Applications of machine learning and robotics in the tunneling industry are still nascent. Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the disasters occurring in underground coal mines. As a typical case, the spontaneous combustion of broken coal left in the longwall gobs often happen which could greatly interrupt the normal mining production. Such concealed thermal event is featured as rapid development and difficulty in locating “hot” spots. If such spontaneous combustion fails to be timely prevented and controlled, a large amount of toxic gases (mainly CO) and smoke could flow and diffuse in the underground working sections, which could present safety hazards for coal miners. In this paper, based on an coal spontaneous combustion event happened in a Chinese gassy mine, the fire ratios derived from the gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system are used in determining the fire status. A comprehensive and collaborative fire extinguishing effort including inert gas injection, underground pressure balance, and sealing enhancement are made to control the fire progress. Simultaneously, the effects of such works to control the spontaneous combustion event have also been quantified using the fire ratios to justify again. Finally, the danger of coal spontaneous combustion in gob is eliminated, and the longwall panel is successfully re-opened for normal production.

Beneath some of New York?s most iconic buildings ? The Met Life Building, the Helmsley Building, the Waldorf Astoria ? crews are busily at work on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s long-awaited East Side Access (ESA) project. In fact, it is 14 floors beneath the famed Grand Central Station where one of the centerpieces of the project, the new Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station terminal, is being blasted and carved into shape. When completed in 2016, the $7.3-billion ESA project will increase LIRR?s capacity into Manhattan and significantly relieve congestion at Penn Station. Currently, 37 LIRR trains per rush hour roll into the crowded Penn Station where many riders must then transfer to subway trains to complete their commute. When completed, the ESA tunnels will bring an estimated 160,000 riders directly to Grand Central Station, saving those riders 30 to 40 minutes. Studies have found that more people work within walking distance of Grand Central than Penn Station. ?The benefits of the project are tremendous,? MTA Capital Construction President Michael Horodniceanu told more than 340 industry professionals attending the UCA of SME?s George A. Fox Conference in New York on Jan. 26. ?The ESA is the first expansion of the LIRR in 100 years. It will increase the East River tunnel capacity by 50 percent and will help support job growth around Grand Central.?

The past five years have seen communications techniques and hardware developed by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors increasingly brought into use in U.S. mines. The Bureau of Mines philosophy has been to help develop and introduce new hardware that goes as far as possible toward meeting the mining industry's needs. The Bureau of Nines programs are also designed to provide continuous fallout of new communications capabilities which are introduced to the mine operators as they occur. As more progress is made in meeting mine comnications needs, it is hoped that the mining industry will readily adopt the equipment and techniques that it finds most useful in meeting its individual needs. This paper reports on recent advances achieved in the development of improved nine communications systems.

The extraction and processing of mineral resources may be accompanied by environmental impacts. In spite of technological advancements, the enormous increase in production volumes within the last decades has induced sizeable environmental impacts along the life-cycle of products. Beside environmental impacts, social issues associated with mining need to be considered to ensure the social acceptability of mining activities. The project EO-MINERS aims at deploying Earth Observation (EO) tools to inform best practices in mining and to thus assist the global mineral resources industries in their transition to sustainable development. In order to facilitate the handling of complex sets of information requirements from a wide variety of stakeholders, a set of indicators was developed that will inform the process of EO tool and services development. The project strives to enable stakeholders outside the industry to meaningfully participate in decision-finding processes on mining-related issues by developing and providing EO products and services that fit the information requirements. The project has identified a wide range of such information requirements by stakeholders that could be potentially provided by EO tools. The applicability of the EO tools on the local level is tested on three mining sites.

A critical component of implementing autonomous systems is the ability to use information from a robust sensory and information system to make sound, predictable, and repeatable decisions to assure safety. This means that any such system would need to evaluate what objects (people, equipment, boulders, etc.) of interest exist in that environment (with relevant data about identity, trajectory, characteristics, etc.), project a future continuum of those objects (including considerations for variabilities), and make control intervention choices to minimize risk due to exposures in the present operational area. The components of an overall system would include: a) sensor and data fusion, b) probability projection of future states, c) generation and evaluation of alternate futures, and d) implementation of best course of action to reduce risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is studying this framework for applications for autonomous mining equipment. This paper focuses on using information from the sensor fusion engine to generate a continuous projection of future and alternate states (b and c above) incorporating the factors of confidence, accuracy, tolerance, and other variabilities. We refer to this as Machine Situational Awareness (MSA).

