Various controlled and ambient tests were undertaken to evaluate the performance of a variety of digital heat stress monitors, psychrometers and simpler temperature/relative humidity data loggers that measure, or determine, such parameters as: dry-bulb, natural wet-bulb, psychrometric wet-bulb and globe temperatures. In this comparison, funded by the Deep Mining Research Consortium, it has been found that all the instruments can competently measure dry-bulb temperature but the accuracy of other sensors could introduce significant uncertainty. For example the quality of relative humidity sensors and failure to correct for the barometric pressure difference in deep mines, directly impacts upon the calculation of psychrometric wet-bulb. The comparison has shown that the response of dry-bulb and globe temperature sensors can vary widely under different radiant heat conditions; however this would be negligible in most mines. Of more concern is the differing performance of the natural-wet bulb sensors especially at low relative humidity and low air velocity. Furthermore, from these tests and the currently available theory it was not possible to determine if any of the natural-wet bulb instruments measured that value correctly or validate any relationship between psychrometric and natural wet-bulb temperature at low air speeds where their difference is greatest. Consequently the uninformed use of some of the commercially available environmental heat stress monitors or derivations from other instruments could provide erroneous results affecting the work load category that can be accommodated or the rest ratio regime required.

The successful technical demonstration of coarse coal slurry transportation at Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in West Virginia suggests that it is now appropriate to seriously consider this technology in other applications, especially the transport of ' coal in surface mining. Early examination indicates that coarse coal slurry transport may be highly competitive with existing haulage systems, depending on a number of factors. These factors are not yet completely defined, but certainly will include production rates, coal physical and chemical properties, terrain, soil conditions, climate, water availability and quality, availability of skilled labor and other economic considerations impacting the existing haulage systems.

Characterization and beneficiation of dry iron ore processing plant reject fines of Khondbond region, India, was investigated. Different characterization techniques viz. size analysis, size-wise chemical and density analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, sinkfloat analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and QEMSCAN were carried out. Based on characterization results, two process flow sheets comprising wet screening followed by conventional gravity concentration and two stage classification with different beneficiation routes were used to recover the iron values from reject fines containing 58.73% Fe, 5.54% Al2O3, and 6.6% SiO2. Finally, suggested flow sheet comprising of two stage classification and advance gravity concentration followed by the combination of grinding, classification, and froth flotation produced iron concentrate of 2.36% Al2O3 with 75.8% yield which can be used in sinter/pellet making.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

Heavy earth-moving machineries used in openpit mines intensively expose drill operators to whole-body vibration and shocks, and thus to musculoskeletal disorders. The roles of individual, machine and rock-related factors in their exposure remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study investigated their roles in 39 drill operators from Indian iron ore mines. It shows that 70 percent of the operators were exposed to high levels of vibration, above the limit values recommended by ISO 2631-1 (1997). Multiple linear regression models showed that the whole-body vibration and shock exposures were strongly associated with operator’s age, drill-machine model and rock hardness, uniaxial compressive strength and density. The role of body mass index was close to significance (p = 0.08). Univariate analyses found the drill’s age, seat-pad thickness and seat backrest height were also strong predictors. These results help in identifying risky operators, materials and occupational situations, and in implementing appropriate prevention and intervention strategies to reduce and monitor the exposures and health risk. In addition, during the planning stage of acquisition of new equipment, anthropometric data of the operators should be considered for the ergonomic design of the seat.

With the passing of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, many utilities are opting to switch to lower sulfur coal to meet new SO2 emissions requirements. This lower sulfur coal may be from new suppliers or it may be from current suppliers that modify existing cleaning plants or build new plants to produce this higher quality coal. New, sophisticated coal cleaning simulators are useful tools for optimizing cod cleaning circuit operating parameters to maximize the production of clean coal that meets more stringent specifications for SO2 emissions potential. The examples in this paper were developed using the Coal Cleaning Simulator (CCS), running under ASPEN PLUS™, that was developed under a Department of Energy project cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. With advanced sensitivity analysis and optimization features, CCS allows a quick, efficient, cost-effective review of coal cleaning plant performance to meet current production goals and to plan future changes in plant operating parameters or circuitry configurations.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

