodium dodecylsulfate as the anionic surfactant, and •Octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecylether as the nonionic surfactant. Synergistic interaction between these surfactants was found to cause adsorption of the nonionic surfactant with its hydrophilic chains protruding into the bulk, leading to substantial changes in wettability and dispersion characteristics of kaolinite. Similarly, hydrophobicity changes are observed also for silica particles upon adsorption of nonionic ethoxylated alcohols owing to possible changes in the orientation of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface.

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite-element method with a time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress¬control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of a pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of a failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and may effectively control the development of a failure zone in the floor.

A paradigm shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results can invoke questions such as how much was produced, at what cost, and was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as pre-eminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and a concentration on productivity have been an essential part of these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. This situation presents an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now night offer some interesting opportunities for the Future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today&apos;s work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work Force. The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is one approach to defining, capturing and transferring this expertise. The WCPM suggests a paradigm shift, moving from a focus on products (quantity) to a focus on the process (quality). It also involves a slight change in the process -- a different way to think and work. Of great importance, it entails a belief and a commitment to people within the organization; a commitment to collect simple (but interesting) data; exploration for insightful ways to plot and integrate that data; and finally the search for creative methods to reinvest that knowledge back into the organization, that is, back into the work force. As a way of thinking, the WCPM subordinates information about how much is produced daily or how many were injured over a year&apos;s time to concern and detail for how the individual&apos;s and the work crew&apos;s performance contribute toward meeting organizational goals. Drawing upon the expertise within members of that work crew to address and solve operational problems is one approach for meeting organizational goals. This everyday focus on how we work is hypothesized by the WCPM to make the difference between a good section supervisor and the average one; an exemplar continuous-miner operator and the run-of-the-mill one; a mining crew that produces consistently high quantities, but, inadvertently, degrades the production of other units. The WCPM permits objective and reliable performance data to be collected. This data then can be used to define variability within tasks of work crew members; to relate observed variability to a cost consequence; and to more meaningfully analyze performance through the integration of traditional analytical tools, such as the production simulator, CONSIM, with a recommended behavioral approach, the WCPM. Basis for engineering test Most equipment selections and purchases involve a field trial test of the system. Technology is routinely bench tested at the manufacturer&apos;s facility, government agencies and the mine site. The WCPM suggests a similar, but more practical, method for testing the performance of a work system -a test for how technology is used (by people) at the work site. It implies learning from veteran mining personnel that have gone well "beyond the book." This approach to learning and to integrating training with everyday work life can help answer questions such as: What constitutes desirable perfor¬mance as, for examples, a shuttle-car operator, a miner operator or a bulldozer operator; what characterizes exem¬plary performance within the context of the work system, the technology and the work crew; how can investments in the worker he linked to measurable results within the organiza¬tion? This paper explores these questions and makes recom¬mendations for enhancing the cost-linkages between invest¬ments in people and the mine&apos;s monthly cost sheets.

Ventilation and refrigeration for mine climate modification, contributes significantly to the operating costs of a deep hot mine. Mine climate simulation programs can be used to minimize the impact of these costs. There are several computer codes available including CLIMSIM?, to assist in this work. Whichever simulation program is used, it is the mine ventilation engineer who must supply the input data. This paper raises and answers the following question, namely: what accuracy is required of the basic input parameters, in order for a certain precision to be obtained in the predicted air temperatures? In the first part of the paper a new approach is described to estimate the dry and wet bulb temperature of the airflow, either in a dry or wet roadway. The calculation procedure allows an arbitrary temperature change with time, using Duhamel&apos;s superposition solution. Matrix-vector representation is applied to simplify the computational structure. In the second part of the paper the sensitivities of the dry and wet bulb air temperatures are analyzed to the changes of the rock thermo-physical properties, the heat transfer coefficient and the wetness factor.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It&apos;s a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.&apos; It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,&apos; manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means.