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

We are no longer short of viable Rare Earth deposits. As little as 2 years ago China mined and produced 97% ofthe world?s rare earths. Only a few deposits were in an advanced stage of exploration and development. Now Technical Metals Research (TMR) Gareth Hatch *5 reports that 347 deposits are being developed by 265 companies down from 440 on July 6th. Their Index of Advanced projects lists 45 projects in 14 countries. They will sustain the world for centuries to come and many good deposits are yet to be found. The problem is mining 14 elements in balance. Each of the deposits listing production in the chart has a unique set of minerals which they think will give them a cost advantage. Which of these will make it to production is a question. Most of the Advanced won?t be mined soon, but which ones? China is still in the driver?s seat in Light Rare Earth production (LREO) with one deposit with 35 million ton Baiyunebo deposit in Inner Mongolia which is part of a working iron ore deposit. The number of HREE deposits have been reduced and they attempting to eliminate unpermitted mines. This report will tell you what a Rare Earth is, how rare they are, why they are important, and where they are being developed which includes Australia, the United States, Africa, Greenland, Brazil and Canada.

The world's largest grinding mill operates at the Cadia Hill Mine in Australia. Svedala Industries supplied the 12.2-m- (40-ft-) diam, 20-MW Cadia gearless, semiautogenous grinding mill (SAG). This was a leap of more than 40% above the largest operating SAG mill. This article reviews the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation and operation of this mill. Description of the Cadia project The Cadia Hill Mine is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Orange, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The mining lease covers about 3,100 hm2 (7,660 acres) of the Cadia Valley. The Cadia deposit is a large, homogeneous, low-grade, porphyry-type, gold-copper resource. Current reserves stand at 202 Mt (222 million st), grading 0.73 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.17% copper. They contain 146.2 t (4.7 million oz) of gold and 347 Kt (382,500 st) of copper. The operation consists of openpit mining and ore processing to produce gold bullion and a gold/copper concentrate. The operation processes 17 Mt/a (19 millon stpy) of ore to produce 91 kt/a (100,300 stpy) of concentrate and 9.1 t/a (293,000 oz/year) of gold. The plant operates two 12-hour shifts a day and had a targeted availability of 94%. The plant facilities include a copper concentrator, o water supply system, an openpit mine, tailings pipeline and dam, and a concentrate pipeline and dewatering facility located in Blayney, about 35 km (22 miles) from the concentrator. Significant features of the process plant include o primary crusher and stockpile, a reclaim conveyor system feeding, the Cadia SAG mill (Figs. 1 and 2) and two 6.7-m- (22-ft-) diam ball mills (Fig. 3). A portion of the gold is extracted in a gravity circuit. The balance is extracted with the copper in the flotation section of the plant. Concentrate is thickened and piped about 35 km (22 miles) to the filter plant and rail loadout facility located in Blayney. Tailings are pumped to a tailings dam and process water is reclaimed from the tailings dam. The water system is designed to control and capture available runoff from local creeks, and to store these waters in dams and weirs. In addition, a major portion of the water for the process plant is treated effluent from the city of Orange and a smaller portion from Blayney Mill selection. The low-grade ore posed a dilemma for Cadia. To achieve a satisfactory economic operation, large-scale processing was required. The selection of the mills, equal to the largest designed and operated at the time, gave a plant configuration consisting of two 11.1- x 5.8-m (36- x 19-ft) SAG mills and three 6.1- x 9.1-m (20 x 30-ft) ball mills. This configuration did not provide the most satisfactory economic model for the project. A review of the single line configuration indicated that a significant reduction in the overall capital cost of the plant could be achieved by increasing the size of the mills and reducing the quantity. In the development of the ultimate pit limits for a narrow ore body, pa¬rameters necessary in the design of a functional, or working, pit become highly sensitive factors in the determination of ore reserve levels and their associated waste to ore stripping ratios. Through the use of geologic cross sections, ore reserves can be roughly calculated by utilizing a straight line approximation for pit wall slopes. The optimum position of the pit floor can be substantially altered from such a preliminary design though with the introduction of functional mining parameters, such as a ramping network, and working bench heights, berm widths, and bench to bench wall angles. Originally a computer program was developed to quickly evaluate changes in cross-section pit design with minimal alteration of input data. After developing a satisfactory technique of cross-section evaluation which incorporates working mine parameters, an optimization algorithm, or procedure, was developed and included in the program to eliminate much of the tedious manual decision-making required in determining the optimum location of the pit floor on each cross section. Optimization in this case implies the maximum profit pit. When pit and processing costs are defined or hypothesized, this computer program can be used to design the maximum profit pit, constrained by the recognized functional mining parameters. A second way of stating the optimization is that the program can be used to develop a pit design which minimizes waste stripping at any desired ore reserve level. The basic method of cross-section evaluation parallels present manual methods. Program input is a combination of data obtained directly from cross sections developed for, geological interpretation and pit design parameters selected by the mine planner. As a result it is easy for the mine planner to comprehend what the program is accomplishing, and thus participate in the development of the computer assisted design.