"A magnetic proximity detection system is mounted on a mobile mining machine to prevent underground workers from being pinned or struck by machine motion. The system generates magnetic fields around the machine to determine safe working distances. The minerworn component measures the magnetic field in order to approximate location. Large masses of steel, such as those from mining equipment, can alter the magnetic field distribution. This affects the locational accuracy of the system, thus adversely impacting worker safety. To examine this problem, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a method and test system to study the influence of a steel mass on the magnetic field distribution. The results show that a steel plate can strengthen the magnetic field perpendicular to the generator by up to 40 percent. Furthermore, they show that the degree of the influence on the field distribution is a function of distance. The results from this study can be used to further develop and improve the performance and reliability of electromagnetic proximity detection systems used in underground mining applications.IntroductionOn average, 250 miners are injured every year, and 43 miners were reported to be killed by striking or pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines in the United States between 1984 and 2015, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015). Continuous mining machines are large mobile machines used to mechanically cut coal in underground mines. These machines weigh approximately 60 t (132,000 lb) each. Although modern continuous mining machines can be remotely controlled, operators still need to be close to the machine primarily because of the low visibility and wide blind spots of the underground working environment.The MSHA promulgated a final regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except fullface machines. MSHA has approved five such systems to be intrinsically safe for use in underground coal mines: (1) Strata Worldwide’s HazardAvert System, (2) Frederick Mining’s Model 200 HazardAvert Detection System, (3) Nautilus International’s Coal-Buddy System, (4) Matrix Design Group’s M3- 1000/Joy Global SmartZone Gen 1 and (5) Matrix Design Group’s IntelliZone/ Joy Global SmartZone Gen 2."

The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

Global warming is a political reality in the United States today. The actual impact of the continued utilization of fossil fuels is not known and is open to debate. However, the growing concern about the continued use of these fuels is problematic. There are technologies available to us today that would permit America to meet its future energy demand and not contribute to global warming. The inconvenient reality is that fossil fuels cannot completely be replaced with energy conservation and the use of wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and nuclear energy. The connection between the greenhouse effect and global climate change was first identified by physicist John Tyndall in the 1860s. To prove the greenhouse hypothesis, Roger Revelle and his research team started measuring carbon dioxide concentrations in the earth?s atmosphere in the early 1960s (Becker, 2007). With the rising concern about global warming, scientists throughout the world have been obtaining surface and air temperature data. Scientists have also been comparing CO2 concentrations found in glaciers throughout the world with theorized annual temperatures. Data for both dates back 1,000 years. Armed with this data, many nations of the world and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded that climate change is a reality. Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.

INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

INTRODUCTION In recent years several cities in the Eastern United States have constructed subway systems in deeply weathered igneous and metamorphic rocks. Portions of these transit tunnels and shafts have penetrated zones of saprolite. The purpose of this paper is to define saprolite and discuss saprolite behavior in terms of construction and design of tunnels and shafts. Saprolites are products of in situ weathering of rock, with properties intermediate between those of soil and rock. A well-developed weathering profile can be divided into zones of residual soil, saprolite, transition zone materials, weathered rock, and fresh rock. Saprolites are distinguished by a high degree of weathering and by retention of parent rock textures and discontinuities. These structures persist as relict features because of iso-volumetric weathering (Cleaves, 1974) and formation of intergranular bonds that give cohesion to the saprolitic material. As saprolite continues to weather, the bonds are broken, causing the saprolite to decompose and disintegrate into a true residual soil mass without relict structure. Saprolites may form from igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks, but are most easily recognized when derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks because of their inherent structures. The physical characteristics and properties of residual material vary as a function of mineralogic composition, structure, and discontinuities of its parent rock.

Combat Infantrymen’s Badge and Bronze Star Medal. Following his discharge from the Army, he re-entered SDSM&T in 1946 and earned a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1948. He then received an M.S. from Montana Tech (MT), worked several years in industry and then as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington (Seattle). He joined his Montana Tech colleague, Douglas W. Fuerstenau, at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), receiving his doctorate in 1957. While at MIT, he married Clare M. Advances in tunneling technology, such as Earth Pressure Balance and Slurry Shield methods, have allowed the tunneling industry to construct tunnels in increasingly difficult ground conditions. In recent years, a number of civil projects including large diameter train tunnels, subway tunnels, water tunnels, sewer tunnels, and combined sewer tunnels have been successfully completed deep beneath the water table in soft ground conditions utilizing modern day Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). With the increase in difficult ground conditions and higher water pressure comes the inherent need to utilize compressed air to gain access to the TBM?s cutterhead and cutting tools. This paper focuses on one such instance in Los Angeles, CA in which Traylor Brothers Inc. performed a cutterhead intervention by compressing the heading of an 11-foot diameter tunnel to approximately 3 bar gauge pressure. This paper focuses on the environmental controls used to manage ventilation, oxygen levels, temperature, and pressure, as well as discusses the problems associated with toxic gases and the increased risk of fire. The paper will also cover the physical science of the environment and the increased risks of performing basic job functions while in a compressed air heading.

The Los Angeles Metro Eastside Extension light rail project included a 1.5 mile underground segment, which consisted of twin 18'?10" ID tunnels, bored with two EPB-TBMs. One of the major project challenges after the completion of the bored tunnels was the excavation of six cross passages within alluvial geology below the water table and with low ground cover. Sequential excavation methods were employed and this paper details the design, ground treatment, support measures, and construction methods used to mine these cross passages beneath the congested urban streets of the City of Los Angeles.