The QMM mineral sands of South East Madagascar contain approximately 1,900 million tonnes of mineable sand with a total heavy mineral (THM) content of roughly 4.5wt%. The QMM deposits are the world’s largest known reserves of 60% TiO2 ilmenite and also contain a small volume of zircon. The deposits are semi-continuous and homogenous and the mineralized sands are free flowing with minimal overburden, induration & slimes. These characteristics are favourable to dredge mining and allow the application of conventional wet gravity, electrostatic & magnetic separation to final products. A mature THM mineral suite of high valuable heavy minerals (VHM) content has enabled the development of a relatively simple separation process.

Macintosh use in mine-planning applications lags DOS machines since many users have made significant investments in hardware and training for other environments. Macintosh use is becoming more pronounced in many other industries, and com soft-ware is of at least the quality of that available for DOS machines and many workstations. This paper describes attributes of the Macintosh computer family as related to many mine-planning problems and solutions including software, memory considerations, workstations, DOS compatibility, and networking.

The objective of the US Geological Survey’s mineral deposit database project (USMIN) is to develop a comprehensive twentyfirst century geospatial database that is the authoritative source of the most important mines, mineral deposits, and mineral districts of the US. Since May 2017, the project has focused on critical minerals. Data for critical minerals that are produced as products are relatively robust, whereas data for critical minerals that may be recovered as byproducts are commonly of much poorer quality. Similarly, more is known about critical minerals that occur in conventional deposits than where those critical minerals occur in unconventional deposits. For example, rare earth elements occur principally in deposits hosted by alkaline igneous rocks, but there is potential for their production from phosphate rock mining, which is less documented. Lithium (Li) has been recovered from pegmatites and brines, but other Li-bearing deposit types have been delineated that may go into production. Cobalt may be produced as a byproduct or coproduct from a wide range ofmineral deposit types, whereas rheniumis a byproduct of copper ore. Significant opportunities for research exist that could help identify new sources of critical minerals, and may also help increase production and recovery from existing sources.

In 1976, a decision was made by Anamax Mining Company to install an unusual conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 mi) from the new Eisenhower Mine to the Twin Buttes concentrator. The system, supplied by Cable Belt Limited of the United Kingdom, represents a radical departure from conventional belt conveyors. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes driven by a single 2 240 kw (3 000 HP) drive while the belt acts only as the ore carrying medium. Full production was begun in January, 1979. Start-up problems hampered production for several months but were resolved by a joint Anamax-Cable Belt effort. The system has been operating at design capacity for 4-1/2 years, and has proven itself as a reliable, low cost ore transportation system.

One of the problems in flotation is mechanical entrainment and the other is the presence of complex gangues (especially clay minerals). In the present study, it was aimed to determine the effects of clay types (kaolinite, illite, and montmorillonite) on mechanical entrainment parameters (total flotation recovery, real recovery, mechanical entrainment recovery, and water recovery). Effects of clay types and clay amount on chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by flotation experiments. Interaction mechanisms between the clay minerals and ore were characterized using SEM–EDS analyses. Experiments were carried out with and without a collector using the mixture of clay minerals and ore under certain experimental conditions. While the clay mineral most affecting the chalcopyrite grade was montmorillonite, the highest mechanical entrainment recovery and the lowest real recovery values were obtained in the presence of illite. While illite is stated as the least problematic clay mineral in the literature, it was determined that illite among three clay minerals used in this study caused significant mechanical entrainment. In contrast, it was determined that increasing the amount of kaolinite did not have a significant effect on mechanical entrainment. This study’s findings will guide in determining of clay minerals’ effect on gangue entrainment in flotation.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."
